MITOSIS & MEIOSIS REVIEWTwo Cell Division Processes

What is Mitosis?

The cell division process of making body cells.

What is Meiosis?

The cell division process of making sex cells.

When does Interphase occur?

Interphase happens BEFORE Mitosis or Meiosis. Most of a cells’ life is spent in interphase.

What happens during Interphase?

The cell doubles in size

DNA is copied

What are the steps of Mitosis in order?

ProphaseMetaphaseAnaphaseTelophase

What happens during Prophase?

The nuclear membrane disappears

Chromosomes wind up.

What happens during Metaphase?

The chromosomes line up along the equator (middle) of the cell.

What happens during Anaphase?

Chromosomes are pulled apart so one copy goes to each side of the cell.

What happens during Telophase?

Nuclear membranes form around each set of chromosomes

Chromosomes unwind

What happens during Cytokinesis?

The cell splits into two cells.

What is made by Mitosis?

Two cells, which are identical to each other and the parent cell.

Body Cells.

What is made by Meiosis?

Four cells with half the DNA of the parent cell.

Sex Cells.

How are Mitosis and Meiosis similar?

They make more cells

They go through Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase at least once.

How are Mitosis and Meiosis different?

Mitosis makes 2 cellsMeiosis makes 4 cells

Meiosis goes through each phase twice.

What is Binary Fission?

The process by which prokaryotes make more of themselves when one cell divides into two identical cells.

If a body cell has 20 chromosomes, how many will be in the sex cell?

10 Chromosomes (half).
