Vision for 7,000 new disciples shared with Synod
The Diocesan Synod met in
April with a particular
focus on Growing
Disciples – wider, younger and
deeper.
In his address to the Synod,
Bishop Paul spoke about his deep
thankfulness to God and hope for
the Church as he reflected on the
life of the diocese after nine
months as bishop.
Considering the words of Jesus in
Luke 10, ‘The harvest is
plentiful’, Bishop Paul said:
“Wherever I look in the diocese
we do not lack for precious
opportunities to love and serve
people in Jesus’ name. We also
live among 1.2m people many of
whom are remarkably open to
considering the deeper issues of
life and faith, but who have not
yet encountered the reality of
God’s transforming love through
the message of the gospel.”
He went on to say that as a
Church we can often feel
stretched in terms of resources,
especially people to share in the
work of Christ growing new
disciples and responding to the
ever increasing needs of people
across our communities. Bishop
Paul told Synod that this need not
diminish our vision or sense of
hope reminding the Synod “that
Jesus has a good track record of
taking what is small and weak
and multiplying it many times
over”.
Bishop Paul shared with the
Synod some emerging priorities
for the diocese around ‘Growing
Disciples – wider, younger and
deeper’ with the aspiration to
welcome 7,000 new disciples by
2023.
The Bishop’s Advisor for
Strategic Development, Canon
Richard Kellett, and the
Archdeacon of Nottingham,
Sarah Clark went on to describe
the priorities that the Bishop’s
Staff with Bishop’s Council have
been developing over the past few
months.

Bishop’s Week of Prayer
19 – 26 June 2016
The diocesan vision around
‘Growing Disciples –
wider, younger, deeper’
is something we are continuing to
prayerfully develop over the
coming months. You are invited
to join Bishop Paul during his
week of prayer at one of the
following prayer events across
the diocese for an evening of
prayer, worship and the Word.
Sunday 19 June 2016,
7pm to 8.30pm
Deaneries of West Bingham and
East Bingham
at St Peter’s Church, Ruddington
Monday 20 June 2016,
7.30pm to 9pm
Deaneries of Newstead and
Mansfield
at St Peter’s Church, Ravenshead
Tuesday 21 June 2016,
7.30pm to 9pm
Deaneries of Nottingham North
and Nottingham South
at St Helen’s Church, Stapleford
Wednesday 22 June 2016,
7.30pm to 9pm

Deanery of Bassetlaw and
Bawtry
at St Saviour’s Church, Retford
These gatherings are open to all,
please spread the word in your
parish(es) and come to whichever
is most convenient to you.
Churches are being invited to
apply for grants from the
Bishop’s Welcome Fund which
was set up to support projects in
the diocese working with
refugees and asylum seekers.
There is now enough in the fund
for a first round of applications;
the money was raised during this
year’s Lent and Confirmation
Appeal.
Parishes and churches can apply
for grants of between £250 and
£500 to support projects that
offer a ministry of hospitality
and support to refugees.
The Appeal was inspired by the
plight of people fleeing war and
persecution from around the
world, particularly in the Middle
East and parts of Africa, The
complex legal processes they
face when they arrive in the UK
can leave many destitute in our
neighbourhoods.
Churches, charities and projects
in the diocese have been
offering hospitality and support
for many years, providing legal
help, safe housing, signposting,
language skills, and food
parcels.
The fund is there to support this
existing work and to help
churches looking to start new
projects.

The Reimagining Europe website offers Christian reflection and
debate on Britain’s future relationship with the EU as we get ever
closer to the referendum on Thursday, 23 June.
It does not take an ‘in’ or ‘out’ line but is committed to
communicating Christian reflection and commentary in ways that
enhance public understanding on an issue that many find confusing
and divisive.

Richard said: “The primary aim
to welcome and grow new
disciples will be through the
ongoing ministry of every local
church – the other strands of this
vision are about supporting this
ministry as we look to reach out
in new ways to serve all who live
in the diocese.”
Archdeacon Sarah explained the
priority around developing
Resource Churches that can ‘give
themselves away’, including
planting or grafting New
Worshipping Communities. She
shared the plan for establishing a
new younger Resource Church in
the city to reach out especially to
those under 30 living, working or
studying close to what is known
as the ‘Creative Quarter’ near
Hockley. Sarah also spoke about
the early stages of thinking for a
mid-county younger Resource
Church.
Bishop Paul said: “The wider
diocesan vision and strategy
around Growing Disciples will be
further developed and honed over
the coming months as
conversations continue with
Deanery Leadership Teams and in
parishes.
“Every church will be invited to
prayerfully review its own local
plan for ‘Growing Disciples –
wider, younger and deeper’.
Central to this review will be
giving thanks to God for all that
he is already doing among us as
people of all ages are being
drawn deeper into the life of
faith, which is something we
celebrate at every Confirmation.”

