About the author

Linnae Salvati has been teaching high school Span-ish since 2011. She holds a masters degree in Spanish Linguistics from New Mexico State University as well as two undergraduate degrees from Oregon State University. In addition to being a proud Ford Family Scholarship Alumni, she received the honor of being selected as a participant in the Fulbright Teachers for Global Class-rooms Program. Miré la pista1. Estaba lloviendo. No me gustaba la lluvia. Aquí siempre llueve mucho en marzo.

No me gustaba la lluvia, pero me gustaba lo que sig-nificaba: participar en atletismo2. El atletismo era mi ac-tividad favorita. Correr era mi pasión. Me gustaba correr todos los días, en la lluvia o en el sol.

El atletismo era muy importante para mí. Era una parte muy importante de mi pasado; era una parte muy importante de mi presente. Pero también era una parte muy importante de mi futuro. Quería correr en la univer-sidad.

Miraba la lluvia y pensaba en mi futuro. Me puse los zapatos. Me sentía nervioso y emocionado. Mi mejor amigo, Santiago, llegó y se sentó a mi lado.

– ¡Hola, Lucho! ¿Estás listo para la carrera? –me preguntó.

– Totalmente –le dije.

– Escuché que unos cazatalentos3 de universida-des están aquí hoy –me dijo Santiago.

– ¡Perfecto! –le dije sonriendo–. Estoy listo. Creo que tengo la posibilidad de ganar la carrera este año. ¿Estás listo?

– ¡Claro que estoy listo! –me respondió San-tiago–. Pero, ¡te voy a ganar4 en la carrera!

– ¡Claro que no! Yo te voy a ganar –le respondí, un poco más irritado de lo que quería aceptar.

Santiago era mi mejor amigo, era como mi her-mano, pero era más rápido que yo. Siempre me ganaba.

– Bueno, entonces vamos a ver quién es más rá-pido –me dijo Santiago sonriendo. A Santiago le gustaba la competencia entre nosotros, pero más que nada, a Santiago le gustaba ganar. Siempre ganaba.

Santiago y yo corríamos en la misma carrera. Corrí-amos la milla. Bueno, se llamaba «la milla», pero en re-alidad eran 100 metros menos que una milla; eran 1.500 metros.

Santiago siempre era más rápido que yo. Pero este era mi año… ¡Tenía que ser mi año! Mi futuro dependía en ganar la carrera.

Correr en la universidad era mi sueño y el de San-tiago. Era nuestro sueño representar a la misma universi-dad, juntos como siempre. Siempre corríamos juntos, y queríamos continuar corriendo juntos en la universidad. Pero primero teníamos que impresionar a los cazatalen-tos. Por eso, me sentía nervioso y emocionado. Estaba listo para demostrar a los cazatalentos que podía com-petir en la universidad.

Capítulo 1

Hoy era la primera carrera de la temporada. La ca-rrera de hoy iba a ser una buena indicación de nuestras posibilidades de competir en la universidad. Nervioso, esperaba nuestra carrera.

Entonces, llegó la hora de nuestra carrera. Santiago y yo caminamos hacia la pista. Formamos una línea en la pista con los otros atletas, todos listos para la carrera.

– En sus marcas…, listos...

Sentía los músculos tensos, listos. Santiago estaba a mi lado, como siempre. Lo miré y pensé: «Hoy te voy a ganar. Solo por una vez te quiero ganar...».

Entonces escuché el disparo5 y todos salimos co-rriendo. La carrera era difícil. Un poco menos de cuatro vueltas por la pista en cuatro minutos si eras muy bueno. Santiago y yo éramos muy buenos. El año pasado, yo había corrido la carrera en 4:12, Santiago la había co-rrido en 4:10. Este año yo quería correr la carrera en menos de cuatro minutos.

Después de tres vueltas por la pista, Santiago y yo éramos los primeros. Éramos más rápidos que los otros atletas. Corríamos juntos.

Empezamos a correr más rápido. Nos faltaban6 300 metros…, 200 metros…, 100 metros. Santiago empezó a correr más rápido que yo. 50, 40, 30...

