HOLIDAY GIFT SUGGESTION

Wouldn’t you love to give or get – or make a subtle suggestion to someone –tickets for the UWF presentation of “They’re Playing Our Song” at City Repertory Theatre on Saturday, January 11. It’s a wonderful romantic

musical that was such a big hit on Broadway. (See flyer page 3)

Greetings UWF Members,

The holiday season is upon us once again. Thanksgiving is always the holiday that receives the least attention, squeezed between Halloween, Christmas, and Hanukkah. Thanksgiving is barely mentioned and gets shelf time as fall décor for a few weeks.

I think Thanksgiving gives time to pause, reflect, and to give Thanks. Be grateful for each day, our families and friends, and for all we are able to provide to each other and Mother Earth. Giving, not receiving, is by far one of the greatest experiences that humans can share.

As we all approach the holiday season, remember to pause, enjoy, and give Thanks. As the world transi-tions into winter, we remember a new year is soon to be coming.

To brief you on the start to this year’s fundraising projects: In October we enjoyed an Afternoon of Jazz with Linda Cole; in November UWF participated in the Charity Day at Belk, and enjoyed fashion at Chez Jacqueline and food at La Creperie Kafe. January 11th will be our special performances of “They’re Playing Our Song” at the City Repertory Theatre, and February brings our annual Day of Games! March will find us Dancing the Night Away.

We hope you can attend the December 7th Holiday Luncheon. The entertainment will be different this year…. you’ll have to come to know what it is!

Our membership numbers have grown a little thanks to the hard work of our Membership VPs and the community outreach at the Belk sale and at First Fridays in Flagler Beach. We want to keep getting the message out about our organization and our mission to as many people as possible.

Our interest groups are active and all the information you need and the opportunities to meet new members each month are in this Wave.

We want to wish you and your families a very Merry and Blessed Holiday season and safe travels.

Yours in Service,

Janice and Pat

From the Presidents Pat Cotton and Janice Nickol

December’s Guest Speaker: Cheryl Floyd Cheryl is a southern girl with her early traditions steeped in her Cajun Louisiana roots. It was there she fell in love with story and the lyrical power of language which permeates her storytelling style. Her story audiences range from elementary children to senior adults. She is just as comfortable on stage at a festival as she is in a classroom or in living rooms and front porches during her fun Story Supper Concerts. Cheryl’s storytelling programs and workshops help others to incorporate story into their personal or business lives; as well as providing entertainment and inspiration. Whether she is offering a program for children or adults, Cheryl combines her talents as a former teacher, publisher, editor and storyteller with her love of people and life.

If you have any changes to your contact information (name, address, telephone number, or email) please inform Donna Daly Boggs at [email protected].

Also, if you know anyone interested in joining UWF, invite her to accompany you to a general meeting or as a guest to one our events.

We are very happy to welcome two members this month:

Robin Hall

Robin was born in South Dakota and raised in the Black Hills. When in high school, she and her family moved to Minneapolis, MN and she lived there until she completed her BS in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota. Professional opportunities took her to Arizona where she completed her MA in Counseling, MA in Educational Admin-istration and doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. She served as a College Vice President for Student Services before moving to Lake City, Florida. Robin continued working in higher education in Florida until her retire-ment. During that time, she also served in leadership positions on numerous boards to include the arts, social services, and health care. She understands the importance of giving back to her local community.

Robin and her husband Chuck moved full-time to Flagler Beach in 2016. In addition to volunteerism, she enjoys reading, traveling, genealogy, and walking on the beach.

Brenda Boban

Brenda was born in San Francisco, then moved to Somerville, New Jersey where she finished her secondary education. She received her BA in Education at College of Emporia in Kansas, then her MA in Curriculum Development and Psychology from Kean University in Union, New Jersey. Brenda taught middle school and elementary for 41 years. She moved to Palm Coast in 2009 with her late husband. She continues to work part-time as a caregiver and is a licensed cosmetologist. Brenda loves to play tennis and go hiking.

Please greet Robin and Brenda warmly when you see them. We have another new member, Pat Driscoll, who joined at the general meeting November 16th. More to follow about her in the next Wave!

