latter has the bigger scores to drop… Waiting in the wings for any slip-ups from the title leaders is Graeme Davis, the longtime campaigner who scored his first National victory last time out at Oulton Park, 30 years after his first race in the category! Regular finishes in the top-six have elevated Kieren McDonald and Leon Wightman to outside bet contenders, and Wightman was the man on a charge last time out with a tigering drive from mid-pack to second behind Davis.

Of the rest, fast Welsh youngster Ashley Davies has been unlucky not to take more than just a single win at Brands Hatch back in May,

while in the milder-tuned S-Class, honours have swung back and forth between leading novice, Shaun Tarlton, and seasoned campaigner, Ian Deviny.

Last time here, for the opening round of 2013, the race was a head-to-head between Paul Spark and Max Hunter, which Spark won, and he could well be a factor if he enters, having only raced at Thruxton this season. Either way, predicting the outcome of both races is as difficult as always… that’s the beauty of Mini Se7en, there is never really a dead cert, which is why it has remained such an enduring formula for half a century!

MINI MIGLIA

If the Mini Se7en title chase is close, then the competition among the bigger-engined

1.3-litre siblings is even tighter! Having won both Oulton races last time out and taken his winning tally to four for the season, Rupert Deeth has sneaked ahead by six points from previous leader Kane Astin who has three victories.

Twice winner Dan Wheeler is just three points behind Astin but has an exclusion counting against him after a collision at Oulton with the other race winner this season, Aaron Smith, although that exclusion may be subject to an MSA inquiry…

Sitting just behind the leading trio, on points, and as they have done on-track for much of this season are Colin Peacock, Tony Le May and Rob Howard, and any of these three are potential race winners at Donington. Howard’s form has dramatically improved thanks to the preparation input of 2011 Champion, Endaf Owens, while others who could mount a podium challenge include James Coulson and Dave Drew.

With two races at 10 laps apiece expect to see some dramatic,

nose-to-tail slipstreaming down the straights and then even closer door handle-to-door handle battles through the corners; a wiggling train of Miglias down through the Craner Curves is a sight to behold, either in the dry or wet. Not to be missed!

INVITATION ClassA separate non-points category for Invitation Minis may run on either the same grid as the Mini Miglias or Mini Se7ens, and allows for a variety of A-Series engined Mini contenders from other motorsport disciplines. Several regular contenders have come along and picked up silverware, so look out for cars numbered #100-#149…

INvITATION CLASS ReCORdS & ReguLATIONS

Note: Invitation class numbered from #100 - #149, non-points scoring but trophy to class winner (if three starters or more).

Note: Invitation class intended to start on the Mini Mi-glia grid.

Note: The M7RC holds its own award ceremony in the paddock after the races – this is in addition to any post-race podium presentation by the circuit/meeting organisers…

Sad news reached the M7RC recently of the passing of Brian Jones at the age of 67. Very much a dedicated racing enthusiast and proud longtime M7RC supporter, Brian competed in several Mini Miglia races in the late 1980s and early 1990s, his best result being an eighth place at Silverstone in the 1987 Southern Mini Miglia Series. Brian’s self-built ‘Jones Mini’ - also known as ‘Gumdrop’ - always carried #17 and was invariably powered by a Manx-tuned engine, as were many of the other Miglia racers that Brian either helped build or run on a regular basis, including those of Peter Allen, Dave and Trevor Hancock, Alan Whittington, Owen Hall and Mike Fry. After he finished racing in 1992, Brian and his son Robin built an early 90’s-spec 1000cc Miglia which they used to take out for a bit of fun on-track over the last few years. Brian’s funeral took place at Oxford Crematorium in early June, and to Brian’s family and friends, the M7RC wishes to pass on its deepest sympathies for their sad loss.

MINI SE7ENS: RACE 1

Championship leader Andrew Deviny qualified

on pole for the first race at Oulton Park with Graeme Davis second Darren Thomas third and with Shaun Talton leading the S class in sixth and Ian Deviny second in Class in eighth.

A great start for all the Minis saw them keep their positions into the first corner. The top five of Deviny, Davis, Thomas, Ashley Davies and Gareth Hunt made a break for it leaving Kieren McDonald to lead the following pack.

Lap two saw Davis and Thomas battle for second into the Island Hill bends, as they reappeared at Hill tops Davis still had his place. Meanwhile Davies slid onto the grass also at Hilltops allowing Hunt to take fourth. Leon Wightman also performed a brave move here and took sixth place from

Tarlton.On lap four a lock-up for

Davis gave Thomas a chance to get alongside him but Thomas couldn’t make it stick. Davis also had a very sideways moment at Knickerbrook Corner provoking some fantastic driving from Thomas and Davies to avoid him. Davies used the confusion to try and get past Thomas but was fended off. Elsewhere Steve Trench had a problem and pulled off.

