Glossary Circuit breaker (CB) - Disconnecting & isolating - Contactor - Earthing switch

• Breaking and making fault currents.• It opens automatically on detection of a fault.• Manual or electrical operation.• Fixed or withdrawable in AIS solution; fixed in GIS.• A circuit breaker is used for protection of large size distribution transformer or as general protection of each feeder.

Circuit Breaker (CB)

• Disconnection of the main circuit is achieved either by the use of a disconnecting switch e.g. GIS Switchgear or VISAX Compact, or by physically racking out the circuit breaker truck e.g. PIX. In both cases the disconnection also provides circuit isolation as defined by the IEC standard.• Independent of the method of disconnection, isolation is always achieved ‘off load’ and is interlocked with the circuit breaker.

Disconnecting & isolating

• Voltage Transformers are included on either circuits (incomers or feeders) or busbars to provide a voltage source relating to the supply. This voltage is typically used for metering and protection (i.e. Voltmeters, kW Meters and under voltage protection). Depending on the application the class is chosen i.e. Class 1 giving 1% accuracy. The typical ratings are 10-30 VA.• Control Voltage Transformers are used in fused contactors to provide a control supply to the contactor and control circuit, thus making the complete circuit independent of external supplies. These transformers are usually rated for 250VA.

Voltage Transformer (VT)

Current Transformers are used within the switchgear and are selected to provide either protection or metering/indication functions:• Protection – the most common functions are over-current and earth fault, usually defined with accuracy classes of 5P10, 5P20, 10P10 or 10P20.e.g. 5P10 gives 5% accuracy at 10 times nominal current.• Metering/Indication – functions include local ammeters/ kW meters, etc, and tariff metering with accuracies up to 0.5% typically.e.g. Class 0.2 equals 0.2% accuracy.

Current Transformer (CT)

An IS limiter is a ‘one shot’ fault current limiting device, which can be installed into medium voltage switchgear (another equipment). The purpose of these devices is to very quickly detect when a current is flowing which could be greater than the capabilities of the connectedequipment, and then interrupt the current, thereby ensuring the connected equipment is not subject to peak and short time currents which are greater then they can withstand.

The IS limiter is made up of a sensing circuit, a main current carry conductor, a parallel fuse and a small pyrotechnic device which when triggered open-circuit’s the main current carrying conductor.The current then flows through the fuse which operates to open circuit the network.

A typical example of an application of an IS limiter would be on an existing network which is extended to introduce addition supply sources, such as generation. The new equipment has a higher fault rating than the existing equipment and the potential fault level of the new network is also higher than the existing system. The IS limiter is used to connect the two networks together. Under normal conditions power can flow between the two networks. Under a fault condition on the existing network the Is limiter would operate before the fault current on the existing network exceeds the networks capabilities.

Internal arc protection device

Many industrial customers have insurance against lost of production due to failure of equipment. To minimize potential failure the insurance companies require that the equipment is properly maintained and monitored to predict any possible failure. Thermo graphic imagining is one way to predict if the equipment is operating correctly. Of course customers also use IR monitoring as part of their regular maintenance, as any failure is very disruptive.

For many years’ customers MV and LV switchgear has had facilities to gain access to the various connections so that thermal imaging cameras can be 'pointed' at them and the temperature measured.In the past this has been achieved by removable covers and mesh screens, or for MV, IR 'windows' were fitted using special crystal glass to allow the transmission of IR. These windows were located in the switchgear panels at appropriate points to view the various connections.

Recently we have introduced electronic IR monitoring devices into our switchgear (EXERTHERM). This has a number of advantages over the traditional approach - they can be mounted inside the switchgear panel and therefore can be used to access connections not normally visible. They do not require the operator to approach the equipment (very important for safety), the integrity of the switchgear cubicle is maintained therefore IAC is not compromised. And importantly for maintenance, the devices can offer continuous monitoring.

Thermal diagnosis: monitoring – alarm – fault location.It is based on the principle of measuring circuit temperaturesat Medium-Voltage (MV) potential, without insulation-related risk(due to the use of optical fibres).By measuring the temperature of live circuits, it ensures:• continuous monitoring of the temperature rise in power circuitsat busbar and cable connections,• tripping of a pre-alarm, followed by an alarm, by activatingdry contact outputs (remote operation via the monitoring system),• location of the zone and circuit concerned.

Today thermal monitoring is requested more and more. In Canada we are advised that IR monitoring is becoming a 'standard'. Many large industry and O&G companies now request this either on specific projects or as part of their Switchgear standard specifications.

Modern MV Switchgear is of course fully Internal Arc Classified to prevent an Arc in one compartment from travelling to adjacent compartments - propagating the fault . Of course an internal arc failure is still very disruptive and will cause severe damage within the compartmentwhere it occurs. It will also have substantial pollution effects on adjacent equipment. Although the arc will always be contained and will not spread outside the faulty compartment, the arc products must be dissipated in a safe manner. Even IAC rated switchgear will migrate large quantities ofcombustion products into most adjacent switchgear compartments and possibly to other equipment within the same Switchroom.

By using the ILIS/VAMP light detection system, arc faults can be detected and disconnected in less than 100ms (severe faults within 25ms). This considerably reduces the volume and pressure of the arc combustion products and minimizes the impact of an arc fault.

Effects of altitude on Air Insulated Switchgear

Protection degree is defined according to IEC 62 271-1.

under certain conditions a de-rating factor shall be applied to e.g. rated current. refer to technical documentation and support.

According to IEC standards, current carrying capacities of indoor switchgear refer to ambient temperatures of 40°C maximum, with an average of 35°C for period of 24h. In case of more severe conditions a de-rating factor shall be applied to the rated current of the apparatus.

The rated dielectric values are guaranteed at sea level and under normal atmospheric conditions (IEC 60071-2, pressure 1013 h Pa, temperature 20 °C, relative humidity 11 g/m3). Despite the fact that the degree of air insulation decreases progressively as the altitude increases, the ratedvalues are guaranteed up to 1000 metres above sea level.Above 1000 m, a correction factor must be taken into account to calculate the level of insulation which could be guaranteed.For information refer to the graph below for correction factor vs. altitude.

This applies as well to the air insulated fuse compartment in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS).
