The government is giving priority to thedevelopment of rural regions where the majorityof the people reside.

Better transport plays a pivotal role in thedevelopment of rural regions. Therefore, newvillage-to-village roads and village-to-town roadsare being built extensively along with small andlarge bridges, thereby enabling rural people totravel from one place to another with peace ofmind.

A ceremony to inaugurate the bridge ofKyauktalon Dam constructed by local people andthe Union Solidarity and Development Associationwas held at Yondaw Village of TaungthaTownship, Mandalay Division, on 13 July. Theemergence of the bridge has contributed a lot tothe development of the economic, education andhealth sectors of local people.

Likewise, a suspension bridge acrossMyittha River in Gangaw Township, MagwayDivision, was opened on 9 June. The bridge wasbuilt at a cost of over K 50 million contributed byMagway Division Peace and Development Counciland local people. The bridge can be of service tolocal people of 16 nearby villages all the yearround.

In the meantime, projects for supply ofdrinking water, which is imperative for ruraldevelopment, have been implemented. At present, over 30 townships in Sagaing, Magway andMandalay Divisions are enjoying the fruitfulresults of the projects. Similarly, model villagesfacilitated with new school buildings, ruraldispensaries and libraries are being established.

At a time when relentless efforts are beingmade with added momentum for ruraldevelopment under the leadership of thegovernment and with the participation of well-wishers, we firmly believe that the socio-economicstatus of local people will surely be enhanced allthe more.

Make relentless effortsfor rural development

Breast-feeding triggers pulses offeel-good hormone

A Tarahumara child is breastfed by his mother inthe hamlet of Rikinapuchi, northern Chihuahuastate, Mexico, on 22 January, 2008.—INTERNET

CHICAGO, 18 July—When a baby breast-feeds,it triggers a flood of thehormone oxytocin thatreleases milk from themammary gland and afeeling of love and trust inthe mother that ensures thebaby’s needs are met.

This reflex has longpuzzled researchersbecause it requires largesurges of oxytocin to pulloff all of this.

Using a special computermodel, researchers fromChina, France, Italy, andthe United Kingdom said

on Thursday they nowunderstand how it works.

Their study, reported inthe journal PLoS Com-putational Biology, suggests that breast feedingnot only taps the normalbrain cells involved insecreting oxytocin.

It also recruits dendrites—whose normal job is tocreate communicationchannels between braincells —into secreting thehormone.

This increases com-munication between theneurons and creates a hubof oxytocin production thatresults in bursts of thehormone released atregular intervals.

LONDON, 18 July—Your odds of survivingcancer depend on whichcountry you live in. And,in the United States, it alsodepends on whetheryou’re black or white, anew study finds.

Economic differencesamong countries, accessto health care, and theavailability of cancertreatments feed thedisparities in survival, thereport said.

“There is a very wideglobal range in the odds ofsurvival after a cancerdiagnosis,” said lead

Gore compared thechallenge to establishingSocial Security and theInterstate highwaysystem, as well as landinga man on the moon —allsuccesses that took morethan a single presidencyto accomplish and

required members of bothpolitical parties to over-come their partisanship.

The Alliance forClimate Protection, abipartisan group Goreleads, put the 30-year costof his plan —both govern-ment and private—at $1.5trillion to $3 trillion.

To speed up thetransition to new energysources, Gore said thesingle most importantpolicy change would be to“tax what we burn, notwhat we earn,” advocatinga tax on carbon dioxidepollution.—Internet

“The differences arelarge across the USA, and

even in different metro-politan areas,” he said.

Coleman believes thedifferences amongcountries — and withinregions of countries — isdirectly related to accessto health care.

Cambodia to produce4,000 tons of organic rice

in 2008PHNOM PENH, 18 July— Cambodia plans to produce

4,000 tons of organic rice this year for exports to EUand US, a 1,000 tons rise over last year, English-Khmerlanguage newspaper the Mekong Times said Friday.

The Centre for Studies and Development inCambodian Agriculture will undertake the task, whichis expected as a key step to strengthen the agriculturalsector, said the paper.

Around 10,000 families in eight provinces areproducing the organic rice, said center director YangSaing Koma. “We think only organic rice productioncan help the economic sector because this kind of ricecan be sold at a high price in local and internationalmarkets,” he added.

Thanks to right climate and soil conditions,Cambodia used to be a major rice producer andexporter before wars ravaged the country around1970s. Currently, Vietnam and Thailand have surpassedCambodia as the top rice exporters in the region.

tee Prime Minister Gen-eral Thein Sein and CECmember ministers held anemergency meeting inNay Pyi Taw on 3 May.In the afternoon the sameday, the control office wasopened in Yangon andrescue tasks werelaunched immediately.

The Ministry ofHealth opened its tempo-rary control office at theemergency and outpatientdepartment of YangonGeneral Hospital and pro-vided health care. Doc-tors from Public Healthand Disease Control De-partments made field trips

by helicopter, by car andby boat to Bogale,M a w l a m y i n e g y u n ,Labutta, Wakema, Pyapon,Dedaye and Myaungmyatownships. Severely in-jured victims were trans-ferred by helicopter toYangon General Hospital.Specialists provided health

care to the victim patients.I was much pleased to

notice the eagerness ofmedical teams consistingof medical experts, special-ists, general practitionersand nurses from hospitalsunder the Ministry ofHealth when I saw themoff at Wadan Jetty inYangon on 6 June beforetheir departure for Labutta,M y a w l a m y i n g y u n ,Bogale, Wakema, Pyaponand Myaungmya to pro-vide health care there.

Some of the memberswere young with less ex-perience in travelling, so Iwas concerned over them.

Out of worry about them, Iput them some questionssuch as “Do you take warmclothes, raincoats and mos-quito nets?” My worriesand anxieties were no morewhen young doctors saidto me, “Don’t worry aboutthat, sir. We take all neces-sary things and we are

determined to get to ourdestination.”

I also saw off special-ists, physicians, generalpractitioners and nurses atWadan Jetty in Yangonon 19 May morning be-fore their departure forAyeyawady Division inthree ships to providehealth care in storm-hit ar-eas such as Labutta,Bogale and Pyapon town-ships under the joint pro-gramme of the Ministryof Health and the Minis-try of Transport.

The three ships wereVessel Taing Aye thatwould leave for Bogale,

Vessel Ta-taing Hmway, for Pyapon Township, andVessel Vessantara, forLabutta. On 11 June, theywere reinforced with morespecialists and nurses onboard Vessel Pa Pa Win

bound forMawlamyinegyun Town-ship.

So far, 173 doctors in-cluding experts and spe-cialists plus 29 nurses ofthe teams on board float-ing hospitals have dis-charged duties in rotationfor 10 times.

In giving treatment tothe victims, the medicalteams from the floatinghospitals went round thetownship concerned, and

they proceeded by smallship or motorized boats tothe villages that were in-accessible by larger ves-sels.

Team members gavetreatment to the victim pa-

tients who visited theships, and they also vis-ited the patients to givetreatment. AyeyawadyDivision has a largenumber of rivers, creeksand lakes. So, it was diffi-cult for the people of somevillages near rivers orcreeks to get to the town-ship people’s hospitals, health departments andhealth care centres. So,various forms of mobilemedical teams were

formed.Traditional medi-

cine and modern medi-cine teams form the Tra-ditional Medicine De-partment left Pathein byship hospital Vessel Tet
