The MiracleThe miracle of Hanukkah is that a small

amount of oil, enough for only one day,

lasted eight days. The oil maintained the

“eternal light” in the Temple. What precip-

Sisterhood MessageAs we approach the midway point of the year, the words of our mission might re-fresh our inspiration:

The MBIEE Sisterhood comprises a group of dedicated women who seek to enhance Conservative Jewish values through service to, and support for, both our congregation and the wider community. Ongoing opportunities to learn and grow are shared through events and programming designed to educate, enrich, empower and inspire.

Sisterhood’s December and January plans are in keep-ing with our mission.

Jewish values are at the heart of the program on Sunday, December 20, 11:30 A.M. For “Memories of Our Heritage,” a collaborative program between MBIEE Sisterhood and the Women of KI, we are asked to “share a Jewish ritual item of meaning.” Come to the MBIEE social hall. Bring something of special Judaic meaning for you that brings back memories from your family’s past. Refreshments will be served. The 2nd annual Brunch & Games, since this fundraiser was such fun last year, returns to MBIEE’s social hall on Sunday, January 17, 11:30 A.M. Come play your favorite games. Bring a friend. While you’re have fun, enjoying the camaraderie, you also can take pleasure that you’re contrib-uting support to the life of the shul. Planning for both these programs is high on the agenda for Sisterhood’s general meeting on Thursday, December 17, 7:30 P.M. The meeting will open with a d’var hochmah from Sharon Byer on the leading points she gleaned at this summer’s Leadership Institute run by Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. You are cordially invited. Be a part of MBIEE Sister-hood. Shalom,

Ariana Burrows, Sisterhood President

Sisterhood Atlantic City Trip–October 7, 2015What a wonderful day! Everyone enjoyed themselves so much, they wanted to know when the next trip would take place.

We as a sisterhood group should be very proud of this great accomplishment for MBIEE. All of our members on the bus were very friendly and hospitable to the non-member supporters, many of whom were our personal friends and acquaintances. Their attendance made the day a very pleasant and happy successful day. This friendly atmosphere and our efforts for every one's comfort and enjoyment together with !"#$!#%%&'($)#*!"#%+$*$,"#-./#-*0$#-!#%!*&-#%+$1..2$,0*--&-1$and cooperation made all go smoothly.

D’var Torah presented to Sisterhood by Sharon ByerNat’ah Karem, planting a vineyard is Women’s League’s current theme. It is a phrase taken from Proverbs’ Eishet Chayil, a woman of valor (Proverbs 31:17). I am sure, if I were to ask each of you to describe your images of this phrase we would all share a common picture–our “bubas,” our mothers or mommies, perhaps aunts and cousins working with their hands to nurture us and provide us with the fruits of their labors, from the little plots of land behind their rowhome, maybe little farms, and certainly; in their kitchens and pantries. Yiddishkeit and culture were planted there, too. It came with the food and their values and it also nurtured us. I’ve traveled the world and photographed, among many, the Thais, Laotians, Cambodians, and Indians planting their seeds and tilling their soils, of course, with their beasts of burden, the water buffalo and horses. Somehow, and I don’t know why, their food remains traditional. So does their culture, steeped still so deep. Today is another era for use. We are not in our kitchens or pantries or gardens all day. But we must still plant vineyards–for our future generations. How will we and what will they be? What will they produce? What relevance do we, as sisters, hold for the future?

Tour de Shuls Bicycle RaceOn October 20, at 7:00 A.M., the Forman Mills Tour de Shuls bicycle race began registration and sign-in. The race is a fund– raiser for the Camp Ramah Tikvah program, which helps to sponsor a camp experience for physically and mentally chal-lenged children, and their parents. Over $30 thousand dol-lars were raised by the different rider groups, which left from Temple Sinai on the 20th. Cantor Tilman led an early minyan. A spread of juices, coffee, bagel and schmier were available. Bob Seidman and Ben Burrows represented MBIEE and the Men’s Club. This was extremely well organized. G.G. Sima’s Potato Latkesfrom Marilyn Senders Recipe BlogWhen my sister and I began doing recipe research for our catering business many years ago, we decided that mini potato latkes would be a great addition to our list of hors d’oeuvres. After going through scores of recipes with various quantities .-&"44$4&6.3+@&)."C$4&*+$"4@&*+$"4&2+3<*)@&<"%F./&<$"1@&$%2G@&we deferred to Saul’s Mom’s philosophy and recipe which is the height of simplicity.

When making a quantity of these, be sure to prepare the recipe in small batches—only what your frying pan or pans will accommodate immediately after grating and mixing. If you let the batter stand around for more than 15 minutes, the potatoes will begin to turn an unappetizing gray.

G.G. Sima’s Potato Latkes

* peanut oil for frying * 3 large or 4 small potatoes (preferably russet or Yukon Gold) * 2 large eggs * 1/2 tsp. kosher salt * fresh ground pepper to taste& H& I&J*)0G&5#$17&,+"%$4&.#(.#&K.0%(.#"1L * sour cream (optional) * applesauce (optional)

Begin heating at least a half inch of oil in a large frying pan or wok to a temperature of 365°F. Watch carefully to make sure it does not overheat while you are preparing the batter. Also, make sure that the oil level does not come too close to the top of the pan in case the oil begins to foam.

Peel potatoes and place in a bowl of cold water to prevent oxidation if they will be sitting around for more than a few minutes before grating.

In a large bowl, lightly beat the eggs, salt, pepper, and onion (if desired) with a wire whip. Set aside.

Run potatoes through the grating disc of the food processor. Turn out into a clean bowl.

Add the potatoes to the egg mixture and stir thoroughly. Ease large, rounded tablespoonsful of the batter into the hot .(1G&N+7&3#%(1&,.14$#&*+.;#&.#&*.%%.<&"#4&%/$#&6(0&$"2/&.#$&over to do the same on the other side. Remove from oil with two forks, slotted spoon, or spider and drain on paper towels.

If making several batches, rinse all bowls and utensils in plain, cold water before proceeding to next batch. Hot water will cause the leftover potato starch to cling to the items.

Serve immediately with sour cream or applesauce if desired, or freeze when cool in a single layer, tightly wrapped. To rewarm, bake, uncovered at 350°F. just until heated through.Visit Marilyn’s blog at http://marilyferecipes.blogspot.com
