Hearty stew s and belly-w arming soups are coming out of the kitchens; frost is sparkling, and w inter jackets are coming out of hiding. Families are craving slow -cooked, savory meals that yield health benefits and leftovers. Delic ious, savory w inter-rec ipe ingredients that w ill surely satisfy are w hite beans and Oso Sw eet Onions, an onion grow n at the foot of the Andes M ountains. Onions are not only believed to be a cancer preventative, their low -salt, low -fat health benefits are the proactive equivalent to superhero pow ers. Onions have 25 compounds that low er blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent thrombosis, inhibit strokes and battle heart disease, says the American Heart Association.
Plus, the antioxidants and flavonoids found in onions don’t lose their potency once cooked. This makes them ideal for slow -cooked rec ipes. They add a punch of flavor and a w hopping serving size, making them an affordable luxury during the chilly w inter months.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 27, 1827, a group of masked and costumed
students dance through the streets of New Orleans, marking
the beginning of the city’s Mardi Gras celebrations. Though
early French settlers had brought the tradition of Mardi Gras,
Spanish governors later banned the celebrations.
A gold watch is the most appropriate gift for retirement, as its recipients have given up so many of their golden hours in a lifetime of service.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Common Shaving Myth Debunked DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 48-year-old, athletically fit man with excessive body hair on my back, chest and arms. I see that the younger generation of men at the gyms, pools and beaches seem to all groom (shave) their body hair for better appearance. I started trimming down but have not fully shaved. My concern is whether, when you cut hair, it grows faster. When I’m in my upper 60s or 70s and decide to stop, will my body hair grow to 4 inches long? Does your body hair continue to grow at a normal rate when you’re older, or does it slow down? Please advise. -- M.C.
ANSWER: No, it’s a myth that cutting or shaving hair makes it grow faster. It certainly might seem to come in more coarsely, since the cut hair under the surface of the skin is thick. But there is no effect on hair growth. Hair growth rates stay roughly the same throughout adulthood.
I am aware that the current trend is for hairless-appearing skin. However, I see a lot of people with infections from shaving. If you do shave, use plenty of mild shaving cream or gel, always use a new, sharp razor, and use a soothing aftershave cream or lotion to help close the pores after shaving.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male in good health. I take a 40-mg simvastatin and a 150-mcg levothyroxine. I exercise three times a week -- one hour with weights and one hour of aerobics (elliptical and treadmill). On the treadmill, I go from a speed of 3.5 for 25 seconds to 6.0 for 25 seconds. My heart rate goes from 89 to 170 (sometimes 165 to 178) but drops back to about 89 when I return to the slower speed. I have heard that your exercise heart rate should be 212 minus your age times 80 percent. That would be 101. Does my 170 for 25 seconds sound OK? -- E.N.W.
ANSWER: No, that sounds too fast for an 86-year-old. The formula you mention is one frequently stated, and it isn’t particularly accurate, since there is a great deal of individual variation. But 170 is very fast for an 86-year-old. I wonder if it’s accurate. A pulse monitor, using electrical impulses, is the most accurate, but even these can be fooled by electrical interference. If it really is so fast, I would worry about an exercise-induced tachycardia, and a visit to your doctor or cardiologist would be a good idea, especially if you are having symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Do peanuts (which are not nuts, but legumes) afford the same health benefits as nuts? -- A.
ANSWER: Most of the studies showing benefits of nuts included peanuts as well. Peanuts probably have the same benefits as tree nuts.
Unfortunately, many people are allergic to nuts, and many to peanuts. Those people can’t get the benefits of eating nuts, as it is unsafe, even life-threatening on occasion.

