he devastation in Compostela Valley, DavaoOriental and other parts of Mindanaobrought about by typhoon Pablo last week

was due in part to environmental negligence orwanton cutting of trees in the mountains, accordingto an initial assessment by the Dept. of Environ-ment and Natural Resources (DENR), as evidenced

by logs and tree trunks that cascaded down fromthe mountains into the lowlands destroying agri-cultural crops, houses, properties, killing animalsand people.

According to veteran news reporter Jessica Soho, who was in one of the towns of Compostela Valley, the scene of devastation she witnessed was similarto previous scenes of calamities like in Ormoc Cityin 1991, Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities l;ast yearwhere the oods devastated houses, killed manypeople and destroyed government infrastructures.Death was everywhere, many people missing on ac-count of the ood, many people wounded, food anddrinking water was scarce makeshift evacuation

center hastily built because the people have nomore houses.

President Aquino while surveying the dev-astation has announced to really dig deeper onwhat really happened. For sure, it was a natu-ral calamity aggravated by mans negligenceof the environment by too much cutting o

trees in the mountains. People do not care onwhat will happen next so long as they can takewhat they want or get the pro t they intendedto have.

When will we learn? How many more liveswill be lost, communities devastated, proper-ties destroyed because of our abuse to the envi-ronment? There are many places in the entirecountry prone to disasters and catastropheslike parts of Compostela Valley and DavaoOriental. Those are catastrophes on the wait-ing.

This kind of calamity will happen again and

Today, Sunday, December 9,2012, the people of Basey, Samar,Philippines will not stop with the endof the most-probably-last bout be-tween Pacquiao and Marquez. Their excitement will continue up about 12

near tonight. There is something else big towatch in the town center. Its onewhose time has come, yes, after along, long wait. And it seems the

people of Basey are ready for this big thing. Mayor Junji E. Ponferradais on the forefront of local govern-ment unit preparations. As of Fridayafternoon, the young lawyer-mayor already enlisted and got the commit-ment of every responsible town of -cial, including members of the sang-

guniang bayan, to give their allfor the success of this other bigevent that will unfold by oneoclock this afternoon and con-

tinue until the late afternoon of this coming Tuesday.

For the rst time, Baseywill play host to the provincial

athletic meet of the 2012 Sa-mar Provincial Athletic Asso-ciation. Except for the citiesof Catbalogan and Calbayog, all the 24 towns, includingthe island towns, will be rep-resented in the 3-day friendlyand sportive competitionsamong public school studentathletes.

By 2 p.m., the meet willrst meet the thirst of Ba-saynons with a parade aroundthe town. Paraders delega-tion of cials, technical of -cials, coaches and athletes will assemble an hour earlier at the streets of San Lorenzo,

IN THE FIFTEENTH YEAR of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, whenPontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Gali-lee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Tracho-nitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthoodof Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Z echa-riah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan,

proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it iswritten in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of onecrying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straighthis paths. Every valley shall be lled and every mountain and hill shall

be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the roughways made smooth, and all esh shall see the salvation of God.

    Down

    reflection

    He Will Save All Flesh

By: Fr. Paul J. Marquez, SSP

The people of Jeru-salem found their city inrubbles after the Baby-lonian exile. Some hadstarted to worship Bab-ylonian gods and hadcompletely forgotten theGod of Israel, the Godof the Covenant. Therewas no glue, no rallying

point, that could holdthe nation together. The

people of Israel neededa prophet like Baruch toremind them of the mar-velous promises Godgave them when theywere still captives inBabylon.

The prophecy hadearlier assured them of their departure fromBabylon and of their long awaited homecom-ing, but God was pre-

paring them for some-thing much greater thanan ordinary return of Jerusalem. They wouldnot be restored to their old life, but they wouldtaste immeasurable joyand see astonishinglight. If Jerusalem were

previously comparableto a grieving widow, this time she would turninto a lovely and happyyoung lady. She wouldput on the splendor of glory from God forever:wrapped in the cloak of

justice from God, bear on [her] head and miter that displays the glory of the eternal name (Bar 5:1-2). The children of Jerusalem would returnfrom different directionsand everyone would re-

    joice.It is important that

the inhabitants of Je-rusalem be remindedabout the promises of God. The city had falleninto ignominy so theyneeded to hear again thevoice of God and hisassurance of his con-tinuing bene cence andcare. They needed tohear the voice of Godonce again so that their homecoming would beconsummate and com-

    plete.In the Second Read-

ing, Saint Paul servedas Gods voice to theChurch at Philippi. Thisis considered strange, knowing that at this

    point Paul was in jail.

