Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2020
Entrance Antiphon O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help;
O Lord, do not delay.
Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father, Amen.
First Reading Isaiah 55:1-3
Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 45
The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
Second Reading
Romans 8:35, 37-39 Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel Matthew 14:13-21
When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heav-en, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2020
Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and in-visible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father be-fore all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made con-substantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva-tion he came down from heaven, and by the Ho-ly Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I be-lieve in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the for-giveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all
his holy Church.
Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Mystery of Faith We proclaim your Death, O Lord,
and profess your Resurrection until you come again.
The Communion Rite
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
Lamb of God
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Communion Lord, I am not worthy that you should
enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Communion Antiphon
You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.

Jacki Carrino became our rectory cook in January 1989. Since that time she has taken marvelous care of the thirty-one priests who have served at St. Charles from 1989 to 2020. In addition, she fed the deacons and interns assigned to our parish by St. Mary Seminary. Jacki also did a stint
coordinating the Carnival Kitchen and she chaired the Ladies Guild Salad Luncheon since its inception. She was an expert in all aspects of hospitality. Jacki did everything with kindness, good humor, and dedication. She was a best friend to our dogs, Barkley and Duffy. Midway during her years with us, she met a very fine man from the parish. The couple fell in love and were married here. Jacki asked me to “walk her down the aisle and give her away.” That I did. I then joined the eighteen priests in the sanctuary who “came back” to St. Charles for Jacki’s special day. Sister Patrick Marie was the maid of honor! It is a wedding I will long remember. From then on, she was Jacki Szopo. Since March, Jacki has been “sheltering in place.” We have tried to get by in the kitchen as best we could. Last week, Jacki told me that it is time for her to retire and spend more time with her husband, John. I am not ashamed to say that it was a tearful conversation—for both of us! Thank you, Jacki, for thirty plus years of faithful service. May the years ahead be many, health-filled, and blessed. Beginning this Saturday, August 1, we will hear individual confessions in the Parish Offices: 3:00 to 3:45pm and 4:45 to 5:30pm. This is necessary to allow you the required “six foot social distancing.” Please enter the rectory through the east door, opposite the main entrance to the Corrigan Gym. Do not knock or ring the bell, just enter the building. The “confessional area” will be in the two offices on the left. There are no steps and the entrance will be clearly marked. I know this is less than ideal, but it is the best we can do, given the current COVID-19 regulations. Masks must be worn. There are only two weeks yet to go before our “Two Step” Summer Raffle concludes. So that means three more $500 Sellers’ Appreciation prizes to be awarded on Sundays, August 2, 9, and 16. We will add some extra “Authentic Carnival prizes” to the mix: salamis and Youth Group Ice Cream will also be awarded as Sellers’ prizes. Additional white, blue, ivory, and pink raffle tickets are available at the Parish Office. Purchase/sell one sheet of each color and you are entered in the Drawing for some Spectacular Mystery Prizes. It is time to tell what those prizes will be: Mystery Prize Number One: a bar cart filled with Irish whiskeys -- Jameson’s, Powers, Paddy’s, Bushmills, Tullamore Dew, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Irish Mist, and an assortment of Irish beers (We can’t go to Ireland this year, so let’s bring Ireland here!) Mystery Prize Number Two: two bar carts with an assortment of various wines: red, white, dry, sweet, etc. The Mystery Prizes are my gifts to thank you for your tremendous help with our “Two Step” Summer 2020 Raffle! Please make your raffle ticket returns in the Offertory, at the Parish Office, or in the mail. On Monday, July 27, ticket sales had amounted to $101,455.

Merici Chapel… In these uncertain times, we have a lot on our minds and are worried about many things—COVID-19, jobs, returning to work and school, politics and social unrest. One thing you don’t have to worry about, visiting Jesus in Merici Chapel. His door is always open and He’s a good listener and will calm your fears and give you peace of mind. Try a short visit once a week, it just may and should become a lifelong habit.
