Just remember that ALL of these activities are planned and executed by either Rabbi Katz or by the many Temple volunteers who share their expertise and a LOT of their time. ● FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY:

JEWISH GRAVITYUntil Einstein, we had understood the “how” of gravity. All objects have a gravitational pull. Those with a greater mass exert a stronger field. But the “why” of this effect was not known. Einstein discovered the reason. Imagine placing a bowling ball in the middle of a bed. Since the ball’s weight makes a sloping indentation in the mattress, a marble placed near the sphere will be drawn to it.

Now imagine the bed is invisible. According to Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, the weight (mass) of stars and planets curve space around them in the same way the bowling ball curves the mattress around it. Though Isaac Newton had maintained space was constant and unchanging, Einstein claimed space’s curvature or warping was what created gravitational fields. His theory received definitive proof when, during a solar eclipse in 1918, light from nearby stars was observed to be deflected by the space warp created by the sun’s mass. Each of us occupies space. We also, in our own way, have the power to exert a kind of gravitational pull. But its nature is not so much governed by physics as ethics. The question is whether people gravitate toward us or seek to resist the pull and move on. What do we do that creates positive gravity versus a negative one? So too, what draws and repels us from others? Discerning this kind of gravity is central to our growth and self-understanding. Some human beings can use their capacity for manipulation, self-aggrandizement, fulmination, and deception to draw others into their orbit for nefarious ends. History is strewn with them, from Haman to Hitler. Others, though,

use their personal integrity, authentic compassion, unselfish imagination and aptitude for persuasion to attract people to accomplish noble purposes. It is in our power as individuals, communities, and even nations to exert the kind of pull that will bend the moral time-space continuum toward a certain curvature. This choice is, ultimately, the essence of human freedom. Judaism, as well, carries weight in its own kind of space. In fact, its mass as a locus of spirituality, learning, and culture has bent the religious time-space continuum in significant ways. Though buffeted for millennia by great constellational tribulation, it is not only a survivor planet, but one that continues to engage in profound orbits. In many respects, Jewish convictions and values are still very much at the center of much of the world’s Western-oriented moral cosmology. Yet, for Jews themselves, Jewish gravity is no longer quite as comprehensive as it once was. There is now, so to speak, a spectrum of pull. For some, the pull is primarily a reflection of Israel or the Holocaust. For others, cultural affinity and social justice pursuits are the motivating factors. While there are Jews for whom Judaism is virtually their only orbit, for many it is only one of several

(Cont. on Pg. 4)

PAGE 4 I WWW.TBI-LBK.ORG

in which they circulate. In the wake of the 2013 Pew Report on contemporary Jewish America there may be alarm that legions of Jews today are seeking to defy Jewish gravity altogether in thinking that Judaism is drawing them into a kind of black hole of spiritual antiquation. However, I strongly discount this overstated portrayal. Just because Jewish gravity may not look the way it once did this hardly means it no longer operates as a telling force. The organized Jewish community has to do a better job conveying not simply that Jewish gravity remains important, but why. Paraphrasing the opening sequence of the original Star Trek television series, this will require boldly going theologically, liturgically, and spiritually where no Jewish community has ever gone before. I take that back. Actually, Jewish communities have already done this. The emergence of Hasidism and Reform Judaism in the 18th and 19th centuries enabled the preservation of our religion for many Jews. By changing our perspective of what Judaism could be, Jewish faith was not threatened, but enhanced and extended.

The capacity for rethinking, reimagining, and repurposing is what has kept the Jewish planet in a stable orbit throughout the generations. Though we can’t escape gravity, that doesn’t mean we still can’t creatively transform it.

A DIALOGUE ON DEATHWe are all familiar with the famous statement, “Nothing is certain except death and taxes.” But while we know a lot about taxes, what do we really know about death? Not in terms of physical death, but spiritually and emotionally? What does death mean to us now, when we are alive? What informs our approach to it? “The script of life,” Martin Buber reflected, “is so unspeakably beautiful because death looks over our shoulder.” Do you agree? How conscious are we of death in our everyday lives? How does it affect our pursuits and well-being?