On Halloween, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) received a call on the Abuse Hotline stating that a 14-year-old was contemplating suicide due to her living conditions and alleged physical and emotional abuse by her mother. The girl also stated that she was being homeschooled, but was not being taught anything. She alleged that she was being used as a full-time caregiver for her four younger siblings and several animals. When FCSO went to the home, they found the yard to be in total disarray, with trash strewn everywhere. The inside of the home was deplorable, with animal feces in every room, rotting food, insects, no edible food in the refrigerator, and no running water (causing the children to be unable to bathe without going to Bull Creek Fish Camp and no workable toilets). Both parents were arrested for five counts each of child neglect. The FCSO, along with the Department of Children and Families (DCF), removed the five children, who are currently being cared for in foster homes, with the girls in one home and the boys in another under the watch of DCF and the Community Partnership for Children (CPC). CPC is working on a plan to place all the siblings together. The Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches is holding five vacancies for them, but the State has the final decision as to what will occur. The UWF Board voted at their last meeting to donate $1000 from the Community Assistance line in the budget to a fund established to help these children. In addition to money, donations are also being accepted for the following: New or gently-used clothing, underwear, socks, shoes

While not mentioned by the FCSO or DCF, the children would probably enjoy some toys or games, especially with the holidays fast approaching

The children are a:

• 14-year-old girl, size 14/16, shoe size 7

• 12-year-old girl, size 14/16, shoe size 6½

• 9-year-old boy, size 10/12, shoe size unknown

• 8-year-old girl, size 7/8, shoe size unknown

• 6-year-old boy, size 7/8, shoe size unknown If you are interested in donating to these children, please bring your donations to the December 7th UWF luncheon meeting and we will ensure that the donations are brought to the collection site designated for this purpose.

We thought that we would meet for lunch in a restaurant where we could discuss whichever book each member decides to read. More to come on this.

Any member who plans to attend a meeting should notify the hostess for that month several days prior to enable her to know how many participants will be present and have time to prepare.

December’s Book Selection: Killers of the Flower Moon

From David Grann, the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Lost City of Z, a twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. An-other was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom

White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native Ameri-can agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

Donations Needed for January Fundraiser Help us keep expenses to a minimum — please donate a bottle of wine (red or white) for the fundraiser, They’re Playing Our Song to be held at the City Repertory Theatre on Satur-day, January 11. There will be two performances of this crowd favorite: a matinee at 2:00 PM and an evening show at 7:30 PM. The doors will open one hour prior to each perfor-mance. We will be providing appetizers and desserts before the show and at intermission.

Again this year, there will be a Silent Auction. Some items that we have already received for the Silent Auction are a dinner for eight, and an RCI excursion (you will have the choice of location and time based on their catalog). We are hoping to offer culinary items, pretty dishes and glasses, prepared baskets (we ’ll take empty baskets as well), centerpieces, jewelry and purses to round out our culinary and travel theme. Do you have a favorite restaurant or salon that would provide us with a gift card? How about using the reward points you accumulate during your holiday shopping and use them to purchase a gift to donate?

Please bring your donations to the December general meeting. If you have questions or need a pick up, contact Linda Jaeger at 631-875-3799 or [email protected].

Tickets are on sale now. Contact Louel Larkin to make your reservation (see page 3 flyer). Bring a friend, your spouse, a family member. This looks to be a most enjoyable event based on the book by Neil Simon with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carol Bayer Sager.

The University Women of Flagler (UWF) was founded in June 2006. The purpose of UWF is to unite graduates of regionally accredited educational institutions in order to promote equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth, and development of opportunities for women and girls in the Flagler County area. UWF promotes positive societal change in the community; participates in the development and promotion of policies and programs through study, action, and public policy advo-cacy in areas related to its purpose, including community, cultural interests, and the maintenance of high standards in education; and maintains a fund for the purpose of rendering assistance, giving support, and providing funds for litigation to Flagler County area women whose civil liberties are threatened, infringed, or violated.

The Wave is the official newsletter of the University Women of Flagler.
