The Bishop of Sherwood,
the Rt Revd Tony Porter,
has announced that he will
retire on 22nd March 2020, after
42 years in ordained ministry.
Bishop Tony, who will be 68
upon his retirement, said: “It has
been a great privilege to serve in
the diocese and to be part of its
vision for Growing Disciples in
every parish”.
Sharing the good news of Jesus
has been at the heart of Bishop
Tony’s ministry and, along with
his wife Lucille, he has led 39
Seed Scattering outreach
weekends across the diocese. He
is currently heading up the
planning for the oneLIFE mission
that is coming to Southwell &
Nottingham on September 12,
2019.
Working with the poor and the
marginalised has also been a
major part of his life and he is a
long-time friend and supporter of
Christians Against Poverty, as
well as supporting various groups
and charities across the diocese.
The Bishop of Southwell &
Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul
Williams said: “Bishop Tony has
been a tremendously encouraging
servant of God in this diocese,
with an untiring love for sharing
the good news of Jesus, especially
with those beyond the fringes of
the church, or struggling on the
margins of society. He is a big-
hearted evangelist with a wide
vision for the impact the church
can have in serving the poor, yet
equally himself when supporting
leaders in sport, business and
civic life.”
Bishop Tony was consecrated as
the Bishop of Sherwood by the
Archbishop of York, the Most
Revd John Sentamu, at York
Minster on Tuesday, 21st March
2006.
He served his first curacy in
Edgware, North London, then
became a curate at St Mary’s
Haughton Green in Manchester
Diocese before moving to be
Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church,
Bacup. He then became Rector of
Holy Trinity Rusholme, also in
Manchester and on the edge of
Moss Side for 15 years. During
his time at Moss Side he was the
chaplain for Manchester City
Football Club and also to Greater
Manchester Police.
Another of Bishop Tony’s loves is
sport – he played hockey for
England Schoolboys – and in
2015 he was commissioned as the
Archbishops’ Sport Ambassador,
working to strengthen links
between the Church and sport at
all levels.
A Service of Farewell will be held
at Southwell Minster on Sunday
22nd March 2020 at 3.30 pm.

The Collation and Installation of Canon Phil Williams as the
new Archdeacon of Nottingham took place in Southwell
Minster last month. On a beautiful summer’s evening a large
congregation of family, friends, former parishioners and supporters
gathered for the service.
“It was such a joyful occasion to be surrounded by family and friends
in a cathedral that’s become so special to me,” said Phil.
After Bishop Paul had completed the Collation and Installation, Phil
delivered his first sermon as Archdeacon.

Responding to the needs and challenges of
caring for our planet
As we approach the season
of Creationtide, it is
timely to reflect on how
we, as individual Christians and
church communities, are
responding to the needs and
challenges of caring for our
planet.
The Anglican Communion has
identified Five Marks of Mission.
All five have implications for our
relationship with the Creation:
 To proclaim the Good News
of the Kingdom – including the
vision that all created things hold
together in Christ
 To teach, baptise and nurture
new believers – reminding us all
that being Christ’s disciples
means being content with enough
To respond to human need by
loving service – including
serving our global neighbours
suffering because of
environmental degradation or
climate change
 To transform unjust structures
of society, to challenge violence
of every kind and pursue peace
and reconciliation – including
challenging structures that deny
access to natural resources for
meeting the human needs both
now and in the future
 To strive to safeguard the
integrity of creation, and sustain
and renew the life of the earth –
to live in harmony with Creation,
caring for the natural world and
treading lightly on the earth:
"Reducing the causes of climate
change is essential to the life of
faith. It is a way to love our
neighbour and to steward the gift
of creation"- Justin Welby,
Archbishop of Canterbury.

