QCS This week our Year 12 students sit for the Queensland Core Skills Test which is held over two days. We extend to them our prayers and very best wishes knowing that they will give their best. TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà Year 8 White, Blue and Green have produced paintings which explored the theme of their individual contribution to community life. They were required to consider the composition of the figures to create their desired “crowd”. Their own image was a symbolic of how they saw themselves with particular focus on the gifts and talents they contributed to the group. Their artwork is presented below. Griffith University Criminology and Criminal Justice Careers Information Evening

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice will be holding a Careers Information Evening for current and prospective students and their families on Thursday 5 September. The purpose of the evening is to inform present and prospective students of the career options and employment opportunities open to Criminology and Criminal Justice graduates. XÇzÄ|á{ axãá Brisbane Writers’ Festival - This Friday 6 September, 35 girls from Year 9 will be attending this festival. It should be a great experience for the girls. The girls will be given information about their elected sessions and venues at a lunchtime meeting on Wednesday. They will come to school in their day uniform with a small bag for their lunch and personal items. First of all they will go to homeroom for roll marking and then they will gather in the undercroft area before getting the bus which will transport us to and from the venues of the Cultural Precinct and QUT. The girls will be back at school in time for Period 6 and so they must be prepared for this class. They will be accompanied for the day by Ms Matheson, Ms McCormack and me. [cX jxx~ Last week Loreto celebrated HPE week with a number of activities and events organised. On Monday the students participated in a boxercise session (thanks to Wes Clark of Clark's Lifestyle Centre, Tarragindi). Tuesday was followed with a healthy bake organised by the Health & Wellbeing Council and Loreto's Inaugural Relay Run. The event was a relay run through the school, with Mulhall taking out the event. The teachers did well with no pulled hamstrings (just egos a little deflated). On Wednesday, the staff played the Sports Council in a game of dodgeball. The staff dominated, winning 3 -1 (sorry girls!). On Thursday we celebrated a skipping day where Veronika Koprivcic showed her talents and put on a skipping display in the Mary Ward Centre. This was followed by some individual skipping and group skipping activities. The last event was a mass Zumba class which was well attended. Ashleigh, our instructor, put the students through an energetic class and heart rates and temperatures soared! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their enthusiasm and involvement demonstrated on each of the days. I would also like to thank the staff and, in particular, Coun-cil leaders Hannah Reece and Sam Firrell for their support. In the next few weeks a lunch time sports equipment room will also be launched, with Year 8 students heavily involved in the planning and administration of this new initiative. Stay tuned! Since retiring as Loreto’s Librarian, Kathy Hedemann is volunteering with ‘Room to Read’, an international organization which raises money to establish libraries in Asia and Africa.

Its founder, John Wood, left Microsoft and between 2000 and 2010 his organisation established 10,000 libraries – more libraries than Starbucks opened coffee shops! Check out his book in the library: How I left Microsoft to Change

the World. This dinner will raise funds for Sri Lankan girls’ education and Sri Lankan food will be on the menu. More details about booking online soon.

Book week Activities The Library celebrated Book week with various activities. It was wonderful to see many students dressing up as their favourite story book character.

The Anime and Manga Club has commenced and meetings are held once a fortnight on Fridays. The Library has introduced a new collection titled “ The Classics”. We hope that students will widen their understanding of what a classic is by reading such diverse choices as Frankenstein, The Hours, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, To Sir with Love, Fahrenheit 451, Catch 22 and Heidi. As part of 8 Red’s novel study of Coraline each student was required to create an alternative book cover that represented the use of their visual literacy and synthesis skills. The visual had to reflect the Gothic Horror elements of the novel whilst the blurb had to be an effective summary / teaser for prospective readers. These were part of the library display for Book Week and students were invited to vote for their favourite cover. There were many interesting covers and the girls enjoyed showcasing their acquired skills.

Leah Condoleon’s interpretation was judged the most interesting cover for the novel. Congratulations to Leah for her wonderful work and to all the students for their creative interpretations of the novel. Deborah Bauer - 8 Red English teacher



`âá|v axãá Rehearsals during Exams – As usual, the Music Department will be cancelling many rehearsals during the exam block to allow students to prepare for their various assessments. Please take careful note of the attached Rehearsal Schedule for the remainder of Term 3. Where rehearsals have not been cancelled, it is expected that all students do attend.

