Outcast

With ClaireGraham, MaxineSaid, ChanelAdjei, JoshAtille

Certificate: TBC 5:38

“The hideous thing is this: I want to forgive him. Even after everything, I do. A baby before my 16th birthday and a future as lonely as the surface of the moon and still the sight of him feels like a homecoming, like a song I used to know but somehow forgot.”

This realist drama is set in present day, in a council estate located in Roundshaw, England. When we first meet Lily (Claire Graham), she looks like an ordinary 15 year old, living an ordinary teenage life. However, there is something we don’t know about her. In the beginning Lily introduces herself to the audience as a very dull and depressed character, where she soon later on reveals that she is pregnant. Gabriella Said’s latest film ‘Outcast’ takes us back to her previous feature film ‘Athlete’ that she directed and produced last year (2012).

Both of her films have the same sort of idea and issues relating to young teenagers going through a hard patch where there is something big stopping them from

- making a decision that could possibly change their life forever.

In ‘Athlete’ character Josh (Josh Atille) was alone within the decisions he was making, his mother had passed away and his father had neglected him as he wasn’t in the scene. On the other hand, in her new release ‘Outcast’ Lily’s father isn’t in

the scene but her mother is an estate junkie who couldn’t care less if Lily was dead or alive. Which means that Lily (Claire Graham) has to face life threatening decisions on her own.Lily has a desire to be something big in life, to actually do something

SYNOPSIS Today is Wednesday 16th October, the sun is hidden and grey clouds are rolling in. The weather contrasts with my mood, I am in need of some effective help. Loneliness, independence and vulnerable are the words that describe my inner feelings right now. This has left me with low self-esteem and to be struggling at this precise moment. This unwanted disaster has crashed at the early stages of my life. Of course I wouldn’t plan something like this, it was a mistake. Being pregnant has affected me mentally and physically, leaving my thoughts blank not knowing what to do? I mean bringing a new generation into this world requires experience and a willingness to take on many new responsibilities. I am too young for this situation I don’t know how I am going to adapt, when I can’t even take this into account within my own life. I have seen a lot of teenage girls that thought they could handle having a child so young, which has now led them to adoption or bad parenting. This has doubted me to even think about trying, I have made a promise to myself, to my family, to my friends that I am going to try and be successful through my lifetime and having a child this young is completely out of the picture. I need a way out!

- that could make her family proud. But was this pregnancy stopping Lily from being herself? or could it possibly be the best thing that has happened to her? throughout the film we can spot that the protagonists relationship with her mother is very poor as there is constant arguing and child neglect shown in this short.

The protagonist of this short is imprisoned inside her own body. The shots and slow panning movement of camera connotes her loneliness and isolation. Gabriella done well to show Lily’s feelings through her camera work. However, there are some disappointments throughout the film but was an overall achievement and was
