Introducing Longridge Wine Estate
Longridge Wine Estate, one of the leading wine estates in South Africa, is
situated in the Stellenbosch region on the cool slopes of the Helderberg
mountain range. The farm was first registered in 1841 and underwent a few
name changes before finally being called Longridge since 1992.
Vision
Our winemaking philosophy is simple - we want to make enjoyable wines, which
are healthy to drink and of a world class standard.
Mission
Our mission is to produce world class wines in a natural way, applying the age-old
traditions of “natural winemaking’’ and respecting our land, by not using any
herbicides, pesticides or chemical sprays.
For this we need only grapes and time. In other words, we do not want to make
all the various additions modern winemakers use to produce wines quicker
and cheaper. Accordingly we use less sulphur dioxide and no commercial
yeast, enzymes, fining agents, stabilizing agents, filtration etc.
Vineyards
The farm is 50 hectares in size with half of that currently planted with vines. The slopes are mostly west facing and about 5km from the sea.
Our relatively moderate Maritime climate contributes towards the even
ripening of the grapes, with cooling breezes pushing in from nearby False Bay
during the afternoons and cool air rolling down the mountain at night. This
makes it generally a few degrees cooler than the rest of Stellenbosch, important in a warm climate like Africa.
Vineyards
Average annual rainfall is approximately 800mm and the clay sub-soil has good
water-holding capacity, however we can irrigate in dry years to preserve quality.
Our soils are essentially decomposed granite over iron rich clay, which are
ideal for the varieties we grow. We are focussed on improving the mineral
make-up and organic matter in our soils and employ bio-dynamic practices to
great effect to accomplish this.
Environment
At Longridge 'People and Planet' are of paramount importance. We work from the belief that respecting nature and caring for the people
involved, will enable them to develop. This also reflects in the quality of the wines.
We have taken an organic approach to farming incorporating biodynamic practices to constantly improve our soil health.
The water that is used in the cellar is treated with an organic filtering
system then re-used to irrigate all of the vineyards and fruit trees on the
Property and further collect all rainwater to maximise water conservation.
We constantly strive to reduce energy consumption through efficient
planning, minimal use of machinery and utilising solar and LED products.
Environment
We are managing vegetation through sustainable organic viticulture and agriculture practices, striving to encourage the natural balance of our
ecosystem
We are not using pesticides or herbicides
The indigenous flora is encouraged as a cover crop between the vine rows. There is a small area of land devoted to indigenous flora and we are increasing this in
size
Waste matter produced from the vineyards and the wine production activities are returned to the land by making our own compost.
A recycling program for production waste materials such as glass, plastics,
cardbord & other materials is in place
Our packaging materials are all recyclable post consumption
Community Involvement
We at Longridge support MKI (Medical Knowledge Institute); an international
non-profit health organisation
established in the Netherlands and dedicated
to "prevention through education". MKI
strongly believes that healthcare is a human
right and has, therefore, developed several
educational programs which are executed in
developing countries. The objective
is to improve the living conditions of the
population by giving health related
trainings and workshops to local aid workers
and the local people.
MKI is Longridge Wine Estate and Restaurant’s main charity
Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu,
Patron of MKI and friend of Longridge

Our Wines
We focus on the varieties that are best suited to our climate and soils.
Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc (Steen) have both proven themselves over the
years and have been highly awarded. Likewise, the classic red varieties of Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon and of course Pinotage.
Methodé Cap Classique
A lingering and vibrant
mousse brings to the surface
flavours and aromas of lime
leaf, brioche, and roasted
almonds, with hints
caramelized green apple,
citrus and ripe strawberry.
The elegant mouth feel ends
off with a fine and fresh
minerality. 82% Chardonnay – 18 % Pinot Noit
Chenin Blanc
From our single vineyard
Chenin Blanc – over 30 years old.
The nose arrests fresh scents
of citrus peel, grenadilla pulp
and jasmine flowers. Fresh
flavours of melon, pineapple
and lime are accompanied
with smooth hints of almonds
and brioche and finishes with a
light crisp minerality.
Chardonnay
Longridge is synonymous with
top quality Chardonnay.
This wine with its light straw
colour, bursts with vibrant
scents of lime, grapefruit,
honeycomb and almond brittle.
Natural fermentation in French
oak barrels gave the wine a full
mid-palate, exotic flavours and a
pleasant crisp finish. Can age for
another 6-8 years.
Merlot
Specially selected and sorted grapes, controlled natural
fermentation and calm muturation in French oak
barrels.
Out of the deep garnet colour comes the
aromas of black plum, red cherry and dark chocolate. The palate is balanced with
silky tannins and undertones of cured ham.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Rich, deep and dark red in
colour. This wine shows its
intensity through aromas
of black cherries, ripe
mulberries and follows
through on the palate with
hints of dark chocolate.
Together with subtle and fine
grained tannins, this wine
leaves one well satisfied.
Pinotage
Pinotage is Africa’s only
indigenous red wine cultivar
and stylistically we focus on
the fruit and the grape’s
unique characteristics.
Elegant, yet full-bodied in style,
this wine burst with flavours
of stewed fruit and spices
and finishes with a hint of
dark chocolate.
