London is the first city to host the Olympics for a third time.
They hosted the Olympics in 1908 and 1948.
The 2012 Olympics were held in London from 25 July 2012 to 12 August 2012.
On 6 July 2005 London was chosen to host the 2012 Olympic - beating Moscow, Madrid, New York and its big rival Paris.
Prime Minister Tony Blair called the win “a momentous day” for Britain.
The London Olympic stadium is the lightest stadium ever built. Not just that, but they also used 2,500 tons of steel tubing that was recycled from old gas pipelines. That's a pretty green stadium!
In April 2012 the Torch was recognised as the Design of the Year at an awards ceremony hosted by the Design Museum.
The Torch was made up of aluminium skin, perforated by 8,000 circles which represent the 8,000 torchbeares who carried the Olympic Flame.
A grid of lines symbolises drawing together and outreach, and the River Thames symbolises London.
The obverse side of the medal depicts Nike, The Greek Goddess of Victory, stepping out from the Panathenaic stadium in Athens to arrive in the host city.
10,500 athletes participated in 302 events in 26 sports. Bahrain, Botswana,Cyprus, Gabon, Grenada, Guatemala and Montenegro each won their first Olympic medal ever.

Wenlock was named after the town of Much Wenlock. Tthe Wenlock Games, founded around the mid 19th Century acted as a catalyst to the modern Olympic Games.
Mandeville is named after the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where in the 1940s, Dr Ludwig Guttmann established the Stoke Mandeville games at his Spinal unit at the hospital. The foundations were laid for the modern Paralympic games.
With one month to go to the opening ceremony, these spectacular rings were suspended from Tower Bridge. The rings, which weighed three tonnes, had cost £259,817 to produce. The Yorkshire-made rings were attached to a modular aluminium grid. Together they weighed about 13 tonnes!
“Slumdog millionaire” filmmaker Danny Boyle was appointed as the artistic director of the opening ceremony . The event featured a diverse cast including Daniel Craig, David Beckham, Mr. Bean and JK Rowling.
The show opened with a recreation of rural Britain in the early 19th century. Sheep, cows, geese, goats, chickens, ducks and horses added a surreal touch to the Britain of Wind in the Willows. Choirboys sang the “national anthem” of each of our four countries.
Then came the chaos of the world's first industrial society. Smoking chimneys rose up to tower over the stage. Workers forged an Olympic ring. From the stadium’s roof came four more rings to join it, which united in mid-air to form the Olympic rings.
This was followed by the film of Daniel Craig's James Bond meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace. The pair's body doubles parachuted into the stadium. Moments later the Queen herself took her place in the Royal Box.
Boyle's personal tribute to the National Health Service followed. Children bounced on beds in their pyjamas. A little boy read Peter Pan by torchlight under the covers.
A central theme of the Opening Ceremony was Britain's contribution to modern pop. The Beatles enjoyed pride of place. The ceremony culminated with Paul McCartney singing Hey Jude, one of the Beatles's greatest hits.
It was the first Olympics where every country had at least 1 female athlete. Also, Female Boxing was included in 2012, so, every sport in the games had male and female competitors.

The Russian Olympic Committee sent a total of 436 athletes to the Games to compete in 24 sports. For the first time in its Olympic history, Russia was represented by more female than male athletes. Russia left London with a total of 82 medals (24 gold, 26 silver, and 32 bronze), finishing fourth in the overall medal standings. Russian athletes dominated in rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized swimming, where they each won gold medals in all sporting events.
