Hello there, Cobham, I do hope you are all well and that you have

avoided any flooding. It’s all been quite scary really, hasn’t it, listening to the news, seeing the unimaginable images of so many properties submerged in water, which is increasingly getting nearer and nearer to home. I’m hoping that the norm will apply here, in that historically, every time I mention the weather when writing this message, it’s very different by the time you read this! Let’s just hope the change is for the better, of course, or I will be in big trouble!

This month has once again flown by, but along the way, I’ve enjoyed a wonderful Lebanese meal and also tried out a 9 day cleansing programme. As well as all this, I visited the dentist, but not necessarily in that order!

On an entirely different note, we hear about a new book by local author, Janetta Harvey.Saving Susie-Belle tells the story of a heart- warming animal rescue but also highlights some outrageous practices in the world of animal breeding. Janetta’s story made it to the national press/media and I truly hope the publicity will go some way to changing these barbaric practices. Time for me to go now, but I do hope you enjoy this ‘Spring’ issue! Happy Mothers’ Day to all you mums out there!(That’s 30th March btw!)

Oh yes, & enjoy Pancake Day too!! (4th March!)

My name is Nick Lewis. I have been professionally cleaning carpets, upholstery and hard floors for over 25 years. As a sole trader, my aim is to give you a reliable, personal service, using the most advanced soil extraction machinery available. The machinery and chemicals used are industrial enough to leave any commercial or domestic job free of dirt, stains and harmful grit. This will extend the life of your carpets, upholstery and floors, which will also maintain hygiene in your home. Being in the cleaning industry for over 25 years, I have built up an extensive client base of domestic and commercial customers. My commercial clients include various letting agents, local councils and small organisations such as MENCAP. I pride my business on giving prompt appointments and providing enough time to complete a professional job. All my work is fully insured. Full satisfaction is my utmost priority.

We are very spoilt in the UK with such a vast selection of international culinary styles to choose from when dining out. We can virtually sample the world’s menus in any British town. One such international stop I would highly recommend is Meejana Lebanese restaurant in Weybridge. No passport is required on this mini-break, and if you enjoy fresh, healthy dishes with delicious flavours, your taste buds will certainly be in for a treat. Each dish is presented so beautifully: simple touches,

such as the contrast of colours between the wonderful aubergine dip and the blood red pomegranate sprinkled on top, made our meal a visual delight as well as a delicious dinner.

The restaurant itself is very pretty; there are two sections and walking in, it feels like you are entering a well-loved home. This venue would make a great choice for either a romantic meal for two or enjoying time with friends or family. There are many traditional touches: each table Is covered

Page 11: Look Local Magazine

with a beautiful Lebanese tablecloth, there are pretty lanterns and lovely things to look at, fresh flowers and even baskets of fruit, all ingredients which go to make a prefect recipe.

Our meal was delicious. We asked Edward, our host, to make selections for us. My guest was vegetarian and the variety of dishes for her was wonderful. As already mentioned, the aubergine dip was divine, the salad was an array of colours & flavours and the potato dish, with a mix of spinach and crispy onion strips, was a lovely combination. To that he added some haloummi and tomato-filled flat bread, some calamari with home-made tartar sauce and

some cheeky chicken livers. A wonderful feast indeed!

We finished our meal with pistachio ice cream and some little Lebanese pastries called baklava, both of which were totally delicious.

I have eaten in a number of Lebanese restaurants in a number of countries and Meejana is up there with the best. This is my favourite sort of food and I really enjoyed my visit. I will certainly be coming back and sharing this wonderful restaurant with my nearest and dearest.

Look Local strongly recommends Meejana Lebanese Restaurant. Our thanks go to Edward & Rita for a wonderful evening.

The competition began last year when they asked all their clients to nominate someone special whom they thought deserved to win a beautiful photo shoot. They received some very touching stories, and in January, their first winner was chosen.

