By Daniel Scheffler, Page 1: Locavore Watches Although "locavore" has been the confederate of the food movement (read: farm to table), the word has now started to get commingled with all other industries. From Apple and GM returning their manufacturing and production closer to home, to small "mom and sister" produce and fashion businesses thriving in their local communities, "locavore" may have an idealistic tenor but is gaining traction worldwide. Finding locally produced watches, and selling them not too far from their market, was, of course, the natural evolution and apparently not too hard to accomplish, either. Some argue that the locavore movement is just a rebellion against globalization and the fear of not knowing what goes into any kind of production or manufacturing. But the manifested truth is that it was spawned from an interest in sustainability and ecoconsciousness. The watch industry's version of locavore means a revival of nonSwiss (mostly locally made) watches from Germany, Italy, the UK and, naturally, the U.S. Of course, these watches appeal to watch lovers, collectors and fanatics who are less interested in ageold Swiss heritage and absolute Swiss (or Geneva) precision but want to belong to a subset of cool. And so we find some of the "cult" watches produced on local American ground a kind of Americana if you will. Shinola Runwell 47 mm Price: $550

What started in 2009 as a Kickstarter crowdfunding exercise has turned into a serious venture to create a truly American watch: the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape(S.E.R.E) one piece. Based out of Hagerstown, Maryland, the watch comes with the Hager (HGR) 48 movement in a stainlesssteel beadblasted case. The S.E.R.E is Hager’sinterpretation of the watch issued to Special Forces during Vietnam and, in all seriousness, looks the part.
