Lublin is a city situated on Via Jagiellonica, which is a part of Via Regia –

a historical royal trail from Spain to Russia.

Lublin is the capital of the Lublin Region.

The city is inhabited by 348 567 residents.

The first historical records of Lublin date back to 1198.

Lublin as a student city

• Lublin is the greatest academic centre on the right side of the Vistula river. An estimated 100 000 young people study here.

Places of Historic Interest

Cracow gate (Brama Krakowska)

• Cracow Gate leads to the Old Town of Lublin. It is surmounted by a picture of Our Lady. In the old days the gate had defensive functions.

The Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski)

• A castle of stone, encircled by defensive walls, was erected in the 14th century. The Holy Trinity gothic church, which played the function of a royal chapel, was also built at that time.

The King’s Tribunal (Trybunał koronny)

• The King’s Tribunal used to play the function of a court; at present it houses the Registry Office. It was probably built around 1575 .

Museum of Lublin Village (Muzeum Wsi Lubelskiej)

• The Museum of Lublin village was created in1970.

Lublin Cathedral (Katedra lubelska)

• The Archcathedral of Lublin is a pearl of Baroque in the Lublin region.

Majdanek

• A former Nazi concentration and prisoners of war camp in Lublin, run by Germans in the years1941-1944.
