SOULE KINDRED NEWSLETTER VOLUME XXI , No . 3

Route of Soule Kindred Caravan in Duxbury on Sept.l2,1987

JULY, 1987

Start at Howard Johnson's on Route JA in Kingston. Drive North,At bottom of hill cross the Jones River ,

named for the captain of the Mayfiower. Take first right which goes under railroad brid ~e and along under Route J, bearing slightly left on Loring St.

Take next right on Bay Road, going around Kingston Bay -notice Myles Standish Monument on top of hill.

At flag pole go right on Standish St. Those going t o see Standish Monument turn ri ght on Crescent St. and into State Park. Those goi ng t o Myles Standish cellar hole go left on Marshall St. to the end.

At the cellar hole you see Duxbury Pier Light which is the entrance to the three bays - Plymouth, Kingston, and Duxbury bays. Beyond is the Pilgrim nuclear electric generating plant. See Clark's Island (named for the first mate of the Mayflower) where Pilgrims first landed from the shallop when exploring for a safe harbor.

Return the same streets to the flag pole where we turn left on Chestnut St. to ~he old ~ur1sl ground with graves of Myles Standish, John Alden and others of the period, including~ George Soule,

From here we turn right onto Pilgrim Byway and right again on Depot st.and around the flag pole once again, turning left · onto Washington St. You will see some of the large square houses built by sea captains about 1750. There were several ship yards off this road. After crossing Blue Fish River we see the Cable House on the left where the first trans-Atlantic cable from France terminated in 1869.

Straight along Powder Point Ave beside the bay we pass the Spar Soak where wooden spars for the sailing sh3.ps were seasoned in salt water. Then there is the site of an old Rope Walk where "Honest Dick", a faithful horse, worked for many years and earned a monument for himself.

On King Caesar Road we come to the home of Ezra Weston built about 1808 and now owned by the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society . Kr . Weston was known as

"King Caesar" because in his t i me he was reputed to own and operate more sa1 11ng~sh1ps than any one else along the Atlantic coast. The house is a splena1d Museum of the period.

At the . end of Powder Point we see the rebuilt wooden brid~e to the outer beach . Then we turn t o St. George Street . and Alden St to the John Alden House, built 1n 1653.

FAMXLV HXSTORXAN•s REPORT

The following article was sent to Dr. Mil ton Terry at hi s request for inclusion in the Newsletter . It was written by Shirley Amacher Robinson, r-life of' Max E. Robinson, to describe h er search for documentation to prol-·e h er husband's Soule lineage .

THE SEARCH FOR LYDIA SOWLE-6

· Lydia Sowle, daughter of James Sowle #570 of Mayflower Families, Vol. 3, is t he great-grandmother of my husband' s grandmother, Etta (Griffeth ) Reynolds, who was born in Duanesburgh, New York. The fragile thread which linked Lydia Sowle, wife of Isaac Gaige residing in Duanesburgh, to that of the daughter of James Sowle, presented a complicated problem in research that lasted for seven years .

Grandmother Reynolds' Quaker ancestors migrated from Dutchess County, New York, and settled along one main roadway or street, known by the quaint name, "Quaker Street", a village in the town of Duanesburgh, then Albany County, New York.

We found the first mention of Lydia Sowle with her parents, brothers and sisters, in the Vital Records of Rhode Island, as follows: SOWLE, James of Jonathan and Lydia, born 12, 8th mo., 1742; Mary his wife, 4, 4th mo ., 1746, Levinah, 30, 6th mo ., 1766; Deborah, 2, 4th mo., 1768; Lydia, 6, 5th mo., 1770; Jonathan, 11, 5th mo., 1772; Eunice, 31, 3rd mo., 1775.

Thus far, all ancestors of Grandmother Reynolds were members of t h e Society of Friends, so a search of these records was necessary. Monthly Meettngs were often~amed for the town in which most of t heir Preparative Meetings were held . Customarily, they were ''held circularly'', on e mont~ at one Preparative Meeting, the next month at another . · .Both Men's and Women's Meetings existed t.ri th each of the Minute~ kept by the Clerk, a presiding officer and not just a secretary.

In the records of Nine Partners Monthly Meeting of Dutchess County, New York, a Certificate of Removal was accepted from Monthly Meeting in Dartmouth in New England, 9, 5th mo., 1779, for "James Soule and hi s wife Mary and their c hildren, viz. Levina, Deborah, Lydia, Jonathan, Unice, and Hannah."