Other Christians becamehis detractors and he wasdistressed to learn howfalse teachings had misledmany Philippians. Despiteall these, Paul sent a joyfulletter to his favorite Chris-tian Community: rst, inorder to thank them for thematerial and spiritual helpthey extended on his favor;secondly, in order to boosttheir morale and encouragethem to remain faithful toGod and strive after unity, itwas very possible that theywould lie prostrate and loseheart because their teacher Paul was thrown behind

bars. Paul earnestly re-minded them to be humblein their dealings with oneanother and to avoid sel shambition and pride. Paulassured the Philippiansthat God would continueto complete the good work

began by God among themuntil the day of Christ Je-sus (Phil 1:11). The Apostlerealized that his imprison-ment was not an accident

but was in fact in the mys-terious plan of God whosewisdom is in nite.

In the Gospel, Gods plan would be revealed tous in the person of John, son of Zechariah. John be-longed to the motley groupthat sincerely searched for God. This group failed tosee God among the lead-

ers of the Roman empirewho were supposed tomake Gods will manifestamong the people. Thisgroup did not also haveany experienced of Godamong the Jewish leader-ship nor among the high

priests in the Temple. Godhad spoken to John and hewas tasked to go through-out the whole region of the Jordan and proclaim a

baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Advent is Gods way of assuring us that God willagain come to our midst, and he will complete thegood work that he had

began in us. He will not bring us to our old self, but he will accompany usto our true home. Adventis our time in the desert,a time of prayer and pen-ance, contemplating themysteries of God and be-ing true to oneself and toothers. In the desert Godwill teach us how to llevery valley, make lowevery mountain and hill, make straight the windingroads and make smooththe rough ways.

In the unspeakabletransformation that Ad-vent can bring us, all eshshall see the enduringwork of Gods salvation, since the time of John theBaptist until now.

2003 to 2007.After he nished refor-matting, I inserted the USBand had it scanned for virus.Out of the 32 les, only twoles remain untouched. Allthe rest were erased with nohope of recovering the les.The same happened to myother two USB.

It is such a pain to have been a victim of unscrupu-lous computer intellectuals.Too much waste of time andeffort gathering and pre-serving the information and/or documents that turned tonil.

There were three anti-virus program installedwhen my son bought it for her daughter. Every timewe opened the computer wecould read No threat de-tected. We were con dentthat everything does well.Although, one of the anti-virus programs had been

warning that it needed to beupdated, we merely ignoredit. We thought the other an-ti-virus programs were per-forming ef ciently.

It was only after thetechnician told me the other anti-viruses were merelyfor cleaning, not for elimi-nating the virus. He said theanti-virus installed in thelaptop are not repairing buteven adds up to destroy the

ti-virus scanner that has to be updated every time thewarning pop up the screen.Likewise, he advised to scanevery USB before openingit. His instruction was after inserting the USB; I shouldnot open immediately, un-less it has been scanned.

Another advice is for me not to open or downloadmessages from personswhom I have not been ac-quainted with. Even mes-sage purportedly comingfrom a friend or relativesmay be from hackers should

be carefully screened. In addition, he told me

to save the important docu-ments in compartment D.It would be safe to have it inother compartment to avoid

being affected with virus, if ever it passed through thescrutiny of the anti-virus heinstalled.

A knockout is what isneeded to end this rivalry.Pacquiao has the capabil-ity for a knockout becausehe has oored Marquez 4times in their last 3 ghts.

Pacquiao has a lot to prove when they square off for their largely anticipatedshowdown. Pacquiao is

eager to show to the worldthat his ability and power have not diminished after a below par performance inhis last 2 ghts.

There are prediction thatthis 4th duel between Man-ny Pacquiao and Juan Ma-nuel Marquez will end in aknockout. When they last

tor Chiz Escudero said the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AM -LAC) ignored the clear red agsignals on the investment scamgroup Aman Futures Group thatallowed similar groups to prolif-erate and con thousands of peo-

ple to part with their hard-earnedmoney. It is a puzzle why all thetell-tale signs were ignored byAMLAC when bank transactionsand activities by the Aman groupand other related companies arealready swelling with red ag sig -nals. The Aman Futures scam has

been in the open in Pagadian sincetwo months ago. Evidence shouldhave been available by now. Infact, the Securities and ExchangeCommission website has come

out with a warning on the Amaninvestment scam, the senator said. Escudero, chairman of theSenate committee on justice andhuman rights said had AMLAC

been more insightful about thesedevelopments; the magnitude of the scam could have been abated.

Now we need the Depart-ment of Justice (DOJ) to immedi -ately secure the list of those whoinvested in Aman Futures and howmuch investments were put as thismay lead to concrete evidence tosupport the case against the groupthat duped thousands of people inMindanao and the Visayas of anestimated P12 billion.

The senator said the speedyaction of the DOJ and other gov-ernment agencies on the AmanFutures scam and other invest-ment scams in Mindanao and theVisayas will help ease the painand suffering of thousands of vic-

tims who lost billions of pesos. He added that the DOJ shouldalready le a case against theAman Group motu propio giventhe magnitude of the case and thenumber of victims that have sofar come out. RA 9160 and RA9194 and its implementing ruleswill form the basis of this act.

The DOJ has been facilitatingcomplaints through the Na-tional Bureau of Investigation(NBI), that is a correct sta nd-ard procedure.