Rabbi Katz is offering an opportunity to share about this sensitive but often avoided topic and address the challenging questions it raises on Tuesdays May 26 and June 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Temple. This dialogue is not intended for people of any particular age in their lives. Whether young or old we all must confront our attitudes and feelings about death.

Please contact Rabbi Katz if interested in attending.

EARLY SHABBAT SUMMER SERVICES AT 5:30 P.M. RESUME MAY 15

MAZEL FINDS A HOME & A MISSIONWhen a friend returned from Florida with a service dog from Southeastern Guide Dogs, Jared Weber saw the difference and said,“That’s for me!” This spring, Mazel, the canine Temple Beth Israel adopted through Southeastern Guide Dogs was commissioned, in conjunction with Southeastern’s Veterans Program, to serve Jared in Draper, Utah.Weber’s four years in an Army intelligence unit included deployment to Iraq. He then spent six years as a contractor in Afghanistan and Iraq. His lingering PTSD makes juggling work and raising three active boys a big challenge. “My kids want to do things but don’t suggest it because it’s hard on me,” he acknowledges. “With Mazel, I’m more calm. I’ll be able to do those things with a better attitude, and hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy it instead of just endure it.”Many thanks to the generosity of TBI members for making Mazel’s service and friendship to Jared possible.

BAILA MILLER OFFERS SUMMER PROGRAMS

Baila Miller’s popularity among TBI members and beyond is no secret. She offers high-quality continuing education opportunities that explore fascinating dimensions of art, music, cinema, and Yiddishkeit. In addition to the course she offered in this year’s Miniversity, we are pleased to have Baila share her expansive cultural knowledge this summer at the Temple. The sessions are free to Temple members and $10.00 for non- members. All sessions presented from 2:00-3:15 p.m. (Read details below). For centuries, Jewish Artists made limited contributions to the art world. This was primarily due to the Torah’s prohibition against making “graven images” and also because Jewish apprentices were excluded from European guilds. However, the emancipation and increasing secularization of 19th century European Jewry unleashed vast opportunities for expression. Within decades, Jewish artists, film makers, sculptors, and photographers had made profound contributions in their respective fields.

UPCOMING MOVIES AT TBI(All movies will be shown at 2:00 p.m. Due to copyright restrictions, only TBI members are able to attend.) Thursday, May 21 Winner of seven Mexican Academy Awards and acclaimed by critics, Nora’s Will is a comedy like nothing you’ve seen before. This unique tale of lost faith and eternal love from one of Mexico’s most talented new filmmakers tells how, when Jose’s ex-wife Nora dies right before Passover, Jose is forced to stay with her body until she can be properly put to rest. But he then realizes he is part of Nora’s plan to bring her family back together for one last Passover feast, leading José to reexamine and rediscover their undying love. The Los Angeles Times calls Nora’s Will “Tremendously appealing” and Leonard Maltin describes it as “pure enjoyment.” In Spanish with English subtitles. Tuesday, June 2 Winner of the coveted Camera d’Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival, Jellyfish is a richly imaginative portrait of three different emotionally adrift Tel Aviv women. Batya, a struggling waitress, cares for a mysterious child, newlywed Keren nurses a broken leg and a ruined honeymoon, and a Filipino worker, Joy, tries to support her son back home. With striking cinematography and moving performances, Jellyfish is both a witty and warm reflection on making connections and confronting personal destiny. In Hebrew with English subtitles. Thursday, June 18 When Israel invaded Lebanon in June of 1982, the World Cup was occurring in Spain. Though an Israeli soldier has tickets for the tournament in Barcelona, he is on duty in Lebanon. Things go from bad to worse when he is captured by a group of retreating PLO fighters en route to Beirut. The Israeli’s only solace is that their leader happens to be a big soccer fan. Filled with humor, wit and violence, Cup Final is a tale of shared humanity.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Temple Beth Israel had four Shabbat dinners this year with an additional one planned for May 1st. Catered by Michael’s On East, the food was delicious. Members enjoyed the socializing and we had so many more people attending our Friday Shabbat services. We plan to continue these dinners in the fall. During the summer months Rabbi Katz will arrange Shabbat dinners from various restaurants in the area.

