Should stores stop selling products that contain plastic microbeads?

Yes! They are terrible for the environment.

Why bother? Products will still be sold at other businesses.

Maybe. We should also update our wastewater treatment plants.

No. The 2017 ban on microbead manufacturing will take care of it.

Carve Out Whitespace

Whitespace is time you dedicate to yourself to refresh, unplug and

rejuvenate. This could be making time to do yoga, enjoy a hobby, read,

meditate or take a bath.

Simple Ways to Manage Pain

To help reduce and prevent pain, try these easy tips to keep you doing the

things you love while helping minimize pain and keeping that spring in your

step this winter:

Sit Tall: If you have a desk job, proper posture can help to reduce back pain

as you age. Sit with your back straight with your shoulders back; distribute

your body weight evenly on both hips, bend your knees at right angles and

keep your feet flat on the floor.

Be Flexible: Whether it’s weekly yoga, or standing up and stretching

between long periods of sitting, flexibility can help you stay fit and strong.

One simple stretch: stand with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands

on your lower back with finger tips pointing down, slowly lean back as far

as comfortable while looking up at the ceiling, then return to start. Repeat

five times.

Eat Smart: Reduce the risk of inflammation by incorporating anti-

inflammatory foods such as tomatoes, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, fruits and

vegetables into your diet as much as possible.

Keep hands and feet healthy during cold

weather Step one: Moisturize to prevent infection - Look for a lotion that

contains water, glycerin and

allantoin. Glycerin helps pull

moisture in, while allantoin helps

break down the rough barrier

allowing the water to seep into

skin. These ingredients help skin

to heal itself.

Step two: Protection from the

elements - Start w ith a good pair

of boots that keep feet

comfortably warm. Be sure the

boots are waterproof to resist rain

and snow. A good sole with a

thick tread helps to grip slick

surfaces. For hands, always wear

gloves or mittens when outside,

even for brief periods.

Step three: Understand frost bite - Frost bite symptoms include

numbness, pins and needles

sensations, hard, pale skin when

cold and red, painful or blistered

skin after it’s warmed. Frost bite

can affect any part of the body,

but the hands and feet are

particularly vulnerable. If frost

bite is suspected, never put hands

or feet in hot water, always use

warm water to gradually warm

skin. If numbness or pain

continues, call a doctor

immediately for treatment.

OMS & ANESTHESIA Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS’s) are trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration. Fol lowing completing dental school, an OMS completes at least 4-6 years of advanced training in a hospital-based surgical reside ncy program alongside medical residents in general, plastic and head and neck surgery, along with anesthesiology residents . They have extensive training in anesthesiology over their 4-6 years where they serve on the anesthesiology service and l earn to evaluate patients for all types of anesthesia, deliver the anesthetic and monitor post-anesthetic patients. They also have extensive training in all forms of anesthetic emergencies.

The ability for an OMS to provide patients with safe and effective outpatient anesthesia distinguish es them as the only extensively formally trained dental specialists to provide anesthetics in a dental office setting. I n fact, OMS’s typically have operating rooms (OR’s) specifically designed and state certified for the delivery of safe anesthetic s. As licensed general anesthesia caregivers, OMS’s are able to provide patients with all forms and levels of anesthesia, w hich further distinguishes them from other dental specialists. These include anything from local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxyg en (or laughing gas), IV and general anesthesia. Every OMS is well prepared to identify, diagnose and assess the source of pa in and anxiety and appropriately administer anesthesia. They have extensive experience in airway management, endotrache al intubation, establishing and maintaining intravenous lines and managing complications and emergencies that may a rise during the administration of anesthesia.

An OMS’s team is always willing to discuss your anesthetic needs with you at any time, as we want all patients to have as pleasant and safe experience as possible during their surgery. If you would like to discuss your surgical or anesthetic needs, please call 585-346-6560.

SENSITIVE SUBJECT

Tooth sensitivity can be triggered by hot or cold foods and

liquids or merely by breathing in cold air. The sudden, sharp

pain associated with these activities is due to the involvement

of nerve endings in one or more teeth. Sometimes, receding

gums expose the soft “dentin” layer, which is below the

enamel and encapsulates the tooth nerve. Dentin, which

makes up the tooth root(s) and also accounts for the bulk of

the tooth, contains tiny channels that lead to the tooth nerve

center (pulp). Once the dentin comes in contact with hot or

cold foods and liquids, it triggers sensation in the nerve. Other

causes of tooth sensitivity include cracked or chipped teeth,

decay, and acidic foods and juices.

