Ten Minutes Late

One of the regular foursome was sick, so

a new member named George filled in.

He was very good and pleasant company

so they asked him to join them again the

following Sunday. "9.30 okay?"

George said, "Fine, but I may be about

ten minutes late. Wait for me."

The following Sunday George showed up

right on time. Not only that he played

left-handed and beat them.

They agreed to meet the following

Sunday at 9.30. George again said,

"Okay, but I may be about ten minutes

late. Wait for me."

The next Sunday there was George,

punctual to the dot. This time he played

right-handed and beat them again.

"Okay, for 9.30 next Sunday?" one of

the foursome asked.

George said, "Sure if I’m ten minutes

late…"

Another golfer jumped in. "Wait a

minute… You always say you may be ten

minutes late. But you’re always right on

time and you beat us whether you play

right or left handed."

George said, "Well, that’s true – I’m

superstitious. If I wake up and my wife

is sleeping on her right side, I play

right-handed. If she’s sleeping on her

left side, I play left-handed."

"What if she’s lying on her back?"

George said, "That’s when I’m ten

minutes late!"

My enthusiasm

Not a single person may be there

who haven’t passed by that waythrough which I am passing at this

moment but I wonder that if those

people felt that same vibrations asmy mind did. I often hit the stone

that stands by my way in order toheal my anxiety, I often tap my

feet in the rhythm of everystimulating music that calms me

down, I often laugh out loud toexpel those unspoken words inside

me and these activities worth a lotfor me as it bears a huge sense

for me.

Living in those childhood days didnot matter because emotions

overcame me but slowly andsteadily when time passed by and

I grew up my emotions anddesires modified causing aturnover in my life. The milk and

porridge, which during mychildhood was enough to treat my

appetite, turned out to be atasteless meal. The dresses, which

during my childhood meant tocover my body, are now checked

for the change they produce in myappearance. Time not only

changed my life but the reason ofmy living as well.

I can’t take anything so easy.

Countless emotions drag me

whenever I engage in any sort ofactivities. I keep on anticipatingthings inside me even when I justsit or have a nap in my bed.

Nothing is there which I feelimpossible. When I want anything

I really go for it and ultimately get

it. I hit the ball to see how fast itmoves. I hit the guitar to see what

sound it makes. I drop the stone

in the water to see how big circleit makes. I am an avid reader too.

I kill my curiosities by readingvarious books. Human being in my

definition is an enthusiasticanimal. Don’t rule him and set him

free if you want him to be the realhuman. I don’t really accept when

people put a big question mark onmy movements and laugh at my

enthusiasm and give no value tomy point of views. I always stick

to my decision. No one can makeme miss any opportunities that

come my way because I believethat my experiences are m

greatest strength. It really pissesme off when I see elder people ofour society ruling over the young

and killing their strength andabilities and demoralize them.

Instead of encouraging andrejuvenating their power they

teach them to be still like anocean. Isn’t it a matter of shame?

My enthusiasm is my eternal

power that has helped me torealize to follow good things and

discard the bad ones. It has addedspices in my life. I suggest the

youth to be realistic by

accumulating their strengths andmaking their presence a valuablegift to the world.

THE DREAMLAND of NEPALI STUDENTS: AMERICA

These days, many students aretrying to go to America. Their mainintention seems to be eliminating thepoverty that stacked throughout their

life. They think that if they could beemployed in America, they would earnto solve their problem of poverty.Everyone is seen to make their futurebright anyhow, whatever their presentis. They think that America is only thebest place wherethey can maketheir dream cometrue. This dreamhas helped them a

lot to be competentenough to be ableto compete to go to

America andenrolled in the bestuniversity andemployed in thebest job as well.

Greaterportion of thepopulation of ourcountry are livingunder poverty andthis needs to beeliminatedanyhow. The students and otherpeople going to America wouldcontribute to solve this problem bysending their earning as a remittance. They would learn many newinventions made in the field of

technology, business, banking andfinance, etc. If they could beencouraged to comeback to the countrythis would be beneficial for thecountry. The knowledge they havegained could be utilized, so that theoverall development can be madepossible. Country need not have to be

dependent on the skillful manpower ofabroad nation.

Country needs to be competentotherwise developed country would

ignore and dominate. To solve thiswould be problem; the country shouldcome up with the strategy wheremany of our own skilled manpowercould be employed. Skilled manpowerthat has abandoned the country would

comeback tocontribute fromtheir side to developtheir motherland. They are never

happy to work in America beingdominated beingskillful also. Hencethe country shouldcreate such anenvironment wherethey can comebackto the country andwork easily notbeing repented oncoming back leavingan attractive jobthere. Countryshould always be

able to utilize the resources for itsbetterment. Any initiative done by thecountry should create new thought inthe mind of fresh graduate thatsweating for the development ofmotherland is far more better than for

another nation. They should be forcedto think that country is expecting atleast a little from each and everyperson who has remained out of thecountry to get it developed. Then theywould think that they should be wellequipped to fulfill this expectation. Ifthis could be done, our skilled

manpower being utilized in abroadwould come back to work to make ourcountry competent.

We have many resources yet tobe exploited because of insufficient

skilled manpower. So if they can bebrought back this problem could easilybe solved. This can have multi-benefits the country like ours. Lifestandard of people could be increasedmaking them employed in the projectslaunched. This can also help to reducepoverty and increased GDP (GrossDomestic Product).

The first and foremost thing ourcountry should do is to take initiative

to bring back the skilled manpowerthat has always been a greater loss forthe country. Country needs to payhigh, hiring the efficient and skilledpeople from outside. Therefore our

financial resources seem to beunnecessarily wasting. If this could besolved, the finance we have beenutilizing to hire them could be utilizedin launching a new project where ourskilled people could be employedbringing them back.

BEING JOB-SATISFIED

Its all in my mind that my friendsaying, “I enjoy good status, people giveme a lot of respect, but something is

missing. There is no job satisfaction. This is no thing else but someexpressions of dissatisfaction. Hehimself was not able to pin point thecause of dissatisfaction. How ever, whatis important is that he is unhappy.

Some of the behaviors, which canpoint towards dissatisfaction at work, are:

1.   Absenteeism2.  Lack of communication

3.

Disinterest4.  Conflicting among teammembers or colleagues

5.  Don’t care attitude6.  Restlessness etc.

Peopledissatisfied with the job because theythink there isnothing forhim / her tolook forwardto or there issomethingthere, whichhe/she doesn’t look forward to.

Following are the important factors, which contribute in job satisfaction orreducing dissatisfaction.

1 Sense of importance; It is equally important for every

person in an organization to be doingsomething that makes him/herfeel proud of him/her. Perceived valueof the work that he /she do is also animportant factor influencing the jobsatisfaction.

2. Clarity about roles andresponsibilities:

It is crucial for a person to know

clearly what he/she is supposed to do

and what are the organizationalexpectations from him / her.

3. Clarity about how he/she isgoing to evaluate:

He/she should be aware of theparameters on the basis of whichhe/she and his /her performance areevaluated or would be evaluated.

4. Supportive working conditions:Organization should work towards

creating a work environment, whichmeets the basic needs, as it will help inkeeping employees happy and

motivated. Workingcondition of anorganizationencouragespeople to givetheir best;people aspirefor challengein work andnot

challenging work conditions. Theyseem to be comfort level when there is aconducive working environment.

5. Supportive teamwork: An opportunity for social interaction,

friendly co-workers and supervisorscontribute a lot to job satisfaction. Atthe end of the day, people experiencefatigue, more on account ofunsupportive and unhelpful colleaguesand less on account of the actualquantum of work.6. Rewards systems:

Page 6: DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 6/45

People feel comfortable workingcondition in an organization, which istransparent, and fair. In fact employee’sperception about fairness is a cruciallink to job satisfaction or

dissatisfaction.

7. Recognition and appreciation:This is in fact a basic need of every

individual, every person aspires to benoticed and appreciated for his/hercontribution. If others don’t care abouthim/her and his/her role, he/she alsostops caring.

8. An opportunity to use skills, competencies and potential:

This is in fact one of the mostimportant factors, a person who doesnot get an opportunity of doing sostarts feeling restless and frustrated.