Eco Church, Eco Diocese?
About half of English dioceses
are registered as Eco Diocese
with A Rocha, and a handful have
achieved bronze status. In our
diocese we need more churches
to register, as many as possible,
and a minimum of 13 to achieve
bronze status, before we can
become an eco-diocese. If you
want a conversation about how to
move forward please contact
David McCoulough, Director of
Partnerships & Mission:
org
Churches complete the unique
online Eco Survey about how
they are caring for God’s earth in
different areas of their life and
work. The answers a church
provides will collect points
towards an Eco Church Award –
the more your church does, the
more points you get!
If your score doesn’t gain you an
Eco Church Award straight away
don’t worry – the idea is to
complete further actions in order
to gain the points necessary for
an Award. For example, you can
switch to a green energy
company or start using Fairtrade
tea and coffee supplies to gain
Eco Church Award points. The
survey takes you through five key
areas of church life:
 Worship and teaching
 Management of church
buildings
 Management of church land
 Community and global
engagement
 Lifestyle
It takes into account whether or
not your church has buildings or
land, and you can save your
survey responses at any point and
return to update them as your
church completes additional
actions.

Fr Fuad writes on the ministry ofreconciliation
Reconciliation is in the
heart of the Christian
Gospel, as well as its
ministry and theology. We are all
called to be in a religious faction,
be in a non-governmental
organisation, political society or
social group. We have one aim to
accept and respect everybody
whoever they are and their
nationality, faith, way of worship,
and all related human rights.
We belong to one of the three
monotheistic religions in the Holy
Land. We are called to come
together and reconcile on faith
based claims, reconciling first
within, and then with the other.
We never misuse Holy Books
rather we analyse them through
study. Obtaining a deep
understanding that all
monotheistic texts call for
fairness, human dignity, and
peace. Christians, Muslims and
Jews believe in one God so we
should all come together in the
church, mosque and synagogue to
form one body searching for tools
and instruments aimed at
achieving justice, reconciliation
and peace.
It is the right time for churches to
unite with mosques and
synagogues where the small
identities melt within the
collective vision that sees
everybody and represents
everybody on equal standards, for
the sake of reconciliation and
peace.
We, as a Church in a wounded
land, have a role to play, a role of
love and acceptance. This does
not mean relinquishing our own
rights and accepting defeat, but
speaking the truth with great
courage and working for the truth
in order to reconcile with it.
It is our task through this sacred
ministry of reconciliation, to
nurture religious, social, and
political leaders to achieve peace,
justice and reconciliation within
their own communities. This
goal, for everyone to follow,
should create opportunities for
participation creating a vision for
the whole community, a vision of
peace and reconciliation.
For God was in Christ,
reconciling the world to himself,
no longer counting people’s sins
against them. And he gave us this
wonderful message of
reconciliation.
Reverend Fr Canon Fuad SDagher is the Rector of St. Paul`sEpiscopal Church, Shefa-Amr,Galilee and Canon forReconciliation at St. George`sCathedral in Jerusalem.
He is the Partnership Officer forthe Diocese of Jerusalem with the
Diocese of Southwell &Nottingham.
Changes in the Middle East
Province ?
The Standing Committee of the
Anglican Consultative Council
(ACC) met at the end of April
and received a request from the
province that the Diocese of
Egypt, North Africa and the Horn
of Africa become a separate,
independent province. The
Diocese of Jerusalem is also
seeking special status due to ’its
historical position as the Mother
Church of our Christian Faith’.
The situation for the Diocese of
Cyprus and the Gulf and Iran is
unclear.
The ACC has set up an
exploration committee to look
into the circumstances of this
request as part of the Council’s
guidelines for recognizing new
provinces and asked for a report
as soon as possible. The
Committee has to consider the
situation of those dioceses that
remain should a new province be
formed.

Do call in and see us in this beautiful house and gardens in the middle of Southwell.
We are open most weekday mornings and often other times as well- do contact us first just to check.
There is a chapel set aside for prayer, and we also house a good spirituality library which anyone is
welcome to use.
Parishes and other groups are welcome to come to us for quiet days and other meetings and times away.
Do let us know if we can help you with your special days.
We also run regular quiet days. Here are details of the next three. If you intend to book please do so very
soon; recently we cancelled a Quiet Day for lack of interest only for several people contacting us a day or
two before it was due to take place wanting to attend.

‘I nothing in the world did know
But ‘twas divine.’ (Thomas Traherne)
Traherne was a 17th c. poet, priest and spiritual writer who in his writing communicated his love and
worship of the Creator through the beauty of the natural world. On this day we will be looking at his
poetry, as well as some poems of other writers – e.g. Gerard Manley Hopkins and the American poet
Mary Oliver – who had a strong affinity with the natural world and a sense of its numinousness.

