The following article written by our Judy Seiff was recently published inthe Fall newsletter of the Board of Jewish EducatIr of Greater Washington. We believe our members should be informed alout the quality nursery spon-

•sored by us Our nursery school has a present enrollment of 150 childrenand a staff of 23. It is one of the largest in the whole metropolitan area andthe biggest Jewish sponsored enrollment for Northern Virginia.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT57ü97eiffDlrector

Rodef Shalom Nursery SchoolFalls Church, Virginia

Our pre-school has been in existence for II years. As with other programsdesigned for young children, our primary goal was and is to provide the beatpossible environment for children to grow and develop physically, emotion-ally, socially and intellectually in a Jewish atmosphere, in addition to meet-ing the needs of the many youngsters who have attended the school, over thepast years, there have been important "fringe enets" for our Temple andfor our secular community which have come with hing a nursery school Inthe synagogue.

• Young families often do not become involved in synagogue life until theirchildren are ready for formal Jewish education. The existence of a Jewishpre-school brings those families closer to the community years sooner thanthey might otherwise have come. Involvement In Simchat Torah and Purimfestivities and attendance at Family Shabbat services is often an outgrowthof attendance in nursery school. Young mothers have become part of sis-terhood which meets during school hours and have utilized the Judaica Shopto bring items of Jewish interest and beauty in their homes. A high percen-tage of Jewish population in our program affiliates with the synagogue in amost natural manner as time passes.

Our program is unique in that many of our students are not Jewish. Thereasons for their enrollment in our school are varied, but happily mostcome because they feel that it is a good place for their children. This hasprovided a marvelous opportunity for many who would never have knownanything about the Jewish community to learn to appreciate the TempleThey have become comfortable and proud of the existence of this synagoguein their midst. In learning about Jewish customs and traditions, throughtheir children, we feel that basic human relations have been improved.

Perhaps the best example of the good feelings engendered by the attendanceof children from the entire community is exemplified by a comment made

•by a Jewish youngster who attended our program and then moved on to a localelementary school. "There aren't many Jewish kids in my class now, but that's0. K. because the other kids really understand. They went to our nurseryschool."

When we attempt to justify the existence of pre-school programs in our fa-cilities, taking rising costs, the hassle of sharing equipment and facilities, the need for better salaries, etc. into account, we must never overlook thesynagogue. We, as early childhood educators, are actually accomplishingmuch more than our intended goal.

DAY CARE CENTER/

The Falls Church-McLean Day Care Center is a non-profit Day Care Centerjust down the street from the Temple in the basement of the ChesterbrookPresbyterian Church. Since its beginnings 12 years ago, the Temple hasbeen a staunch supporter of the Center with contributions, representativeson the Board, Volunteer help and donations of snacks by Sisterhood,The Center serves 58 children in the Center-most from low income familieswho must receive County subsidies and community donations to add to theirparent fees, and 17 infant and toddlers in home-care satellites. Besides theobvious necessity for money, the Center welcomes gifts of outgrown (butstill good) tricycles, record players, books, puzzles, etc. We also needpeople in a variety of roles; I) volunteer drivers (to drive children once aweek for speech therapy; 2) classroom volunteers; 3) an attorney who wouldbe willing to sit on the Board and help the Center with occasiont legal problems;4) a Temple representative to the Board of the Center (meets 3rd Monday eve-ening every month). Please call me about any of the above.

Jan Safersteiti, 3568614

In appreciation:

The Temple would like to thank Officers Reistad Pa Jeorgç and Stull of theeMcLean District Station for their work during tigFi51y Days. In their

PTA NEWS

The PTA Book Fair will be held on November. 3rd and November 7th. Child-ren and parents will be able to first view the books on October 31st. Mostbooks selected for the Fair are either by Jewish authors or pertain to Jewishsubjects. Books may also be special ordered. Last year, the profits fromthe Book Fair were used to purchase new books for the Temple Library. TheBook Fair allows one the opportunity to buy birthday and/or Hanukkah giftsearly. Another excellent idea is to purchase books to donate to the TempleLibrary in honor of your child's birthday.

If parents have not already done so, please don't forget to pay for yourchild's religious school and Hebrew school textbooks. Please send the moneyto the Temple in care of Dick Friedman.

Many thanks to Dr. Jonathan Siegel of the Board of Jewish Education for hisvery interesting and entertaining discussion on helping your child cope withhis/her Jewish identity during the Christmas holidays. The confirmationclass also attended and contributed to the lively discussion.

Thanks to Barbara Kermisch, Elaine Shaw, Elaine Elinsky and Marian SJackson for helping to serve following the recent consecration and SirnchatTorah service.