Ways to stretch your money further
Living on fixed income after retirement requires that many retirees make some financial concessions. Retirement income likely won’t equal the income professionals earned while they were still working, so men and women approaching retirement may want to begin prioritizing their purchases and choosing which luxuries they can and cannot live without going forward.
Managing on a fixed income may necessitate some changes, but a little frugality and financial wherewithal can ensure seniors need not compromise too much during their golden years.
• Change your dining habits. Many people enjoy meals out on the town after getting home from work and spending time with the family. Retirees have more flexible schedules, and adjusting the time of day when they dine out can add up to considerable savings. Many brunch and lunch offerings are less expensive than dinner menus, and seniors can use this to their advantage. Meet up for lunch and spend less. If you prefer take-out, order from the lunch specials and then reheat your food at dinnertime.
• Ask about senior discounts. Various restaurants, stores and other retailers offer senior discounts. Inquire about discounts before making purchases and take advantage of any offers.
• Pool your resources. Bulk shopping clubs enable individuals to save money on the cost of many goods and services. However, for seniors living in two-person
households, it may seem counterintuitive to purchase items in bulk. Split the cost of shopping club memberships with fellow retirees. This allows you to get discounted prices without having to store excessive amounts of food.
• Shop around. Instead of shopping only at stores you’re familiar with, go where the deals are. Many people are surprised to learn that drug stores often charge less than supermarkets for personal grooming products and household supplies. Shopping online also may yield some good deals. Before making any online purchases, familiarize yourself with shipping costs, which may negate the savings.
• Sign up for rewards programs. Rewards programs may lead to a few extra promotional emails throughout the week, but the savings reaped can be considerable and well worth the nuisance of seeing your spam folder fill up each day. Many savings clubs have replaced traditional coupons, saving seniors the effort required to scan circulars looking for deals.
Living on a fixed income requires seniors to monitor their spending more carefully than they likely had to while they
were still working full time.

Drive with care everyday
Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.
Prior sales excluded. Most vehicles, cannot be combined.

Notification Of Required Health Certificate And Medical Examinations
New York State Education Law, Section 903, specifies the requirement for health certificates and the rights and responsibilities of local school
authorities regarding medical examinations. The following excerpt from the law is provided for your information:
SECTION 903 - PUPILS TO FURNISH HEALTH CERTIFICATES
“A health certificate shall be furnished by each pupil in the public schools upon his/her entrance in such schools, and by each child entering the second, fourth, seventh and tenth grade thereof. An examination of any child may be required by the local school authorities at any time in their discretion to promote the educational interest of such child. Each certificate shall be signed by a duly licensed physician who is authorized to practice medicine in this state, and shall describe the condition of the pupil when the examination was made, which shall not be more than ninety (90) days prior to the presentation of such certificate, and state whether such pupil is in a fit condition of bodily health to permit his or her attendance at the public schools...”
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, Inc. states that a student who may engage in interschool competition must receive a health examination for grades 7 - 12.
The Honeoye Central School District meets the requirements of these laws by conducting physical examinations of all new entrants and students in grades 2, 4, 7 and 10 who have not submitted required health certificates. Sports physicals will also be given. These examinations are conducted by the school physician and are free-of-charge. Parents of new entrants or students in grades 2, 4, 7 or 10 are asked to give special attention to this notice.
Physicals will be conducted on Friday, February 26 and Friday, March 4, 2016.
The trouble with unemployment is that the minute you wake up in the morning you’re on the job.

Sprout A Seed Farm
Loosely place potting soil in a glass container. Push just about any kind of seed into the soil, up against the side of the glass so it is still visible. Keep the soil wet, but not soggy and watch them sprout. See how many different kinds of seed you can grow. You can use dried beans, peas or even popping corn from your own kitchen.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A w orking smoke ala rm
doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. E nergizer and the International Association of Fire
Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families.
The peak time for home fire fatalities is betw een 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., w hen most families are asleep.
Bedrooms Do not trap electrical cords against w alls. Heat can build up, posing a fire hazard. Use only lab-a pproved electric blankets and w armers. M ake
sure cords are not w orn or coming apart. Do not leave electric blankets sw itched on all night unless they are marked “ suitable for all night use.” Keep
bedding, curtains and other combustible items at least three feet aw ay from space heaters. Never smo ke in bed. Replace mattresses made before the
2007 Federal M attress Flammability Standard. By law, mattresses made since then are required to be s afer. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and
outside each sleeping area.
Selling Your Home?
· Look to paint. One of the
least expensive improvement
materials, but one that has a
significant impact, is paint.
Neutral, modern colors can
easily liven up any space. If
you paint with low-VOC paint,
you also can advertise an eco-
friendly home, which is very
desireable these days.
· Add illumination to rooms. A
dark home is a dreary home.
Adding light can mean
including more overhead and
accent lighting. Under-cabinet
task lighting is a nice touch.
Inclusion of skylights and
sun tubes can bring natural
light into rooms that may not
have south- or west-facing
windows.

