Greetings, Brisbane Residents! In my column last month, I covered the project that has been on everyone’s minds – the Brisbane Baylands. Specifically, I mentioned how draft General Plan Amendment language and November 2018 ballot language would be brought to the City Council for review at the July 12th Public Hearing for the Brisbane Baylands. As one would expect, there were many community members in attendance at that meeting to voice their opinions as well as their concerns about the project. Unfortunately, many needed to leave before

area, and have medical and dental coverage and a retirement plan. We want our employees to stay. John and I continue to practice his values while managing the business. When we retire, we too, will pass the leadership to our employees. In 1989, I started as an apprentice, worked hard and learned the business. Today, I am responsible for bidding and project management and personnel management. John is responsible for field operations and project management. We are a good team.”

“Our management style and size of our company ensures that we are mobile and can successfully manage our clients’ needs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.” Continuing, “for 30 years we have focused on our long-standing customers. Our priority is our repeat clients. We stand by our work, paying attention to detail and communication. We believe in transparency. Our workers live in the

bay area and work in the field, so it is important that we all know the individual job requirements and status of each project. To ensure that we provide a quality product we use project management tools that monitor each step of the job with instantaneous communication to all involved, i.e., from the architect to the craftsperson, to the office staff, plumbers, electricians, and clients.”

I asked Dan why Lyon Medical Construction located their business in Brisbane. He replied, “Location.” Continuing, “we are in the perfect center of the bay area close to the freeways and SFO airport. Being here we can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of San Bruno Mountain. The weather is sunny, and it is quiet.”

When renovating, building and repairing medical buildings Lyon Medical Construction adheres to the vision of the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSPOD), i.e., ‘provide access to safe, quality healthcare environments that meet California’s dynamic and diverse needs’. I learned while speaking to Dan that OSPOD monitors the construction, renovation, and seismic safety of hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. “Both schools and medical facilities are built to a high standard for earthquake and fire catastrophes,” He continued, “we take pride in constructing high quality facilities, while being conscious of our energy usage. Protecting the earth’s limited resources is important to us.”

I asked Dan to speak on one of LMC challenges. He passionately spoke about the shortage of construction tradespeople. “Gone are the days when parents would tinker on their cars in the backyard, and our schools are not providing young people with the experience and joy of woodshop, metal work, welding, building, or auto mechanics. Young people are not being exposed to the much-needed fields of working with their hands, problem solving and creating a much-needed products,” he ended, “They aren’t learning about handiwork and don’t have the opportunity of finding out that what they may want to be is a valuable tradesperson.”

Lyon Medical Construction, Inc. is located at 100 North Hill Drive #52, Brisbane, CA 94005. They can be reached by phone 415-508-1970, fax 415-508-1971 and website https://lyonmc.com. Stop by and say hi.

we got to the part where staff and the EIR consultant answered their questions. The good thing is, you can look back at the meeting video, which also gives a good overview of how we got here, addressed in the second video (at approximately 8:52). To view the draft legislation that never got introduced, but was referenced in the video, please visit this page on the City’s website: www.brisbaneca.org/a-letter-from-mayor-clarke-conway. To play back the meeting video, visit: www.brisbaneca.org/city-government/meetings. Scroll down to the meeting video of July 12th; the part where questions are addressed can also be found in the second video. The Council did not provide any changes to the draft General Plan Amendment or November 2018 ballot language, so it can be expected that the same drafts will be brought back to us at the July 19th Public Hearing portion of the meeting. See the agenda for that meeting here: www.brisbaneca.org/city-council-meeting-07-19-2018.

HIGH SCHOOL BUS ROUTES

Another important t o p i c f o r m a n y Brisbane residents and

one which I’ve covered previously in this column has been the High School Bus. I am happy to report that final routes for the upcoming 2018-19 school year were finalized in early July and shared by SamTrans with the Brisbane parents working group. This group was largely spearheaded by Brisbane resident Alina Zavodnik, who began encouraging other Brisbane parents to get involved by attending meetings and brainstorming alternatives with City staff and myself, which they started doing in late 2017. Seeing that the most likely scenario for safely transporting Brisbane & Southern Hills high school students to and from their homes and high school would be via existing SamTrans routes, the group recently began meeting with SamTrans on possible route

modifications. The following determinations were made for how best to integrate SamTrans service to and from Brisbane to the students’ high schools.