9. An opportunity to grow andupgrade one’s skills, abilities andcompetencies:

This again is very important as growthand development are the essence of life. Without an opportunity of growth, people start suffering with a sense ofstagnation that leads to disinterest andapathy.

Five surgeons Five surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients on the operating table.

The first surgeon says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."

The second responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them iscolor coded."

The third surgeon says, "No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside

them is in alphabetical order."

The fourth surgeon chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers...those guys always

understand when you have a few parts left over at the end, and when the job takeslonger than you said it would."

But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed: "You're all wrong. Politicians

are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, and no spine, and the head and

DE THDeath is inevitable

So will I die one day?

The day will as usual be

The sun on the skyThe birds on the tree

And the nature on its rush

The day will be as usual

Because death is not new

Death follows life and so if we are here

One day we must be there

There… it depends upon something

That’s your deeds good or bad.

So fear death, fear life

And this will make fear of

Your deeds...bad deeds

So do good if u want good

Good life after death.

Good, what does this mean?

Good not just for yourself

But for others beyond youBe kind, gentle and polite

And so will others be unto u

Always remember of the world

That’s beyond u and your existence

Believe in life after death

And you’ll believe in good deeds

Though selfish though

It does good to others

And good for external satisfactionItself is no bad!

IMPROVING PRESENTATION SKILLS

One of the main aims of the BBA program is to improve our communication skills and oral

presentations are important part of that skill. The syllabus directs the teachers to help

improve the presentation skills of the students with the help of case presentations, however, adequate attention has not been given to this particular aspect of our studies.

Hopefully, this article will help fulfill at least some of our weaknesses.

Making an oral presentation effective requires close attention in every aspect of it.Following are the areas, which have to be addressed to make the presentation effective:

Content:

The material of your presentation should be concise, to the point and tell an interestingstory. In addition to the obvious things like content and visual aids, the following are just

as important as the audience will be subconsciously taking them in:

•  Your voice - how  you say it is as important as what you say

•  Body language - a subject in its own right and something about which much hasbeen written and said. In essence, your body movements express what your

attitudes and thoughts really   are. Appearance  - first impressions influence theaudience's attitudes to you. Dress appropriately for the occasion.

As with most personal skills oral communication cannot be taught. Instructors can

only point the way. So as always, p r a c t i c e is e s se n t i a l  , both to improve your skillsgenerally and also to make the best of each individual presentation you make.

Preparation

Prepare the structure of the talk carefully and logically, just as you would for a writtenreport. What are:

•  The objectives of the talk?•  The main points you want to make?

Make a list of these two things as your starting point

Write out the presentation in rough, just like a first draft of a written report. Review the

draft. You will find things that are irrelevant or superfluous - delete them. Check the story

is consistent and flows smoothly. If there are things you cannot easily express, possiblybecause of doubt about your understanding, it is better to leave them unsaid.

Never  read from a script. It is also unwise to have the talk written out in detail as a

prompt sheet - the chances are you will not locate the thing you want to say amongst allthe other text. You should know most of what you want to say - if you don't then you

should not be giving the talk! So prepare c u e c a r d s   which have key words and phrases(and possibly sketches) on them. Postcards are ideal for this. Don't forget to numberthe cards in case you drop them.

Remember to mark on your cards the visual aids that go with them so that the right OHPor slide is shown at the right time

Page 12: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 12/45

Rehearse your presentation - to yourself at first and then in front of some colleagues. Theinitial rehearsal should consider how the words and the sequence of visual aids gotogether. How will you make effective use of your visual aids?

Making the presentation

Greet the audience (for example, 'Good morning, ladies and gentlemen'), and tell them

who you are. Good presentations then follow this formula:

•  tell the audience what you are going to tell them,•  then tell them,

•  at the end tell them what you have told them.

Keep to the time allowed. If you can, keep it short. It's better to under-run than over-run.As a rule of thumb, allow 2 minutes for each general  overhead transparency or PowerPoint

slide you use, but longer for any that you want to use for developing specific points.35mm slides are generally used more sparingly and stay on the screen longer. However,

the audience will get bored with something on the screen for more than 5 minutes,

especially if you are not actively talking about it. So switch the display off, or replace the

slide with some form of 'wallpaper' such as a company logo.

Stick to the plan for the presentation, don't be tempted to digress - you will eat up timeand could end up in a dead-end with no escape!

Unless explicitly told not to, leave time for discussion - 5 minutes is sufficient to allow

clarification of points. The session chairman may extend this if the questioning becomesinteresting.

At the end of your presentation ask if there are any questions - avoid being terse when

you do this as the audience may find it intimidating (i.e. it may come across as any

questions? - if there are, it shows you were not paying attention). If questions are slow in

coming, you can start things off by asking a question of the audience - so have oneprepared.

Delivery

Speak clearly. Don't shout or whisper - judge the acoustics of the room.

Don't rush, or talk deliberately slowly. Be natural - although not conversational.

Deliberately pause at key points - this has the effect of emphasizing the importance of a

particular point you are making.

Avoid jokes - always disastrous unless you are a natural expert

To make the presentation interesting, change your delivery, but not to obviously, e.g.:

•  Speed

•  Pitch of voice

Page 13: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 13/45

Use your hands to emphasize points but don't indulge in to much hand waving. Peoplecan, over time, develop irritating habits. Ask colleagues occasionally what they think ofyour style.

Look at the audience as much as possible, but don't fix on an individual - it can be

intimidating. Pitch your presentation towards the back of the audience, especially in largerrooms.

Don't face the display screen behind you and talk to it. Other annoying habits include:

•  Standing in a position where you obscure the screen. In fact, positively check for

anyone in the audience who may be disadvantaged and try to accommodate them.•  Muttering over a transparency on the OHP projector plate and not realizing that

you are blocking the projection of the image. It is preferable to point to the screen thanthe foil on the OHP (apart from the fact that you will probably dazzle yourself with thebrightness of the projector)

Avoid moving about too much. Pacing up and down can unnerve the audience, althoughsome animation is desirable.

Keep an eye on the audience's body language. Know when to stop and also when to cutout a piece of the presentation.

Visual Aids

Visual aids significantly improve the interest of a presentation. However, they must be

relevant to what you want to say. A careless design or use of a slide can simply get in the

way of the presentation. What you use depends on the type of talk you are giving. Hereare some possibilities:

•  Overhead projection transparencies (OHPs)

•  35mm slides

•  Computer projection (PowerPoint, applications such as Excel, etc)

•  Video, and film,

Cartoon Corner

Page 14: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 14/45

•  Real objects - either handled from the speaker's bench or passed around•  Flipchart or blackboard - possibly used as a 'scratch-pad' to expand on a point

Keep it simple though - a complex set of hardware can result in confusion for speaker andaudience. Make sure you know in advance how to operate the equipment and also when

you want particular displays to appear. Sometimes a technician will operate the

equipment. Arrange beforehand, what is to happen and when and what signals you will

use. Edit your slides as carefully as your talk - if a slide is superfluous then leave it out. Ifyou need to use a slide twice, duplicate it. And always check your slides - fortypographical errors, consistency of fonts and layout.

Slides and OHPs should contain the minimum information necessary. To do otherwise risks

making the slide unreadable or will divert your audience's attention so that they spendtime reading the slide rather than listening to you.

Try to limit words per slide to a maximum of 10. Use a reasonable size font and a typeface

which will enlarge well. Typically use a minimum 18pt Times Roman on OHPs, andpreferably larger. A guideline is: if you can read the OHP from a distance of 2 meters(without projection) then it's probably OK

Avoid using a diagram prepared for a technical report in your talk. It will be too detailedand difficult to read.

Use color on your slides but avoid orange and yellow which do not show up very well when

projected. For text only, white or yellow on blue is pleasant to look at and easy to read.Books on presentation techniques often have quite detailed advice on the design of slides. If possible consult an expert such as the Audio Visual Center

Avoid adding to OHPs with a pen during the talk - it's messy and the audience will be

fascinated by your shaking hand! On this point, this is another good reason for pointing tothe screen when explaining a slide rather than pointing to the OHP transparency.

