SO, WHAT’S GOING ON AT MY ALMA MATER?

With the beginning of summer upon the Mayfield community, Mayfield students and staff bids a bittersweet farewell to the Class of ‘04 and gladly ushers in the promising Class of ‘05. Class of ‘04 Scholarship Recipients

Reflect Quality, Involvement and Character

The Honor’s Day Program was held at Mayfield High School on May 28, 2004, in the auditorium. Fifty three school and community organizations were on hand to present scholarships and awards to members of the Class of ‘04. Once again, thanks to the generosity of our great alums, the Mayfield Alumni Association was the leader in both number of student recipients and amount of scholarships. We can’t say enough how proud we are that our alums continue to step up when it comes to giving back to Mayfield High School and it’s student body. Thanks to our donors, many students are able to get a leg up on the financial burden of attending college. This year’s donors will appear in the next issue of The Alumni Voice. Our scholarship committee has an ominous task to deal with in deciding who the recipients will be. Because so many qualified students apply for the Alumni Scholar-ships, the process of reading applications and conduct-ing interviews becomes time consuming and difficult. Each year, the committee is overwhelmed by the excep-tional quality of student applicants. This year’s committee consisted of Ross DeJohn III, chairman, Dan Cox, Patti Delfs, Dave Huelsman, and Carla Jaycic. Following are the recipients of this year’s scholarships: The $500 Frank and Annette Alvarez/Markfrank Cos-metology Scholarship was presented to Andrea Hal-co. Andrea plans to attend Ohio State University and will work in a solon near the campus. She passed her State Board of Cosmetology test on June 1, 2004 with100% on the written portion and above average on her practical. Andrea plans on a business management major and someday hopes to open her own salon. Two Ron Ritner Memorial Scholarships in the amount of $500 each were awarded to Cherise Kent and Peter Dalpiaz. Both students were very active in sports and letter winners. Ron was a 1955 graduate of Mayfield. The $500 Norman Huelsman Memorial Scholarship was given to Francesca DiFiore. Mr. Huelsman, a 1942 graduate of Mayfield, was an elementary and mid-dle school teacher in the Mayfield Schools. This schol-arship is awarded to a student who will be majoring in the field of education.

The William H. Shaylor Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Stephanie Grossman in the amount of $500. Mr. Shaylor was a social studies teacher, middle school principal, and business manager at Mayfield for 42 years. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has made a positive impact on the Mayfield Schools and has an appreciation for the opportunities offered by the staff and community. The John Szuhay Theatre Scholarship, established by Mr. John Szuhay, former MHS teacher and theatre director, is awarded to a student who has been active in drama. This year’s recipient is Kristie Barnes. Kristie received $500. Receiving the Tim Collaros Memorial Scholarship this year was Paulina Klinkosz. Paulina was awarded $500 because she was active in sports, a letter winner, and also active in school activities. Tim was a 1964 graduate of Mayfield. The Michael Patrick Colombi Memorial Scholarships are awarded to two students who have lettered in a sport and have achieved high academic excellence. Michael was a 1993 MHS grad. This years recipients of $1000 each are Brighty Sullivan and Matthew Fadel. The Butch Woodie Memorial Scholarship is being awarded in 2004 for the first time. Butch, a 1960 MHS graduate and former athlete, passed away this year. His family chose to memorialize his spirit through a con-tinuing scholarship fund. This scholarship is intended for a student who is highly active in school activities, possesses exceptional character, and also has been active in athletics. Matthew Siracusa is the first recipi-ent of the Butch Woodie Memorial Scholarship. Four General Scholarships were awarded to outstand-ing seniors who had one or both parents graduate from Mayfield. Factors such as academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, attendance, and financial need are considered in the evaluation. Congratulations to the following students: Danielle Ruggieri - $1000 Michael DeJohn - $1000 Jill Grabfelder - $1000 Rachael Grilley - $500

