DEAR CLUB MEMBERS:As we come to the end of the year, it is good to reflect and make note of the enhancements and accomplishments made at the Club at Hammock Beach throughout 2019.

Our recreation team has seen many improvements over this past year including eleven new pool heaters at many of the club pools, the Fantasy Pool Complex had the lower family pool, upper adult pool and hot tub all resurfaced. The Kids Crew activities room was refurbished with new flooring, LED lighting and paint, giving the space a bright and fresh look. The hallway leading to the Kids Crew was also painting. Our Fitness Center welcomed the addition of three new Peloton bikes and state of the art ellipticals and treadmills with a myriad of features. The men’s locker room is getting a new air handler installed.

Around the property, we replaced the cracked concrete walkways near the indoor pool and Fantasy Pool complex, the indoor pool roof was replaced at the same time a new exhaust system was installed and the deck was painted with the pool being deep cleaned. The South Tower pool deck walls were all repaired and painted. Light poles around the Grand Event Lawn and walkway around to the pool and north stairs were all sandblasted and painted. The wood deck on the bridge between the indoor pool and Fantasy Pool complex was replaced and painted. New doors were installed on the indoor pool as well. The Conservatory Clubhouse roof repairs were completed. The Business Center was removed and transformed in to our new Coquina meeting room. The Member’s Lounge by the Lodge Pool was updated with desktops, a printer and fax machine.

All Hammock Beach POAs/HOAs were busy making improvements throughout the year. The HBCCA completed a new roof installation and the Yacht Harbor COA completed a full building exterior renovation. In addition, landscaping and building improvements were a focus in all communities.

We welcomed many new staff members across the resort. Our food and beverage team welcomed Director of Food and Beverage Allen Lancaster, Delfinos’ Manager Dan Kreglo, Atlantic Grille Chef Richardson Pata, Banquets Chef Ernest Levy and Chef Tournant Jarrett Flake. Our engineering team welcomed Wesley Hooks as Director of Engineering. Our new Head Golf Professional Eric Sargeant came to us from Reunion Resort. We also proudly promoted Cassandra Gabriel to Atlantic Grille’s Restaurant Manager and Bobby Stigler to Director of Recreation.

The Advisory Board of Governors (ABOG) provided valuable suggestions on the implementation of new fitness classes, restaurant menu changes, assistance with the smooth running of major golf tournaments, ideas and assistance with all member social events and feedback on maintenance and club aesthetics. Also, in an effort to help reduce our use of plastic, water stations and pitchers were introduced at member events which replaced water bottles.

The Hammock Beach Resort & Club recently hosted a Community Open House, inviting the local real estate community, Chamber of Commerce, area Convention and Visitors Bureaus and many others to showcase the Club for future business, real estate sales and club memberships. We are very proud of all the progress made this year, which sets us up for an exciting 2020!

Chipping Set-upOne of the most common mistakes around the green happens before the swing is made. The set-up is level 1 fundamentals, but something even the pros continue to work on. Even with a high lofted wedge, the majority of shots around the green are a “bump and run” style. Very important to keep most of your weight on the lead leg and your hands in front of the club head. This will allow you to make solid contact by striking the ball with the club moving downward. Remember- If you want the ball to go up, you have to swing down.

Helpful drill for chipping-“One Leg Drill”Simply drop you trail leg back to force all the pressure on your lead leg. This will allow you to maintain stability while working on balance. From one leg, make a smooth and controlled swing to ensure solid contact while the club is descending.

WHEN TO LOB BY DIRECTOR OF TENNIS, GENE PAUL LASCANO

A lob is usually the first choice of players when their opponent(s) is standing near the net waiting to volley aggressively. Some pros would say that the lob is an underused shot in tennis. However, at the club level, I would say it is over utilized. Here are some of the best situations when using a lob would be a good choice of shot:

On the return of serve when playing doubles

In doubles, the server’s partner normally positions themselves close to the net in the hopes of being able to pick off the return with a finishing volley. With the net player starting that close to the net by default, this is the perfect time to try to hit over them. One thing to always be aware of is the quality of the server’s serve. If the serve is hit in a challenging manner, controlling a lob may not be an easy task.

When you need time to recover

Instead of using a lob to gain an advantage, sometimes a lob is always a good option when you need to get yourself out of trouble. When you find yourself way out of position, always lob. The extra “air” under the ball will give you precious seconds to recover and get yourself back into the point.

To change the pace of the rally

Rhythm is such an important thing in tennis. A nice way to change the tempo of point is to utilize a lob. Not only can it disrupt a player’s timing, but a lob doesn’t usually give an opponent much to work with since lobs aren’t normally hit with a good amount of pace.

Lobbing should be done in moderation. One should not lob just because one can. To be most successful when using a lob, timing is everything!

The Member Halloween Mixer was a huge hit! The weather was beautiful allowing the event to take place on the South Tower Pool Deck. Over 60% of members came dressed in a myriad of Halloween costumes creating a lot of laughs and a good time dancing to the sounds of the Soul Fire Band. The History of Afternoon Tea Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four

o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers

and she began inviting friends to join her.

This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

These are some of the topics that will be discussed at the retreat.

We'll cap off the session with a PiYo workout. PiYo is a total-body fitness system designed to get you in shape from head to toe. It combines the practices of Pilates and yoga to help you build strength and lose weight.

Eat Smaller Portions - If you find yourself accepting numerous invitations to holiday parties adding extra snacks and meals, opt for smaller portions. Maintaining social graces often means eating or drinking at least a small amount. So do just that - have a small serving.

Focus on Friends and Family - Don’t forget to be social at events and gatherings. Focus on hanging out, having fun, and interacting with those around you, rather than eating and drinking. Socialize away from the food and drinks, and you will be less likely to go back for seconds and thirds.

Drink Water - Staying hydrated keeps you feeling full and your body working well. Don’t forget to drink more water if you are enjoying extra coffee, tea, or holiday beverages. Feeling full can help you consume less, and staying hydrated will help you avoid an upset stomach from eating and drinking more than usual.

Don’t want to miss out on enjoying fancy drinks? Make your holiday water fancy. Try sparkling water with fresh herbs, such as rosemary, or citrus fruits, like lemons or oranges, to cut out added sugars. Berries, like blackberries, blueberries, or raspberries, make a wonderful addition to water as well.

Eat and Drink Slowly - The excitement of seeing family and friends can lead us to imbibe quickly, which means losing track of what you are consuming. Take it slow. Remember the rest of the strategies - know what you’d like to eat, know what you do not want to eat, remember that gatherings are also about being social, and take your time with food and beverages. In the same way that drinking water makes you feel fuller, eating slowly will give your brain time to realize that you have eaten enough.

Make Healthy Choices First - With a lot of the “don’t do” strategies for staying healthy, it’s nice to frame things in a positive way. Rather than looking for what not to do, look at what you can say yes to. That might mean having sparkling water before a cocktail or eating from the veggie platter before going for a chip. Make healthy choices before you decide to break some rules or indulge.

Choose YOUR Joys - Throughout the holidays, don’t lose sight of what your version of indulging and enjoying truly is. Perhaps staying healthy and making it through the holidays is easier than you think when you stop to consider what you really do and do not want. Maybe you look forward to eggnog all year long but can easily pass up on a slice of pie or flavored martini. Perhaps what you like more than any of that is simply the fun of getting together and enjoying great company or playing fun games. Remember to choose the things that bring you joy.
