Happy Thanksgiving and Hanukkah to all! This year is unique since Hanukkah

and Thanksgiving occur at the same time. (It happened once before in 1888 and the-oretically, could happen again in 2070.)

The connection between both of these holidays is apparent. The Baal Shem Tov taught us that everything a person sees or hears is meant to be a lesson in life. Thanksgiving and Hanukkah have more connections than any other holiday. Thanksgiving is about the journey to escape religious persecution for freedom in a new land, the establishment of a democratic charter and the belief in G-d. Hanukkah is similar in that we Jews believe in the Maccabees and their battle for religious freedom in our own land, and thanked G-d for our ability to celebrate our religious freedom.

We, at MBIEE have begun our unique connection with KI through several initiatives. Last month both of our shuls met in the KI sanctuary to combine services, sermons and an Oneg Shabbat. On January 24, we will repeat this event in our rededicated sanctuary. The ability for our two shuls to share common values and maintain our own distinctive practices is unique.

We have already begun to receive advice and help from !"#$%&$'()*#$+!,(($-.$#+!,/0-+"-.1$'23$.#4$,**'2.!-.1$+'(!-ware (to be fully functional by the end of the year). Over the next few months, we both plan to cross-advertise events with the hope that members of both shuls will attend each other’s events. Please keep your eye on the Shofar, eBlasts and Shabbat$56#3$+'$6'2$4-00$/#$27$!'$8,!#$4-!"$4",!$-+$",7-pening throughout the building.

In our new home, we have the vision and strength of over 55 years as we continue to distinguish ourselves and provide traditional services and events for our community. Our goal is growing and maintaining our individuality and, at the same time, discovering what we have in common with our neighbors. We want you, our congregants, to SHARE OUR

JOURNEY forward into both familiar and new territory.

board meeting followed by a general meeting to approve our revised bylaws.

We will have an optional traditional Sunday brunch before the meeting at 9:30 A.M. at a minimal charge.

KI and MBIEE to Celebrate Shabbat TogetherJoin us as we welcome members of the KI community

for Shabbat services on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 8:00 P.M. Rabbis Addison and Sussman will be

presenting a lively discussion.Come meet our friends from KI

at our joint Service and Oneg Shabbat.

We’d like to remind everyone at MBIEE that everyone should eat every day! Therefore, providing food for those who are unable to provide for themselves has been a focus of our action in recent years. Thank you to all for the generous food donations during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, especially. The Mitzvah Food Pantry, at Beth Sholom, our neighboring synagogue, was very grateful. The items you gave enable the pantry to nourish community people. Don’t stop! It’s the season for Thanksgiving and Hanukkah! This year these holidays arrive together. If you choose latkes or turkey, and lots of trimmings too, leave some non-perishables in the donation box outside our sanctuary, so others may share. As winter arrives, hot foods are especially welcome. Soups, vegetables, pasta, all provide healthy meals. For a further mitzvah, help JRA (!"#$%&'"($")*+',) to prepare and deliver packages, especially on December 15, and January 19, the Sundays when food is delivered far and wide. If you need further encouragement, and details on how to take action with us, please call 215-927-6737 or send email to -.',"+/!01+*-+2. We’d like to hear from you! New ideas are always welcome.

Sisterhood MessageSisterhood is leading off the next two months at MBIEE! Our Pick of the Glitter fundraiser (see page 1), rescheduled for Sunday morn-ing, December 1, means great shopping be-fore Hanukkah ends and fun for you and your friends. Additionally you’ll be helping Sister-hood raise funds for MBIEE. Our thanks to Dr. Sharon Kasdin for this creative idea and for chairing the planning committee.

Too many of us have known people who died of a stroke and we did not recognize the warning signs. As a service to our community, Sisterhood will present a free stroke aware-ness panel on Sunday morning, January 12. Panelists will include neurologist Dr. Paul Katz of Abington Hospital and Toby Mazer, the founder of the Delaware Valley Stroke Council. Sisterhood member, Honey Zozofsky, director of the council, is arranging this event, which also is in line with the Wellness and Learning initiative of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism.

Have you heard that we’re planning our 2nd Annual Rosh Hodesh Tea Party? This afternoon retreat for women will be led by Rabbi Rayzel Raphael on Sunday, March 30, 4:00 P.M. (weather delay date: April 6). We’ll sing and learn and cele-brate the women in the book of Exodus, because of whose mer-it we were redeemed from Egypt. The celebration will include elegant catered sandwiches, petits fours, costumes and prizes.

Our Mah Jongg special interest group gathers on Mon-day evenings.

Bylaws

Greetings from the Bylaws Committee. Let me begin re-freshing your memory by repeating some of what I wrote two months ago.