January 11th was our spectacular Birthday Bash. Many thanks to Nancy Cohen and Sylvia Pastor for their hard work to make this such a special evening. Watch for next year’s gala to be held on February 14, 2016, Valentine’s Day.

Our Sedar on April 3 was attended by 136 people. It was a wonderful experience for young and old. Two of Bob and Judy Vigdor’s grandchildren asked the four questions. Michael’s On East catered a delicious meal. We had a brief service and additional musical selections prepared by Ann Moe and sung by Becca Hill.

SOCIAL ACTION

Our newly formed committee: Marion Levine, Chair; Alice Blueglass, Lois Barson, Lynn Burton, Marge Heller, Betty Levi, Ruth Maas, Sue Morin, Lillian Sands, Barbara Siegel and Rabbi Katz presented our activities at a social action Shabbat on April 10, 2015.

We had a wonderful receptive audience and many members and visitors have stepped up to the plate to help us reach our goals. We are collecting items for the Visible Men’s Academy, a charter school for boys in Bradenton. Requested items are crayons, pencils, backpacks, black belts for uniforms and books (e.g Dr. Seuss, Harry Potter, and Lightening Thief). We are also collecting nutrient food bars for the Children’s Healthy Pantry. There are boxes in the social hall decorated by Alice Blueglass for you to deposit your contributions. We also have a container for the All Faiths Food Bank.

As you are going north think of depositing canned goods and unopened boxes of food. There are 21,000 children in need of food over the summer when schools are closed.

MEN’S CLUBThe Men’s Club year end event was its annual Bar BQ. The event was held at the Bay Isle Beach Club on Longboat Key on Sunday, April 12 and was attended by over 50 members of the congregation.

During the past season the Club, whose membership totaled 69, sponsored ten events, which generated a gross income of over $7,000 and a net income of over $4,000. Most of the profits will be donated to a variety of local charities including $5,000 to the Temple’s operating fund.

Plans are under way for next year’s programing, which will include the annual Shalom Again Dinner in November, a series of four Lunches with the Rabbi, a Jazz Night concert, a West Coast Black Theater performance, a baseball outing and the annual year end Bar BQ. A membership drive will be held in August or September in hopes of attracting a larger number of Club members.

Our annual Men’s Club Barbeque was held on Sunday April 12 in a picture-perfect environment at the Bay Isles Beach Club. Delightful breezes from the Gulf kept us all cool and happy.

Featured on our spectacular menu were hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken with all the side dishes. Russell Kennedy and Judy Goldstein provided the entertainment. Desserts were homemade.

So how did it all go? Pretty well, actually. We even had a 50-50 raffle which, let’s face it, someone else won other than me. We thank the Men’s Club for all the work they did to make this a success and we thank God for the fabulous weather, or maybe just the weatherman(?) It was a lovely afternoon.

QUICK ACTION SOCIAL ACTION

Our tradition tells us we should always be quick to perform a mitzvah. For example, when called for an aliyah to the Torah, one should come to

the bimah with alacrity.

At Shabbat services in April, members of TBI’s Social Action Committee shared about the

committee’s efforts to assist the Visible Men Academy (VMA) in Bradenton as well as the Children’s Healthy Pantry. The congregation learned that three boxes, one for notebooks, crayons and pencils, another for children’s

books for boys, and another for healthy snack bars, had been placed in the Social Hall to receive donations for VMA and the Pantry

The following morning, Jo Ann Goldwater came by the Temple to deliver crayons, pencils and

snack bars. Alice and Murray Blueglass quickly purchased and contributed books. Jo Ann and the Blueglasses are hardly alone. Many of us remember to bring items to the Temple like

cans of food and toiletries for those in need. But our membership could still do more.

