WITH RED CARPETS ROLLED OUT all overtown, Clarins’ team came to LA to make therounds. However, instead of setting up a pop-upbeauty studio at a gifting lounge to showcase theirlatest goods as they had in past years, they optedfor a more intimate and civilized way to introducetheir various audiences to the new products.

Beauty editors and journalists were treated to ahearty brunch at the historic Sunset Tower Hotel.Artistic arrangements of product testers replacedflower arrangements, flanked with candle votiveholders filled with make-up removal pads. Freshcroissants and muffins that would normallydisappear went untouched before main coursesarrived.

In fact, main plates sat uneaten for a goodtwenty minutes, thanks to the fact that theapproachable spokes-make-up artist Pati Dubroffheld court, giving a play by play of what elementsof the spring 2011 collection she used on four ofher favourite A-list clients (Sheryl Crow, JulianneMoore, Naomi Watts and Kate Bosworth) withvery different colouring and skin types.

Though it honestly cannot be that difficult tomake these four naturally attractive women all themore gorgeous, what actually resonated was theversatility of the products. Rather than offerscreaming neon hues or cutesy Easter coloursnormally found this time of year, the mosaic-styleBlush Prodige and NeoPastels eye shadowcompacts were neutral and bordering onseasonless—in the best way imaginable. Same wentfor the Rouge Hydra Nude Smoothing Creamlipstick, which boasts more of a “skin carecomponent” than other lipsticks on the market—making it just as good for winter as for summer.Like the compacts, anybody with any skin tone canpull off the five lip colours available.

However, the products that generated the mostexcitement among this ladies-who-breakfast crowdwere the Instant Smooth Line CorrectingConcentrate and Smooth Perfecting Touch primer,which worked instantly, even on the backs of our

hands, thanks to Clarins’ Acacia Micro-Pearltechnology and infusion of vitamin E. Even if oneis a sceptic of “secret ingredients”, it does providea nice canvas for colour and base.

Dubroff swears the Instant Smooth LineCorrecting Concentrate, with its handy pen tip,became a fast favourite of Barbara Streisand inremedying her ongoing issue with the two faces inher mirror (one we can all relate to—before andafter applying make-up). The portability of theInstant Smooth Line Correcting Concentrate alsomakes it ideal for business travellers, so you reallycould put your best face forward when you headfor the boardroom direct from the airport.

Also new to the line are sunscreens for face andbody with their SPF 50 power from a variety ofplant extracts (senna, pea, plane tree, olive andbaobab) among other things, and glam newpackaging for the signature Clarins beauty oilsDubroff and the seemingly ageless Moore swearby. Though the press did not get oils in theirgo-kits, we did get a generous tub of anotherClarins staple—the Extra Firming Body Cream. •