Last week, they were thrilled to welcome Jennie and her 3 year old son Drew into their Cobham Studio for their very special winning photoshoot. Here is their story and some of the pictures from their shoot:

Back in November, Jennie’s friend Susie sent Mango Studios this email nomination:

I want to nominate my friend Jennie. She’s a single mum to her son Drew, aged 3. A year ago, Drew was diagnosed with retinoblastoma which is cancer of the eye. He had to have immediate surgery and have one eye removed. He has had chemotherapy and cryotherapy on the cancer in the other

eye but it still has a cancerous tumour in it and a floating tumour. The reality is that he might have to have his other eye removed. I can’t imagine the pain Jennie must feel as a mother; Drew has to have exploratory surgery on his eye every 3 weeks because it is the only way to know what is happening to the tumours. Jennie is very positive about the situation and I don’t know how she does it. I hope this story touches you, I know it breaks my heart and I wish there was more I could do.

I would love for them to win something like this because I can’t think of anyone in my life who deserves it more.

Becky and Liana said it was very humbling to meet Jennie and Drew. Drew was very well behaved and full of cheeky smiles. The bond between mother and son is so lovely to see in the photos. Having Drew’s grandparents

Mango Studios is a beautiful photography studio set in an idyllic location in Cobham. Since moving their business to Cobham in 2013, Becky and Liana, the talent behind the Mango

lenses, have been overwhelmed by the community spirit that Cobham has and they wanted to give something back to the local community.

That is why they have launched their “Share Your Story” competition that will continue to run throughout 2014. For details of the competition, see below.

Page 19: Look Local Magazine

present was extra special: Becky and Liana were able to capture the three generations laughing and having fun together. They hope that these photos will be treasured forever and looked back on with fond memories.

The future of Drew’s eye is uncertain at the moment and he will need lots more treatment. Jennie has set up a Just Giving page to raise support for his future treatment. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so by contacting Mango Studios who will pass on the details to you. The competition will continue to run this year, so if you would like to enter, here is how to do it:

Nominate yourself, or a loved one who really deserves a special treat by sending us an email to [email protected]

Tell us your story and why you think they deserve a photoshoot.

Every 3 months, we will choose someone to come into our studio for a complimentary photoshoot. The prize will include:• A one hour photoshoot in our beautiful

studio in Cobham• A viewing session to see all the photos

taken• A USB with 10 digital images of your choice

from the photoshoot• A 12” x 12” wall portrait

The photos of the shoot and the original story will then be published in the following months newsletter.

I was recently asked to review a Forever Living Clean 9 programme.

For the first two days, you have one special shake to drink a day, along with aloe vera, garcinia, bee pollen and lots of water. Day One was fine; I was surprised that I didn’t really feel that hungry. Day Two was a little harder for me but I got through it OK and decided that an early night was a good idea! Once I reached Day Three, I started to feel better and as if I was already starting to lose some weight, but I resisted the urge to stand on the scales! By now, it was also much more manageable because I was able to have two shakes during the day and a 600 calorie meal in the evening. I found myself really looking forward to my evening meal and not worrying so much about the fact that I wasn’t eating in the day. I soon realized how much I pick at food, more out of habit than necessity to be honest, and certainly when I didn’t really need to. In fact, if I did feel a little hungry, I simply drank more water which filled me up. But on the whole, the shakes did a pretty good job of getting me through the day. It is also recommended that you take 20 minutes of fairly gentle exercise, and walking the dogs sorted that out for me.

This 9-day programme is all about cleansing your body and getting it to work more efficiently. Endorsed by doctors and nutritionists, it focuses on losing only body fat.

It is a great way to break old habits and start afresh, whilst cleansing your body of unnatural chemicals. The easy-to-follow 9-day programme is designed to kick-start your weight loss, whilst putting you on the right path to take control of your overall health. • My weight loss was more than I expected; I

lost 6 lbs over the 9 days. • I feel more energetic.• My skin certainly looks better.• And it was actually easier to stick to than I

thought it would be.As part of the programme, you are

encouraged to measure various points of your body at the start and end of the cleanse. By doing this, I found that I had an overall total loss of 6 inches which I was delighted with.