Don’t hesitate. Take the initiative in assisting VMA and the Pantry. Be quick to perform the

mitzvah of helping these worthy organizations. Seize the moment for acts of Tikkun Olam.

- Happy Birthday! -

One of the joys of the Jewish calendar is that it has kept its ties to the ancient agricultural cycle. We are in the midst of counting the Omer, which ties our Passover spring celebration to the harvest of the first yields. Just so you can calibrate your secular calendar and your ritual calendar, Shavuot falls on Memorial Day Weekend. We will mark the holiday with a Tikuun Layl Shavuot, an Evening study session held Saturday Evening May 23 at the Temple and our Holiday service Sunday Morning, May 24.

Torah & Haftorah ReadingTechnology is making it easier and easier for us to learn. Check out www.pockettorah.com. It’s a free app for your iOS or Android device. It has every Torah and Haftorah reading and the trope for all the special portions. Try it out and choose a portion that you want to read or chant.Or renew your acquaintance with your Bar or Bat Mitzvah portion. Make that portion yours and Ruth Engman will joyfully schedule you to share your accomplishment with the congregation on the appropriate Shabbat morning. We read the Torah and the Haftorah every Shabbat morning, so that gives you fifty two chances to be an honored part of our weekly celebration.

Music at Services The budget approved for next year has a reduction in the amount we spend on Ritual music. Unless there are very specific grants that you make, here are the cuts we have worked out with our Choir Director and Organist, Dr. Ann Stephenson Moe. Shabbat morning services will have music provided by an unaccompanied soloist. Our choir and soloists on Friday evening Shabbat services will be unchanged, except that there will be no Choir rehearsal during the week. For those of you who have had trouble making a weekday rehearsal, this represents an opportunity to join the choir. The choir will rehearse for an hour before services each week. Ann Moe can teach anyone anything, so even if you haven’t sung in a choir before, join us next fall or when you return. The High Holiday music will be wonderful this year, with Cantor Robert Marinoff returning, and a volunteer choir supplemented by our soloists. Even if you are not accustomed to being here for Yom Tov, consider joining us. September is beautiful here in Paradise.

● NEW FINANCIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE

President Kathy Brooks has appointed an ad hoc Planning Committee to focus on the fundamental question, “What do we want the Temple to be five years from now?”

The impetus for its creation was the recent unsolicited proposal to buy the land to the south of the Temple. Realistically, the Temple is not prepared at this time to respond thoughtfully. The developer has been thanked for his interest and told not to expect a formal response until the fall after the membership has returned and the committee has completed its work. In that regard the committee will be meeting in the interim. It has much homework to do. The focus will be on the administrative side of the Temple’s activities. The religious aspects of the Temple are not within the committee’s purview.

In the fall, the committee will conduct open forums with the membership to be certain that any report to the Board from the committee reflects a broad cross section of the congregation’s views.

The membership’s involvement is critical to the success of the committee’s work. Please feel free to tell us what’s on your mind when you consider the Temple’s future. The best way to communicate with us is through the Temple’s email address - [email protected].

The committee includes: Leah Barker, Murray Blueglass, Allan Goldfarb & Sandy Packard.

Here’s to the future! Dave Brenner, Chair

MEMBERSHIPTemple Beth Israel’s introductory members were welcomed to a casual supper at the home of Kathy and Garry Brooks on Wednesday, March 25th. Close to 50 people attended. Our Men’s and Women’s Club Presidents gave a brief presentation along with Maye Lavinson speaking about WOO. We are delighted to have these members joining us as regular members for the 2015-16 year. We now have 512 individual members including 5 new members who have joined since the event. They are Dan and Honey Casden, Bernard and Caryl Sussman, and Beth Ann Segal.