Room lighting should be considered. Too much light near the screen will make it difficultto see the detail. On the other hand, a completely darkened room can send the audienceto sleep. Try to avoid having to keep switching lights on and off, but if you do have to dothis, know where the light switches are and how to use them.

Finally...

Enjoy yourself. The audience will be on your side and want to hear what you have to say!

Effective teamwork

Whether in the workplace, or in sports, or amongst members of a community, effectiveteamwork can produce extraordinary results. However, that is easier said than done, for, effective teamwork does not happen automatically. There are a number of factorsthat are required to cohere together, working seamlessly, for an effective team todevelop and work. So, what makes an effective team? Well, given below are some ofthe factors that are vital for building a good team that works successfully:

E f f ec t i v e Team w o r k i s abou t

Good L eade r sh i p :    One of the mostimportant aspects of effectiveteamwork is effective leadership. Thismeans that the team leader should havethe skills to create and maintain a working culture that is positive. Thishelps to motivate and even inspire the

team members to get involved increating an environment where there isa positive approach to work, along withhigh levels of commitment. A goodteam leader is a person who not onlyfocuses himself/herself on the purposeand direction of the team, but alsomakes sure that the other members ofthe team share this focus. A good teamleader also has to be able to promote ahigh level of morale amongst the team

members so that they feel supportedand valued. This is particularly usefulfor preventing the bane of most officecultures – that of backbiting, rumormongering, gossip mongering, andcronyism – which can derail the effortsof any teamwork.

E f f ec t i v e Team w o r k i s abou t

E f f ec t i v e Com m un i c a t i o n :    It goes without saying that communication is a

vital factor of interpersonal interaction, and the very term ‘teamwork’represents interpersonal interaction.Hence, one of the key aspects ofeffective teamwork is opencommunication, wherein it enables themembers of the team to articulate theirfeelings, express their plans, share their

ideas, and understand each other’s viewpoints. Grappling with and sortingout the complexities involved incommunication is thus one of thechallenges of developing and sustainingeffective teamwork.

E f f ec t i v e Team w o r k i s abou t

De f i n i ng C l ea r - c u t Ro l es :    It isnecessary for teams to know clearly what their purpose is, what role eachmember of the team has to play, whateach person is responsible for, what isnot within their scope, and theresources they

have to achieve their goals. The teamleader can enable this by defining the

purpose in a clear-cut manner up front. The team, on their part, can help by building processes wherein the rolesand scope of each member as well asthe team are kept in focus, and avoidinganything that undermines effectiveteamwork.

E f f ec t i v e Team w o r k i s abou t

Cr ea t i ng P r ocedu r es f o r Con f l i ct

Reso l u t i on :    No matter how good a

team may be, conflicts will inevitableoccur some time or the other. The best way to counter this is to havestructured methods of resolving them.Team members should have a way ofexpressing their opinions without fearof causing offense to anyone. Directconfrontation can also be allowed in a

Page 16: DAV Magazine Draft

moderated manner, so that mattersthat may have been simmering can beaired out and cleared. Instead ofignoring and procrastinating theseissues, a hands-on approach thatresolves them quickly is better. In fact,it is advisable for the team leader to

actually sit with the parties in conflictand work out the differences betweenthem, without taking sides and makingsure to remain objective. Eventually, the conflicts can actually be used as achance to reveal underlying problemsthat may be in existence within theteam.

E f f ec t i v e Team w o r k i s abou t

Se t t i n g a Good Examp l e :    And

finally, effective teamwork can onlycome about when the team leader sets agood example, which can be emulated by the team members. In order to keepthe team committed, positive, and

motivated, the team leaderhimself/herself has to have all thesequalities and make it apparent thathe/she does. After all, the team leaderis the person the team looks to forsupport, direction and guidance, hence, any cynicism or negativity on his/her

part is picked up by the team and isreflected in their teamwork. So, even ifit means forcing yourself to, it isimportant to maintain a supportive andpositive attitude always.

Thus, a number of issues must beaddressed if a team is to be effective. If we pay attention to the above-mentioned factors, then we can obtainsynergy out of the team and the

collective efforts will lead to goalattainment else the internal hindrances will prevail and the team will beineffective.

…Being an Entrepreneur

After the completion of BBA, TrivhuvanUniversity expects the graduates to

brandish the entrepreneurial skills andcreate jobs for the society and not justseek for jobs. Entrepreneurs contributegreatly to a society through theirinnovative ideas that can have asignificant impact on the society. However, not all people can beenterpreneurs. So, what are thequalities that distinguish anentrepreneur from an ordinaryperson. How do Larry Page andSergey Brin (founders ofGoogle) differ from otherStamford graduates who aresatisfied with 10 to 5 job? Well, there are a fewcharacteristics thatdifferentiateentrepreneurs fromothers.

Personal Qualities:

•  Patient and persevering. Successfulentrepreneurs are normally willingto work long, hard hours and willingto weather the highs and lows of business

•  Love a challenge and are driven by aneed to challenge one's self

•  High tolerance for ambiguous, unstructured situations

•  Possess a desire for change andconstant improvement.Entrepreneurs frequently monitorsocial trends and adopt newtechnologies

•   Action-oriented•  Think positively and quickly get

over their failures

•  Learn quickly, enjoy feedback, andare able to learn from mistakes

• Both listen and communicate well•  Independent and extroverted

•  Self-confident and determined tosucceed. Entrepreneurs should becomfortable with having all of thedecisions rest upon them

•  Creative, innovative, and open-minded

Physical and PsychologicalQualities:

•   Ample health andenergy

•  Emotional stability•  Money-enough to

start the business, as well as to support yourself during therisky start-up period

•  Time-A business requires

a lot of time and attention, especially during its launch

•  Influence from entrepreneurial rolemodels

•  Personal intelligence

Although entrepreneurs tend to relymore on their mental attitudes andphilosophies, it is still important topossess particular business skills.

Business and Managerial Skills:

•   Able to set realistic attainable goals•  Love to take risks, but ensure that

these risks are calculated, notfoolish

Page 18: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 18/45

•   Able to exert influence andinspiration on others without a needto impose status or power

•   Able to get along with and adapt toall types of people

•   Able to trust others and give outresponsibility

•  Possess good communication skills(the ability to put your ideas into writing, as well as to persuasivelypresent your ideas to a group ofpeople)

•  Possess general financing, production, administration, humanresources, sales, and marketingskills

You must also take a look outside

yourself and observe whether yourlifestyle is suitable toentrepreneurship, particularly sinceentrepreneurs cannot depend on jobsecurity or retirement.

Lifestyle Considerations:

•  Other commitments andobligations-your decision will notonly affect you; get the opinions andinput from others

•  Family-there are many addedresponsibilities associated withhaving a family. You must not onlyprovide food, clothing, and shelter, but also adequate love, attention, and security. Therefore, you shouldguarantee that your new venture

does not put others at risk•   Your own happiness and whether

you are passionate enough about your business idea to ensure that you will enjoy it daily. Considering your natural talents, skills, andsources of enjoyment may lead youto the best business idea

All of these characteristics, combined with know-how, personal contacts, and the development of businessexpertise, generally separate thesuccessful from the unsuccessful inentrepreneurialism. Act wisely bytaking a look at yourself-your needs,

desires, and capabilities-beforetaking the plunge into the world of business.

Nevertheless, be aware thatentrepreneurial characteristics aresomewhat flexible and do have thepotential to be developed. If youanticipate any areas of difficulty, itis best to deal with them soonerrather than later.

Some argue that entrepreneurial skillsare genetic while others keep theopinion that they can be taught andlearnt. However, recent studiesshow that some of the characterstics we mentioned can be learned whileothers can not be. So how many ofthese characters do u think u have?Let the ENTREPRENEUR inside you express !!!

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Every individual differs in attitude, status

and behavior. What one deserves and determines

may be an issue of conflict for many others.Similarly, attraction varies accordingly. Some take

it as likeliness, some as their way of survival and

some as just killing time. Every single one goes

through this age period once in a lifetime.

