The Virtue of

The “Glass Supper” is presented by Intelligent Glass Solutions

Now the vast majority of communication in 2015 is conveyed through virtual or digital channels, it becomes easy to neglect our face-to-face relationships. Keeping it real in the virtual-driven world in which we live is a vital component of building loyal and long lasting business relationships. The development of deep and lasting relationships involves understanding the importance of our non verbal communication signals as much as, if not more than, our digital or electronic competence or dare I say, even more than our deftly persuasive telephone communication skills. We can develop all the advanced super technology we want but nothing beats being there physically, standing in front of another human being and having a conversation, a good old fashioned chin wag face to face, nothing can beat that proper, real connection.

When you’re in the company of really great people, it inspires you and lifts your soul, it makes you raise your game and believe that you can become really great too, maybe some of the stardust will fall on you and “Pow”, the real you will all of a sudden come forth. Over three hundred people will experience that feeling of uplifting inspiration on Thursday 3rd December when they gather together under one roof and connect with each other for the day (and deep into the night) at the glittering star-studded Glass Supper in London. The Opening Plenipotentiary Speaker for the event this year is the new President of the RIBA, the delightfully charismatic Jane Duncan who will reveal the plans for her term in office and her desire to reach out to young architectural students. All of the talented individuals who will be addressing the corporate leaders in the audience at the Glass Supper will reflect on various aspects of delight, the third Vitruvian virtue in their presentations, what it means to them, how they incorporate delight into their day to day work. Is delight an important virtue in buildings today when we are faced with incredibly urgent energy efficiency issues and pressing climate change challenges? Should delight in architecture be sacrificed for more practical building energy management and/or safety and security solutions in order to satisfy the needs of today? The answers to these and all the most critical industry issues will be discussed in London this December. Here, at this event, you will hear insightful discussion on distinctive topics with key personnel on the issues that really matter, and find out what these issues mean to us in the course of our daily lives.

The key factor connecting innovation, competitiveness and growth in the 21st century is people, talented people. It’s not finance, fear, or secrecy as so many people and corporations would have us believe. The Glass Supper facilitates perfect communication engaging all of our senses, and manifest in total connection of the heart, soul, mind, body, purpose and strength.

Get connected and make friends in high places on Thursday 3rd December at the Glass Supper 2015 in the Skygarden at 20 Fenchurch Street, London......Welcome!

ENGINEERINGFAÇADE FAÇADE2015

INTERNATIONAL AWARDS for FAÇADE ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE

The campaign to elicit entries for the second competition of the Society of Façade Engineering has come to an end with the deadline of 2nd December. And the judges are declaring a significant step forward over the inaugural 2013 event, in respect of quantity of entries and with their quality as exciting as those previously submitted.

FAÇADE2015 is based upon a simple goal: to recognise, reward and promote excellence in the design and engineering of fine architectural façades, an increasingly crucial element in the behaviour and appearance of buildings, both new build and refurbishment.

This year the competition is supported by Reynaers Aluminium and the winners of three categories - Façade of the Year 2015-New Build; Façade of the Year 2015–Refurbishment; and an additional category Outstanding Façade Innovation 2015 – will be presented at The Glass Supper, a fitting occasion for something that also carries with it such lofty ideals.

By then the judging panel, a veritable Who’s Who of façades experts, will have sifted through the entries and have produced winners that by definition will advance the cause of façades and have the audience at least nodding their heads in approval.

The SFE has announced a panel of judges designed to represent the key disciplines involved in the design and implementation of building façades as they play an ever-increasing role in the aesthetics and performance of buildings. Seven of the World’s leading experts involved with the design and implementation of building façades will therefore judge the entries in this years competition. The FAÇADE2015 panel includes:

Architect Mark Taylor BA DipArch DipAP MSc RIBA from Allies & Morrison and member of the Society of Façade Engineering;

Graham Hackley MSc MCIOB from specialist contractor Century Façades and Fellow of the Society of Façade Engineering;

Saverio Pasetto, MSc in Façade Engineering and Technical Director of principal contractor Skanska UK, MSFE;

David Metcalfe, a Senior Engineer and Chairman of the Centre for Window & Cladding Technology (CWCT), University of Bath and MSFE; Steve Lo MSc, PhD, University of Bath, lecturer and author and FSFE;

Patrick Ryan,  Ph.D, CEng, MIStructE, Facade Consultant and Director of Patrick Ryan Associates and FSFE;

and Chairman of the Judges Chris Macey, CEO of Wintech Group and one of the founding members and past chairman and Fellow of the Society of Façade Engineering.

When considering entries judges must consider if each demonstrates excellence in technical design and/or research that has made a significant contribution to the discipline of façade engineering, in the development of technologies, product designs, systems or buildings. That contribution may be demonstrated in the form of technical advances, innovations or advanced engineering systems that result in practical design solutions for the completion of a project. Entries may relate to projects that are agreed, under construction or completed.

“In financial terms the cost of the façade of a new building will roughly equate to the cost of its structure,” said Graham Hackley, organiser of the competition for the Society. “However, the contribution of a well-considered façade will represent a far greater proportion of the building’s value over its lifetime, in terms of its overall performance but also, in respect of the perception of that building by its users and its impact on the local environment and society. These elements are becoming more widely understood but we believe there remains work to do, especially in the renovation of existing buildings.

“Some of the world’s most treasured structures are appreciated because of the key element of their façades. When the winners of FAÇADE2015 are announced we hope to have recognised new additions to that list.”

INTERNATIONAL AWARDS for FAÇADE ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE

The Society of Façade Engineering was formed in 2004 as a joint initiative of CIBSE, IStructE and the RIBA. It is governed by a Council drawn from among its members and administered by CIBSE.

The Society provides a forum in which architects, façade engineers, building services engineers, structural engineers and contractors can work together to advance knowledge and practice in façade engineering, promote good practice and ensure that today’s increasingly complex building façades meet the many and varying performance criteria. In particular, it addresses the complex issues in building physics of thermal insulation, ventilation, lighting, solar control, and acoustics.

Learn more about how we’re moving solar energy ahead. Download our Solar Solutions brochure at dowcorning.com/solarinnovation

Capturing all the potential of solar

takes a committed supplier for your material needs.At Dow Corning, we believe that silicone and silicon-based innovations will help power the solar energy revolution.

And that’s why we’re continually investing in people, processes and research to help solar energy become economically competitive with traditional energy sources.

As a leading silicon-based materials provider, we’re applying our more than 65 years of experience to bring innovation and efficiencies to the silicone materials that are ideal for solar applications. From breakthrough silicon feedstocks to high-performance encapsulants, our solutions cover the entire solar value chain. And even go a bit beyond.

For example, at our global network of Solar Solution Application Centers, we’re collaborating with customers to solve material development puzzles, trial new solutions at industrial scale, and test them to be sure they meet industry standards. And through our Hemlock Semiconductor Group joint venture, we’re combining our silicon expertise with their industry-leading polycrystalline silicon manufacturing experience to help meet the needs of the growing solar panel market.

In these and many more ways, Dow Corning is working every day to help the solar industry achieve global grid parity—so that all of us can benefit from a more sustainable future.