We will make suggestions to help you maintain good oral

health and fend off tooth sensitivity. With proper home care

and professional supervision, there is no reason why a person

can’t enjoy the comforts of good dental health well into later

life. Schedule your appointment today! Let us help you smile.

P.S. Teeth are most sensitive between the ages of 25 and 30.

AVOID FLU, STICK TO W INTER-W ELLNESS ROUTINE

M ost of us can’t survive the w inter w ithout falling prey to at least one virus, infec tion or zealous set of cold germs. The phrase “ w inter w ellness” sometimes seems like an oxymoron.

After all, staying indoors in a c losed air system makes people more susceptible to certain germs. W inter’s affec tion for cold, dry air means germs w ill stay airborne longer. Just like adding layers of hats and scarves, w e must add layers of immune support to bolster our defenses.

For many families, the f lu vacc ine is a viable option, but don’t take any chances. Fort ify your body’s immune system by making smart dietary choices, too.

ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to.

Getting a little high-intensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years.

After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This is what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? -- H.T.

ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned) for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Thank you. -- S.C.

ANSWER: Of course, the answer depends on the specific type of food, but a good rule of thumb is three to four days for cooked food. I found more exact recommendations at www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/storagetimes.html

Common causes of poor vision Vision loss is a common condition, as the World Health

Organization notes that more than 285 million people across the globe suffer some type of visual impairment. Many people can effectively counter their vision problems with prescription lenses, but others may have a more significant issue, such as low vision.

The Kellogg Eye Center defines low vision as a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. Those with low vision have some useful sight and are not considered completely blind. However, low vision can interfere with performance of daily activities, and some people with this condition are classified as “legally blind.”

Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance or problems with differentiating colors. Yet, not everyone dealing with these symptoms has low vision. Specialized testing can determine if a person has low vision or another condition.

Many conditions can impact sight and contribute to vision loss. Here’s a look at some of the more common ones.

• Glaucoma: A person with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral vision. Early symptoms, such as a subtle loss of contrast, may be unnoticeable. Eventually, glaucoma may cause tunnel vision, which occurs when a person can only see through a small window.

• Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The AMDF offers that macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the retina’s central portion, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it

contributes to one’s ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and see objects in fine detail.

• Retinal detachment: An increase of floaters or sudden flashes of light in vision may be indicative of retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. When caught promptly, a detached retina may be repaired. However, if left untreated and the detachment reaches the macula in the center of the retina, vision loss may be irreparable. The National Eye Institute says those with extreme nearsightedness, those who have had cataract surgery or those with a family history of retinal detachment are at a high risk.

• Diabetic retinopathy: Blurring or patchy vision loss can be a side effect of high blood glucose levels. Not all people with diabetes will develop vision problems, but it is common enough to warrant attention.

• Cataracts: According to The Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up the eyes’ lenses. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read or drive. Over time, cataracts may obscure vision so much that they require surgical repair.

Routine eye examinations can bring potential vision disturbances to light and facilitate faster treatment. Eye doctors also can make suggestions about lifestyle changes, including the use of optical devices to improve sight.

Save on Gas

Fill up with a lower-octane gasoline. Buy the lowest grade or octane of gasoline that is appropriate for your car. Unless your car requires premium gasoline, filling up your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money. That pricey premium fuel won’t boost your car’s fuel economy or performance in the least, so skip it. If you’re not sure what grade of fuel works best for your car, open up your owner’s manual and take a look. As long as your engine doesn’t knock or ping when you fuel up with regular unleaded, you’re good to drive on this much cheaper gas. Passing on pricey premium gasoline could save you hundreds of dollars a year.

The Caledonia Library

Board would like to thank

the community for their

response to our recent

donation letter. Your

generous support will help

support our local library.

Thank you also for making

our holiday wreath sale an

immense success!

