Dear Parents and Students

With great pleasure I am able to advise the community that the Stage 1 building works are set to commence on or about the week of 25 November.

These works will include:

refurbishment of the existing Home Economics rooms;

a new ‘hospitality’ kitchen for senior students;

re-design and refurbishment of the Tuckshop, undercroft and surrounds;

a new five classroom building (which we hope one day will become the front entrance of a 500 seat Performing Arts Centre);

improved locker spaces for Year 11 and Year 9;

improved student reception and staff study areas.

These significant developments mark the beginning of our re-imagined future. I very much look forward to their construction and thank you for the interest and encouragement shown in this project and for your patience and understanding in the months ahead. Necessarily these works will cause some disruption to the community however I wish to reassure you that every effort will be made to keep these to a minimum. That said, I feel it important to alert the community that, based on the recommendations of traffic consultants, for reasons of safety that the future use of the ‘circular drive’ (as a pick-up and drop-off zone) will eventually need to change. Further details will be forthcoming in due course.


ORIENTATION DAY

Today we welcomed some 140 ‘new’ Loreto girls to the school, with next year’s Year 8 students spending their first day at Loreto. There was so much excitement and lots and lots of smiles.

They experienced a fairly typical day, sampling various subjects and a range of different activities. I thank the teachers and staff involved for making their day so enjoyable.

CONGRATULATIONS

To the Loreto Debating Team who fought so stoically against the Villanova team in last Friday’s entertaining all age Villa-Loreto debate. The Loreto team had the harder case (I believe) having to argue against the notion that ‘women are the stronger sex’. I congratulate Villanova on their win for the affirmative ‘that women are the stronger sex’. Thank you gentlemen, we concur!

To all involved in ‘Live and Wired’. It was a fabulous community event and a wonderful way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon on the Deshon Oval in celebration of 85 Years. Particular congratulations to the students (band members and singers) and the music teachers and tutors. The music was fantastic! Thank you for sharing your God given talents with us all. Particular thanks go to the Music Support Group and the P&F stall convenors and volunteers for their hardwork and generosity.

I also especially wish to thank Mrs Kerry Bull for her significant contribution in co-ordinating many aspects of this year’s event but in particular for the heritage photo display boards and the ‘fashion through the ages’ parade. The models did a great job as did the comperes.

Finally, I wish to thank the many Loreto Staff including the Facilities team; the Music Department; Catherine Shipton; Emma Beach; Ben Langford and Paul Svoboda.

To all competitors in last weekend’s Queensland Junior Volleyball School’s Cup competition and especially to the Youth Girls 3 (Year 8) team who were silver medallists. Well done girls, with special thanks to Mrs Gore for her coordination.

Reminder of Student Withdrawal Policy

As the end of another year draws near, families are asked to notify the College, at your earliest convenience, if your daughter(s) will not be continuing at Loreto College in 2014. Families are reminded of the College’s student withdrawal policy requiring one term’s notice in writing of any intention to withdraw a student from the College. Formal notice is to be given no later than the first day of the term at the end of which it is intended that the student would leave. In default of such notice, one term’s fees will be payable. Your assistance with this communication would be appreciated so 2014 classes can be finalised before the end of year and appropriate positions can be allocated to girls on our current waiting list.

Art News The Loreto Art Show provided an excellent opportunity for the Art students to show case their work and share it with their family and the wider community. The many positive comments about the quality and the diversity of the work were affirmation of the students ability to take on their tasks with creativity imagination and innovation. I would like to thank the Art staff Maria Ashton and Michelle Davidson for their commitment to creating a learning environment where this sort of achievement is made possible. I would also like to thank Karen Hamlet for her amazing organizational skills and Mark Onions and Brendan Bartlett for their assistance with rearranging furniture which ensured the success of the event. Career News Debating News Volunteer work available for Year 10 – 12 students

As many of you are aware, The Trading Circle is a Not For Profit, Ethical and Fair Trade organisation empowering women to

trade out of poverty. Everyone volunteers for a different reason - to gain experience, give back to the community, share a

skill, make a difference, have spare time and enjoy being part of a dynamic team. With Christmas and the summer break just

around the corner, it is a busy time of year and we are looking for volunteers to help out in our store at Paddington with

customer service, gift wrapping, unpacking stock, merchandising, preparing merchandise for events or helping at events if

you choose. Shopping and Volunteering with The Trading Circle makes a real difference to improving the lives of women

and children living in poverty. If you are interested in helping out these school holidays we would love to hear from you.