Bandslam – The final for Bandslam will be held in the Mary Ward Centre at lunch on Tuesday 10 September. Points for entrants, finalist and the section winner will contribute to the House Trophy for the Loreto Music Festival and audience response will be part of the judging process, so come along and support your house!

Lunchtime Music Recital – Over the next week, students will have the opportunity to present solos in a concert setting through the Lunchtime Musical Recitals. The response this term has been so good that we will run two concerts, one this Friday 6 September and a second the following Monday 9 September. These are always enjoyable concerts, with varied programs of performances and a range of different instruments, so it would be great to see lots of supporters come along. Concerts will start at 12:45pm on Friday and 1pm on Monday and be held on the Mary Ward Centre Stage.

Crazy For You Auditions - All audition materials for the 2014 musical "Crazy For You" are now available on the Villanova College web site (http://www.vnc.qld.edu.au/index.php/music-events/crazy-for-you.html). Students who are intending to audition should consider attending the audition read-through afternoon on Monday 9 September 3:30-4:30pm at Hanrahan Theatre, Villanova College. During this brief session, students will be introduced to the storyline and characters of the musical, view Youtube clips of other schools' productions, listen to a selection of tracks from the 1992 Broadway production, and meet some of the key production staff. Attendance at the read-through will ensure you are as well prepared for your auditions as you possibly could be!

The auditions for all girls (singing, dancing and acting) will take place at Villanova College on Monday 14 October, commencing at 3:30pm. More details about the musical auditions, as well as audition downloads and a production calendar, can be found by following the link, above. Please note that positions in the Musical are limited to students in Year 10 to 12 of the production year (current Years 9-11). Music Extension Recital – On Thursday 10 October, the students of the Year 12 Music Extension class will present their Performance Recitals in a concert on the Mary Ward Centre Stage. Family and friends are welcome to attend this high quality concert, which will begin at 6pm. Any Year 11 students who are considering Music Extension as an option for next year may also benefit from attending.

Ensemble Auditions – Briefly summarising last week’s article, to both maximise opportunity for participation and maintain the highest possible musical quality, Loreto Music runs four core music ensembles – Concert Band One, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble One and Senior Choir. Participation in the College’s Ensemble Program is based on the presumption that every student who chooses to be involved would be a member of either one of these four groups or its appropriate supporting ensemble. Participation in advanced ensembles then provides extension for students who are already members of the appropriate core, or supporting, groups.

So, if our aim is to provide performance opportunities for as many students as possible, why do we make students audition to get in? And why do they have to re-audition every year, even to get back into the same groups in which they already play? The answer to the first question is that the auditions allow us to place students in the group that is most suitable to their current playing level. Obviously a flautist who has limited experience is more likely to have a successful year playing in Flute Ensemble Two with simpler music and a conductor who is a specialist on their instrument, than if she had to deal independently with the more advanced music played by Concert Band One. Conversely a student who has been playing for many years would be likely to thrive with this greater challenge.

Secondly, students are asked to re-audition each year as, beyond simply matching students’ playing experience to music standards, there are also multiple considerations needed for placements within groups. For example, in the Jazz Band trumpet section, the first trumpeter has the specific requirements of being able to play the higher notes as well as lead the section accurately and stylistically, but the second trumpet player is a frequent soloist and should be a stronger improviser. In the String Ensemble, the position of Principal second violin requires a player to show more experience and leadership than being selected to play at the back of the first violins. Yearly auditions allow the conductors to make these detailed judgements and provide challenge and support for individual students even within an ensemble.