Route 24 | Will Now Run from Brisbane to Jefferson, Westmoor, Summit Shasta High Schools

Route 24 currently serves Jefferson and Westmoor High School students. Route 24 will extend to Summit Shasta and the route schedule will be modified to accommodate the school bell times for all three high schools. In the morning, the Route 24 will start at Brisbane, departing 7:05am, and end at Shasta High School at 7:52am. In the afternoon, the Route 24 will pick up students at Westmoor High School first at 3:25pm, then go to Shasta High School at 3:40pm, Jefferson High School at 3:48pm, and arriving in Brisbane at 4:15pm. The bus stop for Summit Shasta is located at Serramonte Blvd. & Highway 1. The new service will be implemented in August 2018 as a 1-year pilot program, during which the route will be evaluated for continued inclusion in the SamTrans service plan

Route 49 | Extending Service to Brisbane for Students going to Oceana and Terra Nova High Schools

Presently, Route 49 operates via San Bruno BART, Sneath Ln., Allen Dr., Skyline Blvd., Sharp Park, Hwy 1, Crespi Dr. into Terra Nova High School. In August 2018, Route 49 will start in Brisbane, departing 6:48am from Old County Rd. & San Francisco Ave., go through San Bruno Ave. and Sneath Lane, Skyline College, Manor Drive, arriving at Oceana High School at 7:32am, and ending at Terra Nova High School at 7:45am. The reverse trip in the afternoon will follow the same pattern, departing Terra Nova at 3:10pm, Oceana at 3:27pm, and arriving in Brisbane at 4:11pm. The new service will be implemented in August 2018 as a 1-year pilot program,

THINK BRISBANE — KEEP OUR ECONOMY STRONG!

PRESIDENT’S Message

LIFE SCIENCES…AND PANCAKES! …BY: MITCH BULL, Brisbane Chamber President and CEO, [email protected], 415-467-7283

Summer is the season when schools are in recess and students are trying to put last year behind them before they get serious about the new school year ahead. For businesses there is no “off season” as it is important to continually reach out to potential customers and contacts to grow your businesses. Our MultiChamber Expo is fast approaching and tables are booking up. Get in touch with us if you want to be part of this fun and lively event!

WELCOME TO SEVERAL NEW COMPANIES AND PEOPLE… The business landscape continues to evolve we welcome new members to our local business

community. Sangamo Pharmaceuticals is currently remodeling the former Walmart.com building on Sierra Point as their new corporate headquarters. They have had a formal groundbreaking and are aiming to move corporate staff into this new facility by the end of 2018. Ultragenyx Pharmaceuticals are continuing to expand their operations at their sierra point location and are increasing the number of staff in that office. They are not alone in the biotech arena, as Aimmune has opened an office on Marina Blvd., and is growing their business. Other new biotech companies have located into the Brisbane Technology Park. Harpoon Therapeutics and Unity Biotechnology are relatively new neighbors to the long-established Cutera and CareDx.

Life Sciences are also at the forefront of future development at Sierra Point. HCP Partners is currently doing their site work for a new biotech campus located adjacent to the DoubleTree Hotel. This project will house life science companies in the future once completed. In another development, LifeSciences planning and development company Phase 3 have bought the “black” building at the entrance to Sierra Point, and are near closing on the Opus Development property on the Northwest corner of the point. They are working through the planning process for potential new buildings on that site.

On the hotel side, please welcome a new management team to the Homewood Suites. Rhodora Escobar and Reka Penner have recently been brought on board by the Sage hospitality group as the General Manager and the Director of Sales respectively for the Homewood Suites by Hilton on Sierra Point. We welcome them to the community and compliment them on the hotel’s continuing high standards.

LOSING SIGHTBY: FREDDY BEAMAN, Brisbane Chamber Board Member, Vice President, City National Bank, [email protected], 415-272-7223

Have you ever wondered where you will be in 10 years or what will the world look like and how technology will change? I often worry that we are losing our human touch and connection with each other. I’ve been in the financial industry for the past 18 years and I often talk about financial check-ups and putting away enough savings, but I never talk about mental health. Like everyone, I assume we are all doing ok.

Mental Health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Due to past and recent tragedies in the news, know the early warning signs. Be supportive the next time you see a friend or family member that may be battling with a mental disorder. Help is available at www.mentalhealth.gov and these problems can get better. We all have something to offer and giving support might prevent someone from going down a path of no return.

