There are currently 1,492 national sites using the Prime Time system, facilitating

learning for 57,761 people.

P R I M E T I M EFamily Reading TimeEarly childhood education with a focus on reading and critical thinking equips a child for future success. The mission of PRIME-TIME Family Reading Time is to combat intergenerational illiteracy by engaging young children and their families in reading and discussions.

Prime Time is a set of unique, humanities-focused, and outcomes-based programs designed to engage underserved families

in an exploration of the humanities and early childhood education. Prime Time Family Read-ing time combines storytelling and discussion in one 90-minute session per week for 6 or 8 weeks. A storyteller reads beautifully illustrated, award-winning children’s books that consist of culturally diverse stories from around the world spanning fairy tales, folk tales, fables, historical accounts, and other narrations of real-life circumstances that are familiar to adults and children alike. The discussion leader then guides the group to personally connect

with literature through the Socratic method of open-ended questioning. The program dem-onstrates how literature can enrich one’s life, models strategies for continued family bonding through literature, and provides families critical information on library resources for continued reading once the program ends. Prime Time partners with schools, libraries, community centers, churches, and afterschool programs to provide community outreach and recruit excited participants. Each Prime Time Family Reading Time program provides for up to 25 Parents/Caregivers and their 3 to 10 year old children to participate. Costs including trans-portation, meals and books are provided.

There are currently 1,083 sites in 39 states using the Prime Time system.

The NEH funds 56 humanities councils located in all U.S. states

and jurisdictions. The councils sup-port local humanities programs and

events—like book festivals, film screenings, discussions, and traveling exhibits—and many provide grants to local organizations, scholars and citi-zens to create humanities programs and products. The state humanities councils receive the majority of their funding from the NEH through the Federal/State Partnership Office.

They supplement this funding with support from private donations, foun-dations, corporations, and, in some

cases, state government. Stories about the work of state humanities

council are on the Federal/State Part-nership page on www.neh.gov.

P R I M E T I M EPreschool

Prime Time Preschool, a subdivision of Prime Time Reading Time, is a unique pro-gram for educationally and economically vulnerable families with children who are 3 to 5 years old. Based on the empirically proven Prime Time Family Reading Time model, Prime Time Preschool introduces young children to the humanities, and literature in a way that is developmentally

appropriate and engaging. Prime Time Preschool is focused on literacy acquisition and early literacy skills needed for school readiness, enhancing the development of higher-order think-ing skills, and providing opportunity for experiential learning through exploratory centers.

Prime Time Preschool is a program available to childcare centers, schools with preschool programs, Head Start programs, and other public entities, and focuses on lit-

eracy acquisition and early literacy skills essential to a proper introduction to childhood education. The program benefits parents by demonstrating to parents how to book-share with their children, how to ask questions that encourage critical thinking, how to make reading enjoyable and relevant, and how to encourage children to internalize a love of learning. Prime Time Preschool programs are 6 weeks in duration where participants meet once a week for 90 minutes in a venue provided by the partnering agency.

PROMOTES THEIR CONFIDENCE IN THE SCHOOL. »- Rochelle Wilcox, Prime Time Preschool Program Coordinator and Director, Wilcox Academy of Learning, New Orleans, LA

I D E A L A BPursuit of HappinessWhat does the “pursuit of happiness” really mean? Students from across Oregon gather in Idea Lab, a sum-mer program run by the Oregon Humanities Council, to discuss happiness and how people of different ages, ethnicities, and incomes experience and pursue it.

Idea Lab is a three-day residential learning experience where twenty Oregon high school teachers and over one hundred rising seniors explore the pursuit of happi-

ness through workshops, lectures, films, and discussions. Since 2006, Idea Lab has helped outstanding Oregon teach-ers become involved in an interdisciplinary professional development opportunity and provides a profound, col-lege-like experience for high school students between their junior and senior year. Teachers and teens learning together set Idea Lab apart from most other continuing education and college readiness programs.

Idea Lab 2013 : July 26 – 28 at the University of Portland.

In order to encourage broad par-ticipation statewide in Idea Lab, Oregon Humanities (OH) offers several options for Oregon schools and families. Oregon Humanities covers room and board costs for all teachers and students, and of-fers travel stipends for those who qualify.
