Half the trouble generated for the 10 to 5time-filler for the welfare of the inscrutableowner of the globe, variously labelled as God,Bhagavan, Allah et al, is preventable if God,once every ten hours or more, wakes up fromhis Kumbhakarna siestas.

The shouting supplicators for thehidden inexhaustible riches must have takenthe matrimonial oath “Yes, we will”, when thegood old God and Wife made the couple sign onthe dotted line which, in the course of a fewdays, being written in self-deleting ink, gotdeleted. The honeymooning couple were ad-vised by crooked lawyers that, since theSchedule did not contain the items and actu-ally there is no evidence of the acceptance of the liability to protect a goodman like M. A. Sadanand who had tumbledinto the snakepit of the legal profession, God,his Wife and the army of legal manipulatorswere not bound by the manifestation of theRoyal couple’s rantings, which if any, got self-deleted thanks to a pot of vanishing ink. The creators of the new profession ofdeceit through centuries of promoting, fakingand legal wild goose chasing, after millions ofignoramus make law in law factories, throve all over the world and called them-selves “Learned”, the coping stone in the build up. There were great men - not merelybrainy or vocabulary wise, but inherentlyhonest. All good things, bad things and forget-table things, people and incidents must end.Democracy has blessed many a forgettablefellows who, without political benediction, would have, at best, risen to the position of alawyer’s clerk.

God got chest pain laughing non-stop forhours because one chap stuck like a leach toa politician and was suffered to be one of thebunch of Government Pleaders when I wasthe chief G.P. After I was guillotined one finenight, he jumped up. Then, after many ropeswere shredded, this great jurist was upped asa judge. I had a small Civil Revision Petitionbefore him that could have been disposed ofin 5 minutes but, after 15 adjournments, notat my instance, I asked him to verify a datefrom his papers as my print was smudged. Hesaid, “Don’t put to me questions “. It took me40 years to learn that lesson.

After another adjournment, the case cameup before Justice Prabha Sridevan and it wasallowed in 5 minutes. Justicing is like theI.P.L or the Wimbledon or a Test withoutHarper.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 851957 was a very successful and memorable year for Meiyappan,

and he had every reason to feel happy. Never one to rest on his oarsand laurels, he planned ahead to become one of the top film producersof India ....

1958 continued to be another hectic year for Meiyappan and AVMStudios. Pictures in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada were produced asearlier. True to his wont, Meiyappan struck a new path when hedubbed a Bengali film into Tamil.

After having created film history dubbing a filmfrom one language to another with ‘Harishchandra’ in 1943 and then‘Ram Rajya’ in 1948, his interest in dubbing had not waned. In 1958,he chose to dub just not yet another film but an important picture byone of the finest film makers of India, a creative celluloid poet DebakiBose. The film was ‘Ratna Deep’ (1951) considered an importantBengali film for many reasons beside its maker!

Debaki Kumar Bose (1898-1971) was one of the celebrated filmmakers of India who contributed much to the exalted status and statureof Bengali cinema since the 1930s. Hailing from an affluent family,he taught in a college, gave it up to join the Indian FreedomMovement, later worked a journalist and entered films in 1930 as ascreenwriter. He joined the history-making Indian movie company inCalcutta, New Theaters, and took his bow as writer-director with thehit, ‘Chandidas’ (1932). In this film, he introduced a new genre offolk myth based on the lives of saints.

Later, he made films like ‘Puran Bhakt’ (1933), ‘Meerabai’(1933), ‘Seetha’ (1934, a lyrical film about Rama and Seetha, and theRamayana hero’s anguish over the separation from his consort),‘Inquilab’ (1935), ‘Vidyapathi’ (1937), ‘Nartaki’ (1940), and ‘RatnaDeep’ (1951).

In 1961, he made a valuable documentary ‘Argya’. It was adaptedfrom Rabindranath Tagore’s poems about the caste system in Hindusociety.

Debaki Bose’s films inspired many film makers and the notedTelugu filmmaker B. N. Reddi stated that he was inspired by DebakiBose’s films, especially ‘Seeta’. The impact was so deep that he choseto give up his profession of chartered accountancy and become a filmmaker.

‘Ratna Deep’ is an interesting film with a more interesting ‘backstory’. It was based on a successful novel by Prabhat KumarMukherjee which, in turn, was inspired by the celebrated ‘BhowalSanyasi Case’. It is a ‘cause célèbre’, as lawyers say, and isconsidered as one of the most sensational and incredible cases in legalhistory.