Presently, this document has earned the recommenda-tion of the Executive Committee and, after minor revisions, the recommendation of the Board of Directors. The next step will be submission to a vote by the congregation for its ap-proval. That will occur at a special meeting of the congre-gation on the morning of December 15. After a sumptuous brunch, and a meeting of the board, the document will be available for your inspection. I like to think that the amicable character of the Board discussion partially resulted from a reading of article XVI, which would make it worth repeating:Parliamentary Practice: Code of Behavior

Meetings shall be conducted in accordance with the then-current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order.

MBIEE Men’s Club

Men’s Club MessageAs you are receiving this Shofar, Hanukkah is already upon us. Carving the turkey while lighting two candles is 1,5$*>$&#?*'4% &$% *$#% !'0#$2% @#% .'0% ;).%has a birthday in early December, I never liked Hanukkah falling early in the secular calendar because it leaves the rest of the year without something to look forward to. This double holiday does not begin a hibernation for the winter, however.

Gene Rifkind will be honored at a Federation of Jewish Men’s Club function at Temple Sinai on Sunday, December 15, as MBIEE Men’s Club Man of the Year. The dinner starts at 5:30 P.M. and it would be nice to see a large turnout from MBIEE to honor Gene, who has brought many interesting programs to MBIEE as Men’s Club immediate past president.

In February, just to preview my article in the next Shofar, we have been invited to participate at Beth Sholom in the FJMC World-Wide Wrap. No, this has nothing to do with music or rhyming. It is a program in which we wrap our !"#$$%& along with Jews throughout the world. Also planned in February is a Friday night dinner co-sponsored with Sisterhood.

“Speaking of your health and wealth” took place A.90170"% BC6%;*$)%!'&':*&5% 0D80"$#% #80&?*'4% &'(% &%100$%and greet that followed. The refreshments were free and so was the advice. I got a lot out of both!

So Happy “Thanksgivukkah” to all. I, again, will get a lot out of both!

weak, the corrupt into the hands of the upright, and the wick-ed into the hands of the just.

To this day, we see the tiny state of Israel performing miracles on a daily basis. Our Rabbi is fond of quoting Ben-Gurion’s quip, “In Israel, in order to be a realist you must be-lieve in miracles.” The victories of 1948, 1956, 1967, 1972, etc. are examples. In each, of these battles, Israel was out-manned, outgunned, and considered the underdog. In each, !"#$%&'(#)*+,"-#&'./"(#.'#*0.+.1#,'(#+"*0"21.'34#("0"'(.'34#and counting on each other. Collectively, they accepted over-whelming responsibility, and, with faith in a necessary out-come, they embraced the reality of ein berayrah (we have no choice). They heroically went off to battle, exhibited ex-traordinary courage, and took heavy fatalities and casualties. 56"7#2%'/("'1-7# -%%8"(# $%+!,+(#,'(#0&*6"(# 16"#"'9"-%0"#constantly asking, ”Why not?” instead of ”Why?”.

:"#2%'1.'&%&*-7#/'(#)*+,"-# -.361#7",+*#,6",(#.'#;"(.-cine, education, electronics, conservation, water develop-ment, and research. How does this happen? Can we conclude that realism requires the belief in miracles? The answer is rather straightforward and simple. We don’t need to.

Israel has openly embraced the traditional value of edu-cation and study. There is an opposing tradition of ain som-chim al haness (do not depend on miracles). We have learned long ago that it is shver tzoo zein a yid (it is tough to be a Jew). That explains why, like Avis, Jews try harder. We have to rely on our wits. We have to “Dress British, but think Yid-dish.” It is no wonder that Jews are “over-represented” in relation to the rest of the population in colleges, medicine, science, and professions. As long as we continue to inspire and support each other in Jewish communities, we will con-tinue to work and study harder than the rest of the popu-lation. We can alter the parameters, and accomplish more. Therefore, our results become natural and predictable and neither surprising nor miraculous. It is no wonder that, Israel has proportionately more newspapers and citizens with col-lege degrees than the rest of the world.

This year, let us celebrate Hanukkah, by connecting to .1*# "**"'2"# %$# %&+# -%'3# 1+,(.1.%'4# 2%'/("'1-7# 0&*6.'3# 16"#envelopes of study, accepting challenges, and seeking solu-tions. We have to continue to support each other in keeping our parental and community expectations high. In that way, Jewish accomplishment is our modern-day miracle.

I remember a conversation with our member Rina Pollack ahleha hashalom (may she rest in peace). We (.*2&**"(#16"#;,3'./2"'1#,22%;0-.*6;"'1*#%$#%&+#<+%16"+*#and sisters in the Israel Defense Forces. She noted that, now, they are issued all kinds of uniforms and modern weapons. In her day (1948), she said that she received only a postcard telling her to report in two weeks and to bring warm clothes.

Now is not the time to stop exercising our minds. What !"#*1,+14#%&+#0,+1'"+4#=>(4#!.--#6"-0#&*#/'.*6?#@*#-%'3#,*#!"#set our sights higher and keep working harder, we can con-tinue to achieve more. Sometimes, we even have to bring our own “warm clothes.” Let the rest of the world think we can perform miracles. We know how to do it!
