Machin Messenger Serving Minnitaki, Eagle River, Vermilion Bay And surrounding area Volume 20 issue 4 April 5, 2018 Im quite sure that everyone is happy that winter is behind us. Not only was it a long one with frigid tem- peratures, but the illness that has touched just about every household and workplace has been brutal. I know of few people who escaped winter without being ill at some point. But that s behind us. The sun and the warming temperatures will let us open windows, get outside and breathe some fresh air. While I don t mind winter in general, some winters are a little like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer - it sure feels good when it stops. So, for some good news. After much work, we have received a grant to rebuild Townline Road to the tune of a little over a million dollars. The Minister of Municipal Affairs Bill Mauro out of Thunder Bay called me personally to congratulate me on our successful application. The work on Townline Road should begin this summer. After applying for grant after grant for these types of projects, it sure is nice to be successful in obtaining one. While the grant application is the official paper work, much of the success of getting these projects done is through meeting face to face with the people that pull the big strings. I have met informally and often by chance with Minister Mauro and brought up specific issues like Townline Road and how we needed to be at the head of the queue for funding. I happened to be on the same plane out of Thunder Bay this last year where I brought up this point. Councilors Ruete and Kujansuu and I have had more formally meetings with Ministers Gravelle and Chiarelli that touched on our infrastructure needs. Councilor Griffiths has also plead- ed our case from the forestry end of things and Councilor Anderson along with the rest of council has pressed the provincial and federal governments to live up to promises. Id also like to say that our small staff also does much of the grunt work to make these successes happen. The work is starting to pay off and we are getting some real investment in our community. One valid question is why choose Townline Road? Dont all or most of our roads need serious work? My answer to that is yes, most of our roads need serious work. Airport Rd, Primrose, North and South Minnitaki come to mind right off the bat. So do many of our bridges and other infrastructure. But you cant, at least not successfully, apply for grants for all roads and infrastructure. You need to pick one and one that fits the grant application guidelines. Townline Road fits this grant, so we now move on to the next road, or equip- ment upgrade or other opportunity that best fits our needs. Its a constant process of looking for money for a specific need, getting the funding, fixing the problem, and then moving on to the next need. Id like to thank Kurt Schmidt, who is stepping down from the interim fire chief position on April first. He stepped into help us bridge the gap between fire chiefs and will be missed, although he is staying on with the fire service. We will be looking for someone to fill the position. I would be remiss if, in light of some upheaval in our neighboring communitys fire service of late, I didnt thank our fire fighters . We appreciate your work! If you are not part of the service and would be interested in joining in to help out people when they need it most, please contact a member of our fire service or the municipal office and we will get you the information you need. There will be some employment needs within the Municipality coming up. If you are looking for work or want a change in careers, keep an eye out for job postings in the Messenger, Machin website, face book, Dryden Observer, as well as the Co-op and Post Office bulletin boards. I guess that is about it for now. I hope you have a great April and enjoy your own way of welcoming spring in the best place in the world to live. Sincerely, Drew Myers Mayor of Machin

Volume 20 issue 4 April 5, 2018

I’m quite sure that everyone is happy that winter is behind us. Not only was it a long one with frigid tem-peratures, but the illness that has touched just about every household and workplace has been brutal. I know of few people who escaped winter without being ill at some point. But that’s behind us. The sun and the warming temperatures will let us open windows, get outside and breathe some fresh air. While I don’t mind winter in general, some winters are a little like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer - it sure feels good when it stops.