A Raja of a small estate Bhowal in Bengal during the British IndianReign died young, and his family carried his corpse to the cemeteryand performed his cremation. Many years later, a bearded ascetic orsanyasi came to the family claiming to be the Raja! The widow andthe family members were stunned because the sanyasi bore anastonishing resemblance to the Raja. He even had the same birthmarks and moles! And he had an equally astonishing tale to tell.

He, the Raja , was not really dead but was only in deep coma whenhis body was carried for the funeral. At the cemetery when his‘corpse’ was about to be cremated, a strong storm suddenly burstforth and the family and mourners ran away leaving the ‘body’ on thepyre. The storm, blowing winds, sound and fury of thunder andlightning and pouring rain woke him up out of the coma and he wasshocked to find where he was! Suspecting family conspiracy to getat the rich estate, and feeling disgusted with human greed and perfidy,he chose not to return to the family and wandered in the Himalayas.

By K. S. RamakrishnanIf those of you who have

never possessed an Applecomputer or an iPod or aniPhone or an iPad were be-wildered by the countlessnewspaper columns of en-comia paid to Steve Jobsafter his demise on Wednes-day and thought that hehad played no role in yourlives, you are wrong!

But for Steve Job’s earlyinvention Apple Macintosh, this newspaper MambalamTimes which you have beenreading regularly for over16 years, would not evenhave been born!

Till the advent of AppleMacintosh in 1986 - to-gether with the now-ubiqui-tous mouse, AppleLaserWriter and the soft-ware packages Mac-writeand Aldus PageMaker -anyone who wished to pub-lish a newspaper had to nec-essarily own a printingpress with a manual com-posing room. The invest-ment in such an elaborateinfrastructure would havebeen totally non-viable fora weekly tabloid newspa-per of 8 to 16 pages andthere would, therefore, havebeen no Mambalam Times!

It was Apple Macintoshthat proved to be the gamechanger! In it one could com-pose news stories, editthem, give them headlines, incorporate photographsand place them on a pageexactly like they would lookon the final printed copy. Aprint-out of the page couldthen be taken from theApple LaserWriter, whichused the technology then

Steve Jobs who made Mambalam Times possible!

known as WYSIWYG - WhatYou See Is What You Get! Thisprinted page could later be sentto a printing press, howeverfar it may be, for the replica-tion of thousands of copies ofthe newspaper for subsequentdistribution.

The IBM PC, the alternativedesktop computer of thosedays, did not have any of thesecapabilities. It had no facilityfor page make-up, and the out-put could only be from a dot-matrix printer which was unfitfor further processing for theproduction of a printed news-paper.

Giving directions to the IBM

PC, using what was known asMicrosoft Disk Operating Sys-tem (MS DOS), was quite anightmare. For example, tocopy a file from the hard driveto a floppy drive, one had totype each letter of the elabo-rate command “copy c:\docs\myfolder\filename a:\”. Forrenaming a file, the commandwas ‘ren c:\docs\myfolder\filename.old filename.new”,and for deleting a file, it was “delc:\docs\myfolder\ filename”.

The mouse that came withApple Macintosh convertedthese tasks into child’s play. Each file you created wouldbe represented by a picture

(which Steve Jobs called‘icon’) on the computerscreen and, to delete it, youhad only to point themouse’s arrow on that iconand drag it to another iconrepresenting the trash box.To copy a file from a harddrive to a floppy drive, youhad to merely drag that file’sicon from the hard drive iconto the floppy drive icon. Thisprocess, which is incorpo-rated in all computer soft-ware today, was revolution-ary in 1986, and it wasSteve Jobs who introducedthat user-friendly step andnamed it as ‘graphic inter-face’.

I was one of the earliestusers of Apple Macintoshin India, having bought onealmost as soon as it waslaunched in USA. Its speci-fications were quite rudi-mentary (Monochrome, with only 1MB RAM and20MB hard disc) with a pricethat was quite prohibitiveat 2900 US dollars! TheLaserWriter cost anotherwhopping $3200. But Ineeded the system forAmerican Education Aids, the educational institutionI was running then.

Steve Job’s guiding prin-ciple in life was ‘To think dif-ferently’ and I too adopted itwhile deciding to experimentwith the publication of aneighbourhood newspaperusing the infrastructurecreated by him.

And the rest is history! So, let me also, on behalf

of the readers of this news-paper, add my humble sa-lute to that genius SteveJobs!