Emerging prioritiesCompelled by the love of Christ
by 2023 we will seek to:
 Welcome 7000 new disciples
into the fellowship of Christ and
his church
 Commission 1000 Younger
Leaders equipped and inspired to
serve the purposes of God in the
Church and Society
 Plant or graft 75 New
Worshipping Communities to
increase our reach in sharing the
story of Jesus with all and
growing new disciples
 Develop 25 Resource Churches
in every part of the county,
growing to give themselves away
 Serve as 1 Church prayerfully
contending for the gospel in
every community and sphere of
public life in our city, county and
region
Aunique memorial to the
sacrifice of members of
Southwell Diocese in
war, from the outbreak of World
War 1 to the present day, has been
installed in Southwell Minster,
and will be dedicated at a special
service on Sunday 10th July.
The Window and Plaque were
commissioned in 2014 by the
then Dean of Southwell and the
Cathedral Chapter, in conjunction
with the Lord Lieutenant of
Nottinghamshire, Sir John Peace
and Vice Lord- Lieutenant,
Colonel Tim Richmond who, on
behalf of the Nottinghamshire
Lieutenancy, undertook the
fundraising needed. This has
come in the main from private
benefactors, with additional
support from regimental
associations and Royal British
Legion branches.

Sally Smith will lead a day
‘Exploring Creative Prayer’ on
Saturday 11th June 2016 from
10am to 4pm.
This is an opportunity to
explore, in silence, different
ways of praying through
creativity. Different ways of
praying will be introduced, and
there will be time for
participants to spend praying on
their own. Come prepared to
have a go. Masterpieces, or even
good works of art are not looked
for, but for engaging with God
through doing.
Sally Smith is commissioning
editor for the Bible Reading
Fellowship publication, Quiet
Spaces. She is experienced in
leading quiet days, and enjoys
creating spaces for prayer. She
is a spiritual director in the
Diocese of Southwell and

Arevamped version of the
prayer diary, designed to
strengthen and extend the
prayer life of the diocese, will be
launched later this year.
It will be more interactive, more
inclusive, and more creative,
supporting discipleship and
encouraging worship with a range
of prayer and devotional resources,
including prayer videos.
The prayers will be more sharply
focused: instead of a general prayer for a parish as featured in the
current diary, parishes will be able to choose their own subjects for
prayer via an e-form that will be sent to them; each parish will be
prayed for once a year.
Church schools will be included in the diary, recognising their
contribution to the life of the diocese, along with the Anglican
Communion, and a special feature on Vocations in August. There will
be more options for prayer as the diary will link to other sites and
resources so that it becomes part of people’s discipleship.
Archdeacon David Picken, who is leading the group working on the
project, said: “I am really pleased to be part of this revision. We have
sought to offer a diary that helps people pray in a variety of ways.
This should help all in our parishes feel part of our diocesan family
and help them celebrate being part of a global Church.
“As we look to the diocesan vision ‘Growing disciples: Wider,
Younger, Deeper’ our prayer is that the new diary will be a source of
strength and inspiration.”
The diary will be launched at the beginning of Advent. It will be
accessible on PC, tablet and phone and will be designed to be used by
churches and individuals. It is hoped that people who use it will
become aware that they are not praying alone and are part of a
network of prayer stretching across the diocese.

The Revd Barbara Holbrook,Link Officer for Natal writes:
Our link with Natal is at an
exciting point, as our two
new diocesan bishops
plan to meet and the two Link
Officers and Strategy Group
(chaired by Bishop Tony) explore
where the future will take us. One
thing that we are sure about is
that the Link will grow and
mature only as individual
friendships are woven into the
whole – it is by travelling
together as companions in faith
that we grow and learn. We are
really pleased to learn that Pearl,
who visited us as Diocesan Youth
Worker from Natal, will be
starting her oordination training
in a few months. We are proud of
her resilience and perseverance in
the faith.
Over the last few months, there
have been visits between
members of our Small Story
Links, both here to Southwell and
Nottingham and in Natal. It’s not
only the visits, but regular phone
calls and conversations as well as
e-mails and Skype that help us
build those friendships. One of
the important stages of our
maturing link has been to reflect
on how Small Story Links change
when the key members of the
linked parishes move on. In both
Dioceses we have seen clergy
leave a link parish, and the
friendship be held by the laity.
We are also reflecting on how the
new parish priest is welcomed
into that friendship and our
shared vision. This is not always
straightforward, as our
friendships are between equal
partners and becoming part of this
is a personal choice not a formal
expectation. We have seen (and
hopefully learnt from) the pitfalls
of unrealistic expectations of each
other.
The groups in both Dioceses now
feel that the time has come to
encourage new Small Story
Links, and we would welcome
conversations with anyone who
would like to explore the
possibility.
Please pray for the existing links
and for new friendships to grow,
and pray especially for our
bishops as they look to meet later
in the year.