I am snacking less and feel that I have made a very positive change to my eating habits. I have also felt more energized. Even now, when I am on a tight deadline for work, when I would normally be reaching for the biscuit tin, I don’t feel tempted to stray. I feel much less drawn to

sweet things in general, and with all the talk of sugar in the news, this has to be a very positive step forward!

In addition to the Clean 9 programme, I also tried the Forever Trim, Tone & Tighten Aloe Body Toning Kit.This was actually great fun and made my skin feel amazing. You start by cleansing your skin (in the shower or bath) and once dry, you are encouraged to do the measuring exercise at three points, your arms, upper legs and torso, and record your measurements. You then apply the Aloe Body Toner which is a warming and stimulating cream, and you can feel the warmth as you apply it. Now for the fun bit! You literally wrap your arms, torso below the bust and legs above the knees in cling film which you then leave in place for one hour. I watched TV whilst wrapped up not only in cling film, but in my dressing gown too! I could really feel the warming sensation of the body toner working under the layers of plastic. After one

hour, I gently cut away the wrap and rubbed any remaining cream into my skin. To gain maximum benefit, it is recommended that you should not wash for about 3 or 4 hours after the treatment. At this stage, you measure again and yes, all my measurements had reduced and my skin felt amazing.

I was advised to repeat this process at the start and end of the cleansing period which I did. This treatment works particularly well in conjunction with the Clean 9 programme, maximizing the effects as well as ensuring a little ‘me’ time, which is certainly a nice bonus too!

If you would like to give your body a real treat, start by calling Claire or Gilles for a chat. Their contact details can be found in the advert here and I am sure they will be delighted to hear from you and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you both very much for letting me try this amazing programme. I am feeling good!

Astek Dental Centre continues to advance and develop. Recent refurbishment brings with it a bright and cheerful waiting area and a selection of beautifully kitted-out treatment rooms. It really does offer a very nice environment for all aspects of dental care, ranging from their routine denture services to cosmetic dentistry, implants, veneers and even mouthguards for sportswear, to name but a few.

I was recently invited along to meet their newest member of staff, Diane Etherington, who is a qualified dental hygienist. Diane will be supporting the dental staff at Astek on a part-time basis and her 30 minute appointments are well worth including in your overall dental care. At £45 per visit, they are very good value for money, and if needed, dentures can be cleaned at the same time. As they say, prevention is certainly better than cure when it comes to teeth.

Astek has provided Diane with a newly decorated room to work from and I was invited to ‘take the chair’! As a new patient, Diane started by running through a few basic medical questions, and once the formalities were over, she looked at my teeth. I am pretty lucky and have been blessed with a fairly good set of gnashers, but I must confess to not being very regular with the dental floss. Diane said that my teeth looked in good condition and this is helped by the fact that I use an electric toothbrush. But to maintain good gum health, she advised that I should floss regularly.

My teeth are also prone to slight sensitivity with hot or cold temperatures, and as a result, I wondered if the cleaning process might be slightly uncomfortable but it really wasn’t. Diane gave my teeth a thorough clean and polish and a good flossing too! We discussed different types of toothpaste and floss products. She

was very gentle and talked me through each stage of my appointment, asking me to tell her if I was at all uncomfortable at any point. She is really lovely and made my visit very stress-free indeed. At the end, I was delighted to see how clean my teeth looked and felt.

I will definitely be back to visit Diane in the future - and I promise to floss every

night! Thank you very much, Astek Dental,

I actually enjoyed my visit and it’s not often you can say that where dentists are concerned!

For over six years, Susie-Belle had been trapped in a life of misery as someone’s commodity, a puppy farm breeding bitc. She was tied up in the back of a filthy agricultural shed, never seeing the outside world, receiving little or no care and experiencing neglect to a horrifying degree. When she was found, her body was so frail, thin and abused that it was thought she would not survive long. Her entire life had been about producing puppies to be sold to dealers, who in turn sold her babies to unwitting puppy buyers via online ads or in pet shops, or from the boot of a car. All these are outlets used by dealers in puppies from commercial breeding places. Puppies are an easy source of cash for the breeders and dealers and are seen as nothing more. The parent dogs like Susie-Belle are kept in cruel confinement for years until they are so worn out or sick that they can no longer produce the goods. Then, and only then, do they leave captivity, and not always into the safe arms of rescuers.