It also couldn’t stop myself from falling over

it. It occurred to me at my age of attraction. She

was a phantom of delight and her image was all

over me- simply she was my addiction. But every

time I saw her I missed her. My love for her

remained undiscovered. I never was able to or ever

tried to express my feelings, neither I did make a

proposal. Before standing as a friend by her side, I

lost even my shadow that used to be next to her. I

don’t know what was my mistake and why did she

appear to be a worst nightmare at all.

A lot of conflict arose all around us and we

just departed for no reason. I only remember the

days we talked as strangers waiting at a bus

station. She used to say we could not only be

friends and today we are not more than a drop in

an ocean. I am away but she still hunts me in my

heart, soul and in my mind. It’s enough for me but

every time I seem to be having a curse of smile. I

do see her and my lips remain as years without

smile. I used to think of being same towards her

but I can’t tell if it’s true or a dream that we

couldn’t be friends.

And today I can’t run after her any more. She’shappy with her own life and my love doesn’t mean a

hill of bean to her. Neither I have any way of

survival nor can I save

my dignity. Every time

I see her all of mystrength walks away. I

can’t support to stand

strong without her. I

cannot show my tears

nor can I remain happy

anymore. Today I am

no more than dead.

But also I can find her

even today somewhere

inside me. There’s not

a single day that I

have not remembered

her but it’s all vain. My

tears roll down with

the drops of rain

remained unseen. And

only after such a long

time of pain in life I

came to know that one

deserves even if s/he

tries hard because

REMITTANCE & ITS ROLE IN NEPALESE ECONOMY

Remittance is a method of transferringmoney from one place to another or fromone country to another. There arevarious methods of transferring funds.

Remittances are transferred either fromorganized sectors like banks, financialinstitutions or authorized moneytransferring agencies, or informallythrough unorganized mediums likeHawala, Hundi or physical movement offunds with people. In Nepal, it is foundthat more than 50 percent of remittanceis being transferred throughinformal and unorganizedchannels.

Remittance has an importantrole in the overall developmentof countries, more particularly, for developing nations. Nepalhas a substantial percentageof its active human resourcesemployed in foreign lands andremittance plays aninstrumental role in reducing

poverty and increasing incomedistribution. Despite politicaluncertainty, slowdown inexport of handicraft, carpet, readymadegarment and the conflict betweengovernment and  Maoist that Nepal hasundergone for more than a decade, thepurchasing power of both capital andregular goods has gone up, thanks to theincremental amount of inward remittanceflowing into the country every year.

Management Association of Nepal (MAN),Ramesh Koirala, treasurer of MAN saidthe government had earned revenueworth USD 1.5 billion from foreignemployment in the fiscal year 2004/05.In the fiscal year 2005/06, the revenue isexpected to have crossed USD 2.4 billion.

As per the statistics, out of the totalnumber of people going abroad foremployment, unskilled workers accountfor 75 per cent, semi-skilled workers 20

per cent and skilled workers a mere 5per cent.

Declining population in most of theindustrialized economies, and theemergence of India and China as the two

Asian economic powers will further boostmigration in the next couple of decades.

It is quite interesting to notethat most of our trainedmanpower has gone to the

advanced economies such asthe US and other Europeancountries, owing to their flexibleimmigration laws in order tooffset the labor scarcity.

The latest statistics show thatevery eleventh person in Nepalis getting something from theremittance. At last count in

2006 the number of Nepaleseworking abroad stood at over1.5 million. The Nepalese

workers are mostly employed incountries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar,Malaysia, Kuwait, Hong Kong, India,Oman, Singapore, South Korea, UAE,USA, UK, Macao and Australia.

Remittance has played a major role inreducing the poverty. If we look at the

official statistics of 2004, it is close toabout 12 percent but we expect that alot of these activities are not captured insurvey or in the statistics published bythe Nepal Rastra Bank, as they also useinformal channels like friends, relativesand co-worker to send money to theirfamily, relatives in Nepal. If we examinein real terms, the contribution of

Page 21: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 21/45

remittances to GDP could be about 18 to22 percent.

The study has found that many peopleare spending the remittance to educatetheir children. We have seen a lot of

correlations between the money cominginto the rural areas and increasingenrolment of children in schools.Remittances have played a major role inimproving the overall social and humandevelopment activities. There are manyfamilies in villages, which are totallydependent, even for their basic needs,on the remittance coming from their kinor relatives from abroad.

*Department of Labor & EmploymentPromotion

Measuring with an economic yardstick, remittance is found to have differenteffects at various levels. From the micro-level i.e. household level, it helpsincrease income and consumptionpattern and shows increased savingsleading to higher living standard ofdependents. At macro level, remittance

inflow helps increase the foreignexchange reserve of the country and atthe same time becomes instrumental indeveloping local commodity markets andlocal employment opportunities, ultimately resulting in economicprosperity of the entire country.

So, the government should developforeign employment as an industrialsector and encourage more and morepeople to go abroad and ensure thatremittance received is invested inproductive sector back in the country.

Despite remittance huge contribution inNepalese economy, governments havenot previously recognized this sector inits economy agenda and have notprepared any long-term plan to improvethe situation of this field. This sector isnot properly analyzed, managed andimproved.

With the Labor Act of 1985, theGovernment of Nepal officially recognized

the potential value of foreignemployment, but the government is yetto develop a coherent labor exportpolicy. Every five years, the governmentproduces a plan as a policy guideline, butit is not properly implemented.Meanwhile, procedural hurdles, lengthydocumentation and process as well aslack of professionalism among the laborrecruiting agencies are some of the

issues that both the government and thestakeholders need to address on time.Manpower migration from Nepal is stilllargely privately organized whereindividuals make use of their personalnetworks to make arrangements forforeign employment.

How To Be a Customer

Majority of marketing focuses on how tosell to customers. Very little attention ispaid to why and how customers shouldsell themselves to marketers. As a

customer, do you ever think about how you can get a leg up on yourcompetition--the other customerscompeting for the attention and goodwillof the seller?

We all know that not all customers aretreated equal. Big customers get bettertreatment than small ones. Frequentcustomers get better treatment thanoccasional customers. Most of usrecognize – and accept – such

discrimination.

But how can you punch above your weight as a customer to get bettertreatment than your importance to theseller deserves? How-to books targetingcustomers often focus on how to game thesystem, how to return the cocktail dresson Monday after you’ve worn it once onSaturday, how to exploit manufacturer warranties and satisfaction guarantees

(often, ironically, at the expense of otherconsumers), how to pay late or not at all.

Here are five behaviors that, in the eyes of vendors, make for a good customer:

Be Demanding. Make sure the vendorknows you have other options that you’regoing to seek out more than one bid. Askfor references, a good supplier will beglad to provide them. Don’t be afraid tonegotiate and pin the vendor down, but

don’t overdo it.

Be Respectful. If you want your vendor todo a good job, respect him (or her). Treathim as a professional. Don’t be haughty.Be on time. Ask his opinion. The goldenrule applies to customer behavior as well

as vendor behavior.

Be Reliable. Do what you say you’ll do.Don’t keep the salesperson waiting ifshe’s come to your office for an

appointment. Pay on time. Don’t try tonickel and dime the seller. Don’t ask forfree value added services that weren’tpart of the original deal. Be Surprising.Reward a job well done. Leave a tip. Pay alittle over the contract price if the seller’scosts clearly exceed expectations orpromise to refer the supplier to a friend. You may want to do business with thesame supplier again (Why waste time onselecting another vendor from scratch?).

You’re going to enjoy timelier and morecustomized service next time if you leavea good impression.

Be Engaging. Differentiate yourself as acustomer by engaging the seller in somefriendly conversation. You may get anextra shot of whipped cream in your cafémocha if you’re nice to the barista. Treatthe seller as an equal, as a problem solverrather than a mere order taker. The sellermay be able to confirm or broaden yourperspective. In some cases, you may evenhave expertise that can help the seller doa better job for you.

Obviously, when demand exceeds supply, customers know they’re going to have toget in line, perhaps pay more than listprice or wait longer than usual for service. The marketer has to choose whichcustomers get priority – and goodcustomers are going to be higher up the

pecking order. What’s your experience? Are there additional behaviors you thinkmake you a more valuable customer inthe eyes of vendors?