Debating News Last Friday afternoon Loreto debated Villanova in a “friendly” debate. The boys had to argue the affirmative on the topic That

Women are the Stronger Sex. In a split decision, the debate was awarded to the Villanova team. Congratulations to Victoria

Smith in Year 8, who was our first speaker, to Leah Casey (second) and to Madeline Blanchfield (third). All girls spoke

convincingly and there was much humour provided by all speakers. Thanks to Anna King and to Madeline Lloyd who acted

as timekeeper and chairperson respectively.

It was fantastic to see the number of Loreto girls who stayed behind after school to support their peers. The Villanova boys

acknowledged the tremendous spirit shown by Loreto at this event. Thanks too to Mrs Valentine who helped adjudicate on

the day.

It was wonderful to witness the debating skills of all the speakers and I know that all the spectators were most impressed

and entertained. Hopefully this will become an annual event. Mr McKinlay - Debating Coordinator

Language Department News French

This week has been a busy week for French students with the French immersion afternoon and the

confirmation that our French students will be visiting us a year earlier!

On Thursday 17 October, eleven Year 10 French students participated in the MLTAQ French

immersion afternoon at St Peter’s Lutheran College in Indooroopilly. The afternoon gave students the

opportunity to meet other students of French in the Brisbane area and to practise their French

language skills in a variety of activities. The final activity, a fashion design contest and fashion parade,

was a favourite amongst boys and girls alike. Loreto College students had a wonderful afternoon and

we look forward to being able to participate in similar immersion activities again next year.

We have also received news from St Joseph de Tivoli, our sister school in

Bordeaux, to say that they will now be visiting us in the February before we go

to visit them in November/December. This means we are expecting a group of

18 French students to be visiting us in February 2014 and preparations for our

return visit to France in November/December 2014 are already underway!

Japanese

On Wednesday 16 October, the Year 12 Japanese students had the privilege of attending

the Japanese Dinner at Sunny Breeze Restaurant in Sunnybank. The dinner is a memorable

evening for Year 12 Japanese students, sharing a meal together before they graduate in a

few short weeks. The dinner gave students the opportunity to practise their chop stick skills

and to try a range of Japanese foods such as Sushi, Teppanyaki, Takoyaki and Green Tea

Ice-cream! Thank you to Hada Sensai for organising this lovely evening.



German

The Senior German dinner was held on Tuesday 15 October at the

Black Forest German Restaurant in Highgate Hill. Twenty-one

excited German students attended and enjoyed trying authentic

German cuisine such as Rostbratwürstchen, Sauerkraut, Spätzle

and Apfelstrudel.

The countdown is on for students travelling to Germany at the end

of this year, with only 38 days until we depart. Lunchtime

Conversation Classes have begun and we look forward to seeing our travellers and their parents

at the final trip meeting on Tuesday 22 October at 7pm in room 402. Amy Stewart - Languages Department

St Vincent de Paul News

We have a busy term of events ahead. On Thursday 17th October some of our Executive

and possible future Executive members will be meeting with students from Villanova

College to discuss a combined project next year. On Thursday 24 we help out at the

Nursery Road State Special School. Fundraising finishes on the 8th November with an ice

cream stall run by Yr 10 members. We have changed our venue for our annual breakup. It

will be held at Grill’d (Camp Hill) on November 6 at 6.30 until 8.30. Elections on the 18th

will see a new Executive and Assistants for 2014. Please assist us with our Christmas

Appeal : Christmas presents for the elderly recipients at Holland Park Meals on

Wheels. The collection box is in the office and unisex presents are most appropriate

with packets of soft jubes/lollies being the favourite. Thank you for your support and generosity. Some of our members

will deliver these gifts in person just before Christmas Day. Our last activity before the College breaks for holidays will be

attendance at the Graduation Dance for the Nursery Road State Special School on Friday 15 November.

