1 The people below all want to make new friends. There are eight suggestions about how to meet people. Decide which suggestion (A–H) would be the most suitable for each person (1–5).

1 Carla Carla likes working with others to protect the natural environment. She lives in a at and doesn’t like pets.

2 Yuki Yuki studied archaeology but didn’t nd it very interesting. He works as a journalist and loves reading. He would like to become more con dent in speaking.

3 Tara Tara loves travelling but she gets seasick . She enjoys learning about other cultures, especially famous works of art from the past.

4 Daniel Daniel is a big fan of Barcelona Football Club and is quite good at music. When they win, he loves singing the club song with other fans. He isn’t interested in his local team.

5 Miriam Miriam is studying psychology. She likes working with children but is also interested in animal psychology and how pets behave. She enjoys doing things outdoors.

WAYS TO MAKE

friends A Study something. Why not go ‘back to school’? Most universities o er evening or summer courses. You can explore your interests, study for a qualifi cation and get to know the other students.

B Go to museums. Many museums have lectures followed by social gatherings where you can meet and talk to people with similar interests. You could also become a volunteer museum guide for overseas visitors – you’ll learn a lot!

C Buy a football season ticket. If you’re a football fan, buy a season ticket for your local stadium. The people who sit near you support your team too but you might have more interests in common.

D Get a dog. While out on walks, your dog will ‘introduce’ you to other dog owners but you could also take him to obedience classes. You’ll have a happy pet and some new friends as well.

E Join a choir. If you’re a frustrated musician, then why not join a choir? Performing will give you a sense of achievement – one you’ll share with the other choir members.

F Volunteer. Teach teenagers about recycling or help clean up a local beach. You’ll feel good about yourself and activities like these are a perfect way of meeting like-minded people.

G Go on a cruise. Cruises are a great way of meeting a wide range of people from di erent countries. There’s always a huge programme of activities to do, including art and history, so you really can’t help making new friends.

H Join a book club (or start one!). Some libraries sponsor book clubs but if yours doesn’t, start one yourself. Invite friends and take it in turns to choose a book to discuss – it’ll certainly improve your conversation skills!

About the exam: In this part of the exam you read a text with ten words missing. There are four options for each missing word. You choose the option which ts best in the space. A These massive statues were carved between AD 1400 and 1600 out of compressed volcanic ash. Many are still standing in di erent places around the island.

B These giant drawings in the Peruvian desert show humans and animals. They can be seen clearly from the sky but not from the ground.

C When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79 , thousands died but the ash preserved the bodies and the buildings. Archaeologists can study what daily life was like in the Italian city.

D The whole site was constructed over thousands of years, although no one knows what it was for or how it was built. The stones are instantly recognisable by visitors to the UK.

E It was built high in the Andes mountains by the Inca in the fteenth century, though no one knows why. It is now one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