Dog-Proof Hardwood Floors Pet parents may resign themselves to the fact that hardwood floors aren’t practical. But that doesn’t have to be the case. It’s possible to have and maintain hardwood floors and still enable pooches to enjoy rooms with wood floors.
* Keep dogs’ nails trimmed short so that they do not scratch or scuff wood floors.
* Dogs that tend to grow long fur between the pads of their feet may need to have that fur trimmed as short as possible. This will help improve the traction the dog will have when walking on the wood floors.
* If dog bowls are kept on the floor, use a mat that will protect against spills, drips and slobber. Something that will not allow moisture to bleed through onto the floor is ideal, as is a mat that will contain spills.
* Place runners in high-traffic areas so that the dogs have an easier time of walking from
room to room.
* Clean the bottom of paws when the dog comes inside from the yard so that dirt won’t mar or ruin the floors.
* Choose distressed-looking floors, so if scratches resulting from dogs’ nails do occur, it will blend in with the flooring and not stick out like a sore thumb.
* Ask to have a thick layer of clear-coating applied to the floors to further protect them.
* Do not encourage doggie horseplay on the wood floors, even if it is humorous watching the pooch slide around and try to get footing.
* Consider a floor wax product to improve a dogs’ traction on the floors and reduce their propensity to claw-in to get a good grip. PE113440

We are sincerely thankful for all who provided their time, talents, and treasures remembering Blair and honoring Linda Moran & The Avon Inn staff. While we may unintentionally neglect to mention a few, we appreciate each and every person who attended and contributed in any way. It was such a great night! Many enjoyed live music, wearing custom t-shirts, the silent auction, raffles, and the moving story of recent heart transplant recipient and local weather celebrity Scott Hetsko.

This year, Girl Scouts are celebrating their Gold Award Centennial - 100 years of creating change and acting as leaders in their community. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable changes in their communities and around the world. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. Projects should fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be on- going or sustainable. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure she knows what steps she must tackle while working on her project. She then submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, she begins to work through the steps of her plan, utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause the Scout is addressing. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities.
Geneseo Girl Scout earns Gold Award
Girl Scouts of WNY is proud to announce Geneseo-area Girl Scout Megan Mikolajczyk as a 2016 Gold Award recipient. Megan’s project, Little Free Library , focused on creating a community tool to promote literacy by providing free 24/7 access to books. With sponsorship from the Geneseo Rotary and Literacy Club, she was able to construct a library that allows people to borrow books with no due date or risk of late fees, while also leaving books for others to read. The project is located in Highland Park in Geneseo, NY. Megan wanted to have a lasting effect on the community by creating a readily available source for books and teaching others to share something they no longer need. She has put a plan in place for future Girl Scouts to help keep her Gold Award project going by maintaining the library while she is away at college. To learn more, visit gswny.org or girlscouts.org.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

THE GRAVESIDE SERVICE A graveside service is an option that provides many of the features of a traditional funeral, but simplifies the ceremony. A public or private graveside service may involve an interment (committing the casket to the grave) or an inurnment (placing cremated remains in a columbarium, burial plot, or garden niche). Whether the service is formal or informal, a spirit of dignity must prevail. There is no more solemn occasion in life than the one in which a body is committed to the earth for eternity. Generally, the service is kept short, and one eulogy is delivered in lieu of many. This pared down service focuses the attention of those in attendance on the elemental truth of the circumstance. The details of graveside services are individually determined. When making decisions about a commemoration service, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME assures that your requests will be honored. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. Reach us at (585) 346-5401 and visit our tastefully appointed facilities located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Lots of us have an affinity for the soil. Whether or not we have a “green thumb,” we enjoy working with growing things. We plant flowers that we expect to later delight us with their lovely, fragrant blossoms. We may plant a vegetable garden and hope to enjoy some truly fresh (and quite inexpensive) vegetables for our table.
The one who plants trees is thinking less of his own enjoyment than of his children or others who will benefit from the shade or the fruit from the trees for many years. Remembering those who planted the trees we enjoy today, let’s plant trees now for tomorrow.
Whatever a family chooses to pay for a funeral, we always render the finest, most considerate service possible.
“He that plants trees loves others besides himself…”

EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE
Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.
Thinking about dental implants?
To better serve our patients, we are now accepting Delta Dental, Guardian, Met Life and Blue Cross and Blue Shield dental plans.