To everyone in the Lima/

Honeoye Falls area, who

so generously supported the

Lima Food Pantry. We were

overwhelmed by the giving

of so many at this Christmas

season. Thank you on behalf

of the many households that

were able to use all the

many donated items.

“The Volunteers”

To the students and

parents of Attica bus 111.

THANK YOU! For all the

Christmas gifts. P.S. the

homemade chocolate

covered pretzels were

awesome!

Mr. Jeff

Thank you to the man

ahead of me at the

checkout in Harbor

Freight last week. After

making your purchase, you

turned and handed me your

gift card with money

remaining on it, smiled, and

walked out. I was there

buying two small flashlights

as gifts for a couple of

friends who live on

disability. Your gift paid for

one of them. But more than

that, being blessed by a

stranger’s unexpected gift

made me joyful for days

afterwards! I don’t know if

you realized you also

handed me your receipt,

containing “customer

name”. I tried to find you on

the Internet, in case you

wanted your receipt, but

found nobody local by that

name. You made my day.

Thank you!

Thank you with all of my

heart to “SOMEONE WHO

CARES” for the generous

Christmas gift. I wish this

anonymous gift had a name

but you wish this to be your

secret. Your special kindness

will never be forgotten.

Thank you, Pat

Twice now, driving on

public roads , cars are

stopped by parents standing

in the road begging for

money for their kids’

cheerleading groups. Big

threatening amazon type

women stand in the middle

of the road and push money

containers into drivers’

faces, while mean spirited

hulk type men stop cars on

the other side of the road.

Come on parents, pay for

your own kids’activities

instead of harassing

motorists for money. The

town should not allow this

begging on public roads. If

cheerleaders need money,

let them work for it.

Motorists should not be

forced into giving money by

threatening parents shoving

money containers in their

faces.

Being a school bus driver I

see this a lot and it needs

to stop. Drivers--stop

making new rules for the

road. Do not stop in the

road and flag a bus to

proceed if they are turning

left when you are going

straight. YOU have the right

of way--use it. You may think

you are being helpful but

you are not. You are creating

a dangerous situation for

everyone on the road. There

are rules for a reason-so

everyone knows what the

other driver is doing. When

you do this no one knows

what’s going on. Why are

you making your own

driving rules? I will (and

have) sat for as long as it

takes for you to do what you

are supposed to be doing.

Unless you have the

authority to wave me on,

then stop doing it.

To the long-haired,

bearded, dirty fellow

cheering on the team,

GROW UP!! Let the coaches

coach!! You not only look

like an idiot, you are acting

like an idiot. Really, who are

you trying to impress? Also,

brush your teeth and

shower. You are not fooling

anyone when you smell like

a special chimney!!

Lead with Experience… Volunteer to be a Peer Leader!

Volunteer… We Need People Like You!

To become a facilitator, you just need good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and a willingness to lead small group workshops.

Peer leaders team up to teach the six week program in weekly 2 1 ⁄ 2 hour sessions. Workshops are held each spring and fall throughout Livingston County.

You’ll teach important self-management skills and help other older adults learn to take charge of chronic conditions like arthritis, high blood pressure and chronic pain.

Consider Leading A Living Healthy Workshop.

Do you or someone you know have a long-term health condition? Would you like to meet new people, develop leadership and other valuable skills?

Volunteering with us you’ll have the opportunity to share what you’ve learned about self-care with others!

We’re looking for open-minded, friendly individuals who are comfortable speaking in front of small groups and enjoy helping people.

Volunteer peer leaders have been found to gain the same health benefits as Living Healthy workshop participants!

Receive free training and ongoing support from our project coordinator. Workshop materials and content for this six week workshop are provided for you and are easy to use!

For more information: [email protected] • 585.335.4358

“Being a peer leader means so much to me. Having a chronic condition myself, I’ve learned so much from the participants and other leaders.”

“I’ve facilitated four workshops now, and with each additional workshop I feel more strongly

about the good they bring to

others.”

Barb Van Volkenberg is my Everyday Angel.

I have witnessed and been in awe of the wonderful care she and her husband have given her mentally handicapped brother for 30+ years. Barb was there for a good friend she lost to cancer and is now being very supportive of a friend with Alzheimer’s, whom she calls, visits and takes out often. She is also there for another friend with Parkinson’s.