THEMES AND DREAMS OF MY GENERATION

I thought my generation, the first of the21st  century, understands that life is 1 %inspiration and 99% perspiration. So I was perplexed when I found its three D’s,Desperation, Dependence and Dreams.

How highly educated we are! Howcivilized we are! How much modernized we are! But if we are not practical orrational, if we don’t follow our hearts andare not firm in our determination, the tag“educated” will give a sense of purpose toso called intellectuals.

My generation has probably forgottenthat apple seeds grow apple, and notchestnuts. The output is the same as theinput. Even knowing this, our hearts are

closed to this process. Is this good? Doesit show humanity? Certainly not! This isthe disintegration of mind, spirit and body of today’s youth.

Ironically, peace seems to be today’s buzzword. History is a proof that violenceis always an inalienable part of thesociety, which continues to prosper, andpeace is synonymous with a civilizationnear extinction.

The pace and direction of youth scares

off anyone who understands that theactions of the young will always provefatal. We have become perfectlysuccessful in discouraging a creativeindividual. If this continues, mygeneration will leave a large vacuum inthe history of tomorrow with nocontribution to this society.

Yes, my generation replete with carsand mobiles. Previous generation wasreplete with professionals like Upendra

Devkota, singer like Britney Spears withactors like Pierce Brosnan. It also haspeace seekers like Arundhati Roy,politicians like Condalizza Rice and billionaire like Bill Gates. There are evensocial workers like Mother Teresa and Anuradha Koirala.

I can see the history questioning my

generation, “ what have you been doing?”of course we will reply that we have beenseeking, like all rational people. As for my part, I’m ready with myanswer. I was dreaming of a Pajero in

Cape Town. Alas! there seems to benothing more for my generation to do.

 James Blunt

Some ageing rock star once said that what

he feared most, in a musical sense, was thesongwriting well running dry. That's

something that's unlikely ever to worry

James Blunt. He has, it can be said withoutexaggeration, lived a life that should provide enough material for a dozen

albums, with sufficient left over for a

couple of screenplays. Sure - that's whatall the singer-songwriters say. But this is a

definitively different singer-songwriter.

James Blunt’s family have served in onekind of army or another since 995A.D. A

long line of warriors. Savages really. Not a

musical bone in any one of their bodies. The only music he heard growing up was

“Happy Birthday” and “Silent Night”. His

father considered all music, even classical,

to be unnecessary noise. Although Jameswas not one to rock the family boat, he

didn’t really think he was going to join the

army – it sort of crept up on him. Plus hisfamily didn’t have a boat. Aged fourteen

he just held the teenage conviction that he

would have an interesting life – maybethat’s why he picked the guitar? Then

again, maybe if he hadn’t, he would have

tripped over it. He went to University and

studied Aerospace ManufacturingEngineering and Sociology, spending most

lectures asleep on the floor at the back. In

much the same way, he ended up in thearmy. In essence, one day he was sleepingoff a hangover at the back of a sociology

lecture hall and the next thing he knew he

was in Kosovo with a gun and a guitarstrapped to the side of a tank, wondering

who he could possibly sleep with to get

out of this war. To break up the superattenuated monotony, James would

sometimes stroll through Serb villages

wearing an East German cap singing, “Allwe are saying is give peace a chance”.

“We were peace-keepers at that point,” he

explained, shrugging helplessly.

So how did the music get into him, youmight ask? Well if you were sent to

 boarding school aged seven, studied

Engineering by mistake (“I thought wewere going to fly planes, but we just

pulled metals apart – the brochure wasvery misleading.”), joined the army by

default, guarded The Queen, buried TheQueen Mother and pranced around

London like a tit for Japanese tourists to

photograph, what you’re going to want todo very much after that, besides getting

stoned and laid, is put your gun down,

pick up a guitar and make an album inAmerica with Linda Perry. So James came

to Los Angeles in September 2003 to

record with Tom Rothrock et al. At nighthe’d go to bars, bringing with him hisvaluable British accent (in the U.K., too

posh for some people – in LA, the best

thing she’d heard all night) and the factthat like 50 Cent he’d been shot at

numerous times, but unlike the Cent, had

dodged the bullets. From birth in a military hospital inTidworth, to Harrow School, to Aerospace

Manufacturing Engineering, to the Royal

Military Academy Sandhurst, to TheHousehold Cavalry, to Kosovo, to

Buckingham Palace, to a recording studio

in Los Angeles. How did James get fromthere to here? Only James Blunt’s

hairdresser knows for certain, and either

he isn’t talking or James cuts his own hair, and it’s up to you to join the dots – there

Page 28: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 28/45

are ten of them on the album.

Take "No Bravery", the song that closeshis debut album, "Back to Bedlam", for

instance: It was written in Kosovo in 1999,

while James was a reconnaissance officerin the British army. On patrol around

Pristina, he kept his guitar bolted to the

outside of his tank. But in quieter

moments, it came out, as he wrote aboutlife as a 22-year-old peacekeeper in the

aftermath of one of the decade's bloodiest

civil wars. The rest of his unit ordered himto keep the noise down as he wrote and

sang in the post-midnight stillness. He

didn't keep the noise down. "'No Bravery'

is the only complete song I wrote inKosovo. I wrote it lying by my tank in my

sleeping bag with my boots on. You had to

sleep with your boots on. The song is pretty fatalistic. The rest of the album is

fatalistic," he says wryly.

But his Kosovan experience is only one

aspect of a new artist who's destined to

find his way into a lot of recordcollections. Essentially, James is a find -

an old soul who's somehow unafflicted by

cynicism, a young writer who sounds likeshe's been doing this for years, an angelic

voice who's had a hell of a ride. Elton

John, with whom he shares a manager,

thinks “You’re Beautiful”, is a modernsuccessor to John's own "Your Song". An

astute comparison, because much of "Back

to Bedlam" is reminiscent of John's early-career best. Meanwhile, Tom Rothrock,

who produced the album, sees James as a

potential British answer to a couple ofother clients, Beck and Elliott Smith.

Rothrock had never heard of James until

he stumbled across a live track he

performed at last year's South bySouthwest, upon which the producer was

so smitten that he instantly agreed to work

on "Back to Bedlam".

What's odd is that a military family like

the Blunts - his father, a career Colonel, has only recently left the army - should

spawn a James. As he tells it, his

upbringing was the traditional sort thatscarcely seems to exist anymore: born in

an army hospital in Hampshire, he was

sent to boarding school at seven, excelled

at science and maths, got a pilot's licenseat 16 ("I can fly anything with a single

engine – Tiger Moths, Spitfires"), did a

spell at Bristol University, and then,"because my dad was pushing for it",

joined the army. He eventually made

Captain, and was the first British officer

into Pristina, leading a column of 30,000 peacekeeping troops.

Music, though, has always been hismainstay. Actually, this needs to be

qualified. James got into music lateishly,

the result of growing up in a musiclesshouse that didn't possess a CD player. "My

dad was really practical, and saw music as

just noise. The only CD player was in thecar, and we had just three CDs. When he

went away to school, though, he learned

piano, then appeared in a school musical, and that was it. From then on, he listened

and learned as much as he could. A love of

Queen  and Dire Straits  came and quickly

went. Picking up a friend's guitar at 14, he played along to  Nirvana's " Nevermind ",

and wrote his first song soon after. In so

doing, he made himself unpopular with theschool housemaster, who knew that music

drifting down the corridor late at night

could invariably be traced to Blunt's room. His teen years were a battle between

teachers, who were intent on imposing

some sort of education, and himself,

equally intent on making music his career.

He went to California in September, 2003,

to record his album, and discovered that

being a slightly scruffy English boy in Los

Angeles could be very pleasant. Staying at

the home of an actress, he spent his daysrecording with Rothrock, and his

nights...well...researching LA's club scene.

"With my naïve background, it was likestepping into a devil's cauldron," he says,

in happy reminiscence. He recorded the

 painfully poignant track "Goodbye, My

Lover" in the actresses’ bathroom, general,a (“She was a frequenter of mental

hospitals freak – but pleasant”) and in

where she kept an old piano.