For Susie-Belle, peace came before death, as she is one of the lucky ones: that is, if we consider surviving years of loneliness, pain and terror as lucky. For she was rescued, lifted out of the dark and grubby hidden nightmare that is puppy farming and brought to safety. After spending six months in a loving foster home in Berkshire where she underwent essential veterinary care, including sight-saving cataract surgery, eventually, Susie-Belle arrived to live with Janetta and her husband Michel in Cobham.

Now she shares a peaceful home with her two schnauzer sisters and experiences nothing less than complete loving daily care.

Where once she was a scabby, nameless creature, she now has a beautiful name, and life these days is good, as good as it can possibly be. Never again will it be anything less for this gentle soul who has suffered at the hands of humans who value commercial profits more than life itself. At rescue, Susie-Belle was severely underweight; now she lives in a home where her diet gets more attention than many humans give their own – Michel is a chef and Janetta is an enthusiastic foodie and they share abundant culinary joy with Susie-Belle. Travelling regularly to France accompanied by Susie-Belle and her canine sisters, camping round the UK, meeting other dogs up and down the country, the book tells the story of Susie-Belle’s first year out of the dark and on the road to recovery.

Saving Susie-Belle is published by John Blake and is available in all good bookshops and as a Kindle edition. Following the tremendously successful book launch party hosted by the very dog-friendly Cobham Bookshop on 2nd February, signed copies are available there at 12 Anyards Road, Cobham.

To find out more about puppy farming and to keep up to date with Susie-Belle’s life, follow her on twitter @SusieBSchnauzer, her blog susiefoodie.blogspot.co.uk or find Susie-Belle Schnauzer on Facebook.

Saving Susie-BelleIn a newly released book, Saving Susie-Belle, Cobham author Janetta Harvey tells the

moving true story of how she gave a rescued miniature schnauzer a loving new home. Susie-Belle was saved from the horrific puppy farming industry and the book is not only a celebration of Susie-Belle’s survival and new life, but is also an investigation into the

terrible hidden world of breeding puppies for cash.

As the end of another tax yearapproaches, it is wise to consider any action that youcould take to minimise yourtaxes before the end of theyear. It is also useful to consider any action to plan fornext year.

• Income tax personal allowance - Everyone (even a child) has a personal tax allowance of £9,440 this year. Make sure you use it, and wherever possiblethat all members of the family use theirs.

• Capital gains tax annual exemption –Similarly, everyone has an annual exemptionfrom capital gains tax of £10,900 this year.Again, you should use this if possible.

• Basic rate band – The first £32,010 ofincome over the personal allowance is taxedat 20%, rising to 40% above that. It is worth-while if you can plan your income so that youalways use up this band.

• £100,000 tax trap – The part of income from £100,000 to £118,880 is effectively taxed at 60% - the highestrate of all – due to the withdrawal ofpersonal allowances. Staying below thislevel by advancing or deferring income

can make a substantial difference to youroverall tax rate.

• Age allowance tax trap – For thoseover 65 at the start of a tax year there areextra personal allowances. These are withdrawn for incomes over £26,100 giving an effective tax rate of 30% on a slice of income.

• Dividends - If you have a limited company, consider whether to pay a dividend before or after 5th April.

• Tax breaks – Consider whether youshould take advantage of the tax-privilegedinvestments this year. These include:

• Pension contributions – full tax relief available for qualifying payments.

• ISAs – reduced income tax and capital gains tax on investments in an ISA.

• SEIS – 50% tax relief for investments.

• EIS – 30% tax relief for investments.

Discover the private world of society hostess This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mrs Greville, who

owned Polesden Lacey and left it to the National Trust in her will. From 1 March, a new display at her former home will reveal the interior design secrets of her private apartment, along with some surprisingly homely artefacts.

The apartment’s Edwardian interiors, including a rare surviving marble bathroom, are the work of Ritz hotel architects Mewès and Davis. Thanks to a 2-year research project, the unfurnished rooms can be seen, along with personal items that have been tracked down.