We ask the Loreto Community for your support with our final raffle for the year. The parents of Ciane Galanti-Guilfoyle (Yr 11

St Vincent de Paul President) have very generously donated two lots of prizes. The first portion was raffled earlier in the year.

We are now raffling the second lot. Tickets are $1 per ticket or 3 for $2. Students can purchase tickets from the sellers who

will going around at lunchtimes. Ciane has done a wonderful job of wrapping and presenting the prize, which can be seen in

Social Justice Council A sincere thank you must be extended to the Loreto Community: students, staff and families, for the incredible display of

generosity regarding the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child appeal. Over 30 shoeboxes, filled with gifts by

students, and countless loose gifts, provided by staff, were donated. Such gifts will bring hope and joy to young girls in

South-east Asia and the South Pacific this Christmas.


Music News Live & Wired On Sunday the weather held off and the Live & Wired Music Festival went off - what a great evening of entertainment! The groups from Loreto and Villanova played exceptionally, guest artists – The Moose and the Craig Martin Swing Band – were fantastic, and the fashion parade jumping castle and international food stalls rounded out the event. Well done to all the students and conductors and a big thank you to the Music Support Group, the P & F Association, the school groundsmen, Kerrie Bull, Emma Beach and Catherine Shipton for all their help, promotion and organisation.

IMPORTANT UPDATE – Due to a clash of venues, the Concert Band One, Junior Choir and Senior Choir will only

rehearse together on Thursday 31 October next week (not also on Tuesday as previously advertised). Senior Choir will rehearse on Tuesday at the normal time but in 501/503 (top level of Mulwith).

Guitar Ensembles The Guitar Ensembles have two big, yet exciting, weeks coming up. Firstly, this Thursday and Friday are the Grigoryan Nights concerts. There are still some tickets available for these two concerts, so if you have not yet booked get on to www.trybooking.com/61384 and do so! We want to help Villanova sell out both these concerts as they are offering our students a fantastic event in which to be involved. Don’t forget the following important details: Thursday 24 October Sound check followed by first performance - Students to meet in the MWC Mezzanine directly after Period 7, Loreto will provide coach transport to Villanova. Members of Concert Band One and Junior Choir should attend their regular rehearsals and organise own transport to Villanova at 5 pm. Students will need to bring Performance Uniforms to school. Villanova will provide a pizza dinner for all students between the sound check and the concert. Students have re-served seating for the second half of the concert, so do not need to purchase tickets.

Friday 25 October Second Performance – Please arrive in Performance Uniform at Villanova by 6pm, HAVING HAD DINNER ALREADY as no food will be provided this night. Students will be able to watch the second half of the concert via video in the Playhouse if they wish, or may leave once they have finished performing (approximately 8:30 pm).

A combined Guitar Ensemble (groups 1 & 2) will then perform together at the Music Night the following week. To help them finalise their music, Guitar Ensemble One students are asked to come along to the GE2 rehearsal on the morning of Tuesday 29 October (the week of the concert) instead of their regular Thursday rehearsal. They will also play for the school on assembly that Wednesday!

Congratulations to the following students who have recently completed AMEB examinations – Rachel Dalton (Grade 2 Clarinet – Credit), Austen Whitewood (Grade 5 Clarinet – Credit) and Emi Biazos (Grade 5 Theory – Pass).

Music Night Our final performance concert for this year is the Music Night on Friday 1 November (6pm to 9pm). All groups who did not perform at Live & Wired will take the stage on this night. Final arrival details and the full concert program will be published in next week’s newsletter. However, as ever, all performing students should expect to arrive by 5:30pm to move to warm up areas, and are expected to stay for the duration of the concert. Any students with difficulties should see the Coordinator of Music urgently with a written note from their parents so that we have time to come to some appropriate arrangement. Performing students are also reminded to bring a small plate of food for the interval supper.

Mega-Raffle Don’t forget to sell your Mega-Raffle tickets! Get the booklet stub and money back to the music office straight away to enter the Assembly Draw for iTunes vouchers! The Mega Raffle is the Music Support Group’s main fundraiser for the year and money taken goes directly back to students through tuition scholarships. Please support your music ensembles selling your booklet by Wednesday 30 October.