Nicholas Mynheer, a fine artist, was selected from twelve possible
contenders. His vivid and moving tribute to selfless sacrifice, both by
those who went to war, and those left to care for families and
maintain life at home, can now be seen in the quire of the Minster.
A hundred years since the start of the war, the design seeks to reflect
the need for forgiveness and reconciliation, giving glimpses of
combatants from both sides seeking common ground between them.
Whilst it does not flinch from the terrible truth of war it equally offers
hope for the future.
Oxford based Nicholas, whose work had been described as ‘rigorous
simplicity in stone, oil or glass’ says: “It acknowledges the darkness
of despair and loss, as well as – for many – the loss of faith but it
hints ultimately that it is through selfless sacrifice and service to
others that the darkness of despair is turned into the Light of Hope.”
ORDINATION PRAYERS 2016
Living Worship . Growing Disciples . Seeking Justice
As we approach the ordination season, it is good to celebrate the gift of ministry and pray for vocations to all ministries. The following prayers are commended for
personal devotions and public worship.
Almighty God, we praise you for those whom you have called to the ministry of the Church from age to age.
May those whom you would use today know your will; give them understanding of the task that awaits them; strengthen them as they prepare to fulfil your calling; and keep them humble and faithful in your service; for the glory of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Father, guide us by your Spirit to discover your call upon our lives.
Grant us humility to listen to your voice, courage to act when you call,
faithfulness to follow where you lead and a selfless abandonment to seek your glory
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Please pray for all the following candidates who are in retreat from the previous Wednesday evening.

PRESS RELEASE
18th May 2016 For immediate release
New church to serve youth and young adults in Nottingham A new church is being established by the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham to reach out to younger people living in the city. The new congregation will have a particular focus on developing relationships with students and young adults close to the ‘creative quarter’ on the east side of the city centre. The diocese is in the process of identifying a building that can host a range of meetings and activities in a non-traditional church venue. The church will be led by Jonny and Amy Hughes, supported by a core team of volunteers from Holy Trinity Brompton in London, home of the Alpha Course, who have experience in helping to develop younger resource churches in larger cities. Jonny, 32, grew up in Manchester and spent some time working in the States before joining the staff at HTB in 2011 as a pastor for students and young adults. He and Amy have four children under five. He will be ordained in Southwell Minster on the 3rd of July having completed training for ministry at St Mellitus College, now one of the largest Church of England training institutions in the country. Among others, Jonny will be joined by Will and Vikki Foulger and their three children. Will was a teacher in a secondary school prior to training for ordained ministry at Cranmer Hall in Durham. The new church is part of a broader diocesan strategy for ‘growing new disciples wider, younger and deeper’ across the city and county of Nottinghamshire. Jonny and the team will work in partnership with churches and organisations already serving among younger people in a city that has one of the youngest age-profiles outside of London.

PRESS RELEASE
Jonny said: “We are so grateful to Bishop Paul and the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham for inviting us to take on this exciting initiative. We are thrilled to be moving to Nottingham and look forward to working together with other churches and groups in serving the people of this wonderful city. We have so much to learn and are most grateful to everyone who has kindly offered encouragement as we embark on this challenging opportunity." The Archdeacon of Nottingham, the Venerable Sarah Clark, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Jonny and Amy and their team from Holy Trinity Brompton to our vibrant city that so many young people call home. We are looking forward to being enriched by the particular gifts that Jonny and the team will bring to our engagement in the city with younger people.” The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Williams, said: “It is an exciting time of opportunity and growth for the Church in this diocese. Congregations of all sizes, traditional and modern, are reaching out to share the Christian faith in fresh ways. Many are also making a huge difference in their communities and offer tens of thousands of volunteer hours serving people in various kinds of need. Young people are interested in the deeper issues of life and faith, and this new venture will be an excellent opportunity to introduce more to the radical message of the real Jesus and the transforming power of his love.” The new church will begin meeting in a temporary location in the autumn prior to moving to a permanent location in 2017. More information will follow in due course.