His current favourite listening is Cat

Power   and Lou Reed 's "Transformer"

album, and "Back to Bedlam" has asimilarly enigmatic quality. He won't

explain what most of the songs are about,

though he does admit that the deceptively bubbly "So Long, Jimmy" was inspired by

Messrs Hendrix  and Morrison. As for the

rest, he says only, "You can get away withmurder in a song".

A former British Army officer,singer/songwriter James Blunt is a

thoughtful performer with a knack for

crafting melodic contemporary soft rocktunes. Born in Tidworth, Wiltshire,

England in 1974 to a family with a long

military history, Blunt entered the army

after graduating from the Royal MilitaryAcademy Sandhurst. Ultimately achieving

the rank of captain, Blunt served with the

NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo andfinished out his time in the military as a

member of the Life Guard Regiment in the

British Household Cavalry. Having long

been interested in music, Blunt wasted notime in pursuing a pop career after leaving

the army. A subsequent performance at the

South by Southwest Festival in Austin,TX, brought Blunt to the attention of 4

 Non Blondes singer/producer Linda Perry,

who signed Blunt to her Custard Records

label. Released in 2005, Blunt's debutalbum, Back to Bedlam, was hugely

successful and featured the hit single

"You're Beautiful." Blunt toured for muchof 2005 and 2006 and released the two-

disc "odds and sods" live/documentary

album Chasing Time: The BedlamSessions in 2006. His sophomore effort is

scheduled to drop in 2007.

Keira Knightley

At the early age of 20,British actress Keira

Knightley is already a

movie star known all overthe world. Everyone who

has worked around this

young woman is in awe ofher classic talent and

 beauty, pretty much as

everyone who has seenher on screen. No wonder

why her career has been in

rising for the last fewyears and is still getting bigger. Yet her success is

not overnight. Daughter of

actor Will Knightley andactress turned playwright

Sharman MacDonald,

Keira has been trying toget in the business since

the tender age of three.

That was when she first

asked her parents to findan agent for her. They

didn’t take it seriously

coming from a baby, butthey couldn’t refuse a few

years later. She got her

first agent at age six as areward for overcoming

her dyslexia. Even today one of the qualities Keira admiresmore even of her actor idols is “perseverance”.

A year afterwards she landed her first role, on TV’s “RoyalCelebration”. The following year she did even better playing

Natasha Jordan in “A Village Affair”. She continued to do

small parts on TV movies and miniseries until her first breakthrough. That breakthrough didn’t truly put her name

in the spotlight but did land her in a major film for the first

time. It was a small part as Sabé the Queen's decoy in “StarWars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace”. She landed the

role for her resemblance to Natalie Portman; once in make

up not even their mothers could tell them apart. On the

movie promotion it was said Natalie played both parts not toruin any surprise, though. Yet still nowadays Keira loves

being compared to Natalie. After that she went on with TVmovies including “Princess of Thieves” and when she wassixteen she filmed “The Hole” making her first topless

scene.

That particular movie made her go through more roughtimes much like those when kids would laugh at her for not

reading well. She recalls, “A couple of the popular girls at

school said, quite loudly, 'She's in a crap movie, so it doesn'tcount.' It was rude and I was upset, but if you let that stuff

bother you, you're going to be in for a tough time. I wasn't

popular at school. I learned to let those comments wash overme. I toughened up quite quickly." She was quite right in not

listening, it was “The Hole” that got her into her real

 breakthrough: “Bend It Like Beckham”.

Originally a “very, very, very, very low budget film”, but it

turned out into a #1 box-office hit for several weeks in the

UK and even more surprisingly, did great in the USA too.Keira who had never imagined such success when filming it,

credits it to how it makes people smile and states soccer has

nothing to do with the core of the movie because it’s really

all about pursuing your dreams.

If Keira’s dream was to be a full time actress she’s certainlyliving it now. After “Beckham” she got into a heretic

schedule filming six movies in-between this and her big

Hollywood role, Elizabeth Swan on Disney’s Jerry

Bruckheimer movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse ofthe Black Pearl”. Even

1

Page 31: DAV Magazine Draft

before the release of“Pirates” and its

tremendous success,

producer Bruckheimer hadcast her for his

following movie “King

Arthur”. Knightley

excitedly recognizes,“You can't really get much

 bigger than a Jerry

Bruckheimer film.” Yesindeed, she got two. By

the time “Pirates” was

being released she alsohad out “Love Actually”,

with co-stars such as Huge

Grant. This settled hercelebrity status, but she

claims she isn’t totallyaware of it and its

madness. “I learned pretty early on never to read anythingwritten about you. I don't know most of it and that's the way

I like it kept."

Keira’s latest movies includes the thriller “The Jacket”, full

time action “Domino”, the classic “Pride and Prejudice” and

two sequels of “Pirates”, showing the multi-talents of this

lady, just as well as her great performances and recognitionfrom cast and crew members show she’s got a brilliant

career ahead.

Laughter Corner Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a

bottle of wine, they were exhausted and went to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.

"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."

"What does that tell you?" Holmes said Watson pondered for a minute.

"Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions

of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, I deduce that the

time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that the lord is all-

powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we

will have, a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, and then spoke. "Watson, you idiot, Some ------- hasstolen our tent."

 MEMORIES TO RECALL

The last day of my

college. I knew it was a

special event. Something

worth recording and

remembering the

memories. It was one of

those special events that

had marked the end of a

chapter and supposed to

start a new one. God

 knows what is yet to

happen, but

concentrating in the

present, all I can do is

meditate on what

happened and what did

not happened that should

have happened.

Time changes, thingschange that was what I

said to myself when I

woke up that morning.

In fact that was what I

was replying for the

whole week, because to

cope with a sudden

change in my life thatwas to be fired by a

day. I had met various

 people as strangers and

now they are so much

special for me. That it

grieves me to part with them. Though partition helps to

make love and friendship stronger.

Anyways, I woke that morning and tried to pull

up the best I had in me. Combed my hair, brushed my

shoes- in fact that was what I was doing for past two

weeks putting the best on me.

I wanted to spend the last few days with the people

who had become so special to me in the best possible

way. I talked to everyone around with whom I had never

talked too. I created a happier environment by making

jokes and fun all around. Though actually by nature I

am a solitude loving person but this time i enjoyed and

helped other enjoy.

So the time had come to say goodbye. I thought

the last day would pass normally but it really was

awful. There were first two periods; but the next classes

were off. So we started to sign on each other’s shirt as

we planned the previous day. It was fun. I was happy

till then. But after it was all over and everyone waswaiting to go home. I felt strange, I felt increasingly

strange as if my heart had stop functioning. I

experienced loneliness too after a gap of long period so

long that I had forgotten how it felt. It wasn’t a

tranquil sort of loneliness like of loneliness you feel while

watching the sunset, listening to river and wind rustling

among its leaves. No it wasn’t type of loneliness what I

feel was fear.I had been talking with my friends for granted time

till then but at that particular instance, I wished each

second were able to turn itself into a century. I was

having a terrible headache and was feeling very hungry.

Of course, they were just superficial complains. My

Page 34: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 34/45

real complain was of

loneliness which seemed

to drown me in it and of

which I could do nothing

coming to think of it.

 How I felt lonely even

when there were

People around to take

care of me. I felt

equally helpless against

those who commented on

the state of my mind, noticing my abrupt

change in mood towards

them I could do nothing,

but put a fake smile on

my face and lie that

nothing had happened .I

was lost in the face of

everyone who was in

front of me. Suddenly something fell down through my

cheeks I was unknown till one of my friend asked, “Are

you crying?” I was stunned yeah! I was not able to

control the falling of my tears I really wished that I

could cry loud and share the turmoil that was raging in

the depth of my heart. But how could I? I had never

done such thing before.

During the evening I thought and rethought and was in

conclusion that world isn’t a big place to live in cause

earth is round and so is our destiny. Nobody can tell

exactly that when we’ll meet again. I don’t think I have

anything to regret about joining this college. I now feelthat I now understood why I was bound to join this

college rather than any other one. Perhaps because fate

meant me to meet this new group of people who are

definitely a part of my heart, my memories and my life

and will exist till I will exist.

