This month it’s the awesome world of multiple exposures. Multiple exposures are one of our favourite and unpredictable techniques and I just can’t get enough, I’m always amazed with the fantastic results, so enjoy!
who are we?
we are two sisters from Buckinghamshire who have a passion for Lomography and vintage cameras. We both got our first cameras back in December 2010 and since then our collection has grown to over 40 between us.
we love slide film and experimenting with different techniques, and we love being
constantly surprised with the results that you just don’t get with digital photography.we are always inspired by the analogue community, and want to share this wonderful world with everyone.

a guide to techniquesthroughout the book we may highlight techniques of how the image was createdhere’s a rough guide to the terms
rats eye: this is where the camera is placed at ground level, it gives a great perspective and depth.
double exposure: one shot taken over the top of another usually using an mx button or finishing a roll, rewinding, then shooting on top.
home made redscale: take some colour film and put it in your camera the wrong way round, so you expose on the back of the film.
long exposure: using the bulb mode “B” you can create motion blurs.
cross-processing: xpro for short. processing your film in the wrong chemicals gives your film more impact and saturated high contrast.
sprocket hole: modifying a medium format camera to use 35mm film, means you will have the image bleeding onto the sprocket holes.
coloured flash: get some coloured plastic gels, place one over the flash and experiment with colour.
panoramas: combining multiple shots of one subject to create one long overlapping image.
camera tossing: moving your camera or throw it in the air as you take the shot. giving a camera shake and motion blur.
microclicks: Overlapping, merging many exposures together so that they create a much more striking, fluid and cohesive panorama.

How long have you been into lomography / photography: I got into photography at college in the 90s, shooting Pentax K1000s, developing and printing B&W. My interest fell away in my twenties until flickr rekindled it in 2007.
What cameras do you own:Lots! 3 SLRs, 2 LCAs, a bunch of multiple lens cameras, a couple of half frames, an XA2 and an XA3, a lovely Yashica TLR (charity shop bargain!), a Holga and Diana, and a whole bunch of Vivitar ultra Wide and Slims. All bought on the cheap from eBay, charity shops or donated to me. Oh, and a half share in a Lomo LC-Wide with my brother, too expensive to buy outright!
Favourite film:At the moment I’m liking Kodak Elitechrome 100 (or the Lomography Chrome 100, which
is the same thing).

favourite shooting locations:I really enjoy revisiting the same location at different times with different cameras and films. My “Spooky Tree” series ended up as 100 images of the same dead tree taken over a few years with a bunch of different cameras. I’ve since moved on to the Pitstone Windmill as a recurring theme, and near work there’s a neon sign and a poster of the surfer Kelly Slater that I keep returning to.
As a one-off I really enjoyed shooting at the Red Sands sea forts (accessed via boat trips from Herne Bay or Whitstable). Well worth a day trip.
Favourite Camera / Film / Accessory Combination:I’ve got a few: Kodak E100g in my Holga, redscale in an XA2 and Kodak Elitechrome in my LCAs
a bit about yourself:I’m often asked why I shoot film... the answer for me is not really about film itself, it’s film cameras I really like. I enjoy shooting with them, collecting them, buying and selling them, lending and borrowing them and hacking and modifying them.
I live in small town Hertfordshire, work in soho in London, which gives me plenty of different locations to shoot....just wish it was a bit nearer the sea.

where would you like to shoot where you haven’t so far?I’d love to go back to Lake Como - a few years ago we borrowed an amazing apartment right on the lake... just at the point I’d fallen out of love with photography. I wince when I think of all the shots I could have taken...
And somewhere I haven’t been... I’d love to go out and shoot an Oil Rig....how do you organise that I wonder?

playing with fireworkswith the help of Daz. (flickr) here’s a guide to creating these seasonally appropriate double exposures!
what you will need: You will need a camera with some sort of long-exposure/bulb mode, a tripod (optional), and a firework display.
step 1: Go to the firework display and attach your camera to your tripod. You don’t need a tripod, but it does ensure your photos of the fireworks actually look like fireworks!
step 2: Wait for the fireworks to begin and start taking photos of them.
If you are using a camera (such as the Lomo LC-A+) then set your ISO to match the film speed. When taking photos, remember to hold the shutter button down for the full exposure. You can get longer/shorter exposures by setting your ISO to lower/higher than that of the film’s speed.
If you are using a basic camera with bulb mode (such as the Diana or Holga) then hold the shutter open for about 5 seconds. Of course, this is an approximate time. Hold the shutter open for more time if you want more firework trails in the photo; and less time if you want less firework trails.

step 3: Rewind the film. Be careful not to wind it all in, otherwise you’ll need a film-retrieval tool (or your local lab) to get the end out again.
step 4: Reload your camera with the film and shoot again! Daylight landscapes/cityscapes look great with fireworks in the sky, but you can shoot anything you want...
conclusion: This technique works so well because the explosions of the fireworks are surrounded by a dark night sky. This darkness doesn’t get picked up on the second exposure; so when shot over, it creates photos with fantastic little explosions of colours!
