WHEN MARK fULLBROOK BID ON A SAINT LUCIAN VILLA
HOLIDAY AT A CHARITY SILENT AUCTION IN 2009, THERE
MUST HAVE BEEN A LITTLE SERENDIPITY IN THE AIR.
When he and wife Lorraine won the two-week
stay at Saline Reef, it started their passionate love
affair with the island and the property. The couple,
from England, were instantly besotted with the
cliffside home, its awe-inspiring views over the north
coast of Cap Estate all the way to Martinique, the
spaciousness of the house and its gently sloping, very
private location.
Two years later the fullbrooks were back in Saint
Lucia and looking to buy a property, but despite
working with local realtors, they were drawn back
to Saline Reef, where they peered through the fence
and wished that their dream home were on the
market.
“The one thing we were insistent on was that we
were looking for a location to live up to Saline Reef,’’
Mark said. “What we really fell in love with were the
incredible views from morning to sunset; every area
of the home has its own spectacular panorama, so
we were determined to find the right property with
Saline Reef as our point of reference.”
Ultimately, what they really wanted to do was
purchase Saline Reef, and it became a bit of an
obsession. The fullbrooks (who have been married
for 26 years) met specialised realtor, Tropical Villas,
and explained how much they wanted to buy the
property. Their patience was rewarded when the
owner decided to sell, at which point, Mark put a
covert plan into play, spending five months in secret
negotiations, and just before Lorraine’s birthday,
he surprised her with the gift of her dreams—the
singularly wonderful Saline Reef.
That was 18 months ago, and the start of a
renovation project that would allow Lorraine to
exercise her interior design skills and go to work on
achieving the vision that Saline Reef had inspired
since their first visit. The result is a an impressive
fusion of old Caribbean charm with modern beach
house, set in a quiet and exquisitely private garden,

its exterior all white gingerbread, lattice-work and
seafoam green panelling, while inside, a luxurious,
light and airy family home welcomes every visitor and
is never pretentious.
Lorraine is humble about her design expertise,
calling it more of a hobby. But she spent many
months wandering around the property looking at
every angle and deciding what changes to make,
before getting the right team together to execute the
final vision. The transformation required the skills of a
great architect and project manager, Jean Mederick,
and a high-quality, reliable builder, George Elisée.
With Lorraine’s guiding hand on every detail from
paint colours and sun loungers to bespoke furniture
makers in London and Saint Lucia, the road was
long and sometimes stressful, but the result was well
worth the effort.
The rebirth of Saline Reef took it from an old-
fashioned, mid-20th century wooden house with
dark-stained hatching, rainbow-painted balusters,
a proliferation of lattice and tropical décor theme,
complete with pink parrots, to a serene and
embracing getaway, where the inside and outside
spaces blend seamlessly into a secluded, calm retreat.

Arriving at the unobtrusive rear of the villa, and
entering via beloved housekeeper Angel’s bijou but
practical kitchen and dining nook, you are greeted
by sunlight and blue sky pouring through the four
sets of french doors and cathedral-height windows
of the lower ground floor living room. The eye is
immediately drawn to the view of Pigeon Island, and
the outdoor living space beckons irresistibly.
To the right of the L-shaped layout, a jalousie
shutter-lined corridor accesses the master and
guest bedroom. Overlooking the pool terrace, you
are enticed outside by the insane views and balmy
breezes.
Lorraine fullbrook’s desire to make outdoor living
the heart of Saline Reef’s redesign has paid off in
spades, and the house offers access to its many
exterior nooks and crannies at every opportunity.
Outside on the pool deck, the afternoon sun plays
beautiful tricks with geometric shadows thrown from
the terrace pergola and open jalousie shutters. Around
the two-level rounded pool, a pale cream stone deck
is home to stylish and comfortable loungers, and a
tiny balcony off the second guest bedroom is the
perfect reading spot. The garden envelops the pool,
providing welcome shade with rustling palms and
blazing bougainvillea, and tall pots line the terrace
with more palms and bushy ficus trees.
If the Caribbean lifestyle means outdoor living,
Saline Reef offers seemingly endless possibilities for
capturing the 180-degree mountain and ocean vistas:
the Crow’s Nest is a two-storey cliff-edge gazebo
overlooking the teal crystal sea and crashing surf,
just big enough for two comfortable armchairs—
Mark’s favourite spot for a morning emailing session.
The entire outdoor area is covered by wifi, making
it “the best place in the world to do a little work!”
Tucked away in the garden overlooking the sea is
a cosy dining deck, ideal for watching the lights of
Martinique at dusk, and through the french doors
of the lounge is a spacious terrace with comfortable
seating and a large dining table with views over the
Cliffside Cap Maison resort and Rodney Bay twinkling
in the distance.

And if you must go inside, Saline Reef’s large
comfortable lounge is wired for all mod cons, and
furnished in a modern beach house style complete
with custom-made oversized sofas, sleek white
cabinetry and an eight-foot locally built bookcase
designed by Lorraine. Each bedroom is a cool, relaxing
retreat, luxuriant in neutral tones of white and beige,
accented with rich, textural fabrics, and furnished
with top- of-the-line beds and bedding from The
White Company in London. All are en suite with walk-
in closets, and the master has a private balcony with
a bird’s eye view all the way to Mount Pimard, and
access to the upper Crow’s Nest—another example of
the indoor-outdoor flow Lorraine has so successfully
achieved.
The restoration of the villa was not only cosmetic,
and Mark reels off an impressive list of upgrades
from foundations to electrics, roofing and hurricane
proofing and a pool renovation, all of which the
couple considers a vital investment in the future of
the home, as well as the comfort and safety of all its
guests.
And what of the James Bond movie poster collection
hanging in pride of place along the first-floor gallery?
Mark joked: “We just love James Bond and wanted
a theme. Lorraine happens to think Daniel Craig is the
bee’s knees and the best Bond ever. I keep pointing
out he has big ears.’’ One of the Skyfall posters
is positioned so Lorraine can see him in his tuxedo
through the open shutter while she floats in the
pool. “Ian fleming wrote his books overlooking the
Caribbean. He clearly never found Saint Lucia and had
to settle for Jamaica. We reckon Saline Reef’s view
beats his villa, Goldeneye, hands down.”
Lorraine and Mark are proud of all they have
achieved as first-time renovators, and feel very
passionate about the villa’s special-ness. Saline Reef,
though architecturally outstanding, is a home and not
a showcase.
Mark put it this way: “We haven’t bought a rental
property to rent, we’ve bought a family home which
we want to share with other people. Saline Reef really
soothes the soul.”M
