MAMBALAMTIMES

Chennai needs a federation of flat owners’ associationsSir, The recent collapse of a multi storeyed apartment complex

under construction in Mugalivakam is a glaring example of the realestate affairs of the city and the State Govt. apathy in regulating thesame. With ever increasing aspiration of citizens from all walks of lifeto own flats, building promoters are queuing up by the mile with tallpromises and exotic offers. The buyers are facing untold difficultieslike one-sided agreements, astronomical prices, unprecedented de-lays in delivery, retaining of full maintenance against the will of theflat owners, sale of parking and common areas and bungling of FSI.There are umpteen cases of unauthorized/ unapproved constructionswherein the buyer after ownership is forced to face the wrath of thegovt. officials and pay huge sums in regularizing them. There arealready thousands of flats in Chennai having their own associations(either registered or un-registered). Time has now come to form afederation to unite them all under one umbrella to take effectiveaction for the safety of the flat owners/buyers, take their issues to theconcerned civic authorities and to get the undertakings of thepromoters fulfilled within a reasonable time-limit.

I am prepared to start this movement of promoting such a federa-tion. I appeal to the senior members of Resident Associations tocontact me in this regard. – D. Appeal for installing speed breakers on Mambalam HighRoad and Station Road

Sir, There is an immediate need of speed breakers on MambalamHigh Road and Station Road (West Mambalam) to slow down the

traffic. Ever since Kodambakkam Bridge wasclosed for repairs, traffic has increased onboth these roads and vehicles speed throughwith scant respect for pedestrians who wishto cross the roads. It has especially becometough and risky for schoolchildren and a num-ber of elderly persons who come to drop themoff at school. We appeal to the Corporationofficials to immediately install speed break-ers on these roads. – Udaya Bhaskar (TVSFlats, Chari Street, T. Nagar), R.Swaminathan (18/4, Station Road, WestMambalam)

JUDICIAL CORRUPTIONNidhi Razdan of NDTV was shushed by the indomitable Katju,

the reigning Chairman of Press Council of India, when shepersisted in wondering why he had not come out with the exposeregarding another judge who, while officiating in the MadrasHigh Court, had been found to be corrupt by a triumvirate of theSupreme Court collegium. From what he said, it appeared thatnot only was the unnamed corrupt judge confirmed by thecollegium, but he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh HighCourt as a permanent judge.

Katju named three former Chief Justices of the Supreme Courtwho were privy to the collegium’s action. Whatever Nidhi thinks, the dudgeon of Katju is a healthy sign that the judiciary, from thesmallest to the supreme, is the only guarantor of democracy, which is based on truth, especially in the judicial fora which isapolitical. If justice is marketable, you may as well include theseinstitutions in the charade of Stock Exchange dealings.

I had appeared before Katju when he was Chief Justice ofMadras High Court. He radiated an aura of awe, and flippancywas definitely out of his court. Taciturn and non-rambling, hemade the lawyers try to be precise, in order to stretch the judicialtime to cover more cases. Verbiage was anathema to him, forprecision is lost in the quagmire of rambling thoughts! With hiselevation to the Supreme Court, the pace of disposals in the FirstCourt of Madras High Court must have dwindled, as identifyingthe crux and tackling it returned to their normal, niggardly level!

Time, the great reliever, makes us remember the good, the badand the ugly dispassionately so that, in retrospect, we can skimover it. Wherefore, Katju stands out as a unique judge who, during his captaincy in the Madras High Court, was a realskipper who whacked the loose ones and smashed the fast onesall around. Nidhi got a sixer smash for trying to dig too much!

Pathayatra to Tirumala temple in OctoberBy Our Staff Reporter

Tirumala Tirupathi Patha-yathirai Trust (4/13, AparanaApartments, BalakrishnaMudali Street, West Mam-balam) has organized a patha-yatra to Tirumala Venkates-wara Temple (Tirupathi) fromSri Sankara Mutt Goshala(West Mambalam) leaving on

G. RAMANATHAN - 10‘Ratnakumar’, P.U. Chinnappa - P. Bhanumathi starrer

with music by G. Ramanathan and another Tamil MusicCharmer C. R. Subburaman (more about him later), was builtaround the theme that a king might become a pauper and abeggar might be crowned as king. Ratnakumar (Chinnappa),a beggar singing for alms, sleeps in a haunted cave at night. Hehears mysterious words and moves to a nearby hut where hemeets a female beggar (Bhanumathi) Bhagavathi. They livetogether, singing and dancing in the streets, make money andmarry.