NEW BRISBANE LIBRARY Lastly, I want to end on a project that has

been in the works for the past 18 years: the New Brisbane L i b r a r y. On S a t u r d a y , July 14th, a smal l crowd was t rea ted to poetry read by the current

San Mateo County Poet Laureate Lisa Rosenberg, followed by acknowledgements from myself, County Supervisor David Canepa, Friends of the Brisbane Library (FOBL) Co-Presidents Wendy Towle and Dawn David, and last but not least, Library JPA Board Member and Brisbane Councilmember Karen Cunningham. All five of us Brisbane City Councilmembers, Supervisor Canepa, Brisbane City Manager Clay Holstine, and the newest (and youngest) FOBL member, Chaya-Bella David, then got down to business...officially breaking ground for the New Brisbane Library! Thank you to San Mateo County Libraries, the Brisbane Library, and the County of San Mateo for partnering with us to make the Groundbreaking Ceremony such a success (a joint press release can be found here: https://conta.cc/2Jnk36h). Brisbane’s new Library is scheduled to open in time for the 2019-20 school year. I can’t wait for the Grand Opening!

Bruno Mountain Watch. The gazebo setup courtesy of Brite Event Rentals houses exhibitions by innovative sponsors such as Sunset Scavenger, cool

vendors such as McDermott Guitars and Mr. California, and information stations from participants including the Brisbane Library. A massive sound system provided by Brisbane newcomers PSAV Presentation Services is set up on an amazing stage in the southwest corner, making the mountain an awesome natural backdrop to a diverse range of performances. A second stage and lounge resides at the opposite end.

The S ta r C i t y Mus ic Festival is a family affair. Parking and children under ten get in free, and kids can release oodles of energy in bodacious bounce houses and on the modern playground.

The Lions Club will serve barbeque, and a variety of food trucks ensure there’s something for every member of the family. Several bars serve craft beers by South SF’s 47 Hills Brewing Company.

Tiered levels of tax-deductible sponsorship are still available to businesses, and many vendor spots are open. Volunteers needed. Send an email to [email protected]. Lineup, tickets, photos, and social links can be found at: www.starcityfest.com.

older population and individuals with disabilities are often overlooked.

But not here in San Mateo County. As the president of the Health Plan of San Mateo, we recognize the need for these skilled-nursing beds for patients who need occupational and physical therapy, speech pathology services or special care.

The Health Plan of San Mateo contributed $611,000 to the 39-bed facility with the approval of the San Mateo County Health Commission. The county has lost about 400 skilled nursing beds in recent years and many patients in critical need of care have to seek it out of the county.

This investment in the community will keep those who need these skilled-nursing beds closer to home near the people who love and care for them the most.

Seton plays a critical role in the health outcomes for north county residents and is also Daly City’s largest employer. I was born in that hospital as I imagine many Crown Colony residents were. It first opened in 1893 as Mary’s Help Hospital and it is part of the fabric of our community and helps us lead healthier lives.

In fact, Seton Medical Center received in May the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.”

The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

I’m proud of my hometown hospital and the doctors, nurses and staff who provide exceptional care to my family and my constituents.

TAXES IN SUMMER??BY: CURTIS ROE, Treasurer and Board Member Brisbane Chamber of Commerce, CPA, Director - Finance, Purcell Murray, [email protected]

Welcome to August 2018. It’s not December or April so you probably aren’t thinking about income tax, but maybe you should. There were some changes this year. Now is a good time to give them consideration, it might prevent a financial surprise when April 2019 does arrive.

The standard deduction amounts will increase to $12,000 for individuals, $18,000 for heads of households, and $24,000 for married couples filing jointly.

There are a couple of big changes to allowable deductions; state and local tax and home mortgage interest. If you don’t itemize your deductions on your tax return, this doesn’t matter. If you do, this might matter a lot. The total allowable deduction for all state, local sales, income, and property tax is capped at $10,000 for married filing jointly.

Interestingly, the maximum interest deduction that can be taken is limited to a loan amount not to exceed $750,000. The good news is if the home was purchased before December 15, 2017, the maximum is $1,000,000. But considering the price of homes in the Bay Area, this might have a big impact on folks. It seems odd that they did not consider the rate of interest instead of just the amount borrowed when creating this rule.

There are changes to tax rates as well and some may pay less tax this year. What is one to do? When it comes to finance and taxes, it is hard to argue against taking a conservative position. That is to say, keep some reserve on hand to avoid a last minute surprise in the event of an unforeseen tax liability. It is always easier to spend money than it is to save it, but when was the last time you were upset about having too much saved?

I also found a quick estimated tax calculator at www.moneyhelpcenter.com that might help.
