MY

KLETTERS TO THE EDITORCow menace in 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar

Sir, 53rd street, Ashok Nagar has a temple on one side and atriangular Corporation park on the other side. Devotees, whoinclude a number of senior citizens, visit the temple daily.Similarly, a number of persons including senior citizens andchildren visit the park in the morning and evening.

But 53rd Street is not pedestrian friendly. It has become anabode for stray cows let loose by their owners. The other day,a pregnant woman was almost knocked down when a group ofcows ran helter-skelter after they were chased away by a coupleof roadside vegetable and flower vendors in their attempt tosafeguard their stock.

Saturday is the auspicious day for the temple deity and a trafficconstable is usually stationed there to regulate the traffic for thesafe crossing of the large number of devotees who visit thetemple. But most of the time he is busy ‘regulating’ the unrulycows who often squat on the road and obstruct traffic.

I appeal to Corporation officials to take stringent actionagainst the owners of the cows. C. Anupama, 71, 53rdStreet, Ashok Nagar, 94447 77769

Rethink plastic to save planetSir, In most cities including Chennai, there is a rapid increase

in the use of plastic bags by households. Most shops are usingonly plastic bags as carry bags, and these bags are used byhouseholds to get rid of the daily waste.

It is leading to increase in air as well as soil and water pollution. If hill stations like Kodaikanal can made ‘No Plastic Zones’,

why not a city like Chennai. Even if the govt. does not takemeasures to do the same, as citizens it is our personal and moralduty to shun plastic.

Let us take a pledge to minimize the consumption of plasticbased items, by starting with refusing to accept plastic carrybags. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Be wary of strangers posing as companyrepresentatives

Sir, This is to caution and alert the readers about a novelmethod adopted by thieves to rob residents.

On April 20, at around 4 p.m, a man in his 40s knocked on mydoor. He introduced himself as a representative of LG Electronics. He said that his job was to meet LG customers, get their feedbackon the company, and give them tips on maintaining their LGelectronic and home appliances.

When I told him I had an LG airconditioner in the bedroom,he hurried there under the pretext of checking the machine. Asthere was no significant sign in his outward appearance tosuspect him to be a thief, I asked for his visiting card. He evadedthe question and asked me for a glass of water. Only after hisleaving the house did I realize that my expensive Samsungmobile phone kept on the bed was missing.

I lodged a complaint in R3 Ashok Nagar Police Station the sameday, but the culprit has still not been caught. The police are tryingto identify him from footage obtained from CCTV cameras innearby streets.

I appeal to the readers of Mambalam Times, especially seniorcitizens and women alone at home, to be cautious and refrainfrom allowing anyone from entering the house beforeascertaining their identity. It is also important to not leave themalone when they are at work. N. Vijayarghavan, 17, 18thAvenue, Ashok Nagar, 99626 64766

Appeal to paint stripes on speed breakersSir, The speed breakers installed near Govt. Girls School (53rd

Street, near Anajaneyar Koil) and on 7th and 9th Avenue, AshokNagar are not easily noticeable as the painted stripes on themhave completely faded.

As pavements are encroached upon, pedestrians are forced towalk on the road, and with the poorly visible speed breakers, there is a risk of tripping and falling while crossing them, especially for senior citizens. A similar risk is there for motoristsalso, especially during night.

Hence I appeal to Chennai Corporation to paint yellow orreflective lines on the speed breakers for the benefit of bothpedestrians and motorists. S. Ganesan, 48th Street, AshokNagar. Ph: 99402 41244.

Encroachments hamper pedestrians inRanganathan Street

Sir, Reports appearing in the media indicate that the ChennaiCorporation is in the process of pushing the skywalk project inT. Nagar. Due to delay, the initial estimated cost of Rs. 20 croresin 2015 has risen to Rs. 32 crores. The project seeks to build apedestrian skywalk between Mambalam Railway Station and T.Nagar bus terminus to facilitate hassle-free movement ofpedestrians.

In this connection, it would be worthwhile re-visiting theMadras High Court order dated 23.8.2006 which dwelt onencroachments.

Disposing of a slew of writ petitions regarding encroachmentsin commercial streets of T. Nagar, the bench, comprising ChiefJustice A. P. Shah and Justice Chandru, had statedthat “Encroachments on busy streets like Ranganathan Street,Natesan Street, Madley Road should be cleared by the municipalauthorities in order to ensure smooth flow of traffic, and it isneedless to say that there is no necessity of issuing notice for theremoval and demolition of the encroachments in public streetsand roads, as such encroachment shall be liable to be removedforthwith. So also the electricity connection or sewerageconnection facilities shall be liable to be disconnected forthwith”.

If the civic body had abided by the order of the High Court, encroachments would not have grown to the presentmonumental proportions. These roads are highly unsafe withno proper fire safety mechanisms.

First and foremost, the Corporation must clear allencroachments on the pavements of Ranganathan Street/Railway Border Road for the safe passage of pedestrians. Thatin itself might mitigate the need for a skywalk and save taxpayers’ money. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Garbage dumped under transformer affectsresidents

Sir, I am a resident of 94th Street, 15th Sector, K. K. Nagar. Thereis a transformer near my residence. Local residents and passersbydump garbage underneath the transformer. Passersby havealso converted the spot into an open urinal.

It is affecting the nearby residents due to the unhygieniccondition and foul smell. We are exposed to infectious diseasesdue to the proliferation of mosquitoes.

I appeal to fellow residents not to dump garbage in the spotbut to throw it only in the designated Corporation bins.

I also appeal to Chennai Corporation to clear the garbage andinstall a signboard declaring the place as a ‘No litter zone’.Anantha Padmanabhan

Skywalk an avoidable projectSir, The need to construct a skywalk at an estimated cost of Rs.

30 crores between Mambalam Railway Station and T. Nagar busterminus for the benefit of commuters rose due to the perenniallyheavy congestion in Ranganathan Street on one side and RailwayBorder Road/Natesan Street on the other.

The primary reason for the congestion is the unabatedencroachment by shop owners and roadside vendors of thepavements in these roads.

In the 30-ft wide Ranganathan Street, 10 feet on either side hasbeen hijacked by shops/commercial establish-ments. Similarly, the whole of Railway Border Road is encroached upon byshopkeepers and hawkers.

Instead of putting up a skywalk which, over a period of time, would probably become another haven for encroachment,Corporation should first remove all the encroachments andretrieve public space on these busy roads. Further, the by-lanebetween Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street can be clearedof all impediments so that it can be made use of by the public. Whilea small portion on the eastern-side of the by-lane is being usedby the near-by shops/establishments to dump their waste, theother half is in an utter state of neglect.

The skywalk project is a waste of public money. Retrieving theencroached space will in itself solve the commuter’s congestionproblem. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Dried leaves dumped on pavement outsideNatesan Park

Sir, Park maintenance staff are dumping waste like fallen driedleaves from Natesan Park, T. Nagar on the pavement outside thepark.

It is causing nuisance to the public and nearby residents. Withthe summer peaking, the dried leaves can catch fire.

I have appealed several times to the gardener as well asCorporation officials, but to no avail. Reghu, T. Nagar

Based on the statistics of complaints received over the past twoyears, Metrowater has dug trial pits in more than 300 streets in theneighbourhood to assess the condition of the water supply and sewagenetwork.

According to a Metrowater official, T. Nagar has been chosen for theimplementation based on the Central-government sponsored SmartCities mission.

The pits are 1 to 2 meters deep, and ground radars are used to studythe network.

The pits will be closed in a few days after the study, and the reportis expected to be submitted by the end of the month.
