What is MESA?
• MESA is a state program designed to get students to major in majors related to Math, Science, Engineering and technology
WHY MESA• Develop academic skills
– Helps you achieve in your math and science classes
– Provides hands on activities in math, engineering, science and technology

• Saturday Academies:– Held on Saturday on Oct. 22rd, Nov. 19th, Dec.
3th, Feb. 26th
• Online Academy:– Completed on online
• Two are Mandatory
MESA DAY PRELIMS
• SUPER BOWL of MESA
• Students compete in projects of their choice
• Top three finishers go on to Regionals held at Santa Barbara on April 21st

MESA CLASS OVERVIEW
• Provides enrichment activities in math and science
• Provides project support for MESA day competitions
• Career and college advising– Help applying for college– Completing FAFSA forms– College exploration
MESA CLASS OVERVIEW
• Provide tutoring in all subjects– Would like students to have at least
a C in every subject• Teach study skills so students can
succeed in high school and college• Class would be tailored to
students needs
WHY TAKE A MESA CLASS
• Get credit for competing projects• Looks good on college transcripts
– UC, CSU and many private colleges (State and nationally) are familiar with the program
• Proven results in test scores and student performance at the LBJHS
Projects of the Month
• There will be one project per month beginning in September and ending in December
• Projects will help students prepare for MESA Day prelims
• Participation will earn us points toward school of the year points
FIELD TRIPS 2011-2012
• College Road trip–Colleges in northern California
–Cost is approximately $150 to $200
–Happens Thanksgiving week
• CIMI (Catalina Island Marine Institute) in the Spring

Other Mesa Activities
• Academic Advising–Details will be announced
•PSAT/SAT –Fee waivers available (must meet certain requirements) Dates to be announced
•Afterschool Tutoring–Homework help–Place to do homework–Available in 403 or 21
STUDENT LEADESHIP
• There will be six officers– President—Responsible for all leadership reports– Vice President—Plans all fundraiser activities– Treasurer—keeps track of club finances– Secretary—keeps minutes, writes announcements– Class Representative—cannot be in MESA class– Club Representative—Must be in MESA class

• Elections:– Nominations will be next week
• Each nominee must give a brief speech
– Elections will be held next week after the candidates give their speeches
• Only registered club members can vote– Must be registered online in order to vote

–Vote: Day and time of meetings–Attendance at Meetings are strongly encouraged;
•After school –Project of the month, advisement, enrichment activities, MESA Day projects and tutoring–Strongly encouraged
•If you cannot make meetings due to sports or school related activities, please see me.•Meeting PowerPoints will be available online
REGISTERING FOR MESA
• Applications– Everyone must complete online application
• Download at www.mesa.csufresno.edu
• obtain directions from Mr. Tugman
– Turn in Parent Authorization form to Mr. Tugman in room 403
– Complete and return LBHS MESA Application
LBHS GOALS 2010-2011
• 80% of members successfully complete the online academy
• 80% of members participate in after school activities
• 80% of members successfully complete minimum of two MESA day projects excluding math
MESA Club Points
• You will receive points toward outstanding MESA day student for each of the following– Attending weekly meeting– Coming to after school workshops/tutoring– Completing Online academy– Attending Saturday Academies– Placing in the top three at Saturday academies, Prelims
and Regionals– Attending field trips
