At just 19, YouTube star Victoria Preston has entered the top 10 charts with her latest single “hazy days” and is set to become one of the UK’s biggest artists. Harmony interviewed Victoria to find out her story of how she went from being a first year university student, receiving up to 100 likes on her covers, to publishing her own creations and attracting almost one million subscribers. Victoria was first known of under the YouTube channel name ‘In Another Life’, covering songs by artists such as passenger, imagine dragons and Bombay bicycle club… your cliché indie pop bands. Victoria appeared to be your typical ‘wanna be’ young, indie pop star with a YouTube channel which created “a quiet place” where she could “get away from the everyday” and be whoever she wanted. But, it wasn’t until she turned ‘Kathleen’, a top track by the new and upcoming band Catfish and the Bottlemen, into an acoustic melody that we really saw her talent rocket. This cover was released on the 12 th of December 2014 and within the first day the likes and views slowly grew from faithful, longstanding subscribers. The video didn’t reach its peak until, unknowingly to Victoria, the famous band spotted a link to the video in a mention of theirs on famous social media site twitter, to which they sent out their re-tweet with the comment “you heard it here first”. When we spoke to Victoria she said, “the views grew from 200 to 20,000 in a blink. I went from getting the occasional like or comment to my phone crashing from all of the mentions and new followers on my social media”. Victoria went on to tell us how she was unaware of what had created the manic upsurge of audience numbers until she later received a text from a friend with a screenshot of the band’s tweet and the simple comment “omg.”. From here Victoria’s confidence grew, alongside her new love of turning indie rock songs into her own mellow acoustics. Her videos began to receive an average of 10,000 views with larger audience numbers and a new found twitter alliance with Catfish and the Bottlemen who clearly saw potential in this young musician. We asked Victoria if this new audience created pressure for her to provide more regular videos or publish something different to support the variety of viewers. “I thought, at first, that after the hype with Catfish people would start to dislike what I was creating and maybe unsubscribe or leave unappreciative comments but it wasn’t like that at all. If anything people were more supportive and putting in requests!” The content published on Victoria’s channel stayed faithfully the same but the shy, reserved girl we had before seen seemed to have a totally different outlook to her videos. New introductions gave her the ability to shamelessly publish her voice with much more confidence, covers of older, more unusual songs started to appear and we finally began to see her leading the other life she had anticipated. Not only

Victoria went on to tell us how she was unaware of what had created the manic upsurge of audience numbers until she later received a text from a friend with a screenshot of the bands tweet and the simple comment omg.. From here Victorias confidence grew, alongside her new love of turning indie rock songs into her own mellow acoustics. I thought, at first, that after the hype with Catfish people would start to dislike what I was creating and maybe unsubscribe or leave unappreciative comments but it wasnt like that at all. If anything people were more supportive and putting in requests! The content published on Victorias channel stayed faithfully the same but the shy, reserved girl we had before seen seemed to have a totally different outlook to her videos. New introductions gave her the ability to shamelessly publish her voice with much more confidence, covers of older, more unusual songs started to appear and we finally began to see her leading the other life she had anticipated. Not only was Victorias channel more significant within the YouTube community but she was even recognised at work in a local fashion retail store. One young girl came up to me and asked if she could take a picture with me. I had no idea who she was or why she wanted my picture until she said she loved watching my videos. It was still totally bizarre and took me by complete surprise so I certainly dont think I was the glamorous musician she was expecting but it was a good feeling nonetheless. Shortly after this event Victoria was invited to perform at a winter ball with other upcoming artists; All of the artists were really nice but they seemed a lot more serious about the whole thing than myselfmost of them had agents with scheduled future gigs as well as at least one of their own songs to perform if not more!. Although embarrassed to sing alongside the other performers Victorias act received the most praise from the audience who looked pleased to eventually hear a song they knew the words to. However, we wonder if this was the moment that encouraged Victoria to finally release her own material for her fans to admire. At the start of January 2015 Victoria published her first single hazy days which received a great recommendation from her own influential band Catfish and the Bottlemen. We questioned Victoria to why she hadnt released her own material before, and she admitted that the song was an old construction that she had debated publishing over and over but shed never had the courage to share something or her own. I can take the dislikes on a cover but not on my own lyrics Victoria told us. However we soon saw that Victorias doubts were unnecessary as the video received 12,389 thumbs up in the first 48 hours and within the next fortnight the song was put onto iTunes for download at the overwhelming request of fans. The song was first seen in the charts on the 11th of January when this young singer was identified as a breakthrough artist, as her song hit position 37. From here the song climbed its way through the charts, passing rival artists such as clean bandit and George Ezra until it reached position 9 on the 18th January 2015. Victoria said she was overwhelmed at how the song had taken off since that first hectic day and she was barely starting to believe just how many people had heard her sing, let alone the desires for her to release it for download. When asked about what she is going to do with the money her song made Victoria laughed, Well, Im certainly not going to spend it on a trip to Vegas or to buy huge house with a swimming pool as you might expect. I thought about putting it into creating a video to go with the song or for a posh studio to record new material in butthats not why people subscribed to my channel and definitely not why Catfish and the Bottlemen shared it. For now I think Ill save it for a better cause. We asked Victoria what was next for her, would she be continuing with her course at university or heading out to compete in the manic music industry. She told us although music is what I love to do, the past couple of months have been has been crazy for me so I think Im going to stick to university for now and after thatwho knows. Maybe Ill get to experience that other life [laughs]. Its clear that Victoria is a very talented artist but maybe she is too young to take on this adventure just yet, whatever happens next we sure arent going to underestimate her as there are definitely some more top 10 hits to be seen from In Another Life.