Further back there was a great battle between Ian Deviny and Tarlton for seventh and eighth but Deviny kept the place.

Islands straight in lap five saw problems also for Davies who also pulled off giving Hunt fourth. Up front A Deviny is still leading but the others won’t let him get away.

Lap six and Davis and Thomas were nose-to-tail for

second which Thomas took into the Cascades, this is also where Deviny had a hairy moment getting a wheel in the gravel but great driving gets him out and still in front.Wightman was also having a great race up to fifth from ninth on the grid, also Julian Proctor now 10th from 13th.

Lots of trying but no passing was the story of the last lap with Deviny taking the win and the fastest lap. Thomas was second, Davis third, Hunt fourth, Wightman fifth. In the S Class Tarlton took the win with I Deviny in second.

MINI MIGLIAS: RACE 1

Oulton Park saw Rupert Deeth on pole again with

Colin Peacock, Dan Wheeler, Kane Astin and James Coulson behind for the first 20 min race.

A great start from Astin taking second with Wheeler coming alongside and taking it away from Astin. Aaron Smith also had a fantastic start getting to fifth from 10th.

Astin tried to retake second into the Island Bends while Wheeler attacked for the lead but neither could make it stick.

The leading train of Deeth, Wheeler, Astin, Peacock, Smith and Dave Drew all broke away from the pack.

The top three were nose-to-tail crossing the line to start lap 2 with Wheeler making a charge up the inside but great defending from Deeth shut him out. Astin took second round the outside at Cascades but ends up on the grass to fall back to third. Smith also takes

fourth from Peacock and is looking at third which he gets, pushing Astin into fourth.

A spin from Drew into Hislops sees him retire.

Deeth is still leading into the third lap. A great move from Astin saw him retake third from Smith and chasing down the leading pair. Michael Green was also having a great race driving up the side of Mark Cowan to take eighth, and Rob Howard was chasing Tony Le-May for sixth. Lap four also saw Coulson retire.

A big move by Wheeler on the start/finish straight from way back started lap five, but great defending from Deeth makes him pull back into second. Smith also tried a move but it all goes wrong with him and Wheeler ending up in the tyre wall and out of the race.

This sees the safety car out bunching all the cars up with Astin leading, then Deeth, Peacock, Howard, Le-May,

Green, Phil Harvey, Gary Warburton, Paul Simmonds and Sam Summerhayes. Into Lakeside straight Astin pulls off giving Deeth the lead again.

Deeth gets off to a great restart when the safety car pulls in. Le-May tries for third but Howard shuts the door. Deeth and Peacock pull away with Howard catching. A slight mistake from Deeth sees his wheels on the grass, but he manages to keep the lead. Howard is attacking for second which Peacock repels. A late mistake from Howard sees him drop back and end up with Le-May on his tail. The four cars are nose-to-tail throughout the last lap but the race ends with Deeth taking the win, Peacock second Howard third Le-May fourth and Green fifth.

Fastest lap went to Smith before his accident with a 1.58,82. Wheeler was disqualified for driving in a manor not compatible with general safety.

MINI SE7ENS: RACE 2

Kieren McDonald and Dave Robinson didn’t start the

second of the races. Andrew Deviny qualified again on pole with Darren Thomas, Graeme Davis, Ashley Davies and Gareth Hunt behind.

It was a great start for all the top five cars with Davis pushing his way into second and Hunt also pulling alongside Thomas for third. But soon Thomas is slowing and pulls off.

Leon Wightman is having another great race having moved up to fourth from ninth on the grid with Shaun Tarlton, Ian Deviny, Julian Proctor and Steve Hopper following.

Davis is glued to the back of Deviny, pulling alongside at the start/finish line but he just can’t find the right opportunity. Wightman is fast catching Hunt and Proctor shakes up the pack by taking sixth from I Deviny.

Into Old Hall Corner and Davis gets some speed up to come alongside A Deviny and takes the lead, with Wightman catching Hunt but he can’t get past until the start of lap four.

Kevin O’Shea’s Mini has developed a horrible sound and he soon pulls off.

Lap five saw Davis still leading closely followed by Deviny then a gap, which is getting smaller, by Wightman, Hunt, Tarlton, Proctor and Hopper.

This is how it stayed until lap

seven when Wightman caught A Deviny and takes an easy pass at Clayhill to take second.

The race finishes with Davis’ first win of the season, Wightman on his first podium of the season, and A Deviny, Hunt then Tarlton who took the S class win.

The fastest laps goes to Wightman with a 2.12.913 and Tarlton in the S class with a 2.16.196. and a big well done to Barry Long in the Invitation Class.