My sis and I were doing laundry @ Caledonia Laundromat. An older man came in also; he had to use a micro to talk. We conversed with him and said bye upon leaving. We went to a local restaurant and he came in and ordered his food to go. The waitress came and took our bill. He left. We asked her about our bill, she told us he paid our bill. This has never happened to us before. We wish to say Thank you and God bless. KW & DS
The Lima VFW, Post 26, wishes to thank the wonderful people who gave to our annual drive for patients and residents of the Canandaigua VA Hospital and Zion House.

In early December, I called a local company for service. My kitchen sink drains appeared clogged and overflowing. Service was prompt and courteous within a few hours. The sewer drain was cleaned and a venting air valve was installed. I paid the bill on site. Later, I wrote the company for a specific breakdown of this outrageous charge. To date, weeks later, no reply! Be careful who you hire. Disgruntled Widow
It’s pretty sad when someone hits your dog and doesn’t even stop to see if the dog is dead or not, or even try to find the owner! On Thursday night at about 8:30 to 9pm my daughter’s dog got out. After many hours of looking we found him dead where someone
hit him and just took off! The dog had tags on him where he was from. You would think they would try to find the owner but NO! People nowadays just don’t care! They say karma is bad, but and I hope karma finds whoever did this! Maybe someday you might lose a pet to a hit and run driver!
To the couple who ended up with my groceries: What were you thinking as you put my groceries into your fridge? (Stealing) At least you could have notified the friendly market of the mistake.
I am very concerned about the ambulance corps in my town. There is evidence that the drivers regularly use the ambulance to transport themselves to pick up lunches and other food runs. It seems that the ambulances should not be used for this purpose. The volunteers should use their own transportation to do food runs. The ambulance is there for medical purposes and not for personal use. I don’t see the fire department loading 6 foot Hoagies onto their official vehicles and neither should the ambulance.
School. The community was treated to the Lions’ “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a kid’s carnival, caricature drawings, chair massages, juggling, and magic tricks with The Magic Guy! Thanks go out to all who helped one way or another. The turnout by the Riga community is to be complimented as the Lions sold out all their BBQs and there was a constant flow of the crowd throughout the day. All involved look forward to WinterFest 2017 and hopefully snow for outdoor activities! David Thomas Recreation Supervisor
On Tuesday, February 2nd, I was shopping at the Wal-Mart in Canandaigua. While checking out I realized that I had overspent. I’m so thankful for the shopper behind me. She contributed the extra money to cover the difference so I could make my complete purchase. Thank you so much! Grateful Shopper
I want to thank the two guys who came out of The Nines on a cold snowy night to help tie up my front bumper after I hit a deer on 20A. It was so nice of them to leave the warmth of the restaurant and help get me on my way. THANK YOU!!!

Increase Your Productivity Avoid surfing the Internet. The Internet could be the single greatest contributor to the loss of wor ker productivity in history. While Internet access can help workers maintain some level of sanity during the work week, spending too much time surfing the Internet doesn’t do anyone any good (aside from Web advertisers, of course). If you must surf the Internet each day, do so at established intervals, such as lunch hour or the end of the day. Those who eat breakfast at the office could use the time while they eat to peruse some favorite Web sites, but keep such surfing to a minimum.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Make A Reservation
Nothing is worse than taking a client to dinner and having to wait to get a table. Once the invitati on is extended, make a reservation. Even if the client cannot make it, it’s possible to cancel the reservation. When choosing a restaurant, look for one wi th an established reputation, and preferably one you have patronized in the past. Avoid restaurants with loud music or ones that are considered trendy, a s such locales are often louder and less conducive to conversation.
Another thing to discuss when making the reservation are the seating arrangements. If the restaurant is known for its views, reserve a table with a great view and make sure the clients get the best seats at the table. Clients should not be looking at the wall or sitting in a busy location, such as outside the kitchen or near the bar or restroom.