Yeah! College life was good and now its over . ABHA POUDYAL

MYST RY OF LIF

A man is never free. From birth till death he is bounded

in certain boundaries, which elongates in the lapse of

time.

I always wander around a small tea table in my room

wondering about my origin, my future, my past, my

destiny and myself. I can’t figure out myself, who am I?

What my purpose of being? What do I think each

moment? How those thoughts do came to my mind?

These questions have vague answers of me but those

thoughts of mine are totally independent from me.

Answers vary time-to-time depending upon the situation,

the period through which my life is moving. This is why I

think myself to be a versatile.

Not only me but every person in the world is versatile. I

might not sound wise at this point but the people who

often discuss or had thought of their own identity will

really understand me.I believe everything in this world is virtual. Something

happens suddenly, after sometimes it becomes a past,

which happened to be the future few moments ago.

Past, present and future - the game of time.

Time is really a mystery. You leave your past behind

which used to be your realism in your present which has

already became your past in this present that was

supposed to be your future but that supposed future will

be your present after a lapse and will be your past in

future.

You neither catch nor save the time. You can just spendyour time like we are doing from our birth. Your time flies

every second, you cannot just hold the moments, so, your

future and present is virtual but when your future and

present becomes your past then you can save it. If we

forget to live our present remembering bad obsession of

past then we will not have good memory to enjoy in

future. I remember my past to enjoy.

Every person has a side that we try to hide. A thing call

love exists in the world of hide and seeks, and it remains

immortal. We like people for their quality but love them

for their defects. -Demanding a capacity of mind makes me realize what I

really was.

-Stirring my life in the flood of laughter compels me to be

what I really am not.

-A thought of life has a sense of lie.

Past is the reality of the

life: it can never be

forgotten. it is part of

your life. Even if you try

you will be unsuccessful

till the end of your life

because it just

happened to be mixed

with your blood saved in

your brain and stamped

in your heart.

WHATEVER YOU ARE IS NOTHING BUT FOOD

According to eastern mystic tradition, all that you think you are is nothing butfood. Your body is food, your mind isfood, and your soul is food. Beyond thesoul there is certainly something, which

is not food. That something is ananta, not self. It is utter emptiness. Buddhacalls it shunya, the void. It is purespace. It contains nothing but itself; itis content less consciousness. While the content persists, the foodpersists. By ‘food’ is meant that which isingested from the outside. The bodyneeds physical food; without it, it willstart deteriorating. This is how itsurvives; it contains nothing but

physical food. Your mind contains memories, thoughts, desires, jealousies, powertrips, and a thousand and one things. All that is also food; on a more subtleplane it is food. Thought is food. Hence when you have nourishing thoughts your chest expands. When you havethoughts which give you energy you feelgood. Somebody compliments you – you are nourished. And somebody says

something uncomplimentary about you, and watches – it is as if somethinghas been snatched away from you.The mind is food in a subtle form. Themind is the inner side of the body;hence what you eat affects your mind… you can watch it yourself. Eatsomething and watch, eat somethingelse and watch. Keep notes, and you will become aware and surprised to findthat each things that you digest is not

only physical, it has a psychologicalpart to it. It makes your mind vulnerable to certain ideas, to certaindesires.Talk less, listen only to the essential, and be telegraphic in talking and

listening. If you talk less, if you listenless, slowly you will see that a feeling ofpurity will start rising within you. That becomes the necessary soil formeditation. Don’t go on reading all kind

of nonsense.Leave a few gaps in your mindunoccupied. Those moments ofunoccupied consciousness are the firstglimpse of meditation, the firstpenetration of the beyond, and the firstflashes of no-mind. And then if you canmanage to do this, the other thing is tochoose physical food which doesn’t helpaggression and violence, which is notpoisonous. Become bigger, become

huge. Why are you living in tunnels? Why are you creeping into small dark black holes? But you think you areliving in great ideological systems, because there are no great ideologicalsystems. No idea is great enough tocontain a human being; being-hoodcannot be contained by any concept. Allconcepts cripple and paralyzed. Your body is not poisonous as much as your mind is. The body is simple

phenomenon, it can be easily cleaned. If you change your poisonous foods you will be surprised; a new intelligence will be released in you. And this newintelligence will make it possible not togo on stuffing yourself with nonsense. This new intelligence will make youcapable of dropping the past and itsmemories, of dropping unnecessarydesires and dreams, dropping jealousies, anger, traumas and all kinds

of psychological wounds.

…. about me

Hi! This is Smit Keshari currentlyenrolled in BBA third semester, DAVCollege of Management. Actually I wanted to write an article for thecollege magazine’ The Contemporary’,however, I can’t think of any words inmy mind right now. This may happento every neophyte, isn’t it? Sometimes Ithought writing about my friends, sometimes about life and sometimesabout nature but realized that I lackideas for writing an essay so I decidedto write about a poem which would be‘short and sweet’. Nobody will feel boreto read it out but not a poem as well. Actually poem will be suitable as poem

contains a sense of feelings and touch. My life is like a poem, when I joinedDAV I knew no one. Those days were very difficult for me as I had joined thecollege 6 days later.“Dear readers, if you are feeling boredto death then you are not forced to goforward.”

Before joining DAV, I was studyingin Nepal Commerce Campus(Minbhawan) but later on I changed my

decision and joined DAV. My decisionturned out to be favorable as DAV issimply the best college in the valley andthe friends that I made here are justfantastic. Although I made a lot offriends during 1 semester but was closeto two particular friends as both ofthem were from out of valley. Thereason for our friendship is that I amalso from out of valley. The creation ofour friendship was the most memorable

moments of my life. There are manypeople and accordingly many ways offriendship but I wonder why myfriendship did grew with “Sanjit” and”Sanjeev”. It is really a great thing forme. I always wish for myself that I willalways have such days and friends inmy life. Thank You DAV for this.

 SPIRITU L TRUTH

•  Go not to the temple to put flowers upon the feet of God,

First fill your own house with the fragrance of love.

o  Go not to the temple to light candles before the altar God,

First remove the darkness of sin from your heart.

o  Go not to the temple to bow down your head in prayers,

First learn to bow in humility before your fellowmen.

o  Go not to the temple to pray on bended knees,

First bend down to lift someone who’s downtrodden

o  Go not to the temple to ask for forgiveness for your sins,

First forgive from your heart those who have

Sinned against you.

Your Glimpse

Just a glimpse was that,

Struck like an arrow to my heart,

I nursed my wound,

With the petals of thy love-rose.

The Epoch of Global Warming

The world’s weather has become whimsical! Something weird ishappening out here. Ski slopes incentral Japan and Alps were still green weeks after the start of the season.Giant hornets once found only in thefar-east are now swarming in warmerFrance. In the Australian outback the worst drought in record is driving wildcamels crazy with thirst. The globalthermostat is malfunctioning! Thetemperature is gradually increasing andthe globe is getting warmer after every

sunset. This past year was the hotteston record. The deceptively normalaverage temperature masked record- breaking highs in summer and record- breaking lows in winter.

Who are responsible for these things? Its humans! We may be the smartest of

all animals, endowed withexponentially greater powers of insightand abstraction, but we are animals thesame. That means that we can also beshortsighted and brutish, hungry forfood, resources, land and oblivious ofthe mess we leave behind trying to getthem.

The consequences of the global warming are familiar to most of us. Forinstance, the islands shrink as the waves reach farther inland; walls andchannels along the rivers prevent siltfrom replenishing marshy areas; biggerstorms make the world’s floodplainseven more vulnerable and many more. The latest peril that the global warmingmay ignite is the “WARS FOR WATER”.Rising temperature is creating havoc with earth’s weather, bringing too much

rain to some, not enough to others. Vicious battles will erupt between water-rich and water-poor nations, particularly in major river basins wherethe upstream nations control the flowof water to those of downstream. Thelogic goes like this: Indus and Ganges-Brahamaputra systems are shared by

India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladeshigniting bruising fights over everdiminishing supplies.