MINI MIGLIAS: RACE 2

Colin Peacock started on pole in the second race with

Kane Astin, Dan Wheeler, Rupert Deeth, James Coulson and Dave Drew following. Aaron Smith is a non-starter due to damage in race one.

Astin starts well to take the lead and Wheeler takes second leaving Peacock in third. Drew is also storming his way up the field into fourth ahead of Deeth, who fights back in the Lakeside straight.

Lap two saw Astin being very defensive in front of Wheeler, but problems for Drew who, after a fantastic start, seems to be going backwards into eighth leading Coulson, Tony Le-May, Rob Howard, Mark Cowan and Sam Summerhayes.

Peacock has recaught the

leading pair and is challenging Wheeler for second allowing Astin to get away.

Lap three saw Deeth catching Peacock then both catching Wheeler who was slow out of Cascades. The top six Minis are close together with a gap back to Howard then another gap to the next pack lead by Drew.

Everyone in the leading group is attacking the car in front but nobody can make it stick until lap six where Deeth makes a move on Peacock and gets third into the Avenue. Peacock manages to get back alongside Deeth into the Chicane but great defending means he has to fall back into fourth and defend himself from Coulson with Le-May joining the fight.

Deeth has caught Wheeler and manages to get the inside line into Druids to take second.

Lap seven sees Wheeler pull off the track giving Coulson third and Peacock fourth, who now has Le-May on his tail. Deeth is catching Astin with Coulson, Le-May, Peacock following then a gap to Howard then another gap then Cowan, Warburton, Green, Simmonds and Summerhayes.

The last lap sees Deeth get the lead into Cascades, but Astin is really putting the pressure on but a big mistake has him ending up in tyre wall and out of the race. The race finishes with Deeth first, Coulson second, Le-May third. Rupert Deeth took the fastest lap with a 1.58.463.

10 Years ago On the 23/24

October weekend,

the Leicestershire track played host to the finals of a somewhat shorter than usual best-8-scores-from 10-rounds Unipart-backed National Challenge.

The outcome of the Mini Se7en title went right down to the wire and four drivers were in with a shout. The 15-lapper on a damp-to-dry track resulted in victory, and the title, for James Hall, making him the third family member to do so after dad, Steve (1978) and uncle, Gary (1981). However, starting from pole position and setting the fastest lap, he almost lost out after some robust driving tactics which saw

the Tandy brothers, Nick and the late Joe, heavily reprimanded, the latter dropping to fourth in the rankings as a result. The other title contenders, Max Hunter and Dave Banwell came third and fourth, headed home by Paul Thompson, with Geoff Letts and James Hayman completing the top six. Familiar names today among the 28 qualifiers were Graeme Davis, Gareth Hunt, Steven Hopper, Malcolm Keat and Paul Spark, with Paul Clark and Damon Astin on the retirements list, and Kane Astin non-starting in Tommo’s spare car.

Despite retiring early on in the race from pole position, Peter Baldwin had already secured the Dunlop Miglia title (his fourth

in five years) and so it was left to runner-up for the second season running, Kelly Rogers, to head home reigning triple Mini Se7en Champion Tim Sims, by a scant half-a second, the latter also setting fastest lap. Colin Peacock and Mark Sims battled over the remaining podium position, with Ralph ‘Pitstop’ Saunders and Sarah Munns next of the 11 finishers from 20 qualifiers. Joining Baldwin on the retirement list were Mike Jackson and Phil Harvey, while Bill Sollis, Ian Gunn and Mark Chandler all went out in the same accident.

20 Years ago The longer GP

circuit catered for the huge

RoverSport/Unipart-DCM entry, round six of 12, which was held over the weekend of 25/26 June, and was part of the BRDC-run ‘Best of British’ motorsport calendar, including Formula 3.

In the Mini Se7ens, Dave Braggins took the win by just over a second from 1989 Champion, Steve Cooper, having a part-season in the 1993 title-winning car of sister, Tina, and setting fastest lap in it. Third was Kelly Rogers ahead of pole-sitter Phil Manser, Shaun King and Neil Johnson, while Champion-elect Ian Curley was back in ninth behind Tim Stanbridge

and Genny Cooke. Non-finishers included, Mark Sims, Mike Jackson and the late Steve Bell. In all, 22 finished from the maximum 32-car grid, with half a dozen reserves not even getting a start.

The 32-car Mini Miglia entry was whittled down to 27 starters of which 20 finished. Heading them at the end of 10 laps was that year’s Champion Chris Lewis (his third of five titles), comfortably clear of fellow Champions Bill Sollis and Owen Hall, with Tony Hobbs, Mick Best and Ian Scott next up, while other former/future Miglia champions in the field included Myk Cable, Andy Hack, Stewart Drake and pole-sitter Ian Gunn who set the fastest lap before dropping out.