Private Tuition Withdrawals – This Friday 6 September is the final day for parents to withdraw their daughters from Private Tuition for Term 4. After this date, your daughter’s continuation is presumed and you will be charged Term Four Tuition Fees irrespective. Fathers’ Day breakfast Dads and their daughters turned out in large numbers outside and inside the Mary Ward Centre last Friday for the annual Father’s Day breakfast. On an unseasonally warm winter’s day, they enjoyed bacon and egg sandwiches, fruit, juice and coffee in an event put on by the P & F. However it would not have been possible without the help of the staff at Loreto, particularly Bill Bradic, Mark Onions, Michael Mulcahy and Ljiljana Cokara. Thank you to all volunteers including those who set up and helped serve. Fathers were presented with a choice of gifts - stubby coolers and screwdrivers – to thank them for all they do. . If these are not collected by the end of term, it will be assumed that you no longer require these items and arrangements will be made for leftover items to be sold and funds donated to the P&F. We can no longer sell the “old” style blazers so if you would like us to, we can remove the pockets and send the blazers onto SVDP who issue these to the needy or homeless. If you have a blazer in the uniform shop can you let me know if you are happy with these arrangements. Current families who wish to order blazers have until the end of term to have their daughters fitted. Other arrangements will be made for new 2014 families to attend a special fitting day (dates to be finalised). More information will be available once we have the sustainable school shop up and running. This unit aims to raise awareness and answer questions pertaining to safety and responsibility in online behaviour. Girls are receiving input from two staff members who have expertise in this area. Ms Andrea Engler is the school’s Library and Information Services Officer and Mr Gary Marsh is our Systems/Network Administrator. The girls are also engaging in activities which require them to analyse their behaviour when using Social Media sites. I encourage you to continue these discussions with your daughter at home. 2014 MARY WARD GRANT

Mary Ward, 1585 – 1645, founded the ins tute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known in Australia as Loreto.

Convinced that ‘Women in me to come will do much’, she believed passionately in the educa on of women to

their full poten al and to the highest contemporary standards.

In order to promote the dignity and role of women in church and society, the Mary Ward Grant was established

to support specialist or post‐graduate study of theology, spirituality and pastoral ministry.

This is a par al Grant to assist applicants who have financial needs, including those seeking to complete the final

year of under‐graduate study.

Priority is given to Catholic lay women. Other applica ons will be given serious considera on.

Grants will be offered at the discre on of the Grant Commi ee. Each applica on will be treated confiden ally

on an individual basis, and no discussion on the outcome will be entered into.

Catholic education has approached both major parties about their education policies and how they will affect the 735,000 students educated in the 1,706 Catholic schools across Australia. Both major parties were asked six questions, and their responses are provided below.

AustrAliAn lAbor PArty liberAl-nAtionAl CoAlitionHow will your policy support parents to choose the education they want for their children and ensure religious freedom for Catholic schools is preserved?

“Federal Labor’s Better Schools Plan will deliver an extra $1.6 billion in additional funding for Australia’s 1,650 Catholic systemic schools over the next six years if every state and territory signs up. Of this, more than $1 billion will flow from the Federal Government under the Better Schools Plan.

Federal Labor has the utmost respect for the integrity and autonomy of the Catholic education system, and the Better Schools Plan preserves the religious freedom Catholic schools enjoy.

Federal Labor recognises the significant role Catholic schools have played in the Australian education sector for more than 150 years, serving some of the most disadvantaged communities in Australia.

It is an educational system with a proven track record - from educating some of our best and brightest, to taking on some of the most disadvantaged students.

The Rudd Labor Government and the National Catholic Education Commission worked constructively and respectfully over many months to secure agreement on the Better Schools Plan funding and reforms.

The additional funding under the Better Schools Plan will enable Catholic systemic schools to implement the signature reforms of the Better Schools Plan including initiatives around quality teaching, quality learning, meeting student need, empowered school leadership and better data collection and research to drive improvements within schools.

Federal Labor has set an ambitious target for Australian schools to be in the top five in the world in reading, maths and science by 2025 – this goals can only be achieved by working together with Catholic schools. The Better Schools Plan will ensure that every Australian child, irrespective of where they live, which school they attend or their family background, goes to a school with the resources required to deliver a great education.”

“The Coalition appreciates the vital contribution that Catholic schools make to Australian society by educating almost 750,000 children.

We believe in that parents should be guaranteed the freedom to choose an education that best suits the needs of their children and their personal beliefs.