● ADMINISTRATION REPORT

Since January of 2015, many positive changes have been taking place in the operation and appearance of our Temple office and to other areas of the Temple in which this administration has a responsibility to its congregants.

We have been able to update our computer system to insure more accurate entries and retrieval of pertinent Temple information. Our Temple has many talented professionals, such as Garry Brooks, who volunteered to reorganize our computer system and did such a wonderful job for us.

We were able to improve the overall appearance of the Temple office through the efforts of our BIW group’s generosity. We did extensive repairs and improvements to the sliding partitions in the Social Hall and the one between the Social Hall and the Sanctuary. These alterations will allow us to continue using both partitions instead of replacing the one in the Social Hall which had been out of use because of structural problems.

We recently concluded an extensive number of plumbing and electrical upgrades for the betterment of our Temple. Many safety factors were taken into consideration during these renovations.

Our phone lines were improved as well as our fire and security connections to our providers. Additionally, we instituted a special security alarm system for our office staff, maintenance staff, and for our Rabbi to use in case of an emergency. Our congregation while in the Sanctuary is protected by this system. This system works silently and effectively by going directly to the Longboat Key Police Department. We have run tests for our office staff to improve their reaction time in case there is ever a need to use this system.

We have removed all broken or overhanging branches encroaching over the parking lots and we have improved the exterior lighting over the entrance to the Temple.

The entire irrigation system for our beautiful grounds has been upgraded to ensure we have adequate pressure to feed the water to all of the spigots on our grounds.

Lisa has been hired to be our Temple Beth Israel operational coordinator. She works with Jen and besides supervising, sets up our work priorities and oversees the accuracy of all correspondence. She coordinates the scheduling and publicity, and also works closely with our Rabbi and the officers of our Temple.

● ADMINISTRATION REPORT CONT.

The Temple had invested in an AED (defibrillator) and has maintained it, but we were lacking sufficient qualified individuals to use this piece of lifesaving equipment. We recently offered a program to become certified by the Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department, and we had four members and one staff member sign up for this lifesaving course. The five who participated in this course all passed their test and received their certification cards. Not only did they learn how to perform CPR and help someone who is choking, but learned how to safely use an AED (defibrillator). Using CPR in conjunction with an AED for someone who can’t breathe can be the difference between life and death until the rescue squad arrives to take over this situation.

We have been very fortunate in obtaining the services of both Jen and Lisa, who are currently in charge of the operations of our Administrative Office. These two young ladies are personable, intelligent, and enjoy working with our congregants. We have seen the results of our fine staff through their many weekly duties involving our programs, Eblast, and our newly revised Weekly News Update.

Our office has just finished installing new high speed Konica/Minolta & HP copiers. We obtained our new office equipment at no extra cost to us, along with a lower price for black and white and color copies. We were able to transfer one of our older copiers to the Choir Department for their use. We are now capable of doing high quality printing at higher speeds with enhanced graphics and color resolution.

Our in-house production of our TBI Bulletin has been a success since its first copy. The Temple has received excellent comments on the quality of the new format and articles that have been appearing on a regular basis. Starting with our September bulletin, our congregants will be able to place small and large size acknowledgements or personal ads in each issue of the Bulletin.

Also, you will be able to obtain ads from your service providers to place in the Bulletin, Directory or both.

The Administrative Department has continued to improve the services provided to our congregants. We have helped to create good will in our community by hosting the Veteran’s Service at our Temple. LBK City Government held an important meeting at our Temple. We also assist the All Faiths Food Bank, Salvation Army, Disabled Veterans Hospitals in Florida, and many other civic and religious groups. TBI has and will always be there to help others, whether or not they are part of our congregation. In life we should always treat others like we want to be treated. It’s a mitzvah to help others less fortunate than us.Allan Goldfarb, VP Administration

SOMETHING NEW HAS ARRIVED

TBI members will now be able to place their personal acknowledgements in our Bulletin, Directory, or both. This added convenience will allow many at our Temple to have the opportunity to express their wishes in a more detailed manner, an opportunity which wasn’t previously available.