We do not know when Mary (White) Sowle died because there are no birth or death registers, as far as we know, for Nine Partne rs before 181 0 . However, a marr iage is recorded, 27, 9th mo., 1781, of Jame s Sowle, son of Jonathan (dec.) and Lydia of Dartmouth, of Dutc he ss County and Jemima Russell, widow, and daughter of Tristram Coffin and Jemima (both dec.) of Nan tucket, of Dutchess County. We can then assume that Mary Sowle's death occurred about 1780, leaving James with five young children .

At the Women' s Meeting h eld 18 , 1st mo ., 1787 , a report was made that Deborah Sow l e ' s behavior did not give Friends satisfaction for her ou tgoings , so Friends we r e appointed to inform her that of n ecessity th e ~riends "disown" her .

The marriage of Isaac Gaige , age 19 , and Lydia So~le , age 18 , took place in t h e Baptist Churc h (Stanford) at Bangall, Dutch ess County , on 13th November 1788. Isaac Gaige, born 12 August l i69 , was not Quaker, so perhaps rathe r t han have the severe disc ipline of Quakerism enforced upon h er by "disownment" for marrying " o ut '', Lydia ' s n a me does n ot appear in the records of Ni n e Partners. broke the game open in the fourth when junior third baseman Jeff Au· bin got all of a Fitchner fastball and drove it deep into the trees in center for a three-run homer.

"Jeff's a strong boy, that shot real· ly didn't surprise me," Cummings said. "It hit way up in the trees. That ball would have traveled 380, maybe 380 feet. He hit it well."

Sanborn head coach Hal Dodd agreed that Aubin's shot was the key blow that sent his team to its fourth loss in seven games.

APOLOGY TO SOULE DESCENDANTS

The publisher of my recently issued book, Plymouth Colony -- Its Histora and People -- 1620-1691 no ti fi ed me this week that he ha received a l et t er from a woman who had bought the booll:: and found that the name of Mayflo~o.'er passenge r George Soule had been left out o f the appe ndi x giving the signers of the Mayflower Compact (p . 413) . On c h ecking, I learned that this was true, and furt her that the error had not b een made by the publisher ' s staff , but by myself in the final draft of the manuscript .

George Sou l e was indeed a signer of the ~Jayflo 1ver Compact, and his name i s given to us by Nathaniel Morton on page 16 of his 1G69 book New Englands Me morial!. George Soule arrived at Plymouth as a servant accompanying Edward Winslmv, and h is name in my list should have been foJlot.•cd by "(w/3)", meaning that h e came 1..rith t h e third passenger listed by Bradford in h is !li s tory . I am sorry for the o mission, and offer my apology to all Soule descendants . The error wi ll be corrected as soo n as possibl e .

That it was George Soule whose name was omitted i s all the more regretful bec aus e 1vhen I was Historj an Ge n e ral o f t h e General Society of Mayflower Descendants it f e l l to me to have to examine and make d ec isions on some of the contested identifications in Mayflower Families Three, t h e 5-Generation book on George Soule . I kno~ some me mbers of t he Soule Kindred disagreed with my decisions , and l ~ould not want them to think of me as adding insult to injury. As I point out on page 179 o f !:...!..Y-mouth Colony, George Soule Has one of thos e arriving as a servant who showed he had the ability to ris e in status , one Hho ''became a freeman a nd was prosperous.'' In a brief biographic ~k etch o n page 355 1 mention t hat he acquired considerab1e amounts of land, and 1 give highlight s nf hi s ljfe , toget her with a reference to MF-3 for additional detai l s. George Soule was quite obviously an asset in the development o f Plymouth Co l o ny.

SCENES AROUND DUXBURY

We thank Board Member Dan Pearce for arranging our tour of Duxbury, the clam bake at the Alden House, and our afternoon speaker, Robert Hale.

T~e Hyles Standish aonuaent was constructed in the 1890's. Recently restored, the granite tower is topped by a 14 foot statue of Standish.

Standish Cellar Kole aarks the area on the bluff overlooking Duxbury Bay where Captain Kyles Standish settled in 1628.

Old Burying Ground contains graves of early settlers, soae with stones but aany unaarked. So~le Kindred placed a aemorial stone for George Soule 1n

this burying ground.

THE DUST ON COLE'S HILL by Isabelle Freeman

My temper flared and made me long to hurl

invective harsh across the narrow street

that spared me conflict with the crazy whirl

of teen-aged boys and girls with dancing feet.

Three adults stood there ready to entreat

behavior deemed sufficient to a place

designed to ease fatigue of bus-tour seat.

How true, they made no motion to deface

the soil that offers sacred deep embrace

to Pilgrim bones interred so long ago

they turned to dust as centuries erase

JULY, 1987

all proof of graves that Cole's Hill once could show.

But how I suffer as I oft observe

Contempt of dust Love tells us to preserve.