We strongly support the rights of Catholic schools to conduct and govern themselves in every respect in accordance with their religious beliefs and values. This includes curriculum, school practice and enrolment.”

How will your policy affect the ability of Catholic education systems and schools to distribute funding according to locally-identified needs?

“The Better Schools Plan recognises local Catholic Education Commissions as the system managers of schools within local Diocese and provides for distribution by the Catholic education offices based on locally-identified need.”

“The Coalition strongly supports the ability of Catholic education systems to flexibly and responsively re-distribute funding according to local need.

We do not support policies which seek to impede or restrict this capacity. We will remove any administrative requirements in the Australian Education Act 2013 that reduce system autonomy.”

How will your policy deliver additional government funding to support student needs and ensure funding keeps pace with the real cost of educating a child?

“The Better Schools Plan Federal provides an indexation rate of 4.7 per cent on Commonwealth funding from 2014. This generous indexation rate is locked in, providing certainty for schools through to 2019. In return, state and territory government have been asked to commit to 3 per cent indexation. This generous indexation rate will ensure schools continue to receive real funding increases through to 2019 as well as the additional funding that will flow based on the needs of individual students.”

“The total amount of Commonwealth funding committed by the Labor Government over the forward estimates will be maintained and will be indexed each year to meet rising costs. This means that if the Coalition is elected, the Commonwealth will spend an additional $2.8 billion to 2017 on all schools.”

How will your policy support the needs of students with particular disadvantage, students with disability and other special needs to receive funding to meet their needs, regardless of the school they attend?

“At the heart of the Better Schools Plan is a new, fairer school funding approach based on the needs of individual students. This new fairer funding approach is based on the core recommendations of the independent Gonski review, which includes extra money for disadvantaged schools and students. Under the Better Schools Plan all students will receive some portion of a base amount of $9,271 for primary students and $12,193 for secondary student. The Better Schools Plan needs based funding model then adds loadings based on the individual circumstances of the school and its students for: Students from low SES backgrounds; Indigenous students; Students with low English language proficiency; Students with disability; school size and location. More information about how much additional funding each of the loadings will attract can be found at www.betterschools.gov.au”

“The Coalition will commit to the same quantum of funds provided over the forward estimates which includes funding for students with particular disadvantage, including those with a disability. We believe extra support for these students should be made available, regardless of school attended.

The Coalition will also ensure that Catholic systems will have the ability to use Commonwealth funding to support locally-developed programs that improve the educational outcomes of students with additional needs.”

What government funding for the capital needs of Catholic schools do you have planned? Does this funding recognise Catholic education’s support of disadvantaged communities and willingness to establish in new growth areas?

“The Rudd Labor Government recognises the increasing demand for new schooling facilities in high growth areas and recognises Catholic education’s willingness to establish new schools in growth areas. Federal Labor will continue the non-government capital grants program with around $140 million in 2014 and more than $772 million through to 2019. This funding will assist Catholic schools serving some of our most disadvantaged communities address growth and expand. This investment builds on the $16.2 billion Building the Education Revolution that transformed schools across the country, including Catholic schools.”

“The Coalition will establish, when the Budget allows, a new Capital Infrastructure Fund that can be accessed by Catholic schools, in addition to government and other non-government schools.

The Coalition has taken this approach because it recognises that Catholic schools are often some of the first infrastructure developed in new growth areas. These schools may not be built without government support potentially depriving parents of a choice of education for their children.

The Coalition also recognises that Catholic school communities need to refurbish classroom and other school facilities. This can often be difficult for some school communities. This fund will also be available to support Catholic schools upgrade their existing facilities.”

How will your policy deliver funding certainty for schools?

“Federal Labor’s Better Schools Plan delivers an extra $15 billion in public funds over the next six years, if every state and territory signs up. The plan provides certainty about the additional funding that will continue to flow to schools through to 2019.”

“The Coalition remains committed to supporting parents choose a Catholic education for their children.

The total amount of Commonwealth funding for Catholic schools over the forward estimates will be exactly the same as committed by the Labor Government and indexed over those four years.”