Meanwhile, a king celebrates his daughter’s (Malathi) birth-day at the palace where the couple arrive to perform.Ratnakumar falls in love with the princess and decides to winher hand. A magic ring helps him fulfil his desire and he forgetshis loving wife. After many crises, the couple reunite.

The latter-day cult figure and icon of Indian Cinema, M. G.Ramachandran, played a minor role in the movie and his nameappeared in the credits as ‘Ramachandar’. The film also hadveteran actor K. P. Kesavan and singer-cum-actor, known as‘Cinema Naradar’, Nagercoil K. Mahadevan.

N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, and T. S. Durairaj providedthe comedy element.

The film was directed by the well-known duo Krishnan-Panjuand the latter-day noted multilingual filmmaker A. Bhim Singhworked as their assistant. G. Ramanathan and C. R.Subburaman composed the music. Some of the songs such as‘Nee dayai’, ‘Varattum vandhaal’ (Bhanumathi), ‘Geli miga’(Chinnappa) and ‘Ennadi indha ullasam’ (Malathi) becamepopular. The lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan and ‘Surabhi’.

The film had dance sequences choreographed by VedanthamRaghavaiah and Vempatti Satyam.

Despite the talented stars, melodious music and good com-edy the film did not fare well at the box office.

The next film that uplifted Ramanathan’s reputation touch-ing the skies with the sun shining brightly on him was the T. R.Sundaram-Modern Theatres super hit, ‘Manthirikumari’ (1950).

‘Manthirikumari’ was not only a box-office hit but alsocreated Tamil film history. Written by one of the brilliantwriters of the country, Mu. Karunanidhi, it had political under-tones. His dialogue was full of punch, razor-sharp and allitera-tively alluring. Karunanidhi was then progressing well in mov-ies as well as in politics. Many of his lines were repeated by thecommoners for years.

This movie had M. G. Ramachandran, M. N. Nambiar,Madhuri Devi, G. Sakunthala, and S. A. Natarajan in the mainroles. The newcomer, an import from Tamil theatre, Natarajan(it was his second film) stole the show with his scintillatingperformance (even overshadowing Nambiar) as the king’sguru’s son and a bandit by night!. His distinctive delivery ofKarunanidhi’s lines made him a star.

Music was also a major plus point of the movie. One of themany hit songs “Vaaraai…..nee…Vaaraai”, a duet sung byTiruchi Loganathan and Jikki, found its deserved place in thegalaxy of immortal melodies of Tamil Cinema. According tocritics, this song from ‘Manthirikumari’ is G. Ramanathan’sbest movie music composition!

The latter half of the song was shot in and around the famous‘Lady’s Seat’ in the Yercaud Hills, which is today a touristattraction. However, back in 1949-1950, it was all mountain, jungle, rocks and shrubs and one had to climb up the hard waylike mountain-climbers. Ellis R. Dungan, the director, usedthree cameras (rare in those days) to shoot this song and tookconsiderable risks to his life and limb. However, all this hardwork helped him reap rich dividends, when the song became asuper hit.

When the film was in the post-production stage, problemsarose in Dungan’s personal life, which necessitated his depar-ture from India to the U.S. The Modern Theaters’ boss T. R.Sundaram took over the direction and completed the movie.Hence, both their names appear in the credit titles.

Another duet by the same singers (Loganathan and Jikki)‘Ulavum thendral kaatriniley, filmed on the lovers MadhuriDevi and Natarajan going around boating was shot on YercaudLake, and became a hit too. Another solo song, ‘Aahahavaazhviley (by M. L. Vasanthakumari) filmed on G. Sakunthalain her first movie feature role with M.G. Ramachandran, alsobecame popular.

‘Manthirikumari is often screened in theatres and on televi-sion, and sustains interest even after 60-plus years. Its strongpolitical slant made it a cult film.

With the success of this film, G. Ramanathan was nowconsidered deservedly as a top Tamil movie music charmer ofthat day and era…
