SYNOPSIS
Love and Basketball is an American Romantic drama movie filmed in 2000. The two main characters in this film are Omar Epps who plays the role of Quincy McCall and SanaaLathan who plays the role of Monica Wright. The film is the story of McCall and Wright meeting when young through the love of basketball and both dreaming of a professional career as a basketball player before finally falling in love with each other. The film was written by screenwriter and film director Gina Prince-Bythewood. The production of this film started from August 1999 until October 1999 then was released in 2000 and in 2001 Love and Basketball won best film and best soundtrack.
CINEMATOGRAPHYCinematography is the art of the camera. This includes camera framing, camera angles and photographic techniques. Cinematography is the name given to a group of techniques used to capture images. The cinematography is not the best in the film, but there's a lot of mid shots are used to show the relationship between characters and there are not much angle shots to talk about in this film as it is based on mainly emotion.
In this picture you can see the anger between the two women as they are playing basketball and both on opposite teams. This shows that you do not need surrounding items to show confrontation.
From this mid shot you can see the passion between the two main characters even though it is only a head shot it still tells the story.
Wide shots are common when there is a basketball match scene this is because you can see the props used to create the scene and also showing that a crowd creates the atmosphere and mood that is normally at a basketball match.
Many midshots have been used in this film. In this midshot the main character is central compared to the male which is to the right of this picture. Which connotates that she is the main focus which will make the audience will look straight at her.
THEORIES
The main two characters in the film are both heroes. In this opening scene we are introduced to them as young children having a friendly basketball match outside their house. The villain would have to be the father because although his not evil he does try to stop one of the heroes from achieving her dream which is playing basketball professionally. Narrative is structured in quarters to resemble a basketball match.
NARRATIVE
In this still you she reveals that she is a girl and comes out with a comedy line that she can ball better than any boy. This is part of the genre in this film.
Upbeat music showing the suburb area located in America. It is an establishing shot and a sunny day which connotates with the music being played.
Mise-en-scene is everything you can see in the shot of still image in a film. It is how everything is positioned and designed in the shot. It includes things like body language, facial expressions, lighting, setting and props.
The costume in the still shows that there is something basketball related happening also there is only girls in the shot makes the audience think that it is an all girls basketball game.
In this still image you can see there is some sort of emotion in this scene as there are both standing on opposite sides of screen which could show conflict or alliance between both of the main characters. The fact that this scene takes place at night also represents the mood and atmosphere between the two characters.
The props use in this scene shows that children are involved. The time period which is day also symbolises the time that children would go out to play a game of basketball.
SOUNDThe sound throughout the entire movie is relevant to the scene as it creates an impact on the film, because it sets the scene. If there was no sound you would only understand the film to an extent and not understand the true meaning and storyline. The sound is also created to heighten the mood and provides the audience with information about the location of a scene, advance the plot, and tell us about the characters in the story.
REVIEWSLove and Basketball has received many reviews over the past years most were generally favourable reviews and people have said things like: There is confident directing and acting delivering an insightful look at young athletes. I enjoyed how the film portrayed women's sports in general and says "The speed and wiliness of the game itself ensure that movies about men who shoot hoops are exciting, but the novelty of watching women bring their own physical grace to the contest is a turn-on. Most people commented on Prince-Bythewood’s directing skills claiming “She is also vigilant and honest about the hard sacrifices made in pursuit of sexual equality. And for that, she scores big in her first pro game."