I hope I never have to deal with a major illness, but if I do, I’ll be lucky to have Barb as one of my friends. I also have other friends who are there for their families and friends in need. I’m sure others do, too. Many thanks to all of these Everyday Angels!

Making Your Resolutions Work By Joseph Langen

New Year’s resolutions often fail because toxic emotions and experiences from our past can sabotage us or keep us stuck with the same old thoughts, patterns and regrets. ~ Debbie Ford

Do you remember any of your New Year’s resolutions from last year? If so, how well did you do with them? Most of us who make resolutions are serious about keeping them, but somehow our resolve comes undone soon after the year gets underway.

Making a resolution is a step toward some real changes. We usually start with an idea or perhaps a suggestion. We may move to a resolution. The final step is action. The road between intent and accomplishment seems long and dark, often littered with resolutions which don’t quite make it for one reason or another.

Our bodies would be in better shape if we ate more sensibly or exercised more. We would feel more accomplished if we learned skills we promised ourselves we would practice. Feeling more prosperous would follow being more careful with our money.

What happened to all these fine resolutions you made? Perhaps you acted impulsively, not considering whether you had the ability to follow through with them. Were they all that important to you in the first place?

Rather than latching onto the first resolution which comes to mind, you could stop to think before resolving. What have you learned about yourself over the last year? Did you discover or develop any new skills? Did you become more aware of your strengths or weaknesses in following through with changes? Did you learn there were things you couldn’t do? With these thoughts in mind, it should be easier to decide on a resolution which moves you along the road toward your life goals and uses strengths and skills you know you have.

Once you have decided on a resolution, the next step is to keep it in mind as the year progresses. One possibility would be to write a few key words on our calendars on the first of each month, reminding you to stop and think about how you did with your resolution over the past month. It is also a chance to think about how you can refine your resolution over the next month. If a month is too long, try doing it once a week.

You might discover as you go along that you bit off more than you could chew and your resolution is somewhat too ambitious. Maybe you can work on part of the resolution this year and save the rest for next year. Maybe you will discover you don’t quite have the skills to carry off your resolution. A mini-goal could be to learn the necessary skills from someone more proficient than you are and then return to your resolution.

Keeping track of your resolutions, progress and accomplishments will help you stay more focused on your long term goals, using your skills and strengths. You will become more aware of what you have to offer and learn to better appreciate yourself. Maybe next December you will be able to look back over the past year and see you have become a little more of the person you would like to be.

Life Lab Lessons

• Can you think of one resolution you made in past years?

• How well did you do with it? • What would you most like to have

different about yourself in the next few months?

• Try that for a resolution. • Then track your progress putting it

into practice.

EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE

Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.

Thinking about dental implants?

To better serve our patients, we are now accepting Delta Dental, Guardian, Met Life and Blue Cross and Blue Shield dental plans.

THE GRAVEYARD CYPRESS If there is a tree that has come to symbolize death and

mourning more than any other, it is the Italian Cypress. Known as the “mournful tree” by both the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Mediterranean Cypress ( Cupressus sempervirens ) remains the most commonly planted tree in European and Muslim cemeteries. Some of this tree’s popularity may be attributed to its longevity. Cypress trees are known to have survived for 2,000 years and longer. In addition, the cypress tree’s tall, slender bearing makes it seem to point heavenward as it stands guard over the departed buried below. As one of the most classical mourning symbols in both Western and Eastern cultures, cypress branches are considered to be very suitable for mourning wreaths.

Should you choose to use items that are symbolic to the deceased, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to honor your requests. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. Contact us at (585) 346-5401 whenever you need us. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY .

We might at first assume that Voltaire was teasing when he suggests that one who answers every question was ignorant. Surely such a person must be extremely intelligent, perhaps the most intelligent person who ever lived!

That is precisely Voltaire’s point. No one could possibly be so intelligent as to have the answer to every question. Only chose so ignorant that they fail to understand their own limitations would try to answer every question that anyone might ask.

Our understanding and compassion is the basis for the advice that we provide to families who must make decisions under stress. We do not take this responsibility lightly.

“A man must be very ignorant if he answers every question he is asked…”
