    PICTURE OF THE MONTH

See an amazing wildlife spectacle from the comfortof a warm observatory this winter at The Wildfowl &Wetlands Trust, Slimbridge. From 2 November to theend of the February you can see thousands of wildbirds being fed on the Rushy Lake.

The warden starts his commentary with you inside thePeng Observatory before heading outdoors with a largebarrow full of feed. Many of the birds you will see havetravelled from the Arctic Tundra to reach their wintering

grounds at WWT Slimbridge. Some of the rarer visitorsinclude the beautiful and much-loved Bewicks swanswhich return each year after spending the summer inArctic Russia.

The swans come to spend a few months feeding inour relatively mild climate ahead of their ight back forthe breeding season in spring.Adult Bewicks swans are white all over, while the

young birds are grey with a pinkish bill. They develop

an individual bill pattern when they are around one yearold which allows WWT researchers to identify them. Billpatterns are recorded so that scientists can follow eachswans progress over its lifetime. In a tradition datingback to 1965, every swan is also given a unique name

The event starts at 4pm each day and is included inthe normal admission costs. Its worth arriving slightlyearly to get a good seat and watch the birds land on thelake ahead of the feed.

While many of us are already planningour menus for the festive season, withplump turkeys, mince pies, mulled wine andChristmas puddings aplenty, the number ofpeople using the Stroud District Foodbankcontinues to rise. The food collection centresin Stonehouse, Dursley, Stroud and Wottonunder Edge are busier than ever, with an88% increase in referrals in the last sixmonths alone.

The Stroud District Foodbank is one ofover 200 foodbanks providing emergencyfood to people in crisis across the UK,and since April 2013, there has been ateam working in Stonehouse with a foodcollection centre open two mornings a week.Frontline care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB andthe police identify people in crisis and issuethem with a Foodbank voucher, which canbe redeemed for emergency food at a centrelike the one in Stonehouse.

Schools, churches, businesses andindividuals donate non-perishable food

to the Foodbank, then volunteers sort thegoods to check that they are in date and foodis packed into boxes ready to be given topeople in need. Foodbank clients then bringtheir voucher to a foodbank centre whereit can be redeemed for three days worth ofemergency food.

Volunteers meet clients over a cup oftea or a free hot meal and they are able tosignpost them to agencies able to help solvethe longer-term problem.

This year, the children of HopelandsPreparatory School in Regent Street,Stonehouse will be donating their Harvestproduce to the local foodbank, followingtheir Harvest Festival service at St CyrsChurch at the end of October.

If you or any organisation you are involvedwith would like to help by donating food, please get in touch with Will Mansell at theStroud District Foodbank at:[email protected]

All donations of food will gratefullyreceived, and will make a huge differenceto people in need who are living right onour doorstep.

    SPORT FIXTURES Support yourlocal sports

    teams!

There seems to be an almost compulsion for peopleto have to support one of the major premier leaguefootball clubs these days. All we hear on TV andradio is about the Manchester Uniteds, Chelseas andLiverpools of this world and a visitor to our shoresmight think that there was only one league to support. How wrong would they be? Behind all the glamour, glitz and money of the premier league there is a wealthof talent and dedication from players, directors andsupporters of teams at all levels.

In our area we are lucky not only to have thrivingtown and village clubs, such as Stonehouse Town FC,but we have two football league clubs and a high yingConference league side all within easy reach. These local clubs deserve our support. As a long-termSwindon Town fan, I have seen the rise and fall fromthe dizzy heights of that memorable League cup winagainst the mighty Arsenal in 1969 (I was there), to thedepths of administration and two spells in the bottomleague. There have been good times and bad for allof our clubs but many of us keep going, week afterweek. Yes we often can be heard moaning about aperformance but we still go back next week.

Our local amateur clubs exist due mainly to thesupport and hard work of just a few people who oftendedicate their lives to making the club work.I think they all deserve our support, so I would liketo make a plea to all TV football fans. Sometimewithin the next few weeks go and watch a local game.Experience the real excitement of seeing live sport.

I guarantee that you will nd yourself becominginvolved. And above all I am sure you will besurprised and delighted by the standard of football youare watching.

Check out the xtures on this page and pick a gameto go and see. Support Forest Green, give Swindon acheer, Make Cheltenham your team or take the kids towatch Stonehouse. You wont regret it!