The Jesus Prayer
For centuries the Jesus Prayer has been leading Orthodox Christians beyond the language of liturgy and
the representations of iconography into the wordless, imageless stillness of the mystery of God. In more
recent years it has been helping an increasing number of Western Christians to find a deeper relationship
with God through the continual rhythmic repetition of a short prayer which, by general agreement, first
emerged from the desert spirituality of early monasticism. On this quiet day, Jim Wellington explores
what the Jesus prayer is, how we pray it and how it can assist us in our life with God.

SPONSORED RIDE AND STRIDESaturday 14th September 2019
Has your Church signed up yet for this year’s Ride & Stride event. Please do so – it’s not so hard a task
and it will help your Church and many others who require much needed help when repairs are found
necessary.
The Ride + Stride event shares the same weekend with the Heritage Open Days and this year the One
Life Mission weekend when Bishops from up North are coming to our area and the Ride & Stride is an
excellent opportunity to take advantage of the publicity and open your church to show your neighbours
and visitors the beauty of your Church and something of your life and achievements.
We particularly hope that churches which have been in receipt of grants from the Trust will show their
appreciation by taking part this year.
All the details are on the Notts Historic Church Trust web site now - or If you require further

MINISTRY VACANCIES
August 2019 Southwell & Nottingham Diocese is a great place to be in ministry for mission! We specialise in creative and stimulating appointments, have generous churchgoers, some beautiful churches and our cathedral is a gem. It’s a varied and exciting area to live in, with excellent access to other parts of the UK. We take care of our church leaders with good quality housing and supportive deanery colleagues. Fresh stipendiary/non-stipendiary/retiring/part-time clergy and laity are welcome!
NOTTINGHAM ARCHDEACONRY VACANCIES
Porchester – Vicar
St James, Porchester lies on the outskirts of Nottingham and is a warm and welcoming community. We are seeking a prayerful vicar who can help us to grow disciples, especially in areas of the parish and with age profiles (13-45-year olds) that we are not currently reaching. We have a desire to work collaboratively with neighbouring parishes to establish a new worshiping community in expanding housing developments on the northern boundary of the parish. We are also hoping that our new vicar will help our congregation to grow deeper in faith through preaching and teaching, and is able to nurture, motivate and affirm the gifts and contributions of others and encourage us to pray. For informal discussion and further information, please contact Phil Williams, Archdeacon of Nottingham, on 07850 518504 or email [email protected].
Sneinton St Cyprian – House for Duty Priest in Charge
St Cyprian’s is a Traditional Catholic parish in the Church of England and the Bishop of Beverley provides alternative Episcopal sacramental and pastoral care. St Cyprian’s is affiliated to The Society of St Wilfred and St Hilda, and registered with Forward in Faith. We are seeking a priest who can put into practice our mission statement and the Diocesan focus of Growing Disciples Wider, Younger, Deeper. We need a priest who can inspire younger people to be involved in the life of our church, who can support outreach into schools, strengthen our Sunday School and encourage

our uniformed organisations to attend our services. As part of this work good social media skills would be an advantage. We also hope that the new priest will be active in the local community and foster links with other religious organisations in the area. For informal discussion and further information, please contact Phil Williams, Archdeacon of Nottingham, on 07850 518504 or email [email protected].
Whatton with Aslockton, Hawksworth, Scarrington, Orston and Thoroton (The Cranmer Group) - Vicar
The Cranmer Group was established in 1967 and brings together 6 semi-rural villages, proud of our connection with Archbishop Cranmer. We are looking to grow disciples Wider, Younger and Deeper and in addition to a rich tradition and a range of worship styles, we have started an all age Café church and have a vision to start Messy Church. We currently have engagement with two primary schools. We are looking for someone with a manifest commitment to the Gospel, an enabler who will lead confidently and sensitively into new ways of being church, and an effective communicator who can share faith in ways easy to understand. For informal discussion and further information, please contact Phil Williams, Archdeacon of Nottingham, on 07850 518504 or email [email protected].
