The folk myth tale of the low-born farmhand Nandan and hisunfathomable devotion and ‘bhakthi’ for Lord Nataraja ofChidambaram was a familiar tale among Tamilians for manydecades.

It was written as a musical titled ‘Nandan Charitram’ byGopalakrishna Bharathiyar ‘circa’ early 19th century. This workwas a great success and proved immensely popular in the form of‘Harikatha Kalashepham’. Later it was made as a hit play and asa silent film in 1923 and 1930.

As a stage-play it was a great success and, while many stagestars of those days played the lead role, the most popular of themall was S. V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar. With an impressive andhandsome stage presence and melodious voice and training inclassical Carnatic music, he was a very popular stage star. Notsurprisingly, he was the first choice to play the title role in the 1933talkie version.

The 1923 silent film version was made by the now-forgottenIndian film pioneer, Raghupathy Prakash while the 1930 versionwas written and directed by another now-forgotten film pioneerRaja Sandow who himself played the role of Nandan. As a sociallyconscious filmmaker who was far ahead of his times, he presentedhis film as a protest against the oppression of the poor and thelowborn by the ‘haves’ and holier-than-thou folks.

When cinema began to talk and sing Tamil in 1931, the first talkieversion of this tale was produced in Calcutta by the celebrated NewTheaters, which made many milestone movies in Hindi and Bengaliduring the 1930-1940s. The company also made a few Tamil filmsand one of them was ‘Nandanar’ (1933).

Another now-forgotten pioneer filmmaker, P. V. Rao, directed it.The title role of the ‘untouchable’ (Mahatma Gandhi called them‘Harijans’ and they are now known as ‘Dalits’) and lowborn ‘ShivaBhaktha’ was enacted by S. V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar. Besideshis fame and name as stage star, he was also popular for his bestselling gramophone records, known to the common man andwoman as ‘plates’. The most popular of them all was ‘Jaya JayaGokula Bala…’ Indeed to this day this song is associated with hisname like a signature tune!

The P. V. Rao - S.V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar version was not asuccess and very few remember it today.

In 1935 another version of ‘Nandanar’ was produced and itcreated history at many levels. One of the immortals of Carnaticmusic, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer made his only appear-ance in films as the rich Brahmin landowner Vedhiyar under whomNandan worked as his lowly ill-treated farmhand. A legend in hislifetime, the mercurial maestro of music was a bohemian andagreed to play the role although the lead role of Nandan was to beplayed by a woman, K. B. Sundarambal. Indeed KBS had reserva-tions because she herself was a lowborn woman whileMaharajapuram was a highborn Brahmin! Such class, caste, communal distinctions and prejudices prevailed in top gear in thosedays. But the great musician did not care for he was above suchnarrow views and tunnel vision attitudes. He received a fee of threethousand rupees while KBS got an unheard of salary of one lakhrupees for the movie. The two of them acting in a filmbecame news per se! Public expectation ran high and moviegoerseagerly awaited the release of the film. But the film proved to bea flop!

The next version and the most successful of them all was madein 1942 by Gemini Studios. Dandapani Desikar played Nandan inthis movie. The famed Tamil film star and prominent film personof his day Serukalathur Sama acted as the Brahmin landlord. Thefilm was directed by Murugadasa (A. Muthuswami Iyer), a pioneerof Tamil cinema, now sadly forgotten. The producer was S. S.Vasan and it was one of his early ventures after he had launchedhis Gemini Studio in 1941.

Not many are aware that Vasan wished to cast ThyagarajaBhagavathar as Nandanar but he was not available. Someone inthe studio suggested that the great and legendary singer G. N.Balasubramaniam could be cast in the main role. Vasan laughedit out because that handsome regal-looking and fair-skinned Brah-min would never fit into the low-born farm-hand Nandan’s role! Thefinal choice therefore fell on Desikar.

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARREDAn email message received from friend C.

Rajan via his iPad, which he punched intomy computer reveals what great peoplewho preside over the destinies of millions ofpeople speak when they, for the nonce, forget their frills and epaulets and talkabout the smells and sounds just like theman in the street.

This is what Rajan’s mail said : “Sadanand, did you ever hear about the time QueenElizabeth had to share her horse-drawncarriage with Idi Amin (President of Uganda)and one of the horses farted very loudly?Queen Liz apologised, “So sorry about that. You must excuse us, Mr. President”

Idi Amin (whose Uganda had been aBritish slave colony until he threw them outinto the ocean), grinning at the chance to beone up on the monarch, expansively said,“That’s all right, Your Majesty! These thingshappen. I thought it was the horse!”

History and Rajan are silent on whetherthe duo ever had diplomatic meetings afterthat ride in state because he rather hur-riedly packed off to Arabia and ended hisdays surrounded by a few hundred women, not soldiers,

undisturbed by farting royal horses. Rajan probably sent the gem to me be-

cause he knew that I was born in Kenyawhich is cheek by jowl with Uganda andthat, geographically, we are almost kin.Look at that quilt-work continent of ex-panding number of republics, whose claimto eternity, according to imagination, isthat the human beings entered this globethrough Africa as variations of apes andevolved into a final finished handsome manlike Sadanand.

I am willing to go that far but I doubtwhether Queen Elizabeth will ever forgetthe greatest insult innocently handed outby friend Idi whose English was not Oxonian.