Dave’s experience will continue our practice of selecting Mayfield’s finest for our scholarship program. Snyder, who immediately makes the Executive Board younger!, is anxious to lend a hand in the area of fundraising. Dr. Katherine Arnold Kolcaba Katherine Arnold Kolcaba graduated from Mayfield in 1962, and in 1965 she earned her RN from St. Like’s Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to Case West-ern Reserve University for both her Masters Degree in Gerontological Nursing in 1987 and her Ph.D. in Nursing Research in 1997. While Dr. Kolcaba’s career has tak-en her on many different Paths, she considers herself first and foremost, a nurse. Upon receiving her masters and making continual advancements in the field of Ger-ontology, she began teaching student nurses this im-portant specialty. In 1986, Dr. Kolcaba was hired as a professor of nursing at the University of Akron, where she remains today. During her ten year journey toward her doctorate, Dr. Kolcaba focused her attention, studies, and teaching on the importance of patient comfort. She ultimately devel-oped the “Comfort Theory”, and last year she published her book, Comfort Theory and Practice, which contin-ues to inspire nurses and nursing students. Testimony to Dr. Kolcaba’s success is the many awards she has earned throughout her career. Her humanistic philosophy of nursing has been the grounding force of her career and continues to guide her in her many valu-able contributions to the field of nursing.

Ronald H. Kramer While earning a B.A. in Speech and a B.A. in History at Baldwin Wallace College as well as a M.A. in Radio/Television and Film at Northwestern University, Ronald Kramer was the General Manager at each institution’s radio station. For the past 30 years, Mr. Kramer has been the Execu-tive Director of both Jefferson Public Radio/Southern Oregon University and JPR Foundation, Inc. During that time, Ronald Kramer developed JPR as one of the nation’s largest regional public radio enterprises. A long list of “firsts” includes the first federally funded solar-powered FM translator, which pioneered this technolo-gy’s development. In 1995, JPR reopened the Cascade Theater in Redding, CA as a performing arts center. This has been a catalyst to help revitalize Redding’s downtown. JPR also operates a nonprofit publishing business. JPR publishes periodic books devoted to re-gional topics and magazines such as the Jefferson Monthly, the member magazine for JPR. JPR’s newest venture is the Western States Museum of Broadcasting. A personal invitation from President Clinton to a White House reception honoring the 25th anniversary of public radio acknowledges Ronald Kramer’s vision and contri-bution to help make JPR the most creative public radio operation in the nation.

This prestigious golf course was acclaimed in 2003 by Golf Digest as one of the best new golf courses in the country. Calusa Pines was pivotal in his recovery process. In addition, Mr. Chensoff was continually motivated and inspired by his loving family.

Honors John Steadman The GCBCA honored former Mayfield teacher and head boys basketball coach, John Steadman at it’s Spring Banquet held on April 22, 2004. Coach Steadman re-ceived the Dennis Lustig “Golden Deeds Award” for his many years and countless contributions to both high school and college basketball. John’s coaching career covers 40 years at six different schools on the high school and college levels. The following is an excerpt from the program: When John Steadman wanted to let one of his players know that they had missed an opportunity to get the ball inside to a post player, he would bellow out “let the big dogs eat.” This is just one of the many colorful expres-sions Coach Steadman used to communicate to his players. Whether you know him as “Coach”, “John”, or “Steady”, John Steadman is a friend to anyone who has ever been associated with him on or off the basketball court.

Looking Back… The following is an excerpt from the halftime program at

the Mayfield football game on October 11, 1991.

Ladies and gentlemen, unbelievable as it may seem to many of us here tonight, this is actually the 69th season for a Mayfield High School football team. The first team to play was back in 1922. It had a grand total of 13 players, 11 on the field plus two very busy substitutes. The players wore soft shoulder pads. Their jerseys had numbers on the back - “1” through “13”, and leather helmets were an option (if you could afford to buy one). This inaugural team had no official coach - just a teacher by the name of Mr. Goodman, who volunteered to help by arranging games with neighboring schools. He also provided transportation, bought the football and carried the water bucket and bandag-es. And in those days, “wildcat” was an animal to be seen only at the Cleveland Zoo. There was no band, no cheerleaders and only a handful of fans to root them on. The first school this neophyte team played was Chester. The game was played on a dirt field on Seneca Road near SOM Center Road. The final score of that first game was Mayfield 6, Chester 0. Ladies and gentlemen, we are privileged to have with us here tonight the man who scored that first and only touch-down of that very first game 69 years ago. He was also on the basketball team, went to the state tournament in track for discus, javelin, and pole vault. He also won the silver medal in wrestling. He’s here tonight with his Mayfield High School sweetheart and his wife of 63 years, Irene. Irene definitely was his personal cheerleader, for she never missed a game. Let’s have a warm welcome to the star halfback of Mayfield’s 1922 team, Mr. Meryl Reynolds, and his wife, Irene.