The following are some suggestions for including your personal acknowledgements or business ads in the Bulletin, Directory, or both: thank others; offer greetings; acknowledge achievements of TBI members, relatives or friends; and congratulate others on their birthday, anniversary, graduation, Bar & Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, birth announcements and promotions.

Consider placing your own personal business ad or requesting one from some of your service providers, such as a restaurant, dry cleaner, florist, jeweller, doctor, dentist, lawyer, bakery, contractor, hearing aid provider, electrician, plumber, or others, who could benefit from an ad in our Bulletin, Directory, or both. Each ad helps to bring more revenue into our Temple, which in turn, helps us fulfill our important mission.

There will be an ad fee based upon the size of the ad as follows:

BULLETIN /IssueEighth of a page---------- Quarter page-------------- Half page------------------ Whole page--------------

DIRECTORY Eighth of a page-------- Quarter page------------ Half page----------------- Whole page------------

We will begin this new program with our September Bulletin and our 2016 Directory. We will be instituting the following procedures, in order to make this undertaking a pleasant and helpful experience for our members and new advertisers.

Procedures to submit acknowledgements and ads for publication in the Bulletin, Directory, or both:

• Choose the size ad(s) desired to be inserted into the Bulletin, Directory, or both.

• Write down your message to be inserted in your acknowledgement or ads.

• Check out the cost of your ad(s) on the price schedule.

• Make out your check to Temple Beth Israel, include your message or messages, and indicate to us in which publications, (Bulletin, Directory, or both) they should be inserted.

• Mail or bring in the above requests along with your check.

• We are sorry, but we can’t accept your order over the phone. But, we will be glad to answer any questions that you may have in reference to these greetings and ads.

• If you obtain an ad from one of your service providers, please ask them to give you their photo ready art, if they have it available. If not we will provide the artwork for their business ad and yours too. Also, we need their information to place in the ad(s).

• All Bulletin acknowledgements and ads must be received by the 10th of each month to be inserted in the following month’s issue. In other words, you must submit all your information on August 10th to be placed in the September issue.

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

This last issue of the Temple Beth Israel Bulletin

for the 2014-2015 season has been dedicated

to looking back at all our many activities and

accomplishments as a Jewish temple community.

It has been a most heimish and successful year.

Our next issue will be published in September.

Anyone wishing to submit items or photos should

send them to [email protected] by August 10th.

Advertisements should be sent to the Temple office.

Calendar listings should be sent to jgandrg@yahoo.

com and RSVP coupon information to info-@tbi-

lbk.org. All are due by August 10th for publication

in the September issue.

The Bulletin Committee is deeply appreciative of

all the kind comments we have received this year

about the new Bulletin format. Much of the credit

goes to Falyn Ernst, who was hired to handle

the layout and printing responsibilities of the

publication. She has done a beautiful job with

new graphics and is a joy to work with. The rest

of the credit goes to the members of the Bulletin

Committee this year: Garry Brooks, Allan Goldfarb, Judy Goldstein, Vera Grodzinski, Paul Morgenstern, Joyce Paley, Gloria Sabin and Ruth Schumeister. Through careful editing they helped find and

correct errors. Thanks also go to the many people

who authored the Bulletin content each month

including Kathy Brooks, Rabbi Katz and each of the

organization or committee Chairpersons.

Personally, editing the Temple Bulletin has enabled

me to get to know my new Temple and Temple

members. On behalf of the Bulletin Committee

and myself, we thank you for your support and

your forbearance when we made an error! There is

always room for more committee members, so do

consider joining us next year. If interested, you may

contact me at [email protected].