Support Music at Grilled! During October, you can help the Loreto Music Support Group simply by eating at Grilled Samuel Street. Order a burger, make sure you collect your bottle-top token and place it in the jar representing Loreto. There will be three groups represented and the one that receives the most support will be given $300 from the Grilled: Funding the Local Community program. Room to Read Fundraiser for Sri Lankan Girls’ Education

Last Friday evening, 130 people raised $5800 to assist the education of Sri Lankan girls - all whilst having fun! We held our breath as Ashton's Circus performers balanced on intricately stacked chairs; we enjoyed the graceful Sri Lankan dancers and ate delicious Sri Lankan food from the Coorparoo restaurant, Fire and Spice.

I was delighted to catch up with students, parents and staff, and am grateful to the capable Tech Crew students, Kiah Smith and Awien Lee, and Loreto staff members who assisted with the set-up.

Room to Read is deeply appreciative of the generosity of Loreto College for donating their wonderful facility for the fundraiser. I was most touched when Mrs Hamilton said that Mary Ward would be pleased with

Public Speaking

This week we have seven students who are entering the ESU Public Speaking Competition. The girls have been preparing

since last term and we have been enjoying highly entertaining lunch time meetings. I thank them for their commitment and

enthusiasm. Sophia Dabinett (8Red) is speaking on Monday night to To Be an Australian while Aisland Bell (9Green), Kitty

Lloyd (9 White), Lauren Michael (9 Red), Priyanka Mirchandani (9 Blue), Alex White (9 Blue) and Austen Whitewood (9 Gold)

speak on Wednesday night to The Networked You. Each of the Year 9 girls have taken their speech from a different

perspective and it should be a highly entertaining evening.

Venue: ESU House, 249 Coronation Drive, Milton.

Times: Each participant is on at different times either at 5.30pm, 7.00pm or 8.30pm.

We wish the girls all the best and again commend them for their positive approach.

Student Representative Council—Naming of Buildings Competition

This term the SRC are working on a new project to name existing and future facilities. The facilities which are available for

naming include the new building and the Hospitality Kitchen which will be opened in 2015. In addition, this competition

extends to the naming of the existing pool and Main Classroom Building. Students, staff and community members are invited

to suggest a name relevant to Mary Ward’s friends or her story, the history of Loreto Coorparoo or the Loreto Australia story.

ACHPER Sports breakfast A group of Year 12 girls (sport leaders) attended the ACHPER QLD Annual Women in Sport Breakfast last Wednesday. They

had an opportunity to listen to an inspiring team of guest speakers share tips for success and stories of courage and

determination. The speakers included: Australian Rower, Jessica Hall, Australian Cricketer, Jodie Fields and Australian

Rugby League player, Jo Barrett. It was a very successful and enjoyable morning.

Results from Round 4

Intermediate A (Gold) lost to All Hallows’ 36-14.

This was a carry over match from Round 4 as the 10’s were on camp. Loreto started strongly holding All Hallows’ - 8 all

close to half time. Georgia Garrett and Georgia Johnson combined well to produce an excellent pass to lay up scoring

options. As the game progressed, All Hallow’s were more determined at the ball and fitness and speed let Loreto down.

Overall, a pleasing game with signs of improvement in both attack and defence.

Results: Round 5

Open A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 56-34

While Loreto were not the victors, both coach and players were happy with their performance. Lourdes Hill had several strong

representative players and Loreto did a good job limiting their attack. In the 3rd

quarter Loreto fought back strongly and closed

the scoring gap. Shooting accuracy was pleasing and there is more confidence displayed by all players.

Open B defeated Mt St Michal’s 67-12

As the score indicates, this was a very one sided encounter from the onset. Loreto had stronger skills and were more drilled

as a team. Rebounding was strong and while restrictions were placed on dribbling and shooting in the 2nd

half of the match,

Loreto continued to dominate. Awien Lee, Samantha Papas and Erin Stafford scored many strong baskets.

