Puzzled?
This is the theme of our fall stewardship campaign, beginning on Sun-day, October 10. For four weeks take time to think about why and how you are part of a church. Every single piece or part is important. We are incomplete without you.
Yes, this is a financial campaign. You will receive a pledge card in the mailing that kicks off Be a Part of It. Pledged giving allows us to plan a budget for the next year, to make decisions about programs, and build-ing, and salaries. It frees up our energies for faith instead of funding.
In a church finances are not just a practical issue, but a spiritual issue. Giving is part of acting on our beliefs, making a commitment instead of just talking about something. Being able to let go of our possessions frees us and gives a great joy of spirit. Jesus preached extravagant gen-erosity and the church lived it. We believe that is still the way to live as Christians.
Be a Part of It is more than a financial campaign. We also recognize that you are part of the church in many ways. We are the church we are be-cause of those who give, volunteer, pray, worship regularly, teach, take care of children, bake, paint, learn, meet, play ball, knit, serve meals, ride bikes, and more.
How are you a part of the church?
Why are you are a part of the church?
During the Be a Part of It campaign we will ponder these questions, and ask you to choose to be a part of the mission and ministry of the Brecksville United Methodist Church.

In the fall, are you a person who tends to hunker or to hunger?
Do you see fall as a time to “hunker down” and get ready for the dark and cold of winter? Are you in denial that summer is over—still leaving those san-dals and shorts around to wear? To “hunker”, according to the dictionary, can mean to crouch or sit on one’s haunches, to seek refuge, or to hold fast to a position. Does fall make you want to hold on or hide out?
Or is fall a season that stirs a hunger in you—a hunger to start something new, to learn, to simplify. Does the cooler air stir you to action? Are you en-ergized like all the children and youth returning to school?
I always look forward to fall, and for me it is definitely a time of hunger. Summer makes me feel lethargic, but in the fall it is a joy to walk, to work, to wake up each day. I loved seeing returning faces in church and Sunday School in the past couple of weeks, and hearing the thunder of feet on the stairs again on Wednesdays after school. I am stimulated by planning classes and programs. I am thrilled to know that Alpha is well underway, and am already looking forward to the exciting things of fall and winter: World Com-munion Sunday, the Be a Part of It stewardship campaign, All Saints Sunday, a sacraments class for our fifth graders, Advent, and the wrap up of Project 2010. Woo hoo!
We use a lot of language about God being our refuge. And sometimes it is appropriate to hang on, hold out, and hunker down. But not now! Feel the hunger, and the energy, and the call of our life in Jesus. It is a wonderful time to be alive in Christ.

The CMAP kids will be learning how to write ques-tions and conduct interviews this year! We want to involve as many members of our congregation in this project, and that means YOU!! Interviews will begin in October and take place late in the after-noon on Wednesdays. We know you have many stories to share about your holiday traditions, church memories and family customs; and we want to learn from you! Please call Jenny if you would be willing to sit down with our young historians and share your memories.
The annual community CROP Walk will step off from Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church on Sunday afternoon, October 3, at 2:00. Plan to get there earlier for registration. CROP raises funds for hunger programs both locally and nationally. You may arrange for pledges if you plan on walking, make a donation or simply walk in support. The route is about 5 miles through the park, although there is also a shorter option which stays in town. Please contact Rev. Oehl if you need more information.
Please continue to collect your UN-USUAL stamps (any non-USA stamp or a USA special issue that is not the regular postage rate). Put the stamps in the stamp-covered box in the par-lor. This effort helps the National and International CWU fund grants for women in underdeveloped countries.

Jay Krasnow studied piano with David Deveau, Marianne Williams To-bias, Paul Schoenfield, and Glenn Jacobson; composition with Robert and Victoria Sirota at the Tanglewood Institute; and tonal theory with Peter Westergaard at Princeton University. At the age of sixteen, he performed from memory a recital of George Crumb’s Makrokosmos, Volumes I and II for amplified piano. In 2006 and 2008, Mr. Krasnow performed a series of recitals of rare piano works from the 1860s to the 1880s by Ferenc Liszt and his Hun-garian colleagues. As part of the series, he gave the (possibly U.S. pre-mière) performance of two complete cycles of ‘Studies for the Left Hand Alone’ by Count Géza Zichy (a colleague of Liszt). His current series of recitals focuses on late-period keyboard works from the 1750s through the 1780s by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, two of the more notable sons of Johann Sebastian Bach. Mr. Krasnow is also a composer and plays a number of instruments in addition to the keyboard. A native of Saint Paul, Minnesota, he has resided since 2004 in Cleve-land, Ohio. By day he works as senior analyst at an industrial research firm.
The Music Department of Brecksville United Methodist Church is pleased to welcome pianist and organist Jay Krasnow to kick off our 2010 – 2011 Concert Series.
Saturday, October 2 7:30 pm Sonatas, Fantasias, and ‘Clock Pieces’ by C. P. E. Bach Concert is free and open to the public.
The Thursday, October 7 UMW meeting will be a hands on craft pro-ject. Each December our UMW group donates Christmas gift bags for twenty-five Headstart students. Eve-ryone is welcome to help. The meet-ing will begin at 9:30 am with a conti-nental breakfast and fellowship.

