the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water?

John 4:11

M y Dear Friends in Christ,

Our Gospel speaks of the gentle, intentional way that God works to shows mercy to all,

even those who think themselves beyond it. The Samaritan woman knows she is a sinner

and comes to the well at noon, the hottest part of the day to avoid the other townspeo-

ple who will judge her. But Jesus places Himself there, alone, at the scene to meet her.

He has sent the other disciples into town for some food (that he won’t eat!) and waits

patiently for the woman to come. Even though societal norms precluded it, Jesus en-

gages her immediately. Through a true dialogue, giving as much as she gets, the rela-

tionship deepens from physical thirst for water to interior thirst for love, forgiveness and

mercy, for eternity. Jesus does not ignore her sin but helps her to recognize it and move

her forward. She is so ecstatic (today we’d say “pumped”) from her encounter with Jesus,

that she runs into town and begins preaching to the very people she was avoiding. And

she is so convincing that they (even knowing who she is) listen and go to meet Jesus.

This is the kind of forgiveness that Jesus wants to offer us at all times, most especially

during Lent. God wants to offer love and mercy that will help us recognize our sins, have

them forgiven, and raise us to reach out to others. No one is beyond God’s mercy or

apart from God’s love; so we can’t judge anyone else unless we use the same criteria

that Jesus did: true concern for the person, accompaniment of the person in life, en-

gagement in the person’s suffering, all with compassion, forgiveness and support. It is

not easy, but God offers us the help of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation.

In the Eucharist we can be transformed into the One we have received. With Reconcilia-

tion, we can hear in a most personal way, the love God has for us and the assurance that

our sins are forgiven. Make it a point to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation this

Lent. Even if you have been away for awhile or have something heavy on your heart, do

not be afraid. Come meet the same God who was so gentle to the woman at the well.

We pray in a special way with Leiann Mathsen as she undergoes the First Scrutiny this

weekend. The Scrutinies are celebrated on the middle three Sundays of Lent for the Elect

who are preparing for Baptism. These ancient rites of self-searching and repentance,

profoundly rooted in our human experience, have above all, a spiritual purpose. They are

celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them

against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and

the Life. We do this in the presence of the community, because we also need to examine

(scrutinize) who we are, the areas of our lives where we are tempted, or where we seri-

ously sin - in what we do and what we fail to do. We really need healing and the

strength that can come from the support of our sisters and brothers in community. And

we offer that same prayerful support to Leiann.

And thanks to all of you who have offered such support to me over the last few weeks.

I am so grateful to be part of this extended family of St. Francis-St. Mary-Holy Family. I

truly felt your prayers lifting me up and I am truly thankful to you and to God for your

many, many kindnesses to me in difficult times. I hope I can repay your generosity to

me.

Peace,

For a number of years, members of Holy

Family Catholic Community have volunteered

to mow the grass at the old, now abandoned

African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Cemetery

on Jefferson Street in Middletown. Until we

took on this project, the cemetery was overgrown with veg-

etation and the grave sites, some belonging to our Veter-

ans, were terribly neglected. If you can sign up to mow (just

need a push gas mower) one or two times in April through

September, it would be most appreciated. Sign up in the

narthex or contact Hal Mosser at [email protected] or

Elizabeth Renninger Some of you may be aware that Elizabeth re-

cently found out that she has stage 4 pancre-

atic cancer and is currently undergoing chem-

otherapy. St. Thomas More Academy, where

Elizabeth is a teacher, and Holy Family, have

been providing meals to assist the family dur-

ing this time. A campaign called "Embracing Elizabeth" has been

established through the Patty Pollatos Fund to provide financial

assistance for the medical bills and clinical trials. Events are being

scheduled to help the Renningers.

Visit the link below to donate to the Patty Pollatos fund and get

fundraiser details. If you would like to assist with meals and are

not a current member of our Martha Mary Ministry, contact the

parish office. As we come together to support our fellow parish-

ioner, we ask that you keep Elizabeth, her husband, and 4 chil-

dren, close in prayer through this journey.

Meals on Wheels is a program in Frederick County that

ensures that those who are home bound are able to get a

nutritious meal each week day. While partly funded

through the county Department of Aging, the meals are

picked up each day in Frederick and brought to Mid-

dletown and then delivered to individual homes by a team

of volunteer drivers. The commitment is what ever you can

do - as little as a couple of times a month. More drivers are

needed both to pick up the meals in Frederick and to deliv-

er them to the clients. If interested Contact Deacon George

Sisson 301-473-4800 Ex 18 or email [email protected].