Intermediate A (Gold) defeated Our Lady’s 42-2

Loreto were able to secure their first win of the season and a very deserving one! After playing a match on the previous day,

confidence and momentum was high. Loreto combined well and successfully produced easy turn overs to score quick bas-

kets. All players contributed points to the score. Half court defence was also used to great effect. Julia Logan, Stephanie

Samios and Isobella Scott had excellent games.

Intermediate A (Blue) defeated Lourdes Hill 29-26

This was a very close match which could have gone either way. Laura Schenk, Jessica Galpin and Zoe Sever rebounded

well, while Vicky Flores and Brigitte Mastry were strong in defence. Loreto will need to continue to work on playing more as a

team to ensure they maintain consistent pressure on their opponents.

Junior A were defeated by Mt.Alvernia 33-26

Loreto got off to a very slow start and enabled Mt.Alvernia to develop a lead. The second half was much stronger from all

players and Loreto fought back well. Georgia Brown played strongly in defence, boxing out the opposition. Eliza Greene was

accurate with her lay ups. It is pleasing to see that skills and team work continue to improve each week.

Nyree Wood - Basketball Coordinator

Qld Junior Volleyball Schools’ Cup

Last weekend 33 girls represented Loreto at the State wide Junior Schools Cup Volleyball Competition. It was a wonderful

opportunity for the girls to develop their skills, experience the intensity of a carnival, bond as a team and learn how to score,

referee and perform line duty. Thank you to the coaches: Zach Voll, Margaux Page and Mrs Gold as well as teacher

assistance from Mrs Nielson and Mr Swanson. I am also very appreciative of the parent support over the weekend on the

side lines, with transport and for their encouragement of the teams. Well done to all girls.

Mrs Kirsty Gore, Volleyball Coordinator

Results: Intermediate Girls 1 - The first game of the weekend was against Woodcrest College, although the girls lost 2 - 0 sets, an invigorating pep talk prepared the girls for an outstanding game against Craigslea. The team showed immense improvement, showing off their communication skills and driving determination to win. Although defeated again, the girls were proud of the effort they put in. Next up was a game against Harristown. Throughout the match the team tried improving what went wrong in the previous game, they soon found out that serving needed more practice. After a night’s sleep the Junior Schools Cup volleyball team was ready to take on Marsden. It was a strong match between the two teams but in the end Marsden won



After a five hour break the team congregated at the centre once again with a new found hope to defeat Redlands. However we were out played 2-0. By Saturday the girls had winning a set as the main priority. Coach, Zach, soon reminded the team about what sport is really about, having fun and trying your best. With this in mind the girls came out on top winning 2 - 0 against Cannon Hill. Overall the team showed incredible resilience and skill, they are proud of the efforts they put in and the

way the team represented Loreto. Kassidy Graham - Year 10

Intermediate Girls 3 - The Intermediate Girls Three team had a blast at the Queensland Junior Schools Cup Volleyball competition last weekend. With most of the girls only starting volleyball last year, it was an amazing opportunity for us to develop our skills and improve our game play throughout the matches. Despite losing a team member in the first match due to a foot injury, the girls carried on and played remarkably well. Special mention must go to our coach, Margaux Page, who made the weekend even more enjoyable. Thank you Margaux for your encouragement and guidance – we couldn’t have done it without you. With Vicky Flores leading the team as captain, the Intermediate Three team consisted of Sophie Freedman, Frances Wong, Clare Lyons, Sophie Hinchliffe, Paige Paremain, Sidonie Smith, Riley Adams, Lydia Weir, Julia Beiers and myself. Thank you to Mrs Gore and parents for a super support crew! Placing 17

th overall in

the competition, Loreto would’ve been proud of our team work, sportsmanship and spirit throughout the weekend. Go

Youth Group 3 – This was an extraordinary experience for all the girls in the Youth 3 team. All of the girls played exceptionally well and I think we could all agree that we loved it! We have to thank our amazing coach Mrs Gold as she took the time to coach us brilliantly, as well as juggling a new child! Thankyou Mrs Gold!!! Our skills and understanding of the game of Volleyball improved greatly as did our team spirit. The weekend has definitely been something to remember and,

coming in second, we are all so grateful to have had such an amazing team and coach. Ella Smyth - Year 8

Touch Football This Week’s Draw: Round 6 - 23 October

Results: Round 5 Open A vs Brigidine Won 5 - 4 Quick attacking plays provided the basis for aggressive forward movement. This was coupled with solid defensive work by all

players, particularly on the line. Emme Ball played outstandingly in both phases of the game. A well-deserved win!