Celebrating unity and uniqueness are always part of World Commun-ion Sunday, this year falling on Oc-tober 3.
We will recognize our unity with other Christians through our wor-ship and communion together. We will also recognize the uniqueness of the many cultures, languages, peoples, and worship styles of Christians around the world.
Come see how we celebrate both uniqueness and unity with music, procession, decoration, prayers, and liturgy. We promise that it will be a unique opportunity to be united in Spirit with our Christian brothers and sisters.
Bible Study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians: Read these two short New Testament books and enjoy lively discussion. The first letter of Paul to the Thessalonians was written to a struggling, yet vigorous church that was only a few months old, made up of Christians who had just come to Christ under Paul's ministry. This is a delightfully revealing letter that shows Paul’s love for these new Christians, and also shows the struggles that were present in the early church. Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians is sent to encourage the Christians of Thessalonica as they were go-ing through more times of trouble and was written to comfort them in their distress over their loved ones who had died and to correct certain misunderstandings they had about the "Day of the Lord’s return".
Book and Video Study of Adam Hamilton’s Making Love Last a Lifetime: In this thoughtful and inspiring book, Adam Hamilton offers some keys to helping you develop a healthy, satisfying and successful marriage. He draws on insights from conversations he has had with over two thousand single and married persons – from in-terviews, counseling sessions and from his own experience in marriage. He also draws on lessons from the Bible to help you make love last a lifetime. Enjoy watching the video, reading the book and joining in the discussion.
Understanding John Wesley’s A Plain Account of Christian Perfection: Christian perfectionism is one of the most distinctive doctrines of the Wesleyan tradition. It is not often spoken of today, yet Wesley preached and taught and fought for it most of his life. This reading and discussion class will give you the opportunity to read A Plain Account of Christian Perfection and become familiar with the doctrine that is at the heart of who we are as Method-ists. The reading each week is short but the questions are thought provoking.
Faith Issues Lectures: The Faith Issues class is a drop-in class that meets in the Sanctuary between the worship services each week. Pastor Karen will lift an issue that relates to the readings and theme for that particular week. We might explore the Bible text more fully, unravel a theological question that arises from the sermon, or get a Methodist perspective on something. Come prepared to ask questions and have some discussion and pastoral teaching.
Classes run October 24 through November 21. Sign up in October!

As Christians we trust in God and are not afraid of the future. As United Methodists, with John Wesley as one of our founders, we are also a prac-tical people. Inside our own church door is a reminder in Wesley’s words to “Do all the good you can.” For Wesley, this included giving.
At a seminar on Wednesday, October 13, at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor, you can gather with your church friends to hear from representatives from the East Ohio United Methodist Foundation. The foundation is an organization which can help churches invest and manage their trusts and endowments. It is also available as an education resource, which is how we are using them.
The morning will include time for information, questions, and sharing food and friendship.
No matter where you are in the process of your life plan, you can come and learn, or share, or simply have a cookie!

Equal
Exchange
Coffee
Our church supports small scale farmers in Latin Amer-ica, Africa, Asia and the United States by using only Equal Exchange coffee at our church functions. Through the project, farmers earn a fair price for their products and have access to affordable credit to finance their farms. Brecksville United Methodist Women are happy to sell coffee to anyone in our con-gregation who desires to help with this project. There are several different types of coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix available. Coffee is $7.50 for a 12 oz bag of ground or whole bean. Co-coa is $6 for a 12 oz. can. Tea is $3.50 for 25 tea bags. These products may be pur-chased on Sunday mornings from Elaine Geringer, Sandy Crist or Mary Kotnik. Dur-ing the week, see Melanie or Cec in the office.