30 Years ago There were a brace

of meetings in a busy Mini Silver

Jubilee Challenge, the first of which was on 30 June hosted by the venerable British Motor Racing Marshals’ Club (BMRMC).

Having taken his first 850cc Mini Se7en National title in 1983, Chris Gould underlined his Champion status with his fifth win in a row, starting from pole position and setting the fastest race lap at 1:36.4. Colin Rodger had been closest in practice and so it was in the race, albeit he was nearly seven seconds behind at the flag after 10 laps. The battle for third saw the closest action, with up to nine cars fighting it out, and Russell Grady stealing away near the end ahead of Barbara Cowell, Gary Hall and Ben Dutson. Of the 27 starters, 20 survived to the end, while the one non-starter was current M7RC Ambassador, Mike Jackson.

The battle for 1000cc Mini Miglia honours was pretty much a three-way affair, as it was in the title chase,

with Champion-elect Mike Fry comfortably in front from pole position on this occasion to win his third race of the year, ahead of reigning Champ’ Chris Lewis who set the fastest lap (1:29.0) during his recovery drive after sliding wide early on, and Jim McDougall settling for the ‘bronze’. In fourth a little way behind came Gerald Dale, followed by Dave Hancock and Danny Allpress enjoying a great tussle for fifth.

A couple of months later on 25/26 August, the Donington Racing Club co-hosted a round of the European Formula 2 Championship (incidentally won overall by Kiwi, Mike Thackwell, at one time the youngest driver to start a GP), and on the supporting bill for this prestigious event were Mini Se7ens and Miglias…

Unsurprisingly there was huge entry, bolstered by several of the Irish Mini Se7en drivers bringing their cars over too! Indeed, Irish Champion Dick Smyth finished a creditable third in the main Mini Se7en encounter (round 11 of

15), barely a headlamp ahead of Mike Jackson in fourth, with Barbara Cowell and Colin Rodger completing the top-six. For Gould it was an incredible eighth win in a row, and once again he secured pole position and fastest lap in a dominant title-retaining season. Future Champion, Russell Grady showed his growing stature by shadowing Gould all the way in second. In all, 18 cars finished the 10-lap race from a full grid, leaving enough reserves from the 40+ entry for a consolation event, won overall by the reserve Miglia of Brian Brady. Dave Banwell was first Mini Se7en home, in third, in this 8-lapper.

Meanwhile, the 10-lap Miglia race (round 12 of 16*) saw

another win for Mike Fry but this time by a scant 0.27 secs from Jim McDougall who had beaten Chris Lewis and Fry to pole in qualifying, and to the fastest lap in the race, with Gerald Dale again best of the rest after Lewis had dropped out of the running, along with familiar Mini racing names, Richard Wager and Bryan Slark. Rounding out the leading 1.0-litre frontrunners were Peter Calver, Ian Gunn and Danny Allpress. There were 36 entries, 27 of whom started and 18 finished.

Post-war, Donington Park did not

host race meetings until 1977…

Championship Table 11

The 2012 season got off to a great start with two action packed races in the spring sunshine at Oulton Park in Chesh-ire. A large crowd was treated to two typically Mini 10 lap encounters with ac-

tion all the way from start to finish.

In the Mini Se7ens, reigning champion Paul Spark crossed the line to take the first chequered flag of the year. In the Miglia en-

counter 2010 Cham-pion Paul Thompson took pole position and then led from start to finish to claim his first victory since Spa last year.

It is going to be a great event and its going to be on TV.

FLYING START TO 2013

It’s been business as usual for the Mini

Se7en Racing Club as this year’s

championships got off to a roaring

start. With Round 1 at Donington and

Round 2 & 3 at Rockingham under

our belts the season has well and truly

begun, and brought with it all the

hard fought sideways action we ex-

pect. As of Round 3 it’s

Paul Spark in the lead of the Se7ens,

having won at Donny and placed

strongly in both Rockingham races.

It’s a strong statement from the three-

time champion, who will be looking

to put early points on the board in

pursuit of his fourth consecutive title.

In the Miglias it’s been an all Kane

Astin affair so far; three victories from

three outings leave him very much in

control. But good performances from

Aaron Smith and Tristen Knight show

that he’s got a long way to go to se-

cure the championship, and of

course you can never discount the

experience of 6-time winner Peter

Baldwin. 2013 has also brought with it a few

changes in the way that

M7RC communi-

cate with fans and teams, starting off

with this new look newsletter. Read

on to find out what else we’re doing

to make sure that Europe’s longest

running single make series appeals to

everybody.