Open B vs Lourdes Hill Won 6 - 1

Strong games from Sam Firrell, Eloise Carroll, Sarah Toohey and Nicole Kassos helped to achieve this solid win. All players

need to talk loudly and continually in both attack and defence to let their teammate know where to pass or where to move.

Inter A vs St Rita’s Lost 3 - 5

The girls had a very slow start and were down 3 – 1 at half time. There was a turnaround in their game and they played hard

to be within 1 point narrowly missing out on a touchdown to level the scores with a couple of minutes to go. However despite

their efforts the girls went down 5-3.

Inter B vs St Rita’s Won 14 - 3

Great pressure in defence caused many turnovers which were quickly capitalised on. Rucking was crisp and this created

many attacking plays. Christina Stephanos played exceptionally well. A fantastic team win!

The players had a slow start to the game, but showed greater speed and focus in the second half to win the game. Leah

Carey led by example with accurate talk in both attack and defence. McKenna Buckley rucked well and ably caught balls that

were poorly passed. Overall, a great win!

Defensively, all players united to move forward on their player and then pushed back hard to defend again. In attack there

was continual ball movement with players running at the gaps. Communication was exceptional!

Good attacking games from Halle Wade and Jessica Aitken. All players tried to move more in defence but were caught out

twice. Overall, a big improvement.

Jun A vs Brigidine Won 4 - 0

All players worked well with a vast improvement in rucking. Great games were displayed by Tian Smith, Natalie Shay and

Audrey McCosker. Overall, a great improvement in game play was noted. Well done!

Jun B vs Lourdes Hill Won 4 - 3

Impressive rucking from Charlotte Coorey and a great touchdown from Gabbi Miotti helped the team to a good win. Well done!

Waterpolo

The girls have Round 2 water polo games this week. The venue for all teams is at the Somerville House swimming pool. Each

player MUST be at the venue 30 minutes prior to the game, with full sports uniform, togs, cap and mouth guard.

Please check the Brisbane Water Polo Association for the games for Week 3.

Under 13’s - Had a great win against Mt St Michael’s 10 – 7. They went out hard, and taking the foot off the pedal in the

second half, were still comfortable winners. Special mention to Tess Le Febour for playing in theU14’s.

Under 14 - Last Saturday’s game was a tough game for the team. The girls lost 12 - 2 to the All Hallows' team who had a full

team of reserves while we only had two. Despite our loss the girls played a great game utilizing some of the techniques taught

at last week’s training session. A big congratulations to Charlotte Coorey for scoring our 2 goals of the game and thanks to

Tess from the under 13s for playing up in our game despite her team playing at the same time. Coach: Caitlyn Chambers

Under 15 - Had their first win for the season against St Margaret’s 7 – 2 They overcame an incredibly aggressive St Mar-

garet team. The girls, including the two new members to the team, played outstandingly well both physically and

Under 16 - Had a full side for the second week back including some new players. They continued their performance from last

week with a very comfortable win against St Margaret’s. Coach: James Duffy

Under 18 - Played a scratch match against home side Warriors. Next week we are set to see the two teams combine, making

Water polo training for Fitness - Term 4

All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions for Water polo at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 season.

These sessions are held on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. Please register at the sports notice

board. There is no cost for the swim sessions

Majestic Park Running Girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Andrew Lulham and Clare Geraghty on Monday and Tuesday afternoon at 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. The group meets in the MWC in PE uniform and please bring a cap and $5.00 for the session.

Mia Page (Year 11) and Georgia Johnson (Yr 10) were selected to attend the Queensland Sports Woman of the Year

Breakfast on Friday 18 October at the Brisbane City Hall. It was an opportunity for the girls to listen to outstanding female

athletes stories of challenges and triumphs in life as an elite athlete.
