Most HSE professionals do not know whataccidents and ill-health really cost theircompanies in time and money. Few bother toexamine costs if and when they investigateaccidents and incidents. It is often assumed thatmost accident and incident costs arerecoverable through insurance. This is adangerous misconception.

Uninsured costs can include:

- Lost time- Sick pay- Damage or loss of product and raw materials- Repairs to plant and equipment- Extra wages, overtime working and temporary staff- Production delays- Investigation time- Fines/Penalties- Loss of contracts- Legal costs.

Unsafe Acts are actions by people that directly cause or contribute to an accidentat work. Examples are:

- Wrong attitude, poor understanding/perception- Drug or alcohol use- Not following procedures – taking shortcuts- Unauthorized use of equipment or tools- Using damaged or wrong equipment/tools- Not using personal protective equipment

Studies & Findings world-wide:An unsafe act occurs in approximately 85%- 95%

of all analyzed accidents with injuries
