ing area and was awardedmaterials for these beds, ashed to store our tools, etc. a

picnic table, tools and hoses.Two eagle scouts completed

projects on the site.

The McKinley Peace Garden- located on Ann Ave behindthe McKinley Jr. Academyat 2156 Russell Blvd - wasstarted in the Spring of 2010.Pastor Kathleen and Princi-

pal Williams met and de-cided a garden could be awin-win for both the schooland LPUMC. Members of the church prepared anagreement between the twogroups and other members

provided the garden with 104x4 beds and one round bed

for planting. A berm and ashade garden was alsoadded; and the area along theeast (alley) fence was

planted with trees, shrubs,etc. A softer look to the envi-ronment for the students and

crops to share with our com-munity is the result.The three top reasons for the

garden were: 1) enhancehealth through a better diet

by providing vegetables andfruits in the food desert of the local community; aswell, enhance the selection

Lafayette Park UMC hostedthe Winter Outreach meetingin June. Winter Outreach isa volunteer group that startedabout 4 - 5 years ago as away to prevent people freez-ing to death during bitterlycold winter nights. Sincethey have been working to-gether, we do not believe

that anyone has died fromexposure to the winter weather. Part of Winter Out-reach is gathering blankets,coats, gloves to support peo-

ple who choose to sleep out-side, so that they might notfreeze to death. We havehelped support those effortsin the past. Another compo-

nent of Winter outreach is agroup of people who go outat night when it is going to

be 20 degrees or colder tofind people who are sleepingoutside and invite them intoshelter so that they mightsleep in safety.

LPUMC again participatedin PrideFest on June 25 and26. We had a great crowd!Volunteers received a lot of interest from singles, cou-

ples and families. We alsohad many conversationswith individuals who have

left their home church because they did not feelwelcome and also we

came in contact with afew folks who had beenvisiting us over the lastfew months.

Caroline Ban and Fred Domke at-tended the McKinley Heights

Neighborhood meeting in June andhave recruited several more inter-ested gardeners. Contact has also

been made with Sigel School for some distribution to be made to thestudent's families.

Bulbs, plants and volunteers arealways welcome as we plant, weed(we are fighting Bermuda Grass)

and harvest. All crops are weighed

and reported to Gateway Greeningat the end of the season. We also are

responsible to pay back to GatewayGreening the sum of 30 work hourson our choice of project or projects.

One is the installation of additional beds, three benches, and three trees.The other is the preparation andinstallation of an outdoor classroomfor the use of students and shelter for the gardeners, which includesfive picnic benches. The gardenershave used this for our evening sup-

per meeting!

The Youth Group has beenmeeting on Sunday after-noon now for severalweeks, and recently soldsnow cones as a fundraiser.(Youth made the ice,

poured the syrup, and col-

lected the money! Parentshelped load and unloadsupplies.)

We have also been partici-

pating in Youth Sundays. Ithas been a joy to haveyouth reading the selectedreadings and being in-volved in worship. Wehope to develop that moreas time goes on.

The youth just had our firstyouth lock in. It was tiring

but fun. We played toilet paper dodge ball, builtforts, played sardines ( hideand seek), played rock bandand Super Mario brothers,ate pizza, talked about

prayer, and slept very little.

It was a blast!

We look forward to moreservice opportunities andare always looking for

more. (Weare planningon servingmeals at TheBridge whenneeded.)

Our nextevent will begoing to the zoo on Fri-day the 22nd (tell your friends and check withthe rents)!
