HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!

We had a visit from a St. John's Ambulance first aid trainer on Friday. Students learned about DRSABCD and how to perform compressions (for CPR).

I learned how to do CPR. It was a fun session & nice to know those things - Emma

I enjoyed giving the

dummies CPR. I a lot more confident if I had to give someone CPR - Daniel

This week on Tuesday was Halloween. Year 6 students decided to organise a Healthy Halloween Day with monies raised to go towards various charities of their specifications to aid school students. All the students dressed up and were super excited to parade their outfit to everyone at the morning assembly. We have been learning about how Halloween originated in Northern Europe – and seeing this on the world map. Students learnt about how Halloween started as

a festival at the end of the winter and it was also to remember those who have passed on from this world – resulting in spooky outfits and dress ups. Here is what some of the students had to say about their outfits and Halloween… Finn – My outfit was scary. It was a vampire, Count Nightwing. He is a Goosebumps character. Halloween is where you go trick or treating and also remembering about people who have died, good and bad people. Levi – I was a joker. I had a mask but I didn’t wear it. I came as the joker because he is scary on Halloween. Vivien - I came as a devil. I liked the devil wings so that’s why I wore that. I had to choose between a devil and a

fairy and I picked the devil because I liked the cheeky face and pretending to fly. Luci – I came as a dead and evil pumpkin. I chose that because it’s scary. I put face paint on my face and my sister put pretend blood on me.

On Friday we were visited by Kellie from St John Ambulance who delivered a First Aid in Schools program. Students shared and discussed what to do in an emergency before being

involved in some role play activities.

St John First Aid Last Friday Kelly from St John First Aid came to Nilma and talked about first aid to us. if you see anyone on the ground you should check for danger, response, send for help, airway and breathing. By Beth. On Friday Kelly came in the school to teach

us first aid. Kelly said if you see anyone on the ground you check it is safe. If there is no response you put the left arm on the right

shoulder then you lift the closest leg up like a triangle. Turn them furthest away then kept the leg in the same position. Then put their head up, open the mouth up so that their airway is clear. You might need to get spew out of their mouth if not breathing! Scoop it out with your hands (with gloves if you have them) from Shila and Jessie

It’s been an exciting week for many as we celebrated Halloween. I trust that you had fun making your costumes and sweeping through the streets and courts in the hopes of gaining great quantities of candy

for free. We joined the fun as a couple of groups of our local kids knocked and trick or treated us at the door. It was always good to see an older family member standing at the back or at the letter box to make sure everyone was safe.

Some of the dress ups were related to Halloween (or All Hollows Day which is the start (31/10 -2/11) of the Holy season: candles are lit to honour those who have died, they are called ‘the saints’ who have

attained heaven and prayers are said for those who have not yet arrived. The 1/11 is a holy day of Obligation where Christians attend a Mass at Church and 2/11 , depending on the countries tradition, grave sites are weeded, crosses are dusted and flowers are placed.) See if your costume was fits in with the real tradition.

I found a site on google “Halloween and All Saints Day explained with LEGO” which is educative and factual in a fun way. Enjoy the rest of the week and the long weekend to follow. Be safe on our roads.

Blessings