Providentially, the situation is notsadistic and under control as manyregions of the world are in for more, notless, precipitation in the years ahead.

Page 41: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 41/45

However, if the vogue for the global warming rises then these wars becomeinevitable. Envisage the worldthereafter. Envisage the worldskirmishing for that thing that occupies

70% of the earth’s territory.

So, how do we check the problem? If weact on individual level, the solution isnot that hard. We can considerablyreduce the global warming and itseffects by being little conscious about what we do in our daily life. Take thefollowing ten tips and implement them. You will be contributing to make ourplanet a better livable place forgenerations to come.

1.  Reduce, Reuse, RecycleDo your part to reduce waste bychoosing reusable products insteadof disposables. Buying products with minimal packaging (includingthe economy size when that makessense for you) will help to reduce waste. By recycling half of yourhousehold waste, you can save2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide

annually.

2.  Use Less Heat and Air conditioning Adding insulation to your walls andattic, and installing weatherstripping or caulking around doorsand windows can lower your heatingcosts more than 25 percent, byreducing the amount of energy youneed to heat and cool your home.Turn down the heat while you’re

sleeping at night or away during theday, and keep temperaturesmoderate at all times. Setting yourthermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer couldsave about 2,000 pounds of carbondioxide each year.

3.  Change a Light bulb Wherever practical, replace regularlight bulbs with compact fluorescentlight (CFL) bulbs. CFLs last 10 timeslonger than incandescent bulbs, use

two-thirds less energy, and give off70 percent less heat.

4.  Drive Less and Drive SmartLess driving means fewer emissions.Besides saving gasoline, walkingand biking are great forms ofexercise. Explore your community’smass transit system, and check outoptions for bike/car pooling to workor school. When you do drive, make sure yourcar is running efficiently. Forexample, keeping your tiresproperly inflated can improve yourgas mileage by more than 3 percent.Every gallon of gas you save notonly helps your budget, it also keeps20 pounds of carbon dioxide out ofthe atmosphere.

5.  Buy Energy Efficient Products When it's time to buy a new car,

choose one that offers good gasmileage. Home appliances nowcome in a range of energy-efficientmodels, and compact florescent bulbs are designed to provide morenatural-looking light while using farless energy than standard light bulbs. Avoid products that come withexcess packaging, especially moldedplastic and other packaging that

can't be recycled. If you reduce yourhousehold garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds ofcarbon dioxide annually.

6.  Use Less Hot WaterSet your water heater at 120 degreesto save energy, and wrap it in an

Page 42: DAV Magazine Draft

8/12/2019 DAV Magazine Draft

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/dav-magazine-draft 42/45

insulating blanket if it is more than5 years old. Buy low-flowshowerheads to save hot water andabout 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm

or cold water to reduce your use ofhot water and the energy required toproduce it. That change alone cansave at least 500 pounds of carbondioxide annually in mosthouseholds.

7.  Use the “Off” SwitchSave electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only asmuch light as you need. Andremember to turn off yourtelevision, video player, stereo andcomputer when you're not usingthem.

8.  Plant a TreeIf you have the means to plant atree, start digging. Duringphotosynthesis, trees and otherplants absorb carbon dioxide andgive off oxygen. A single tree will

absorb approximately one ton ofcarbon dioxide during its lifetime.

9.  Get a Report Card From Your UtilityCompanyMany utility companies provide freehome energy audits to helpconsumers identify areas in theirhomes that may not be energyefficient. In addition, many utilitycompanies offer rebate programs to

help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades.

10. Encourage Others to ConserveShare information about recyclingand energy conservation with yourfriends, neighbors and co-workers,and take opportunities to encourage

public officials to establishprograms and policies that are goodfor the environment.

These 10 steps will take you a long

way toward reducing your energyuse and your monthly budget. Andless energy use means lessdependence on the fossil fuels thatcreate greenhouse gases andcontribute to global warming

And finally envisage the amount ofculpability that we may carry by saying“we could have vetoed it”. So let’s acttogether. Let us live and let creatureslive in concord.

Save the home!Save the world!Save our mother!

That Face in My Memory!

That face in my memory,

Appears so frequently,

Enticing with its sweet innocence,

Flushing with the glory of romance,

Oh, that face in my memory!

Wakes me up in the mid-night,

Evokes the days gone by,

So much love in it,

So much care in it,

Oh, that face in my memory!

Asks me questions of innocence,

Wish I knew all her answers,

Longs for me all the time,

Wish I was there for her every time,

So much beauty in it,

Oh, that face in my memory!

Tears rolling over the chicks,

Eyes so wide open,

Rivers of love flowing so smoothly,

Wish I could bathe in it,

Oh, that sweet face in my memory! By

has come for you to start

working on your resume.Where writing a resume is

concerned, most people

don’t know where to start,

what to include and what

to avoid. The corporate

world is a scary one but

one where everyone wants

to etch their names as

they climb the corporate

ladder. For this they need

a resume that will getthem noticed!

Understanding the

purpose of writing a

resume

Lets start by

understanding what a

resume or a CV is. Your

resume is a document

that helps you market

your skills and highlights

your achievements in the

professional or corporate

world. It is a tool that

helps you communicate

your objectives and your

value to a prospective

employer or company. A

good resume has a proper

structure and looks well

planned. Haphazardly

made resumes look

sloppy and are not going

to impress any one.

ome resume writing tips

Here are some tips that

will help you make your

process of writing a

resume a little simpler.

Though this article is not a

resume or CV writing

guide, it will help you

understand resumes andresume writing a little

better.

* Before you start

writing your resume, you

need to be sure of your

objective. Once your

objective is clear you can

write a resume that is

focused and complete.

* Make your resumeyour marketing tool. You

need to market yourself in

the corporate world, and

the best way to do so is

with a resume.

* Remember that your

resume or CV will only get

you an interview and

cannot be relied upon to

get you the job. People

with the best resumes

often do not get the best

 jobs because they haven’t

nailed the art of interview

giving, which is what will

get you the job.

* Whilst writing a CV or

resume, the formatting is

important. Your resume

needs to be created in

such a manner that it

catches the reader’s

attention instantly. Its

advisable to use bulleted

sentences as this makes iteasier to scan the resume.

Also use action words that

will add strength to your

resume. Using symbols

and numbers makes the

resume stand out as well.

* Time is a constraint in

everyone’s life. Keep this

in mind while writing your

resume and play up your

strengths and include yourachievements in the first

half of your resume.

Interviewers breeze

through resumes and the

strongest resume will pop

for them. And this is what

you need to do to make

your resume pop for them.

* Do some research

before writing your

resume. Search forkeywords and buzzwords

most searched in ads and

include those in your

resume.

* Make sure that your

resume focuses on the

positive aspects of your

professional life. If you

feel some information will

put you at a disadvantage,

then leave it out!

* Decide on the format

of your resume keeping in

mind certain factors like

education and work

experience. You can

choose from reverse

chronological format

resume, functional format

resume and combination

format resume.

* Proofread, proofread

and proofread! A resume

with spelling errors or

grammatical errors is a

major put off and will be

added to the paper

shredder within seconds.

Ask a friend or family

member to go through

your resume, as they will

be more useful and better

critics of your resume than

you would.

At the end of it all, keep

your resume simple and

precise. Avoid anything

fancy including the paper

and watch how your

resume gets noticed.

Who Is The Father

A very elderly couple is having an elegant dinner to celebrate their 75th wedding

anniversary. The old man leans forward and says softly to his wife, "Dear, there issomething that I must ask you. It has always bothered me that our tenth child never

quite looked like the rest of our children. Now I want to assure you that these 75 years

have been the most wonderful experience I could have ever hoped for, and your answer

cannot take that all that away. But, I must know, did he have a different father?"

The wife drops her head, unable to look her husband in the eye, she paused for moment

and then confessed. "Yes. Yes he did."

The old man is very shaken, the reality of what his wife was admitting hit him harder

than he had expected. With a tear in his eye he asks, "Who? Who was he? Who was thefather?"

Again, the old woman drops her head, saying nothing at first as she tried to muster the

courage to tell the truth to her husband. Then, finally, she says: "You."