Intenté acelerar más, pero no pude. Él cruzó la línea unos 10 metros antes que yo. Él me había ganado otra vez.

Crucé la línea y miré mi tiempo: cuatro minutos y dos segundos.

Por un momento, sentí frustración e irritación con Santiago. Él siempre era mejor que yo, pero lentamente mi irritación se evaporó. Yo no había ganado, pero estaba feliz con mi tiempo. ¡Corrí 10 segundos más rápido que antes! Abracé a Santiago.

– ¡Qué carrera! –le dije sonriendo–. Pensé que te iba a ganar, pero no. ¡Corriste increíblemente!

– Tú también corriste increíblemente –me dijo sonriendo–. Mira tu tiempo.

– Sí, es mi récord personal.

Entonces, el cazatalentos se nos acercó.

– Hola –nos dijo–. Corrieron muy bien. Me gus-taría ofrecerles la oportunidad de correr para nuestra universidad. ¿Están interesados?

Santiago y yo nos miramos emocionados.

– ¡Claro7! –le respondimos.

– Es nuestro sueño correr para su universidad –le dije–, pero… voy a necesitar una beca8. Mi fa-milia no tiene suficiente dinero para pagar la universidad.

– Bueno, hay mucha competencia para las becas –me respondió el cazatalentos–. Si tú corres la carrera en menos de cuatro minutos, podemos hablar de la oportunidad de correr para nos-otros con beca. Pero solo podemos ofrecer una beca en este evento. Voy a estar en contacto con ustedes. Y entonces, el cazatalentos se fue.

Capítulo 2 El accidente

Santiago y yo estábamos muy emocionados después de hablar con el cazatalentos. El resto del día hablamos sobre la posibilidad de correr para la universidad de nuestros sueños. Pero mientras hablábamos, no podía dejar de pensar en el final de la conversación con el ca-zatalentos. «Pero solo podemos ofrecer una beca en este evento».

Iba a ser una competencia entre Santiago y yo por la beca…, y Santiago siempre me ganaba.

Finalmente, la competencia de atletismo terminó.

Terminó tarde. Eran las 9 y llovía mucho.

– Santiago, vámonos ya. Es muy tarde –le dije a mi amigo.

– Sí, vamos –me respondió.

Puse mis zapatos en el carro de Santiago y me subí. Santiago conducía hacia mi casa y yo puse música en la radio.

– ¡Vaya1, mira la lluvia! –me dijo Santiago–. Es difícil ver con la lluvia.

– No me gusta la lluvia –le dije preocupado.

– No te preocupes, no voy a conducir rápido –me dijo Santiago, reduciendo la velocidad un poco. Yo no lo estaba escuchando. Yo estaba pensando en la oferta de la beca.

– Necesito una beca para poder ir a la universi-dad. Mi familia no tiene dinero para pagarla –le dije a Santiago.

– Es una oportunidad única en la vida2. ¡Y vamos a correr juntos!

– Pero solo uno de nosotros va a ganar la beca. Y solo si puedo correr la milla en menos de cua-tro minutos.

Santiago no me respondió. Era obvio que estaba pen-sando lo mismo que yo. Solo uno de nosotros iba a reci-bir la beca, y probablemente iba a ser él. Él era mi mejor amigo, pero ahora también éramos rivales por la beca.

– Mis padres sacrificaron todo para darme esta oportunidad –le dije pensando en mis padres–. Santiago, ¿crees que yo pueda correr la milla en cuatro minutos?

– ¡Claro que sí! Yo sé que tú puedes. Y cuando lo hagas, vas a recibir ofertas de muchas universi-dades –me respondió Santiago. Era obvio que él no quería continuar pensando en la beca.

– ¿Cómo sabes que yo voy a poder hacerlo?

– Porque yo te voy a ayudar3. Vamos a correr juntos todos los días –me dijo Santiago.

– Gracias, amigo.

Santiago me miró y sonrió. No vio la intersección