Digital graphics and an interactive display show how the apartment used to look, based on inventories and photographs in the archive.

The house and apartment at Polesden Lacey will be open seven days a week from 1 March, 12.30 – 5pm weekdays, 11am – 5pm weekends.

A new book by Sian Evans called Mrs Greville: The society hostess who collected kings is available from the gift shop at Polesden Lacey.

I’m fascinated by words, and as Latin was part of my degree, I love the botanical names of plants. For years, people referred to plants simply by their common names: only the eggheads and botanists used botanical terms.

But as plant choices have proliferated and people have become more knowledgeable, the use of botanical names has developed. Hostas are rarely now plantain lilies; coral bells are heuchera and false spirea is astilbe.

Classification of plants is called taxonomy and involves a hierarchy of categories, ranging from very large groupings to very small ones. From the top, here are the main terms used:

A genus is a group of plants with common characteristics and can contain some or many species. A species is a class of plants with some common characteristics. A variety is an individual or group in the species that can breed from seed but is a natural variation of the species. A cultivar is a man-made plant variety, produced by selective breeding and usually reproduced through cuttings/root division. ‘Cultivar’ and ‘variety’ are often used interchangeably, but they differ in their reproduction. A hybrid is a plant produced by impregnating one species with the pollen of another. Hybrids can occur naturally, but are created increasingly by breeders to improve

size/colour/disease-resistance.In understanding plant names, we refer

generally only to genus and species, and sometimes to the sub-classifications of hybrid, variety and cultivar. So, in everyday use, the plant is referred to by a Latin name, consisting of the genus + species. The generic name is a noun, followed by the species, which is an adjective/descriptive name. This usually describes colour, foliage shape, size, habit, number of parts, place of origin or the name of the person who found the plant, and usually in Latin/Greek. So, Quercus rubra is red oak, ‘quercus’ meaning oak and ‘rubra’ meaning red. Often, the descriptive word gives a lot more precision, since many common names refer to several different plants (‘bluebell’ can refer to Hyacinthoides non-scripta (‘undescribed’) in England, Campanula rotundifolia (‘round-leaved’) in Scotland and Sollya heterophylla (‘different leaves’) in Australia.

The genus always has an initial capital and is italicised or underlined, and the species begins with a lower case letter, so Quercus rubra is correct, but quercus rubra and Quercus Rubra aren’t. If a subspecies exists, the name is written Helleborus niger subsp. Macranthus. Cultivars and varieties are capitalised and enclosed in single quotation marks, not italics: eg Ipheion uniflora ‘Wisley Blue’. Hybrids have an x in front of the generic name (although this is sometimes missed out): eg x Heucherella ‘Kimono’.

I’ll try to compile a list of common adjectives used in botanical names for a future article. I may be gone some time…..

HAYFEVER... Around one in four of us knows the misery that

comes with hayfever every year. It is simply an allergy to pollen, but in extreme cases can mean time off work or school.

Different pollens can cause hayfever at different times of the year, but the most common hayfever -inducing pollens come from grass and are usually at their peak in June and July.

A diagnosis of hayfever is usually made simply by looking at symptoms, especially in an otherwise healthy individual. We are all familiar with the symptoms of hayfever - the blocked or runny nose, the sneezing and the itchy eyes/throat/mouth.

However, symptoms can vary from day to day, depending on the pollen count. We can expect a high pollen count when it is hot and dry and a lower count when it is cooler and wetter.

The mainstay of treatment for hayfever is a non-sedating antihistamine. This effectively dampens down the body‘s reaction to the pollen and may be taken as needed throughout the season. It can be bought from your pharmacist without a prescription and without a trip to the GP.

If however symptoms are not controlled in this way, it is best to seek further advice. Other treatments include eye drops and an intranasal (up the nose!) steroid spray. Ideally, this spray should be started two weeks before the hayfever season starts.

Other tips for managing hayfever include putting Vaseline just inside the nostrils which helps to ‘catch’pollens, shutting windows to keep pollens outside and staying in doors - admittedly not always practical!
