About 5 acres

LocationLyon House is situated in the village of Sherfield English about 5 miles from Romsey. The village has a shop with a post office, pub, church, garage and recreational ground. Romsey provides for most day to day needs, which include a Waitrose, whilst the cathedral cities of both Salisbury and Winchester provide excellent shopping, restaurants and cultural amenities.

There are a number of excellent schools in the area; independent prep schools include Farleigh, Pilgrims, Chaffyn Grove and Leaden Hall. Public schools include Winchester College, St Swithuns, Godolphin and Marlborough College. Salisbury has also retained its grammar schools for both boys and girls; Bishop Wordsworth for Boys and South Wilts for Girls.

The local surrounding countryside provides an array of sporting amenities. There is fishing on some of the country’s renowned chalk streams including the Test. There is fine pheasant and partridge shooting and golf available locally. The area provides ample scope for walking and riding both locally and also in the New Forest. In addition there is sailing and other water sports on the South coast and Solent.

Road and rail links from Lyon House are excellent with a regular service to London Waterloo from Winchester (from 60 minutes). Access to the M3 and A303 provide fast links to London, the M25 which connects to Heathrow, and the West Country. Southampton airport is approximately 18 miles.

Property Lyon House is believed to have been built in the 1850s of red brick elevations under a slate roof. The house is full of period features that you would expect from a property of its age including numerous fireplaces and well-proportioned rooms with high ceilings. With large windows the accommodation is very light and makes the most of the wonderful views over the gardens.

All the principal rooms are located off the wide hallway. The drawing room has a large bay window, wooden floors, ceiling rose and a jet master fire with marble surround. The dining room is also a good size, again with a fireplace and wooden floors, and has doors opening into the Orangery. The kitchen/breakfast room overlooks the garden and has a good range of fitted wooden cupboards with granite work tops and a central island. Doors also give access to the Orangery, an oak framed extension, with French doors onto the formal gardens. There is also a sitting room, boot room and cloakroom.

On the first floor is a spacious master bedroom with a good range of fitted wardrobes and a dressing area. There are four further bedrooms (one with an ensuite bathroom) and a family bathroom.

OutsideA shingle drive leads to the front of the house with space for plenty of parking and a turning circle. To the side of the house are the old stables which now consists of two garages and store with a large room above. Across the courtyard is a self-contained annexe with ensuite shower room.

The beautiful gardens are an impressive part of the property. Located to the side and behind the house, they are mostly laid to lawn. Adjacent to the house is a terrace with pergola and vines growing over. Formal gardens with arches of roses are behind the Orangery. The remainder of the garden is laid to lawn interspersed with mature trees and numerous bulbs in the spring. The current owners have created a large pond with footpaths meandering into the woodland which has a stream running though. There is also a hard surface tennis court with a store adjacent and a paddock with separate vehicle access.
